Daily Tip: How to set up mail aliases on iPhone, iPad

Have a email account with multiple aliases and curious how to send email from those aliases on iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? While Apple made this easy on Mac by letting you simply type a comma and string the aliases together, iOS doesn’t allow you to enter commas, so no easy aliases. Luckily, however, we have a work around! To find out how to get your mail aliases working, follow along after the break!

In this example, leanna@smartphoneexperts.com is the main email address and leanna@tipb.com is the alias.

Now you can send emails from your alias! However, with this current set up, you are not able to send emails from your main address. If you want that ability, follow these next steps.

There you go! Now you can send emails from your alias or main address! Take note that whichever address you listed first in the Address field is the default address for this account; however, Mail will choose the correct address when replying to emails.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. Apple releases iWork for iOS betas for developers, includes iCloud support

Documents in the Cloud

Apple has released new iCloud-enabled betas for their iWork apps — Keynote, Pages, and Numbers to developers. The betas, available exclusively through Apple’s iOS developer portal, are universal apps for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and no additional features other than iCloud support appear to have been added.

Documents in the Cloud was one of the key iCloud features announced by Steve Jobs at WWDC and the iWork for iOS beta apps are the first test implementation of that feature.

The beta apps come in a DMG file and need to be extracted, dragged to iTunes 10.5 beta 4, and then synced over to an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 5 beta 4. (And yes, it’s somewhat ironic the first iCloud enabled versions of iWork can’t be installed OTA over iCloud, but this is a beta, right?)

Note: It looks like some people aren’t having luck syncing the iWork apps over, or wait for them to sync only to watch them disappear immediately after syncing. We’re not sure what’s causing that, and what’s allowing for successful syncs, but let us know how you fair in the comments.

Om Nom Hungry for More, Cut the Rope 2 Details Emerge

I seriously can’t imagine being able to eat pounds of candy at one time, especially the amount that iPhone puzzler, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/cut-the-rope/id380293530?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cut-the-rope/id380293530?mt=8">Cut the Rope’s star Om Nom chomps up. Going through over 150 boxes, it’s a wonder that he’s not full or unable to eat yet – and that’s definitely interesting considering there’s a new sequel planned for Om Nom to feast upon. onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/wireless.ign.com/articles/118/1185343p1.html');" target="_blank" href="http://wireless.ign.com/articles/118/1185343p1.html">IGN reports that they’ve received exclusive, minor details on a second game, which will be a whole different application than its predecessor rather than yet another content update to the original.

The game will seemingly be yet another puzzler, most probably adding a bunch of new elements to the original gameplay. However, the game will not be taking place in a variety of different boxes, since one screenshot reveals that Om Nom finally [escapes] get out of them. Also, the icon above introduced a new candy shape; a star rather than a circular piece of candy./> href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/om-nom-hungry-for-more-cut-the-rope-2-details-emerge/attachment/cut-the-rope2" rel="attachment wp-att-21170">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/cut-the-rope2.jpg" alt="" title="cut the rope2" width="468" height="351" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-21170" />/> I wouldn’t expect many updates to the original Cut the Rope unless the next version will have its own storyline, which seems very likely as of now. Even though nothing as been officially announced, it’s expected that the game will be based off of a more developed storyline and simply not just an objective. This comes as the result as a new character addition, the Professor, and based on an upcoming Cut the Rope, animated comic for the iPhone.

The original Cut the Rope was great. I href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/cut-the-rope-app-review-cute-artwork-malted-together-with-physics-to-make-the-sweetest-of-all">thought so as did the whole App Store audience. From my review:

“…the game is full of pros and no cons. Even if you aren’t convinced by my review, the game truly is one-of-a-kind proved by its quick rise to the number one spot on the app store. That alone along with the $0.99 should get you on your device immediately downloading the game.”

So, as you can see, the game was a thrill to be played and still is kudos to the semi-constant content updates. You can expect a full review and/or further details as they surface, but all I’ve got to say for now is that I’m excited.

