Apple to allow App Store rentals in iTunes?

The Tech Erra points to a snippet of code discovered in iTunes 10.5 beta 9 indicating that Apple may begin allowing App Store app rentals.

“510.036″ = “Apps are automatically removed from your iTunes library at the end of the rental period.”;

This either suggests iOS users could finally have the ability to play around with an app before deciding to purchase, or someone just got sloppy with some strings.

Personally, I’ve desired some type of demo capability in my iPhone ever since Apple debuted the App Store in 2008. A “try before you buy” approach could mean more sales for developers and a more pleasurable experience for users. But rental? How much would it cost to “rent” an app, and for how long? 15 cents for 24 hours as opposed to a full 99 cent purchase? Seems a bit awkward..

Adobe announces Photoshop Touch and Creative Cloud

Adobe, today, announced the development of Photoshop Touch, a very robust photo editing app for iPad, and Creative Cloud, a cloud service for storing and syncing Adobe project files.

Photoshop Touch looks incredible. Adobe shared a quick demo of it in action (see video below) and, boy, am I impressed. One of its features is the Scribble Selection Tool which makes selecting parts of your image a breeze: just make two separate traces for the inside and outside of your border, and boom, Photoshop Touch automagically selects the border that you want.

This is just the beginning for Photoshop Touch. In the initial release, we’ve laid the foundation – a core set of Photoshop capabilities designed for a tablet such as layers, selection tools, adjustments, and effects. However, we don’t want Photoshop Touch to just be a subset of our desktop imaging features. We’re exploring new ways to be creative and taking advantage of the unique characteristics of a tablet device. The Camera Fill feature does just that, feeding a live stream from your device’s camera right into an active layer or selection.

Adobe also introduced the following five new apps:

In addition to these six new apps, Adobe also announced Adobe Creative Cloud, which will serve as a hub for viewing, sharing and syncing files and include 20GB of storage.

However, Adobe’s goal is to develop Creative Cloud into so much more. They plan to give access to the portfolio of Adobe Creative Suite tools as well as the six Adobe Touch Apps, provide a method of delivering interactive publications on tablets, and create a community of sharing and connecting.

Adobe® Creative Cloud is a major new initiative that radically redefines the content creation process. Adobe Creative Cloud will become the focal point for creativity, where millions can access desktop and tablet applications, use essential creative services, and share their best work.

Each of the six new apps will be available on the iPad in early 2012 for $9.99. The “highly attractive price” for Adobe Creative Cloud will be announced in November.

Check out the video of Photoshop Touch in action below.

Twas the Night Before, Final Predictions?

Twas the night before iPhonemas, when all through the campus/> Not an employee was stirring, not even Steve Jobs./> The inventory was cleared in Apple Stores with care,/> In hopes that new iPhones would soon be there.

The early adopters were nestled all snug with their iPads,/> While visions of iOS 5 danced in their heads,/> And mamma with her iPod, and I with my iPhone 4,/> Had just told the rumor mill to go on a long fall’s nap

When out on the keynote stage there arose such a clatter,/> I sprang from the desk to see what was the chatter./> Away to the Mac I flew like a flash,/> Opened live blogs and threw my iPhone 4 in the trash

The light on the glimmer of the brand new phone/> Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below./> When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,/> But an iPhone 4S, and eight bumper cases.

With Tim Cook at stage, so lively and quick,/> I knew in a moment there must be iPhone 5./> More rapid than A5 his coursers they came,/> And he whistled, and shouted, and called features by name!

“Now, larger screen! Now, 4″! Now, Retina Display!/> On, A5! On, dual cores! On, nine times faster graphics!/> To hit store shelves soon!/> Now, pre-order! Pre-order! Pre-order all!”

Steve spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,/> And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk./> And laying his finger aside of his nose,/> And giving a nod, up the iChimney he rose!

He sprang to his Benz, to his team gave a whistle,/> And away they all flew like the down of a thistle./> But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,/> “Happy iPhonemas to all, and to all a sold-out launch day!”

(Based on the classic “A Visit from St. Nicholas” poem.)

