Apple Acquires 3D Mapping Company C3 Technologies

Since the first iPhone, iOS has utilized Google Maps as the default application for maps. Over the past few years, Apple has purchased Placebase, a mapping development company and 3D mapping firm Poly9. Now comes word via 9to5Mac that Apple has acquired 3D mapping company C3 Technologies. With Apple acquiring three companies involved in mapping, it would certainly appear that Apple most definitely has an interest in creating their own mapping solution, one that would feature 3D technology.

C3 Technology certainly creates some really mind-blowing tech as it relates to mapping.

The Sweden-based company’s automated software and advanced algorithms enable C3 to rapidly assemble extremely precise 3D models, and seamlessly integrate them with traditional 2D maps, satellite images, street level photography and user generated images, that together are forever changing how people use maps and explore the world.

Could Maps be the next big thing in iOS? Will Apple out-map Google in the near future? Built-in navigation coupled with 3D technologies would certainly be a killer upgrade over the current Maps. While it might not come anytime soon, you have to think that Apple is certainly planning something big in the way of maps.

Siri Hacked, Working on Jailbroken iPhone 4

Apple designed Siri so that it would work only on the iPhone 4S. Nothing like a challenge of epic proportions for the jailbreak community, who appear to have cracked the code this evening. Steven Troughton Smith and chpwn have managed to get Siri working on a jailbroken iPhone 4 and a current-generation iPod touch. This means they have successfully found a way around the authentication issues that plagued previous attempts at getting Siri working on non-iPhone 4S devices.

In order to get this working, the team moved compiled code components from the iPhone 4S to other devices. It’s not clear if and when this will be released for public consumption.

Apple acquired 3D mapping company, C3 Technologies?

Apple acquires 3D mapping company, 3C Technologies?

According to Mark Gurman over at 9to5Mac, Apple has acquired a third mapping company, this time 3D specialists C3 Technologies.

Sources say that C3 Technologies CEO Mattias Astrom , C3 Technologies CFO Kjell Cederstrand, and lead C3 Technologies Product Manager Ludvig Emgard are now working within Apple’s iOS division. The leading trio, along with most of the former C3 Technologies team, is still working as a team in Sweden (interestingly, the division is now called “Sputnik”), where the C3 Technologies company was located prior to the Apple acquisition.

They specialize in making 3D maps from photo data using declassified missile-targeting technology. Apple previously bought map data companies PlaceBase and Poly9, and while they still rely on Google for the actual maps in OS X and iOS, it’s not hard to imagine some fantastic new Map app just may be in our future.

Here’s a video showing how C3 works.
