Meon, a puzzle game for the iPhone

Meon, by Manbolo, is an iPhone puzzle game where the goal is to direct beams of light into the Meons with the help of tools such as prisms and splitters.

Even though I personally find the music in this game to be a little annoying, I really do enjoy playing it. Meon is challenging, fun, and addicting.

Details and screenshots after the break.

In 1997, Professor Tagishaki, from Tokyo Quantum Mechanics institute, found new elementary particles that he called Meons. In this puzzle game, you must solve more than 120 levels to free Meons. Use Prism, Splitter and other various tools to light all the Meons and solve the Light Quest!

Meon is available on the iPhone for free.

Non-iPad tablet sales put into perspective

Non-iPad tablet sales put into perspective

Marco Arment decided to compare the sale of non-iPad tablets (excluding the TouchPad, as no numbers are available) with those of obscure gaming devices past. The result is the graph above. Note:

I didn’t include the iPad’s approximately 30 million units on here because it distorted the graph’s scale too much.

The Last Rocket App Review

This new application from indie developer, Shaun Inman has literally been my guilty pleasure for the better of the past few days. Day in and day out, I’ve been playing non-stop. Why? Puzzle, platforming and retro elements come together flawlessly in onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-last-rocket/id429747672?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-last-rocket/id429747672?mt=8">The Last Rocket.

The Last Rocket isn’t your traditional “run and jump” platformer but instead a platformer that has you navigating through a total of 64, one-room levels. The gameplay will follow a storyline in that a space ship is propelling towards a star or some of the sort and has lost its gears. Your job is to get through all of the many obstacles in each level while also attempting to collect all of the gears in each level. A better description of the game would most likely be a puzzle platformer-esque game. A bit difficult to explain the gameplay, so check out this video to see exactly how the game plays:

width="640" height="510" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xSJPkrmfKrM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

A unique control scheme has been dreampt up for the game, which actually works surprisingly well. Rather than a d-pad to control movement, you’ll tap the screen to blast off of a wall, can swipe your finger left or right to walk when stuck to a wall and perform other gestures to make “the last rocket” move in different ways. It all comes together perfectly and takes only but a few minutes to get the hang of:

width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AiulpaFtlmA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

There wouldn’t be much of a replay value for the game by itself, considering completing every single one of the levels only takes a few hours, but the developer has also coded in a few secret passageways in many levels where there are hidden gears. Since the game allows you to advance through levels without it being mandatory to have collected all of the gears, you may want to play through the game’s levels multiple times to attempt and grab more gears each time.

Personally, I think the game would be a whole lot more enjoyable if there was a level select screen. Currently, the developer has clearly worked around providing such a thing, but if you miss a gear in a level and move on accidentally, there’s nothing you can do but go back. Thankfully, though, he has provided a way of seeing how many gears you have collected once you complete the game via an HUD that will appear accordingly. At-least give us the aforementioned level select and indication after the levels are played through once.

The artwork is absolutely fantastic. If you fancy retro artwork, look no further as the Last Rocket features the best of the best of pixel artwork. Additionally, contributing to the retro theme and feel of the game are the multiple chiptunes that come included with the game.

Don’t ask me why I pressed the Restart button, but I did, and I learned the hard way that there’s no popup dialog message that asks me to confirm the restart. Just a note to the developer: would really help if you could add something like that.

Though it’s relatively short, the inclusion of secret passages, a great story that guides you and always corresponds to the gameplay and some wonderful retro visuals equate to an overall worthy experience. It’s a bit steep at $2.99, but the amount of time and character it took to develop the game is evident throughout making it an easy purchase to make. I especially was mesmorized by the fact that the game is meant to be a puzzle platformer, but didn’t have too many difficult puzzles; it’s the perfect solutions for gamers seeking an awesome platformer without puzzles that are too hard.