What does tomorrow hold for all of the iPhone fans out there? If I was one to go wild with predictions, I would have to say that we will indeed see a larger screen, faster performance, as well as a redesigned look and feel with the new iPhone 5. Worst case scenario is that only an iPhone 4S is announced with its most significant feature being a performance boost.

After all this time and the amount of iPhone 4′s sold, I would onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.gamblingiq.com');" target="_blank" title="bet" href="http://www.gamblingiq.com">bet that the iPhone 5 is introduced tomorrow. The rumors of Sprint href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/sprint-may-exclusively-get-iphone-5-in-a-multi-billion-dollar-deal-updated-iphone-4s5-feature-lists" target="_blank">exclusively offering the fifth-generation iPhone make sense, so I would not write those off. Something tells me that the brand new, “revolutionary” voice-control hub Assistant will make an appearance as well. Tomorrow will either be a very interesting keynote day or a big disappointment in the iOS world.

Daily Tip: How to share iPhone and iPad apps you like via the App Store

Daily Tip: How to share apps you like via the App Store

Apple has posted a short tip on how to share the iPad and iPhone apps you like right from the iTunes App Store page. If you click or tap an App Store link here at TiPb, or are simply browsing and come across something you know will interest a friend or special someone, it’s great to be able to send it them via email. Here’s how.

Whether you shop on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use Tell a Friend and Gift This App to share your enthusiasm with friends. On an app’s page in the App Store on the computer, click the downward pointing triangle next to the Buy App or Free App button to see the options–Tell a Friend, which lets you send an email link, and Gift this App, which lets you buy the app for someone else. On the iPhone and iPod touch, scroll down to the bottom of an app’s page to find the buttons for those options. On the iPad, use the links on the upper right of an app’s page. In all cases, you’ll be asked to sign in with your Apple ID if you haven’t already, before you complete your intended action.

There you go, that’s it! If you have any other cool ways to share your apps, let me know!

Report: iPhone 5 To Be Sprint Exclusive

Okay readers, time to get out your salt. I am in no way convinced of this rumor, for a number of reasons I’ll get to later, but we’re hitting this anyway. To start with, the WSJ is reporting href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203405504576603053795839250.html">that Sprint is getting in on the iPhone — and the buy-in is astronomical: 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years, costing $20 billion at current market rates, which would probably make them lose money until 2014 on the deal.

We’ve seen a lot of rumors about Sprint getting the next iPhone, so that I can buy.

href="http://www.bgr.com/2011/10/03/sprint-guarantees-to-buy-over-20-billion-in-iphones-from-apple-launching-the-iphone-5-exclusively/">But over at BGR they’re saying the deal goes beyond that, and that Sprint is forking out this huge, huge commitment in exchange for something special: the exclusive rights to the iPhone 5. Not the iPhone 4S, which will go everywhere, but the totally redesigned iPhone 5 — which AT&T and Verizon won’t get until Q1 2012, and will be a 4G device.

I really don’t know what to make of that rumor. If it’s true, Apple could potentially be alienating a huge number of users — the Apple faithful who jumped on AT&T when the first iPhone came out, and have stuck with the company since then. If the iPhone 5 is Sprint only for Q4, that’s millions of pissed off users who will want to upgrade.

I’m skeptical, to put it lightly.

iOS App Rentals In The Works?

style="text-align: left;">href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/original.png">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23946" title="original" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/original.png" alt="" width="581" height="65" />Apparently today is the day for href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/report-iphone-5-to-be-sprint-exclusive/2011/10/03/">crazy rumors. href="http://thetecherra.com/2011/10/01/apple-to-allow-ios-app-rentals-soon/">The Tech Erra has reportedly found this string inside iTunes 10.5 beta 9, and it suggests that you might be able to rent iOS apps in the near future. Rent apps? What?

style="text-align: left;">There are two ways I could see this happening. One would be as a way of try-before-you-buy. Let’s say I’m looking for a really good app of a specific type, like how I was hunting for a decent white noise generator recently. Rentals would allow me to try out four or five of them and figure out which I like before dropping the money on one. The big question about this is how the pricing would work. $0.10 for a rental? $0.01?

style="text-align: left;">The other option I could see would be media apps for a limited time period. An MLB app that lasted for the baseball season at a fixed price, and then disappeared. An app that you can rent for a season of a TV show, or a year of magazines.

style="text-align: left;">This is still a pretty bizarre rumor, but it’s certainly interesting.

