Daily Tip: How to change your iPhone or iPad Notification Center alert style

Daily Tip: How to change your iPhone or iPad Notification Center alert style

New to iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and iOS 5 and wondering how to configure Notification Center so you get the alerts you need but not the interruptions you don’t? Luckily, you can choose between 3 different alert styles, from in-your-face popups to subtle banners to none at all. Follow along and we’ll show you how!

iOS 4.3 features: Ping getting pushy with notifications

Popup alerts are the old style iOS notifications of the pass, a big box that leaps out at you and won’t do anything else until you either cancel it or act on it. While old school, these types of alerts still have their place for anything your really don’t want to miss — alarms, calendar appointments, reminders, etc. If you want to be absolutely, positively certain you see something, set notifications to a popup alert.

Banners briefly roll down from the top of the screen. If you don’t want to be bothered by a notification, you simply ignore the banner and go about your business, dismiss the banner by flicking it away, or just wait a couple of seconds and it will roll back up and disappear all on its own. Because they’re subtle, they’re best used for things that are nice-to-known but not incredibly urgent — personal email, social network messages, news alerts, etc. If it’s not critical but you are curious, set notification to banners.

If you set a notification to none, you won’t get an alert at all. No popup, no banner, no nothing. Because you won’t be alerted, this is best for apps that you want to keep around but don’t want to know about unless you specifically open them — games you play infrequently, social apps you seldom visit, apps you only use when traveling, etc. If it’s more interruption than notification, set it to none.

Apple has included deep granular controls in the Notification Center, so configuring it can seem like a daunting task for new users. It’s really simple, however, so just follow these quick steps to help you configure Notification Center in iOS 5:

In addition to the three notification types listed above, you often also have the option to set a sound and/or vibration alert for a notification. Again, if the notification is really important to you — SMS/MMS/iMessage, Twitter DM or Facebook message, work email, etc. you may want to hear and feel when it comes in.

Otherwise, you can turn sound off and enjoy a slightly more peaceful existence.

That’s it, you’re ready to stay informed but not overwhelmed! We’ll be back with more Notification Center tips shortly but in the meantime if you have any advice on keeping alerts under control, let us know in comments!

iOS 5.0.1 Update Causes iPhone 4S To Have Contacts Amnesia

The iOS 5.0.1 update released this week to combat battery issues, seems to have introduced a new bug that affects the contacts on the iPhone 4S. href="http://thestartupfoundry.com/2011/11/10/nasty-bug-in-ios-5-0-1-ota-update-screws-up-address-book-on-the-iphone-4s/">Paul Hontz noticed that upon sending an iMessage to a known contact, the Messages app would forget the name and instead list the phone number of the contact. The contacts remain, so the bug is that it fails to display the appropriate contact.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/610banner.png" class="lightbox" >class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25196" title="610banner" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/610banner.png" alt="Contacts bug" width="610" height="300" />

This bug seems to affect those on a Verizon iPhone 4S who updated to 5.0.1 using the OTA update. James Foster offers a partial fix that corrects incoming calls, but not messages.

Apple pushed href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/apple-releases-ios-5-0-1/2011/11/10/">iOS 5.0.1 after only two beta releases. The end result appears to be the introduction of this contacts bug and concerns that the update might not have solved the battery issues, evidenced by a href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/apple-keeps-looking-into-battery-issues-post-5-0-1/2011/11/11/">statement from Apple that they are continuing to investigate a few issues.

Having issues with your iPhone forgetting contacts? Is this affecting just Verizon iPhone 4S owners or is it more widespread?

Sprint Starts Locking iPhone 4S SIM Cards Today

According to an internal document acquired by href="http://www.sprintfeed.com/2011/11/all-iphone-4s-sims-to-be-locked-at-activation-starting-november-11th/">Sprintfeed, Sprint will begin locking the SIM card on all new iPhone 4S devices.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/sprint-iphone-4s-unlock.png" class="lightbox" >class="alignnone size-full wp-image-24415" title="sprint-iphone-4s-unlock" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/sprint-iphone-4s-unlock.png" alt="Sprint iPhone 4S unlock" width="469" height="312" />

Starting tomorrow, all iPhone 4S devices will have the SIM locked. The locking occurs during the activation process and is invisible to the customer (no extra action is needed by customer or rep).