Apple Provides Glimpse of Contacts, Calendar and Mail on iCloud

With Apple’s dot Mac service going away, it certainly made sense that Apple would bring those services to iCloud in the form of new web apps. Today, they have updated their iCloud pages to provide a look at the apps that will be part of the new site. href="http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/contacts-calendar-mail.html">Contacts, Calendar and Mail will all be available via iCloud and they look just like their respective desktop apps do in Lion.

Readdle Celebrates Its Fourth Birthday with Sales and Giveaways

Readdle has been a major player in the business and utility sections of the App Store, creating unique applications that give users advanced functionality. After selling 3,150,000 copies of their applications over the past four years, the company is holding big sales and a giveaway to thank fans for their support and perhaps make a few more since Readdle has at least one app for each professional/business user.

One of Readdle’s most recent apps, Scanner Pro, has been very popular amongst users looking to turn their iPhone into a device that can for all intent-and-purposes function as a scanner. In fact, it is currently the number one business app in the United States App Store as well as in 19 international markets. Apps more synonymous with professional onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad users such as PDF Expert and the newer PDF Converter have also been hits developed by Readdle.

Over the next four days, Readdle will be giving out an iPad every day to Twitter (onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/twitter.com/#!/readdle');" target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/#!/readdle">@Readdle) followers that Tweet about the company’s big app sale. To enter once you become a follower, Tweet the following:

30% Sale for all iOS @Readdle apps. Follow and Retweet/> to win one of 4 iPads. http://readdle.com/4years #Giveaway

style="color: #000000; font-style: normal;">Sales on Readdle apps are a big deal for two reasons that tie in with each other: for the company, discounts are rare since the apps have a quality brand and audience already established, but what would a celebration be without incentives for users? Check out the full list below:

The sales will only last for about 48 hours, so make sure to grab at least one of the apps while you can still get a good deal on a very versatile collection. With Readdle’s breakout success, it will be interesting to see where the company heads from here.

We will be giving away three copies of PDF Converter, which we had found note-worthy enough to post href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/readdles-pdf-converter-closes-a-file-compatibility-gap">about when it was released, tomorrow so be on the look-out for that!

iPhone 5 Cases Spread Like Wildfire

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/5989322946_8c33fea6ff_o.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22833" title="5989322946_8c33fea6ff_o" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/5989322946_8c33fea6ff_o.jpg" alt="" width="488" height="340" />

More and more, the cases being seen outside of China seem to point to an iPhone 5 with a curved back, larger face, but thinner body. And now these iPhone 5 cases have become a downpour, flooding in from all directions. href="http://micgadget.com/14193/iphone-5-cases-are-everywhere-in-china-now/">MIC Gadgets has a gallery full of some very bright and colorful looking iPhone 5 demo cases, which the manufacturers are allegedly shopping around for 2 yuan (about $0.30) per case, with a minimum order of 500.

It’s not uncommon for a couple of false positives to come through these leaked Chinese cases, but there are so many of the iPhone 5 ones that match this design that I would be bewildered if they weren’t right.

Apple Releases iOS 4.3 For AppleTV

Without even so much as an announcement, Apple has updated AppleTV to iOS 4.3, build 8F455. The official AppleTV software page href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4448">doesn’t reflect the change, but we’re hearing about it from a href="http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/08/01/apple-tv-purchased-shows">number href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/01/apple-tv-software-update-adds-streaming-of-purchased-tv-shows/">of href="http://www.macstories.net/news/apple-releases-ios-4-3-for-apple-tv/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+macstoriesnet+%28MacStories%29&utm_content=Google+Reader">sources. The big change is that it seems to add support for href="http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/08/01/apple-tv-purchased-shows">streaming of purchased content:

You can buy — not just rent but buy — new episodes directly from your Apple TV, and access and stream any TV show episodes you’ve previously purchased using your iTunes account. (I’m not quite sure if it has all episodes — but it’s showing me all the TV shows I can remember buying from iTunes.)