App Giveaway: Priorities for iPhone and iPad

Priorities for iPhone and iPad is a productivity app meant to help you with to-dos and lists. It supports custom, color-coded pages for optimum organization. Priorities is now a universal app and data can be synced between all your devices.

I have a mild addiction to to-do apps, which is rather strange considering that I continue to struggle with completing many of my tasks, but that’s beside the point. Of my plethora of to-do apps, Priorities is now one of my favorites. Too often, I run into to-do apps that are packed with so many features, that I practically need to have a separate to-do list for adding items to my to-do list because of how long it takes to add an item. Not with Priorities! Priorities comes with the features I need and adding a new item with a due date and reminder only takes up seconds of my time. Not to mention, the UI is beautiful.

Throw out your pen and paper, because with Priorities, everything you need is literally at your fingertips. Quickly scan through your pages of to-dos with the touch of a finger and add new to-dos with the ease of a single button. Add alerts, due dates, due times, and notes right from the Add screen. Create and save templates to use again and again. Use the syncing feature to backup your data and share pages with a family member, a friend or a coworker. Priorities is a must-have for anyone who wants to stay organized!

The good folks at Hand Carved Code have given us 5 promo codes for Priorities to giveaway to our awesome readers! For a chance to win, just let us know approximately how many items you cross off, or should be crossing off, your to-do each day in the comments below!

Priorities is available on the iPhone and iPad for $2.99.

President Obama got his iPad “a little bit early”… and directly from Steve Jobs

In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, President Obama revealed some well placed connections managed to get him his iPad sooner than most.

“Steve Jobs actually gave it to me, a little bit early,” the president said.

Obama used his early-access iPad to read newspapers that he previously read in print, along with skimming blog posts and other content on the tablet. He did mention, however, that he never comments on the blogs he reads because he has more important things to take care of.

Wouldn’t it be cool if he hit TiPb while perusing the blogosphere?

Sprint gambling $20 billion on iPhone deal?

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has landed a huge $20 billion deal with Apple to purchase roughly 30 million iPhone units over the next four years.

Mr. Hesse told the board the carrier would have to agree to purchase at least 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years—a commitment of $20 billion at current rates—whether or not it could find people to buy them, according to people familiar with the matter. In order to keep the price people pay for the phone low and competitive with rivals, Sprint would be subsidizing the cost of each phone to the tune of about $500, which would take a long time to recoup even at the high monthly fees iPhone users pay.

Sprint is calling this an “all-in” gamble as they’re essentially betting the farm on the iPhone to keep them competitive with Verizon and AT&T. But this seems to us like a very high risk gamble for Sprint to take.

BGR also claims they have word from an “incredibly solid source” that Sprint has landed an exclusive deal on the iPhone 5 with support for 4G WiMax out of the gate, with AT&T and Verizon only getting the device later next year.

I have been told that Sprint will be getting the iPhone 5 — yes the real iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S — as an exclusive. And it will be a WiMAX device. AT&T and Verizon would launch the iPhone 4S and get the iPhone 5 sometime in the first quarter of next year as an LTE device. Globally, the iPhone 5 might be available as a 4G HSPA+ device.

Wouldn’t it be far more likely, however, for Sprint to get a budget iPhone 4 and offer it at a far cheaper contract than AT&T or Verizon?

Tomorrow’s the day!

Well after months of waiting and rumors and speculation, tomorrow is finally the day we will find out about a new iPhone.

Will there be one phone or will there be two?  Will it be a slight upgrade to the iPhone 4, an iPhone 4S, or will it be a completely new phone, an iPhone 5, or maybe even both?  Will any new carriers be getting the iPhone?  How is Tim Cook going to do in his first solo gig as the new CEO?  All of our questions will be answered tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET!  Follow our onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/twitter.com/#!/iphonealley');" target="_blank" href="http://twitter.com/#!/iphonealley">Twitter for all the updates about the announcement!

