iOS 5 bug may lead to untethered jailbreak

Chronic Dev Team member @pod2g let the jailbreak community know that he’s discovered a new bug in iOS 5 that may allow for an untethered jailbreak in the future.

Hey jailbreaking friends, I’ve found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don’t expect a release soon, but I’m gonna work hard in it.

Currently, the only way to jailbreak iOS 5 is by tethering your iPhone to your PC or Mac and re-jailbreaking with RedSn0w each time a reboot is needed, which can cause a lot headaches for users on-the-go.

Details are slim, and we still aren’t sure if this will cover the full gamut of iOS devices including the new iPhone 4S. In any case, we’re looking forward to an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 but it appears we’ll have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime you can check out the TiPb Jailbreak guide or head over to our Jailbreak and Unlock forums!

Belkin set to launch a remote camera shutter release for iPhone

Belkin is set to release a remote camera shutter controller for the iPhone according to information found in an FCC filing. The small accessory will work over a Bluetooth connection to your iPhone and it can activate the camera shutter or trigger video recording remotely.

The camera remote is set to work exclusively with Belkin’s LiveAction app which is already available in the App Store. The camera remote will also come with a detachable iPhone stand to enable you to prop up your iPhone at various angles to capture the best shot. It could come in very handy if you like to take group photographs that you also wish to be included in. This would be a much better option than rushing around after setting the camera’s self timer.

There is no information as to when this may be released or any pricing information at this stage. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything more.

Bug Unearthed That Might Pave Way for iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak?

Those awaiting patiently for an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5 received some good news this morning. Chronic Dev Team’s pod2g has unearthed a bug in iOS 5 that he believes makes it possible for an untethered jailbreak. While a release is not coming soon, he is hard at work at making this happen and this sounds like encouraging news.

We had heard previously from the Dev Team’s MuscleNerd that they had a href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/iphone-4s-and-ipad-2-jailbroken-on-ios-5/2011/10/28/">preliminary jailbreak of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S on iOS 5. At that time, there were “huge missing pieces and plenty of work left“.

Perhaps this new find will help advance the public release of an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. Right now, it’s still too early to tell, but we’ll take the good news.

Apple Considering Dual-LED Light Bars for Next Gen iPad

According to href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20111107PD204.html">DigiTimes, Apple is considering two alternative backlight solutions for its next generation iPad. Speculation that Apple will move to a higher resolution display would necessitate implementing a dual-LED backlight as compared to the single backlight used in the current iPad 2. The options range from using two LED bars or simply adding an LED to a single bar.

The sources claim Apple is leaning towards the dual-bar BLU, in part due to the manufacturers solving issues related to heat dissipation and battery consumption.

Apple set to change LED backlight design for next gen iPad with Retina display

Apple is planning to change its backlight design for the next generation iPad, according to technology news source Digitimes. Vendors have told Digitimes that Apple has been offered two alternative backlight solutions.

With the next-generation iPads expected to adopt LCD panels with resolutions higher than 2048 by 1536, the current single LED light bar designed for the iPad 2 has to be modified in order to maintain or strengthen the brightness of the panels, the sources explained.

The two options appear to involve a single-bar option with dual LED chips inside whilst the other option offers dual-LED light bars. It is believed that Apple will adopt the dual-LED light bar option now that issues with heat dissipation and battery consumption have been solved.
