Seas0nPass Updated, now jailbreaks Apple TV running iOS 5

Seas0nPass has been updated and it now supports a tethered jailbreak of the latest Apple TV iOS 5 software versions 4.4, 4.41 and 4.42. Unfortunately the jailbreak is a tethered solution which means if you have to reboot your Apple TV it will need to be connected to iTunes before you can use it again. Not that much of a deal for the Apple TV as reboots should be few and far between.

If you have been holding off for a jailbreak before updating your Apple TV, it may be a good time to do it. You are missing out on some great new features like AirPlay Mirroring, Photo Stream, Trailers, National Hockey League and Wall Street Journal Live.

If you do decide to update and jailbreak a word of warning, if you use Plex or Rowmote these plugins are not working with iOS 5. Also XMBC will only work if you use the nightly builds.

Poll: Would you like to have third-party keyboards on iPhone or iPad?

While we know it isn’t going to happen, it is still fun to dream, so the question arises – would you like to have the option to download other keyboard options for iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, like you can for Android? The iPhone keyboard is really good and a lot of people seem to type rather well on it, but wouldn’t it be nice to have the option to change it? To have something like Swype or Swiftkey as an option? Or to get them in pink or yellow, or themed after your favorite band or video game or TV show if you wanted? Wouldn’t it also be nice to have a custom layout, or different spacing?

Are you happy that there’s only one keyboard to rule them all on iOS devices, or do you wish Apple would let you change them up? Vote in the poll up top and let us know why you feel the way you do in the comments!

iPad 3 Retina Display production facing challenges at LG, Samsung?

CNet reports that LG and Samsung may be met with production issues for Apple’s rumored iPad 3 Retina Display.

They have production plans for 2,048×1,536 displays. Starting in November. But those are only plans at this point,” said the source, referring to LG and Samsung. “It’s not a question of making just one. That, of course, can be done. The challenge is making lots of them,” the source said. “This is a quantum leap in pixel density. This hasn’t been done before.”

They refer to interim plans for a 1600×1200 resolution display, but given huge problems that would mean for developers, it seems unlikely.

TiPb previously heard that Apple was flirting with the idea of releasing an iPad 2 Pro or iPad 3 this year, but by August we heard production issues meant they were moving back to a spring 2012 schedule.

Microsoft Office team shares vision of the future

The Microsoft Office team has put out a video showing a vision of the future where edge-to-edge, interactive, multitouch and gesture-based panels are everywhere. We’ve seen things like this before in movies like Minority Report and Iron Man, and even ye old Bill Gates CES Keynotes of yore. Apple would never produce a video like this — they want to surprise us with “magical” technology shipping in weeks and month. That’s why it’s great we have more players in the market than just Apple. You have to make the future, you can’t dream it. But you can help inform and inspire it.

Now all that remains to be seen is whether most of those screens end up having Apple, Microsoft, or Google logos on the back of them…

Texting with Siri While Driving May Still Be Illegal

As much as it seems that voice-activated text messaging would be second to calling as a recommended alternative to texting (besides exclusively placing your attention on the road), in some states that is simply not the case. In fact, some legislature already in-place prevents drivers from even utilizing voice recognition to actively create text messages.

With the addition of the virtual assistant Siri in iPhone 4S, Apple made reading and sending text messages with a user’s voice possible through powerful voice recognition. Texting effectively becomes easier and hands-free, both necessities for proper vehicle usage.

One of the downfalls of using any type of voice-recognition software to write text messages is that it would be illegal to check for sentence-breaking to down-right odd errors or a meaning lost in transcription; in a way being forced to blindly send messages. While not a conversation-breaking negative (unless you are already intoxicated…), legality gets more complicated from there.

While 34 states have banned texting while driving, only Vermont bans in-vehicle “electronic communication” of any kind. Therefore, Siri may net drivers a ticket in Vermont. Many states, including California and Georgia, have enacted similar restrictions for drivers under 18 – that a phone can not be used in any way while behind the wheel.

A study conducted at Virginia Tech University has shown that drivers using hands-free devices have a slower response rate on average than minimally legally-intoxicated drivers. Numerous studies have led to the conclusion that both hands-free and hands-on cell phone usage result in the same increased four-fold risk of crash.

Legal or otherwise, people are going to naturally want to communicate during their many commutes. Little good is done when the safest way to do so is a banned activity. In retrospect, if hands-free messaging is similarly as illegal as the “one hand on the wheel, another on a phone” approach, more recklessness will be caused as a result since there is less incentive to be careful. (Though drivers should always pay close attention to their surroundings while driving, the road is not an ideal place.)

As hands-free messaging gains momentum, legislators will more-than-likely take a second look at current laws based on how responsibly we use voice-recognition software.

iTunes Match data to be reset today, official launch coming tomorrow?

Apple has informed its iOS developers that it intends to reset iTunes Match beta accounts on Thursday October 27. Apple states that this is intended to improve “overall quality and reliability” of the service. Resetting iCloud data is nothing new as it has happened a few times during the iOS 5 and iCloud betas.

iTunes Match was announced as part of iCloud and is Apple’s version of a music locker service. For $24.99 a year, iTunes Match will scan your desktop iTunes library, give you a 256-bit AAC version of every song it finds there that’s included in the 20 million strong iTunes catalog, and let you upload any songs (at the original quality) that aren’t.

It still appears that the service will be US only at launch due to licensing deals. Hopefully Apple is working hard to resolve these issues; then the reality of cutting the cord can be fully realized by everyone. Apple did say at the “Let’s Talk iPhone” event that iTunes Match would be available at the end of this month; so it is expected right around now!