Cook has a lot riding on this announcement.  He needs to reassure stockholders and Apple enthusiasts that the company is still going to remain strong and grow even though Steve Jobs is no longer the CEO.  If Cook does well, Apple will do well.

What update are you looking forward to most?  A bigger screen, 4G capabilities, higher megapixel camera, thinner body, voice recognition, more memory space?  Comment with what feature you’d like to see the most!

The other question for tomorrow’s announcement is when you will be able to download iOS 5.  I sure hope it’s tomorrow or at least in the next few days!  This could be the biggest software advancement since the ability to copy and paste!

Will there be a special surprise announcement at the very end?  In the past this is when the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.macbookinsurance.com');" target="_blank" title="MacBook" href="http://www.macbookinsurance.com">MacBook Air, FaceTime and iPod Touch are announced.  Think Apple has anything up it’s sleeve for the very end of the show?

All of our questions will be answered tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT/ 1 p.m. ET!

Enter @JailbreakCon

Enter @JailbreakCon

Hi guys I am Craig Fox and I am the founder of @JailbreakCon (formerly MyGreatFest) and I’ll be doing monthly column for TiPB to help keep the community informed about the planning of our next event, currently due to be in the USA summer 2012, California to be exact.

But before that let me start the posts off by telling you what has happened in the 11 months since its inception and how the first event ran.

Our first event gained some very influential speakers after the acquisition of Jay Freeman (Saurik), such as P0sixninja, Aaron Ash, Carsten Heinet (iFile), James Whelton (iPod nano hacker) and the iDroidproject.

I won’t bore you with all the silly stuff like booking tables and chairs etc, I will just say it’s taken a lot of planning and a lot of hard-work from our brilliant team of talented coders/designers/planners/promoters to bring it all together. It’s safe to say I could not have done this without the team behind me the whole way, they have been the biggest help — and until the day of the event we had not even met each other in real life! From start to finish we worked hard to make the event the best fun for all attending, and to make sure it was the best possible show for everyone in the community.

Onto the day of the event, it began with a very assured talk from Aaron Ash (his first public tech talk) and it got us off to a brilliant start. If there was one thing that stuck in my mind from Aaron’s talk, it’s that I wanted this event to focus on. When he spoke about Barrel’s downloads, and that only 1 in 70 were purchased, it made an impact on the problems of piracy faced by the Jailbreak community.

Next up was p0sixninja and iOPK. It was Joshua’s first ever public talk, and he did an extremely good job and gave the audience and press the advantage of some great posts after the event with the talk of 5 exploits in the Chronic-dev bag.

Just before the iDroidproject came on stage we did a massive giveaway — over £2500 worth. It was a rucksack full of goodies including an iPad 2 won by Charlie Ford (he left a very happy chap). We took everyone’s phone number at the event and then I asked John Freeman (Sauriks dad) to choose a number at random, and we then rang that number.

That was a great way to get everyone seated and all attention to the stage for the iDroidproject. Straight from the get go these guys (Team of 6 if I remember correctly) gave a great talk for and showed some stuff I never thought I would ever see on an iOS device.

We ran a lot of giveaways through the day, including a big games tournament that was run by our main sponsor Diabloskinz.com on Gran Turismo 5. We wanted to make sure the day wasn’t boring and a constant sit down affair, we wanted all our events to be a massive social event, fun and for all ages.

After the iDroidproject, up stepped Carsten Heineit (iFile developer). His talk was very in depth on the workings of iFile, and again the piracy issue facing all these developers, Carsten offered anyone at the event a license even if you had a cracked version on your iDevice. He finished his talk with a great quiz on the previous talk by giving away iFile t-shirts. (That night he also demonstrated the best dance moves that I have ever seen!)