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/0iPhoneSIM-500x227.png" class="lightbox" >class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25190" title="0iPhoneSIM-500x227" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/0iPhoneSIM-500x227.png" alt="Sprint locking iPhone 4S" width="500" height="227" />

There was href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/sprint-plans-to-lock-iphone-4s-then-offer-unlock-to-good-customers/2011/10/14/">confusion in the Sprint camp with regards to the microSIM card slot, which shipped completely unlocked. Shortly after release, Sprint issued this statement:

…the Sprint style="color: #212121;">iPhone 4S will ship with its micro-SIM slot unlocked. However, Sprint now says that it will be locking that slot “shortly after launch” via an update pushed to those devices. After the slot has been locked, Sprint says that it will allow customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use in the future.

According to the memo, existing Sprint iPhone 4S customers will not see a change to their SIM card, so they will effectively be able to keep their unlock.

Having an unlocked SIM slot allows users to utilize local SIM cards when traveling overseas and not having to pay higher rates associated with roaming charges.

Jump and Splash is a new iPhone and iPad game available in the App Store. In Jump and Splash, you control Pilu, a little fish who’s lost his mom, by jumping through the side-scrolling levels picking up coins and destroying crabs along the way.

I’ve played a few rounds of Jump and Splash and find it to be pretty fun. It’s extremely similar to Whale Trail, so if you like that game, you’ll like Jump and Splash.

A beach should be a dream place…
But when a tiny fish looks for his mom, a new adventure begins!
Hurry up Pilu! The water is going away!
Swim, jump and fly for your life before it’s too late!

Apple Keeps Looking Into Battery Issues Post 5.0.1

Yesterday’s href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/apple-releases-ios-5-0-1/2011/11/10/" target="_blank">release of iOS 5.0.1 was largely a bug-fix update, addressing the battery-use concerns of a number of iOS 5 users. Some users are still struggling, though, as documented in the Apple Support forums. Complaints range from small drops in battery on standby to noticeable plunges in just a few minutes.

href="http://allthingsd.com/20111111/apple-we-continue-to-investigate-iphone-battery-issues/" target="_blank">AllThingsD has been keeping an eye on the problem, and has just heard back from Apple:

“The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices,” the company said in a statement given to AllThingsD. “We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”

Our batteries seem to be doing well post 5.0.1, but for the users who are still experiencing significant battery drain, this should come as a relief.

Quick Guide: Siri Tips and Tricks for Beginners

If you’ve recently picked up a new iPhone 4S and haven’t start playing with Siri, there’s no time like the present to start. Though both novel and powerful, Siri isn’t always quite as good as you might expect if you’ve seen Apple’s ads. But with a little tender loving care, you can get Siri working for you more efficiently.

Correct Siri’s Mistakes

Every now and then, Siri will make a mistake. Depending on your accent or clarity of speech, this might be more often than you’d like. Thankfully there are two ways to keep Siri working with the right information.

The first is a hands-on approach. If Siri makes a mistake, take a look at your device. Scroll to the top of the screen and you should see your query transcribed, and any sections Siri doesn’t understand will be underlined in blue. Tap on your query to edit it.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/siricorrect.png" class="lightbox" >class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25166" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/siricorrect.png" alt="" width="500" height="375" />

But if you’re using voice commands already, you probably don’t want to switch to typing. Correcting Siri verbally might be a challenge if the software doesn’t understand your accent, but if you’ve just found yourself mumbling, speak clearly and repeat yourself. Or, if you’re trying to dictate a message or email, try using the following commands:

You can also correct message recipients on the fly, by saying “No, send it to (name) instead.”

Get Around Location Restrictions

With Siri still in beta, the software in available in many areas that aren’t quite ready for it. Unfortunately, that means all the location-based features are missing in those places. Rather than try to answer questions like “Where is the nearest Starbucks?” or “Is it raining?” with possibly incorrect information, the information is completely unavailable.

While you wait for Siri’s location services to be enabled in your area, you can get around some of these limitations. To get Siri to tell you the weather in your area, include your location in the query. “What is the weather in Vancouver, Canada?” will get you an answer even while asking Siri what the weather is while in Vancouver won’t. Use the nearest major city when you ask — smaller towns aren’t often recognized.

