No Spectre of Antennagate?

One of those questions that seem to linger around the launch of the new iPhone 4S is the spectre of ‘Antennagate,’ which pretty much tarnished the first few months of the iPhone 4. Apple managed to mitigate the disaster with a free bumper case program and it was spared further humiliation by the fact that the iPhone 4 outclassed virtually every other smart phone at the time. This time, however, Apple cannot risk a similar scenario because its rivals have already released high-powered devices that actually outclass the iPhone 4S in terms of hardware specs. However, fortunately for Apple this time Antennagate may well and truly be not an issue for the iPhone 4S.

According to engineers who worked with Apple on the new antenna design, the new iPhone 4S will feature two antennas (one at the bottom and the other on the top) to receive and transmit data. This virtually eliminates the chances of something happening like Antennagate, where phone calls would be dropped when a person’s hand gripped the bottom part of the phone (where both antennas were integrated into the back of the phone). The problem was triggered only when someone touched that particular area because the antennas would get short-circuited. The problem was effectively eliminated when the bumper was installed because it prevented the hand from acting as a form conductor. However, despite Apple’s efforts it was a Public Relations disaster because Apple initially denied all knowledge, then tried pretending everything was normal and only finally did it actually acknowledge a problem.

While the “death-grip” that plagued the iPhone 4 may not affect the iPhone 4S, analysts still say that if you hold the phone horizontally with both hands to text or communicate, the signal could be affected. However, this problem is not isolated to the iPhone, it is something that affects virtually every other smart phone on the market and is primarily due to technological limitations and not shoddy designs.

iPhone 4S seals its position as the most wanted smartphone

As news of the iPhone 4S first emerged at the recent Apple Conference, the general mood was quite negative: investors panicked (Apple’s share price fell by 5% initially), critics predicted the end of Apple’s reign and its rivals began silently rejoicing. In a short look back, it seems like Apple will have the last laugh as it announced that pre-orders for the iPhone exceeded the one million mark in a single day. The popularity of the upcoming iPhone was never at question, but after it was unveiled that there would be no iPhone 5, but rather an upgraded version of the iPhone 4S, many were concerned that the popularity of the iPhone might decrease over time. However, the latest figures show, those concerns were severely misplaced.

Now the important thing to remember about this development is that this may not necessarily reflect the views of those who are not hardcore Apple fans. Unlike its rivals, Apple has managed to create a cult-like following amongst tech enthusiasts who embrace everything Apple and this segment of consumers is significant enough to seriously influence and boost Apple’s initial sales. Apple’s amazing marketing and support services, also helps create the kind of Apple ecosystem that none of its competitors have managed to develop. This is probably because Apple has managed to focus on both services and hardware while rivals simply focus on churning out gadgets with better hardware.

The iPhone 4S, relative to the competition, may not find it as easy as previous generations of the iPhone because this time its rivals have released a wide variety of high-end smart phones, and some of which actually outclass the iPhone in terms of hardware. Meanwhile, the ever-improving Android system is beginning to give the iOS platform a run for its money. Now while rivals may be able to outclass Apple in terms of hardware, they are still unable to grasp the importance of marketing and support services, which are essential for successful products (i.e. the iPhone).

Sprint Offers Unlimited Data Plans After all

After initially suggesting that it would not offer unlimited data plans, Sprint proudly announced that it would be the only carrier in the US that that will offer unlimited data plans for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. This will certainly have an impact on its major rivals Verizon and AT&T because neither of which offer unlimited data plans. Combine this with the fact that the iPhone is an immensely data-hungry gadget (as are the latest generation of smart phones) and you have a recipe for the most popular iPhone carrier in the US. Optimistically, this could even result in significant iPhone migrations from rivals’ networks, even though Sprint is not putting a lot of emphasis on the possibility.

As it stands, other iPhone service providers generally reduce speeds or impose additional charges when users exceed a pre-defined data limit. Now this was not generally a problem for the pre-smart phone era, when phones did not actually consume a lot of data but in these times, it has become a huge stumbling block on the growth and adoption of smart phones because so many of them are primarily designed to work seamlessly with online apps. Apple, Android and RIM all use cloud services, and this in turn increases the pressure on data networks. Service providers are generally loathed to allow unlimited data plans because it reduces the overall quality of the other services. Moreover, the only way around the problem is to upgrade the existing infrastructure, which is an extremely expensive option.