Up next was James Whelton, a young Irish lad who burst onto the Jailbreaking scene with his hack on the iPod nano 6G. His talk was excellent and it shows the platform this community can give any young developer. From that one hack he has now set-up his own business and is doing coding dojos for kids all around his our native Ireland. We are definitely looking at holding these dojos at our events with James at the stern.

After a short break, we had the star of the show, Jay Freeman ( Saurik). What can I say about Jay that you don’t already know? He’s a genius, an extremely nice guy, and the most approachable guy at the whole event. He arrived the earliest of all the devs, waited outside and spoke with the queue for the whole time it was there. His talk was a very “Get to know me” oriented, and I think thats exactly what the community needed to do — to learn about the time and effort that goes into cydia and everything he does. He said something to someone attending the event that, “This was the event he was nervous about, as he actually cares a lot about the attendees” which is great for us (The community) .

Now we look forward to planning the next event which is set for California, summer 2012. We already have a lot of speakers in place, and are beginning the planning of the event. The team has jumped straight into the offline work and its all go. I urge all the readers of TiPB to follow @JailbreakCon to stay updated in the coming months. And be sure and check back here for team JailbreakCon’s column. We’ll keep you posted!

Thanks a lot guys.

16GB/32GB/64GB iPhone 4S Entries Show Up In Vodafone Germany

style="text-align: left;">This information comes from an iPhone 4 bumper case on the site, with the list above showing all the devices it’s compatible with.

style="text-align: left;">Alright folks, time to weigh in: are we going to get an iPhone 4S or an iPhone 5? Because if we get the iPhone 4S I’m sure plenty of people will be pretty disappointed, and Apple will have managed to pull of the world’s greatest con on the Chinese case manufacturers, convincing them of the other form factor.

Adobe Announces Six New Tablet Apps

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_9580.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23939" title="IMG_9580" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IMG_9580.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="319" />

Meet href="http://tv.adobe.com/show/adobe-touch-apps">Adobe Touch Apps, a suite of six new apps from the image-editing powerhouse, designed to work with tablets — which means the iPad, but not straight away. It’s an astonishing variety of apps, so here’s the rundown:

Analyst Eightball: iPhone 5 /iPhone 4S Sales To “Shatter” Single Day Records

We’re now just a hair’s breadth away from Apple’s announcement of the next iPhone — be it iPhone 4S or iPhone 5. In just a shade over 24 hours, Tim Cook will take the stage at the Apple Campus in Cupertino and announce something…and in no time at all, we’ll crash Apple’s servers in order to buy it. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White thinks that the demand here is so high that href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-5-event-analysis-2011-10">it’s going to be absolutely huge. With 18 months of buildup and excitement instead of the 12 of previous launches, he thinks “pent up demand” will shatter the 1.7 million sales record of previous iPhones.

Here’s his full statement:

We expect the iPhone 5 to get a makeover with a sleek, aluminum unibody enclosure that more closely resembles the MacBook Air than the iPhone 4, which will not only prove more aesthetically pleasing but also stronger, lighter and avoid the back-side “glass breaks” of last year. With this new enclosure, we believe this will provide Apple with the opportunity to expand the display size by at least one half of an inch to 4 inches and hopefully bigger. Apple will clearly need to upgrade the processor speed to at least a Dual Core 1.2GHz to match the Samsung Galaxy S II, while upgrading to a 8 mega pixel 1080p camera that is now also on the Galaxy S II.

Usually I don’t put much store in analyst claims, but I think this one’s a no-brainer. It’s going to be absolutely impossible to get one of these at launch.

iOS Hits Highest Marketshare Yet

id="na634532369589975856" src="" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no" width="600" height="580">

We’ve all heard the stories about Android gobbling up iOS’s marketshare like nobody’s business, but a href="http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=9&qpcustomb=1">new report from Netmarketshare paints a very different picture. What’s interesting is that this is both iPhone and iPad, covering all sorts of mobile data for cellphones and tablets. The tablet sphere is still one where the iPad is controlling far more marketshare than smartphones, so this doubtless helps bump the numbers a little.

From November 2010 to September of 2011, iOS moved up from 46.06% to 54.65%, Android climbed from 10.27% to 16.26% — that’s actually a bigger improvement for iOS than it is for Android. The big loser on this research is Java, with Symbian dropping notably and Blackberry slightly.

