Apple Wins Patent For iOS MagSafe Power System

style="text-align: left;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/6a0120a5580826970c014e8ab2771c970d-800wi.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23148" title="6a0120a5580826970c014e8ab2771c970d-800wi" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/6a0120a5580826970c014e8ab2771c970d-800wi.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="347" />Normally we avoid covering Apple patents because so much of what comes up will never see the light of day — however a newly awarded patent could prove to not only be incredibly useful, but might actually be used. We’ve always wondered why iOS devices don’t have a MagSafe style magnetically attached charger, a feature that we love on the MacBooks, but the prospect of interrupting data syncing is an unpleasant one. But with WiFi syncing just around the corner, iOS is ready for it!

style="text-align: left;">Apple first applied for a patent on iOS MagSafe href="http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/10/apple-considers-magsafe-for-portable-devices-like-the-ipad.html">more than a year ago, and according to Patently Apple href="http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2011/08/apple-wins-key-patents-for-multi-touch-displays-magsafe-for-future-ipad-more.html">it has just been awarded.

style="text-align: left;">Hopefully Apple has banked on this enough that it’s a feature we’ll see ASAP in iOS devices.

Head of iAds leaving Apple to join Highland Capital

Head of iAds leaving Apple to join Highland Capital

Technology blog *All Things D” reports that Andy Miller, VP of Apple’s iAd mobile advertising division, is leaving to join venture capital firm, Highland Capital.

Miller came to Apple as part of the Quattro Wireless acquisition, which Apple purchased after losing out on AdMob to Google. He reported directly to Steve Jobs. iAd, however, has faced a number of issues and hasn’t exactly set the mobile ad world on fire.

No word yet on who will replace him.

TiPb Asks: What do you want in the next generation iPod touch?

TiPb Asks: What do you want in the next generation iPod touch?

We’ve been talking so much about the iPhone 5 lately that it feels as if the iPod touch 5 is flying a little under the radar. Usually the iPod touch gets to headline Apple’s annual fall special event but this year it sounds like the iPhone 5 is going to be stealing that thunder as well. Also, while iPod touch used to have the kids and the “I want iOS but I don’t want an iPhone” market all to itself, it now has to share that with iPad, which isn’t as portable but can be easier to use in some circumstances.

So how about we give the iPod touch 5 some love and ask what you want to see Apple announce for it this year?

An Apple A5 chipset seems a given, and that should be great for gaming with its 9x performance (and AirPlay mirroring in iOS 5, which is fabulous.)

It’s already got a Retina Display but not as good a quality one as the iPhone. Maybe Apple could raise the bar on that? Speaking of which, while iPad Touch 4 got cameras, they were… disappointing to say the least. Could Apple finally get serious about iPod touch optics and give us at least 5 megapixels on the back and a FaceTime HD camera on the front?

128GB as an option is something our readers always ask for. Could Apple finally do it? (And maybe retire the iPod classic at the same time?) And the big question — could they add a 3G radio like the iPad has had since it launch?

What else could they do? What else would you want them to do? 3D? Bigger screen? Glowing Apple logo? It’s your turn to tell us!

id’s Rage Goes Free Thanks To Facebook

FPS legends id Software have dropped the price on their iOS title Rage for both href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/rage/id396956740?mt=8">low-res and href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/rage-hd/id400707675?mt=8">HD versions, making it free thanks to a Facebook promotion. They promised that if their href="http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=198187203570616">Facebook page got 100,000 likes, they’d make the apps free for a week. A few thousand thumbs-ups later, they’re comfortably past the 100k margin, and they’ve cut the price on the apps.

Rather than doing the usual iPhone/iPad app split, the post-apocalyptic FPS has an HD version for iPad and iPhone 4, and a low-res version for older devices that might struggle with the more advanced graphics.

Take notes for school with CourseNotes for iPad

CourseNotes for iPad is a note-taking application geared towards students. You can take notes with text and drawings, share them with classmates, and add assignments to you calendar. The recent update includes rich text editing (bold, italics, underline) and Dropbox support.

It’s apps like these that make me miss being a student. I was a horrible note-taker and I would’ve probably done much better in my general-ed classes if I had CourseNotes to help keep me organized and motivated.

Details and screenshots after the break.

Keeping class notes organized is a daunting task for any student. Put an end to unreadable notes on torn up spiral notebooks, and stop paging through your notes looking desparately for that one thing you remember writing that one time… Let CourseNotes be your guide!

CourseNotes is available on the iPad for $4.99.

Daily Tip: How to clear icon badges with BadgeClear [jailbreak]

BadgeClear jailbreak app

Despise notification icons on your apps but not sure how to quickly get rid of them? Disabling them completely is one thing, but being able to selectively clear them when you’ve reached the point of overload is another. Luckily, there’s a Jailbreak app for that and we’re going to tell you about it, after the break!

BadgeClear is pretty much made for people who despise icon badges. Until iOS 5 drops (and a jailbreak for it), we don’t have the option to disable badges for every single app — Apple doesn’t allow you to clear badges for a lot of default apps like Mail — but if you’re jailbroken, BadgeClear makes it easy to clear any and all app icon badges with just a few taps.

Just hold down any icon until they start jiggling (just like you would to delete an app) and tap on the badge you’d like to clear. BadgeClear will ask you if you want to clear it and just tap yes.

This is nice for annoying apps that have badges for no reason really. I have a couple of those. My banking app always sends me push notifications about 10 days too late and leaves an annoying little badge. This is much easier than digging through the app and viewing the notifications. Any apps you have this may be useful for?