TV shows are also now listed in the “Purchased” section of the iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, and iPad. In other words, Apple just rolled out a cloud-based storage locker for TV shows. Next up (I hope): movies.

Apparently this update also adds support for Vimoe and YouTube playlists.

Unfortunately, we’re also hearing that it’s USA only for now.

Forbes Profiles Jailbreaking Legend Comex

href="http://blogs.forbes.com/andygreenberg/2011/08/01/meet-comex-the-iphone-uber-hacker-who-keeps-outsmarting-apple/">Forbes has posted a rather interesting piece about Nicholas Allegra, the 19-year old better known on the tech scene as Comex, a major force on the jailbreaking scene, and the man behind JailbreakMe.com. It’s an interesting look at why he does what he does, and while it’s not exactly replete with technical details, it does paint the picture of a blisteringly smart young man with a penchant for taking things apart on a software level.

And you can bet that Apple and him will continue their little cat and mouse game until he gets hired by someone who can put him to use — or Apple chills out about letting people do what they want with devices they own.

InstantCam claims to improve the speed of your iPhone camera

InstantCam is a new app that claims to decrease the time it takes for you to take a picture with your iPhone. One of the loudest complaints about the iPhone camera, is the time it takes from pressing the camera icon on the home screen to actually being able to take a picture. This app claims to dramatically speed up the process.

Have you ever missed that special moment just because it took too long to start the camera app and press the right button? Do you have children and find it difficult to keep up with their pace? Then this app is perfect for you! InstantCam allows you to launch and start shooting pictures lightning fast! If you want you can even let the app shoot pictures automatically as soon as it’s possible! InstantCam is also very smart and saves the images in memory to be as fast as possible when you need it. The images are then saved when the opportunity arises or in the background after closing the app.

Features:

  • Minimalistic user interface so that you can concentrate on whats important

  • Continuous shooting (burst) of images (automatic or manual) with variable speed (up to ~1-2 frames/s). All in full resolution!

  • Gestures to easily control the camera functions

  • Photograph by tapping the screen

  • Start burst mode using long press

  • Focus on double tap. If you want you can even have the app take a photo as soon as the focus is found!

  • Toggle Light/Torch by swiping the screen (if supported).

  • Flash the screen on capture

I have been playing with this app for the last few hours and it definitely cuts down on the opening time of the camera lens. My rough tests appear to show that it is ready to shoot in half the time that the stock app takes.

The app costs $0.99 and is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad 2.

Create geometric trees with Geom-e-Tree for iPhone and iPad

Geom-e-Tree is a great geometry app that creates fractals-like trees and has been updated with new themes.

Create an infinite number of fractal-like trees with a few simple gestures. Surprise yourself and friends with the variety and complexity of the patterns you discover just by changing the number, angle, and the common ratio of your tree’s branches. It’s math and it’s art – and it’s totally captivating.

We’ve added rainbow and “psychedelic” themes, some wild black and white themes (Magpie and Op Art), as well as a few monochromatic themes (India Ink and Pop Sticks). The new Themes tab displays all the themes and allows you to choose one for the current Tree. The Arboreturm remembers the themes of newly added trees. Geom-e-Tree also includes all the themes from our new version of Geom-e-Twee!

In mathematics, a fractal is is geometric shape that is split into parts, each of which is a smaller copy of the whole. This app is great twist on that idea and it’s fun to watch your trees grow. They even snuck in some famous fractals! Even my 11 month old daughter enjoys this app – she stared at it in awe of the colorful trees growing.

Geom-e-Tree is available on the iPhone and iPad for $1.99. The junior app, Geom-e-Twee is available on the iPhone and iPad for free for a short time.

Screenshots and video after the break.

Apple TV 4.3 update streams purchased shows, adds Vimeo video

Apple had finally released iOS 4.3 for Apple TV 2, adding the ability to stream purchased shows via iCloud (I’m betting this is US only?) and watch Vimeo video. As noted by Apple:

  • iTunes TV Shows: Purchase your favorite TV shows directly from the iTunes Store, and watch the shows you already own, commercial-free in HD.