More Evidence of iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 Remains in Hiding

The iPhone 4S is popping up everywhere, but the iPhone 5 is still mostly M.I.A., only making a questionable appearance in onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/9to5mac.com/2011/10/01/radio-shack-inventory-system-shows-sprint-iphone-5-others/');" target="_blank" href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/01/radio-shack-inventory-system-shows-sprint-iphone-5-others/">Radio Shack’s inventory system on Friday. This weekend, the iPhone 4S made a few appearances, showing up inside href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/word-of-the-next-generation-iphones-cannot-be-contained">the latest iTunes beta, and href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/yup-another-leak-this-time-from-foxconn-images">leaked photos from Foxconn gave us a glimpse of new a device that closely resembled the CDMA iPhone 4.

On Monday, the 8GB iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S were spotted in the German carrier Vodafone’s inventory. Discovered by the wesbite onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.iphone-ticker.de/iphone-4s-vodafone-25468/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.iphone-ticker.de/iphone-4s-vodafone-25468/">iPhone-Ticker.de, Vodafone’s inventory only mentions the black and white iPhone 4S in 16/32/64GB models, and the 8GB iPhone 4, no iPhone 5.

Due to the lack of evidence, 9to5Mac believes Tim Cook will onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/9to5mac.com/2011/10/02/lets-talk-about-tuesday-iphones-ipods-and-more/');" target="_blank" href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/02/lets-talk-about-tuesday-iphones-ipods-and-more/">announce the iPhone 4S at Apple’s media event on Tuesday, not the rumored redesigned iPhone 5 fanboys have been dreaming of.

“Even though there is no concrete evidence for an iPhone redesign, many are still speculating (we call you ’5ers’!) and reporting that one is coming at this event. Because of  lack of evidence for a redesign, we believe that Apple will introduce only an iPhone 4S on Tuesday.”

The iPhone 5 did make an appearance at onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.iphonefaq.org/archives/971555');" target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/971555">Macworld Asia, when China Unicom’s Deputy Director Huang Wenlian said the new it would feature HSPA+ 21Mbps data speeds, but besides a few dodgy rumors, iPhone 5 sighting have been nonexistent.

Get Ready for the iPhone 4S, ‘S’ for Stopgap

I have no idea what Apple will announce tomorrow. I do know that it will be an updated iPhone, that will likely be available in the coming few weeks, just in time for the holiday shopping season. It’s becoming more and more likely that rumors of teardrop designed hardware, complete with a new larger display were off base and what we’ve been calling the iPhone 5 will not announced tomorrow. It might not be coming until 2012. It seems like tomorrow will bring the announcement that the iPhone 4S is coming and not the iPhone 5. This new iPhone will be the bridge from the current iPhone 4 to what will likely be a new design. 15 months after the iPhone 4 and Apple will be releasing the iPhone 4S, a stopgap device . Evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but will it be enough to continue Apple’s strong sales.

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iphone-4s-stopgap.jpg">class="alignnone size-full wp-image-23909" title="iphone-4s-stopgap" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iphone-4s-stopgap.jpg" alt="iPhone 4S stopgap" width="630" height="200" />/> id="more-23905">/> Sales of the iPhone 4 continue to be brisk. While the tech cycle continues to lust for new product designs, consumers are less concerned with product cycles. The iPhone has become an appliance. If the current iPhone 4 lined the shelves of Apple Stores this holiday season, they would continue to sell well. There isn’t a single phone that has seen any sort of critical sales that are anywhere near the iPhone 4. Consumers are content with buying the latest and greatest. If the iPhone 4S gets announced tomorrow, consumers that are interested in picking up an iPhone will purchase the iPhone 4S. Will the lack of an iPhone 5 push customers who want an iPhone to suddenly find themselves shopping a Galaxy II or Nexus Prime?