As smart phones become smarter and service providers remain stuck with existing infrastructure, consumers are beginning to feel the effects of limited data plans in the form of increased fees. Hence, Sprint’s announcement is surely going to give it an edge over its competitors. Sprint has three major monthly-unlimited data plans: $69.99 (unlimited text messaging + 450 minutes talk time), $89.99 (unlimited text messaging + 900 minutes talk time) and $99.99 (unlimited text messaging + unlimited minutes talk time). However, keep in mind that it does have a $10 per month “premium data add-on” fee for smart phones, which means those prices could all increase by $10.

Instapaper 4.0 Offers Total Redesign

With iOS 5 bringing Reader and Reading List to Safari, we’ve all been keeping our eye on Instapaper to see how they would react to Apple’s remarkably similar service. Today that reaction occurred, with Instapaper 4.0 hitting the app store. This new update completely overhauls the navigation, especially on the iPad version. There’s also in-app Wikipedia lookup, viewable footnotes, multi-select, social browsing, editor’s picks and more.

One of the really interesting new features is pay-to-search. It’s a $1 per month for the subscription, but it allows you to search the full text of all your saved articles on the server side, rather than having to download them locally to do it.

Marco Arment’s blog post does a pretty good job of laying out the changes, but here’s the changelog to give you something of an idea:

- Completely redesigned iPad list interface as a grid with sidebar

- Redesigned iPhone interface with a black-and-white theme

- Multi-select articles in list to archive, delete, or move in bulk

- Search Subscription: the $1/month Subscription from the Instapaper website is now available in the app via In-App Purchase. It’s called Search Subscription, and it adds server-side searching of the *full contents* of every article you’ve ever saved. This replaces the old downloaded-articles-only search in the app.

- Archive and Delete now peacefully coexist everywhere

- App Directory (in Settings) lists apps that integrate with Instapaper

- Hardware brightness control in iOS 5 (brightness now also available on iPhone)

- Draggable scrollbar for quickly jumping through documents

- Article authors, published dates, and site titles are now displayed when available (availability will increase over time)

- “Friends” section can now browse all recent links posted in your Facebook news feed, Twitter timeline, and Tumblr Dashboard

- “Editors” is now fully intergrated and sourced exclusively from Give Me Something To Read

- New settings to customize number of Liked/Archive articles stored on device

- Wikipedia lookups added to newly redesigned “Define” popups

- Footnotes are converted to inline “…” buttons that display in popovers

- [iPhone] Option to hide the status bar while reading (hidden by default)

- [iPhone] Redesigned font (ᴀA) panel to be like iPad’s

- [iPhone] Redesigned Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Pinboard, Evernote share forms

- YouTube URLs now open in the system’s YouTube app

- New option to use Apple’s dictionary under iOS 5

- Minor improvements to the in-article styling

- Smoother tilt scrolling that works well in all orientations

- New icon

- Added Tweetbot and The Hit List to Share panel

- When updating, the entire table no longer reloads after each article downloads. It now just reloads once after the main update request, showing all (even un-downloaded) articles, and they enable themselves as they get downloaded.

Steve Jobs memorial draws family, friends and colleagues to pay tribute

Remembering Steve Jobs

According to The Wall Street Journal, the private memorial held for Steve Jobs yesterday included moving words from family, friends and senior executives from the industry.

Steve Jobs’s widow Laurene Powell Jobs, sister Mona Simpson and three of his children spoke at the memorial service held for the Apple co-founder on Sunday, according to two people who attended [...] Both people who attended described the service as incredibly moving and a fitting tribute to Mr. Jobs, who was known as a tech visionary, demanding boss and a fanatic for design. One person mentioned that many speakers cracked jokes about Mr. Jobs, who died on Oct. 5 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Others who were close to Jobs also spoke during the memorial included Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Apple Senior VP for Industrial Design Jony Ive. Bono from U2 also performed, along with Yo Yo Ma and singer Joan Baez, with Bono reading lyrics from an iPad during the performance.

Apple plans to celebrate the life of Steve Jobs on October 19th on the Infinite Loop campus.