  • Vimeo: Browse and play videos from Vimeo, access your video inbox, and mark videos you want to watch later.

If you’ve gotten the update, let me know if you notice any other changes and/or improvements.

Apple adds iCloud TV Show streaming to iPhone, iPad

Apple adds iCloud TV Show streaming to iPhone, iPad

Apple TV isn’t the only iOS device getting iCloud TV Show streaming today, as our writer at large, Chad Garrett, also spotted it on his iPhone. It seems limited to TV Shows (no movies), and to the US for now, but it’s nice to see Apple adding functionality to iCloud so quickly — even before the formal launch this fall.

Are you seeing TV shows under your purchased content in iTunes.app?

Update: Not all shows yet, apparently. Perhaps some networks haven’t (yet) agreed to be part of the service?

Spotify for iPhone: What You Need to Know

As you’ve all probably heard by now, thanks to all the chatter, Spotify recently launched in the states accompanied by a nice, little iPhone application to go along with. Currently only offering one way to become a member, which is by invite (unless you decide to go premium), the service streams a whole bunch of music for its members absolutely [kind of] free.id="more-21088"> I take a look at the service and give you my recommendation along with a brief comparison with iTunes Home Sharing, which shares certain characteristics to what the iPhone application of Spotify allows you to do.

Spotify was just introduced in the United States, and is currently available in a total of eight countries, seven of which are located in Europe: Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Also, before I get into things, let me explain how the different memberships work. There are currently three different memberships that Spotify hosts. When you first join, you’ll automatically become a free member, which gives you most of the perks with ads. You can then upgrade to an Unlimited membership for $4.99 per month, which gives you most perks without ads and then you can further upgrade to a a Premium membership for $9.99 per month, which gives you access to, simply, everything! For more information on the ranks, if you will, check out onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.spotify.com/us/get-spotify/overview/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.spotify.com/us/get-spotify/overview/">this page on Spotify’s website.

Once you sign up for the free/premium-based service, you’ll gain access to millions of your favorite songs courtesy of the somewhat-comparable-to-iTunes alternative, Spotify application that you download to both your computer and mobile device. Once installed on your computer you’ll be able to load all of your songs from your hard drive into your library, browse through Spotify’s large collection of songs and charts, make playlists (with songs from their collection with no purchase as well as your own songs, catch explained below), and more – to describe the overall experience, I’d say say something very much like iTunes.

The mobile version is basically what was described above, coded to fit on the iPhone’s screen. However, Spotify for the iPhone (onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/spotify/id324684580?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/spotify/id324684580?mt=8">iPhone link [FREE]) also introduces a new way to get your music onto your iOS device without having to include iTunes in the process. What iOS 5 will be bringing as a hyped feature, is the ability to sync your device using solely your WiFi rather than your computer; Spotify offers this now. If your computer is on the same WiFi network as your device, desired playlists from the desktop version will be synced over the air, without any connection to the computer or manual syncing required to your device. It’s an amazingly simple process that just gets rid of the need for iTunes, already, before iOS 5. The only two restrictions here are that any songs that you don’t own, that were added to playlists that are synced, cannot be played without a premium membership. Similarly, here you have access to the large database but without the ability to play any songs. Sad, but you have to upgrade for the privilege to do that.

So, say you were looking into the service. What makes you want it over iTunes? The few pluses I found for Spotify against iTunes were that Spotify provides you with album artwork for songs it recognizes in your iTunes library – yeah, small, but noticeable when you have a 1,000+ song library on iTunes without artwork and then suddenly have a cover picture for almost every single one of your songs. It additionally completes all of the fields for a song (album, artist, etc.) if not already filled out, and it provides an easy way to get your music on to your iPhone, iPod Touch or onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad without the hassle of syncing involved with iTunes.