If you want Siri to find you directions home, you’re going to have to be able to look at your phone. Instead of asking Siri to find you the route home, ask Siri to search Google for your address, then click the Places tab in the results. This should show you the location you’re looking for, with a button for getting directions through Google Maps. You can do the same by searching for a business name or type.

Use Different Search Engines

If Google isn’t working out for you, you can make Siri search Yahoo! or Bing instead. Saying “Search Bing for X” or “Search Yahoo! for Y” works, or you can change your default search engine in Settings > Safari > Search Engine.

Find the Best Queries

Siri can understand a huge selection of queries, and seems to be learning more each day. Sometimes, though, the software gets hung up on a particular way of wording things and there’s nothing you can do but use the correct one.

href="http://www.tuaw.com/2011/10/05/iphone-4s-what-can-you-say-to-siri/" target="_blank">TUAW has an exhaustive list of Siri-friendly queries, but if you’re just looking for a few foolproof ways to talk to your new digital assistant, here are the simplest ways to get the following jobs done:

Of course, those are just a few examples of some of the most important tasks Siri can handle for you. Experiment — not only are there lots of useful functions to be found, but Siri can roll with the punches for a surprising variety of joke requests.

Correct Names and Relationships

Siri can be awful at pronouncing some names, and her ability to understand relationships depends on whether you’re syncing your contacts through iCloud or Google. Learn more inhref="http://www.everythingicafe.com/quick-guide-teach-siri-names-and-relationships/2011/11/05/" target="_blank"> our guide.

Learn More

If you’re on the go and you’re trying to remember what Siri can do, just bring the Siri prompt up by holding your home button and tap the “i” icon beside “What can I help you with.” This will bring up a list of suggestions. If all else fails, though, just ask. If Siri doesn’t understand, you’ll know, and you can always say “Cancel.”

Sprint to SIM lock all new iPhone 4S activations starting today

According to a leaked internal Sprint memo, all Sprint iPhone 4S handsets sold starting today will have their SIM card slots locked to Sprint. It has never been fully clear how Sprint was shipping its iPhone 4S models but it now looks like they were originally shipping them with unlocked SIMS.

According to the memo, the SIM locking will be done during the iPhone’s activation process and it will be done invisibly. The customer will not see any notification of it happening.

What does this mean for any new Sprint iPhone 4S users? Well you will lose the ability to use a local SIM card if you travel out of the U.S. You will now have to have a roaming agreement in place with Sprint and pay the much higher call and data charges. One bit of good news, today’s decision does not impact current iPhone 4S Sprint users; we assume that this means their SIM card slots remain unlocked.

Sony CEO also thinks Apple is working on a TV set

Sony CEO also thinks Apple is working on a TV set

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer — like most of the rest of the world — thinks Apple is working on a television set.

Stringer declined to provide details about what Sony is developing but said “there’s a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set.” He added that he has “no doubt” Apple’s Steve Jobs also was working on changing the traditional TV set.

No surprise there, since Jobs said as much, and Stringer provides nothing in the way of “they’re sourcing components from Sony” to jazz up the story as he’s done previously for things like higher megapixel iPhone cameras.

Speaking of iPhone, some 5 years later, Stringer claims Sony is working hard to make up ground there as well.

Meanwhile, Stringer said other phone makers will catch up to the iPhone, but their devices need to become “seamless.” “The beauty of the iPhone is it’s really well organized,” he said.

And just FYI, Stringer says he’s also not leaving Sony, despite their lackluster performance under his tenure.

Rumor: Facebook to switch from opt-out to opt-in, better protect personal data

Rumor: Facebook to switch from opt-out to opt-in, better protect personal data

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Facebook might just be close to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that would fundamentally change the way they treat their users, and their users’ personal information.

According to people familiar with the talks, the settlement would require Facebook to obtain users’ consent before making “material retroactive changes” to its privacy policies. That means that Facebook must get consent to share data in a way that is different from how the user originally agreed the data could be used.

Facebook, which makes one of the most popular apps for iPhone and iPad, has been charged with misleading users about how private information was being handled — making it public by default. Under this settlement, Facebook would switch from opt-out to opt-in, letting users decide what they want to share before sharing it, and be subject to audits for 20 years to ensure compliance (much as Google has recently agreed to, and Twitter to a lesser period).