What about current iPhone owners? If you are like me, you purchased an iPhone 4 last July. Verizon customers who resisted the temptation to jump to AT&T bought their iPhone 4 in February. I’m not eligible for an upgrade and neither are any of the Verizon iPhone 4 owners. While I’d gladly pay for an evolutionary upgrade, not everyone has $500 to drop on an iPhone. When Apple dropped the iPhone 3GS, AT&T allowed early upgrades. This isn’t so easy with multiple US carriers and the inconsistent launch dates between AT&T and Verizon.

Releasing an iPhone 4S follows the pattern Apple has used in the past. iPhone 3G was succeeded by the iPhone 3GS. The smartphone market is more competitive than it was back then. Some would argue Apple might be slipping during a period where Android phone manufacturers are turning up the heat with the Nexus Prime among others. Are they off-base? The iPhone 4S would likely include a number of impressive upgrades internally and let’s not forget about iOS 5. These should be enough to still remain as a highly competitive device against the slew of Android phones. If the iPhone 4S gets slotted at $199, then it opens up an opportunity for the $99 iPhone 4. The duo of an upgraded iPhone 4S and value priced iPhone 4 is highly competitive.

Tomorrow could also see the addition of Sprint to the mix of US carriers offering the iPhone. As the 3rd largest wireless carrier, this brings a good number of potential iPhone customers. There are consumers who won’t switch carriers for a phone. Just like Verizon before them, Sprint will bring with them carrier loyal customers that have been waiting for an iPhone.

It’s easy to get caught up in the lust for a new iPhone. At the end of the day, the iPhone 4S will build upon a known commodity. The iPhone 4 is a kick ass phone. Best in class build quality, materials and software. There’s nothing wrong with taking a great phone and making it better. It might be a stopgap device, but the iPhone 4S will still be better than great and that’s not bad.

Vodafone Germany shows iPhone 4S in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavors

Vodafone Germany appears to have jumped the gun by listing various  new iPhone models as compatible with certain accessories, including iPhone 4 8GB models in Black and White as well as iPhone 4S Black and White models in 16GB, 32GB and even 64GB flavors.

Before we get too excited by the possibility of a 64GB iPhone 4S, it may be that Vodafone Germany is just making educated guesses based on the latest rumors. Having said that, listing possible devices on an accessory page does seem a bit pointless… unless you have some inside information. Not much longer to wait now, who wants that 64GB iPhone 4S?

‘Shadowgun’ App Review – A Bug-Plagued, Yet Awing, Adventure of Aesthetic Satisfaction

If you haven’t yet seen onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/shadowgun/id440141669?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shadowgun/id440141669?mt=8">Shadowgun, haven’t heard of it or didn’t have the curiousity to check it out in action on YouTube after seeing or hearing about it, then there’s something morbidly wrong with you. New from Madfinger Games, the game has already topped the charts thanks to its console-quality artwork that will be accompanied by your jaw literally dropping to the ground.

Before you go ahead and shell out $8 to purchase the game after entering a stage of hypnosis from seeing the App Store screenshots, there are some things you definitely need to consider. Read this whole review for all the details and out verdict. Is it down our alley or not (pun very much intended)?/> href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/shadowgun-app-review-a-bug-plagued-yet-awing-adventure-of-aesthetic-satisfaction/attachment/shadowgun2" rel="attachment wp-att-22191">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/shadowgun2-e1317580220193.jpg" alt="" title="shadowgun2" width="640" height="426" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22191" />/> The main character, whom you’ll take control of, is John Slade. Your job is to supposedly capture Dr. Simon, a crazy, evil doctor who conducts experiments on the planet’s alien natives as well as humans to create odd mutant creatures. These he refers to as his children/family. Umm…insane much? Although the story could have potential, it’s not tied into the gameplay much. Instead, you’ll just be running around blowing things and creatures up, apart from the occasional boss battles, which is fine by me as this is enjoyable in itself. Like other games of the same breed, you have an assistant that you’ll contact frequently. In this case, you have Sara, a robot. Although the dialog is slightly better than plain, the actual voice used for Sara is not; it seems as if Madfinger just obtained their sound clips from a text reader where you input text and receive an overly-computer-generated clip.