The latter of the pros can be done with iTunes Home Sharing. After enabling the iTunes service that recently became compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/device-home-sharing-what-you-need-to-know">steps here), you will gain access to playlists on your computer’s iTunes, although you won’t be able to take these on-the-air playlists offline, whereas Spotify enables you to do so, in some cases depending on your status as a member.

My verdict? Getting a Spotify account may not be as fulfilling as expected unless you’re up for spending monthly to get premium service – for iOS anyways. With a free membership, you’re not getting much that you can’t otherwise attain by other methods, or by the standard way of iTunes. However, it’s great for the computer when looking for different music and a massive, easily navigable database. I would offer out invites, but there’s no good way to do it. So if you you really, truly want an account, just go to onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.spotify.com');" target="_blank" href="http://www.spotify.com">Spotify.com and enter your email address in the field; you should get an invitation when Spotify can fit you in. I got mine just one day after submitting my email, which is pretty desirable considering others have had to wait for weeks.

MySaver: Preserve Your Charge and Sync Cable

There are so many Kickstarter projects that I usually include all of the interesting ones as a compilation in one post, but I felt that this certain one deserved a whole post for itself. So, behold, the MySaver, the perfect solution to fully preserve your iPhone’s, iPod Touch’s and onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad’s charge and sync cables.

If you have more charge and sync cables you can shake a stick at, you may want to disregard this article, but for those who have torn through a huge number of cables, like me, listen up! The MySaver is currently being funded over at onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.kickstarter.com/projects/1499810396/mysaver-protection-for-your-ipad-iphone-and-ipod-c?ref=live');" target="_blank" href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1499810396/mysaver-protection-for-your-ipad-iphone-and-ipod-c?ref=live">Kickstarter, and it may be something you want to back or look into:

Currently being funded

As you all probably know, extensive use of the cable causes breakage at the bases. Both of the wire’s ends tend to split exposing the inner wires, which further causes your cable to look ugly and lose the Apple “touch” you all like. The MySaver is a product made out of full-grade aluminum, which fits around your iPhone’s, iPod Touch’s or iPads charge and sync wire. So after it happens, you may be tempted to purchase a new wire, which can cost a large amount if bought from Apple (third-party wires are available for much cheaper, but are not recommended).

The MySaver will be available later in a pro form and DIY form, if successfully funded, and will retail for $24.99 and $10.99, respectively. It will come in five different colors, “carefully selected to match the Smart Cover for the iPad”: silver, green, blue, pink, and orange.

I will definitely be looking to purchase this once, and if, it is released soon. It looks like it’ll surely serve a useful purpose in preventing your wire from charging; after all, it’s horrible when your iOS device can’t be used due to a lack of charge originally because of a torn wire.

Get Your Favorite Game Characters Physically Retro’d

Back in the day when pixel-style artwork was the norm, I’m sure that many people envisioned polished graphics in their games hoping to see something different. Now, it’s the other way around; I, anyways, love applications on the App Store that feature 8-bit, retro artwork while I have an almost endless amount of games with retina, high quality artwork that I could be playing. So for retro junkies like me, there’s one more step to fully proclaiming your addicted to pixels, and that’s by getting your favorite game characters 8-Bit’d.

I was indirectly pointed to onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.8bitcraft.com');" target="_blank" href="http://www.8bitcraft.com">8bitcraft the other day, who creates 8-bit versions of famous game characters using different colored beads. These are then used as magnets and in paintings. And most of their bead-sprites, if you will, are all reasonably priced as well, with supposed better quality than most of their competitors. On the website (link above) you’ll see the large list of games’ characters are being made, most of which have pictures and are from some time back. Meaning, you probably won’t be seeing

Game developers or certain game fanatics: you can also get a character custom made that’s not on their list of characters. This follows the same pricing scheme as the bead-sprites they offer, which is number of beads x $0.01 + flat rate of $3.00. It would certainly help if the desired character is already a pixel character in its according game, but I guess you may be able to get past without that, although you’ll probably end up paying more. This whole aforementioned perk means that iPhone game characters can be replicated. I’m simply just waiting for someone to get an OmNom from Cut the Rope – imagine how many car crashes that would cause if hanging off of the rear bumper of a car!

