iPhone Announcement “Just Weeks Away” But iPhone 5 Suffering Delays?

We’ve got two interesting reports for you today, both of which have some good news, but one of which has something a bit less than ideal, too.

Firstly, href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/15/alleged-iphone-5-images-begin-to-surface-online/">the NYT has mentioned in passing:

We’re just weeks away from the announcement of the new Apple iPhone 5, according to an Apple employee who asked not to be named because he was not allowed to speak publicly for the company.

They also believe it’ll have an 8MP camera from Sony, and an A5 dual-core processor. Hardly anything too revolutionary, but that “just weeks away” is nice to think about. Though “weeks away” could mean anything from a fortnight to a couple of months.

In a similar vein, href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/09/15/new-york-times-iphone-announcement-in-weeks-yes-we-have-more">9to5Mac have done some digging, and they’re certain that Apple is set to announce two new iPhones when the time comes: a totally revamped iPhone 5 with tapered edges, thinner body and a larger screen; and an upgraded iPhone 4 — available both pre- and post-paid.

However, there is a major caveat too:

It appears that the tear-drop shaped iPhone 5 with larger screen and thinner, rounder body is seeing continued design and production delays, at least on one assembly line (Apple has multiple production sources – Pegatron, Foxconn, etc). We therefore think that iPhone 5 will be delayed slightly at the very least and may see shortages all the way into 2012.

The iPhone 5 itself is a sight to behold, we’ve been told. It is impossibly light, yet much firmer than Samsung Galaxy phones which are backed in plastic. The camera rivals point and shoot cameras and will be a major marketing point for this device.

I really hope this isn’t true. Remember the problems with the white iPhone 4? If the flagship iPhone 5 is hit by significant delays, you’ll have a lot of pissed off customers. Me included. Even if it’s just a scarcity problem, I really don’t want to have to deal with the drama of tracking one down and hunting for months like I did with the iPad 2.

Apple Working To Let You Combined Multiple Apple IDs

href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/16/apple-working-on-allowing-the-merging-of-multiple-apple-ids/">According to MacRumors, Apple is working on a way of letting users merge multiple Apple IDs onto a single login. This hasn’t been an issue until now, as switching users has been easy through iTunes or iOS, but with the release of iCloud, that’s set to change. Due to the automatic download functionality, Apple has changed things to make it harder to switch between accounts with restricted logins — you can only switch accounts once every 90 days.

Some people have more than one AppleID due to having multiple email addresses they’ve had over years. Others now have two thanks to MobileMe, as their MobileMe and personal IDs are considered separate.

Now they’ve heard that Apple is working on a method of combining multiple Apple IDs into one login. However, until that rolls out, they “recommended picking a single account to plan on keeping indefinitely and to make all future purchases on that account.”

Found Footage: Stevie Wonder Thanks Steve Jobs

So apparently last weekend, Stevie Wonder jumped on stage at an LA nightclub, played some of his songs, chatted with the crowd a bit, and took time to talk about helping those with disabilities. Jump ahead to 4:35 or so in the video above to see the quote, but Wonder mentions Steve Jobs, and how he made the iPhone and iPad particularly usable for the blind. “There is nothing that you can do on the iPhone or iPad that I can’t do,” as Wonder put it.

Two new iPhones to be announced this month, iPhone 5 may be in short supply

According to 9to5Mac, as has been rumored for a while now, there will be two different iPhone models coming in the early part of next month. The first model will be based on the current iPhone 4 and will be the low-end model (budget or what was previously rumored to be iPhone nano). It will still have the glass front and back panels and is said to be rolling off the production line in huge quantities. What is interesting is that this model will supposedly be offered at an extremely aggressive price point with prepaid and post paid service plans.

The iPhone 5 on the other hand will have a larger screen with a thinner rounder body. It is said to be a sight to behold as it is impossibly light but very solid to hold. The camera will even rival point and shoot cameras and will be a major selling feature of the new model.

Now the bad news, rumors abound that Apple has had a few design and production problems with the iPhone 5; which will result in a slight delay and may affect stock levels right into 2012.

Now as with all of these rumors, take them with a giant size pinch of salt. I remember similar stories about delays to the iPad 2 just before it was announced and they turned out to be false. The only thing I would take from the astonishing amount of rumors that are floating around about the iPhone 5 this week is that this is a sure sign that its launch will be sooner rather than later.

iPad 2 marked as discontinued at Target?

iPad 2 marked as discontinued at Target?

iPad 2 have been marked as discontinued at Target according to a source who sent TiPb the above screens. Though these only show the 16GB iPad 2 3G on both Verizon and AT&T as being discontinued, our source maintains none of the current SKUs are long for Target’s shelves.

That implies that we will not be ordering more, which implies a new iPad is forthcoming rather soon (October-ish, say). Either that or Target’s exiting the iPad business, which seems unlikely. A lot of the cases have gone clearance too.

TiPb previously heard that while Apple was considering moving it up to a fall release, iPad 3 had been pushed back again to spring, perhaps because the 2048×1536 Retina Displays couldn’t yet be made cheaply enough at sufficient yield rates.

If that’s accurate, and the discontinued status isn’t a glitch in the system, what this portends for current iPad 2 SKUs, or Target’s iPad business is uncertain.