Shadowgun is an over-the-shoulder shooter which relies greatly on a well-developed cover system. Even though you’re on rails, and can’t really wonder “off path”, it takes some strategy to defeat the frequent squads of mutants will attack. By simply hovering near an object, Slade will crouch behind; this allows you to see the rest of the screen, pinpoint your target and briefly pop up to shoot. This said, the controls are easy and executed nicely. Similar to other third person shooters for iOS, you’ll control movement by dragging on the left half of the screen and will shoot/control your view with the right half. You can also reload and change weapons from the latter side. Having an iPod Touch 4th generation, I was able to enjoy the artwork, but not the controls so much – it took some getting used to and seemed a bit cramped on the iPod’s small screen. I’m really envious of those of you who own iPads…

There are multiple locations where some of your mind power is required to pass on. Some areas will have you “hacking” computers, which is alike Simon Says; the computer that you’re hacking will display a path which you must reproduce correctly. These aren’t too difficult which leads the gameplay to become kind of a repetitive mash of button-smashing in attempt to shoot at enemies./> href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/shadowgun-app-review-a-bug-plagued-yet-awing-adventure-of-aesthetic-satisfaction/attachment/shadowgun3-2" rel="attachment wp-att-22193">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/shadowgun31-e1317580249716.jpg" alt="" title="shadowgun3" width="640" height="426" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22193" />/> It’s true that Shadowgun holds multiple hours of gameplay. I’ve only completed the first three levels and have spent over 4 hours playing. This is partly because of the amount of bugs and crashes that I’ve experiences. Every time I open the application and hit ‘resume game’ from the menu, which is very user friendly by the way, the game crashes without fail and I have to hard-reset my iPod for it to let me play. Additionally, each time I die, the game crashes – only some of the time would the game recognize where I died/my last checkpoint. More than 1/2 of the time, if the game crashed, I’d have to start a level all over. It’s a bit disheartening each time it happens.

Contrary to press coverage, Shadowgun takes only some cues from the Gears of War series rather than completely, blatantly ripoff everything – sadly, it’s not as big of a copy as I would’ve liked to see (humor), but even so, it’s got unique elements that make the repetitiveness a bit more tolerable and an experience in itself.

I would be crazy to leave a mention of the artwork out of this review so here we go: the artists at Madfinger are absolutely fantastic and are evidently professionals at what they do. Other than Infinity Blade, there’s no other game that boasts such high quality graphics. All of the character sprites are effectively rendered to give off a dark mood, and the vast environments have enough vivid colors and details to whet any type of gamer’s appetite. I had no idea that Unity, the engine used to develop Shadowgun, had so much power. Games like this prove that the App Store still has tons of potential and a long, long way to go yet.

If you think $8 is too much, though it’s definitely a relatively hefty price point, then wait until you see your power bill at the end of the month. You may want to consider stocking up on a few external batteries, as the app will straight out drain your battery. Finding those shouldn’t be too difficult. We have a few reviews of them, and a simple Google search for “iPhone external batteries” will easy return with thousands of hits.

I’m completely satisfied with what I’ve seen so far in the first couple hours of gameplay, despite the few gripes that I’ve mentioned. Games like this, and others such as Infinity Blade, really showcase the power of the iOS devices, the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad 2 in particular. When iOS 5 comes out, I really want to buy myself an iPad 2 along with an Apple TV, so I can kick back on the couch and simply enjoy the gorgeous artwork that Shadowgun so uniquely boasts. So even though it’s not the best in terms of gameplay and veriety, it’s worth $8 solely based on the reaction you’ll get out of the graphices – so yes, it is down our alley.

Apple puts up the banners for the Let’s Talk iPhone event

Apple has begun its preparations for its upcoming “Let’s Talk iPhone” event on Tuesday October 4th. The banners reflect the invitation that was sent out last week. It shows the four iOS icons which are Calendar, Clock, Maps and Phone.

We are still unsure what exactly Apple will reveal at the event, most now believe it will be the iPhone 4S rather than an iPhone 5. I am still holding out for a completely new design for the iPhone 5 although that now looks highly unlikely.