Most people have been very satisfied with what they have received from 8bitcraft. Everything seems, based on the various pictures hosted on the website, like it has been crafted well, with time and effort both taking parts in the process.

Let us know if you’ve had any past experience with 8bitcraft, or are interested. I’m really leaning towards buying something from the website, like maybe the evil scientists from LoE or something of the sort. They just look awesome hanging on the fridge, your car or anywhere else you [dare] put them.

MySaver: Preserve Your Charge and Sync Cables

Foxconn To Replace Workers With 1 Million Robots Over Next Three Years

Apple’s big manufacturer in China Foxconn is looking to replace a chunk of its workers with robots over the next couple of years, href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2011-07/30/c_131018764.htm">reports Xinhua:

Taiwanese technology giant Foxconn will replace some of its workers with 1 million robots in three years to cut rising labor expenses and improve efficiency, said Terry Gou, founder and chairman of the company, late Friday.

The robots will be used to do simple and routine work such as spraying, welding and assembling which are now mainly conducted by workers, said Gou at a workers’ dance party Friday night.

The company already has 10,000 robots, with this number set to skyrocket over the next three years. Foxconn also does assembly work for Sony and Nokia.

While it’s not clear how many workers will be replaced by these robots, but given the scandals about suicide at Foxconn, you can bet the management likes the idea of a workforce with far fewer demands.

Fake iPhone 5 Already Available

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/1115_110728011500_1-500x327.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22839" title="1115_110728011500_1-500x327" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/1115_110728011500_1-500x327.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="327" />

Oh snap, that didn’t take long! It’s a fake iPhone 5, with a slimmer body and curved back! This rather shoddy looking fake is being marketed as the “iPhone 5″ href="http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=12287557523">over dodgy chinese websites, and for around $100 you get this bizarre device with  JAVA based OS, MP3 and MP4 playback and Wi-Fi.

This fake is 7mm thick where the iPhone 4 is 9.33mm, and seems to have cribbed the vaguely correct shape from the leaked iPhone 5 cases — but this doesn’t have the mute switch on the opposite side like the cases suggest. Plus it really, really obviously looks fake.

New iPhone Coming in October, Not in September

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/100108_october.jpg">src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/100108_october.jpg" alt="October iPhone 5 release" title="100108_october" width="380" height="380" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-22827" />

According to href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/new-iphone-in-october-not-september/">All Things D, rumors of a September iPhone 5 release are incorrect. Speculation that the href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/rumor-att-employees-instructed-of-vacation-blackout-at-end-of-september/2011/07/30/">AT&T vacation blackout was tied to new iPhone is also bunk.

“I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch,” said the source familiar with the plans.

Their sources have said it’s coming this October, while refusing to offer up a hard launch date. Of course, this will likely lead to the next round of rumor hounds on the actual date.

Shark Week Gets Its Own App

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.mgknhcgu.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22830" title="mzl.mgknhcgu.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.mgknhcgu.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

I assume everyone is watching Shark Week as we speak? After all, who doesn’t love a week of of television devoted to those brutal and beautiful killers of the sea? Capitalizing on the week’s huge popularity, Discovery has created a companion app called href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/shark-week-live/id447655069?mt=8">Shark Week Live to make your week that much more awesome.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t stream or anything useful like that, but rather works as a real-time companion to their television feed. It’ll display information that syncs up with the programming to make it that much cooler. Here’s the official description:

SHARK WEEK LIVE is a co-viewing app, designed to enhance your enjoyment of the Shark Week TV shows on the Discovery Channel. Just activate the app while you’re watching Shark Week (July 31st – August 5th on the Discovery Channel), and you will be treated to exclusive behind-the-scenes content synchronized to the TV broadcast. You can also compete in real-time against other viewers, by playing the Shark Week LIVE trivia game.

While this app is iPhone only, all this content is viewable through the official Discovery iPad app.