I don’t usually do this, but to highlight why exactly you should buy the game, I will this one time:/> Gameplay: 5/> Music: 5/> Artwork: 5/> UI: 3/> Replayability: 5/> Controls: 5/> Content: 5

New iPhone on October 7, no new iPad until spring 2012

Apple’s next generation iPhone, be it an iterative “iPhone 4S” or a completely revamped “iPhone 5” could go on sale October 7 in the US. That’s a Friday, which isn’t uncommon for iPhone launches. Originally it sounded more like a second week of October launch, more like October 14, but now it sounds like the first week. We’re still hearing that an “iPhone 4S”-style device, with improved processors and optics, is more likely than an all new design, but given the many and varied rumors, it’s impossible to tell for sure. It could even be that the “iPhone 4S” is the budget iPhone Apple supposedly completed work on just before WWDC 2011 (the iPhone nano, so to speak), and the “iPhone 5″ is the new high-end model. That could explain the supposedly conflicting rumors.

iPad 3, which Apple may have flirted with releasing this fall as well, sounds like it might have been put back on it’s traditional Spring schedule. Whether or not the component costs and yield rates of the rumored 2048×1536 Retina Display simply aren’t where Apple needs them to be yet are unknown.

Still, Apple can and will change their plans up to event day, so take all of this with a Cupertino-sized grain of salt. (And feel free to attribute any combination of “people” “sources” “familiar with” “knowledge of” and “little birdies” makes you happy.)

Rumor mill roundup: iPhone 4S and iPad 3 In October, A6 In Testing

Ladies and gentlemen, the musings of the rumor mill. Allow yourself huge, mountainous piles of salt before accepting.

Example in the first: Macotakara, which has a decent track record, is claiming that October href="http://www.macotakara.jp/blog/index.php?ID=13754">will see the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 released. According to their sources, the new iPhone is based on the iPhone 4, and it and a new iPad will be manufactured in early September for an early October release — they also claim no information on the iPhone 5.

Example in the second: href="http://cens.com/cens/html/en/news/news_inner_37282.html">Taiwan Economic Times claims that the A6 chip is already being tested, with plans to enter production in Q1 2012, and release it in Q2.

The A6 thing? I can totally believe that, the timing makes sense for a new chip for whatever next year’s iPad is.

But the iPhone 4S and iPad 3? I don’t know. I don’t think we’ll see them, but if we do, they’ll be variant models. I think if there is an iPhone 4S, it will be released alongside a more powerful and redesigned iPhone 5. Conversely, if there is an iPad released this Autumn, it’ll be an “iPad Pro” or something similar, as opposed to completely replacing the current generation.

Apple to hold annual fall event on September 7? [Updated]

Apple Special Music Event 2010

Kodawarisan is reporting that Apple will hold it’s annual fall event — traditionally the Special Music Event that focuses on iTunes and iPod — on September 7, 2011. That’s a Wednesday and broadly consistent with Apple having held their annual fall event during the first week of September for the last few years now.

Typically Apple has introduced new versions of iPod touch at the event, along with the rest of the iPod family, and last year introduced the new, iOS-powered Apple TV 2 as well. This year, of course, where WWDC 2011 came and went with nary a new iPhone in sight, we’re all waiting to see if Apple uses the fall event to launch iPhone 5, or to at least show it off before an October release.

Apple being Apple, however, we likely won’t get official confirmation until invitations for the annual fall event get sent out only a few days before hand, and we won’t know if a new iPhone will be announced until Steve Jobs holds it up on stage.

Either way, with up to 5 new iOS devices in the pipeline, it could be an exciting event to say the least.

Until then we’ll keep casting the augurs and looking for signs.

UPDATED: Jim Dalrymple, whose sources are usually excellent, says there’s nothing to see here. No Apple event on September 7. (Though we presume there will be an Apple fall event at some point still, just not that point.) [The Loop]

His Adventure for iPhone now available

Pezzini Games has released their new iPhone game, His Adventure. In this game, tt is your job to guide “him” through the hand-drawn worlds by controlling the little platform – he is constantly walking and needs your help.

This game looks like a lot of fun! Platform games are one of my favorite genres of games, and His Adventure is like a platformer – with a twist! I can easily see myself getting sucked into this little world for hours at a time.

Details, screenshots, and video after the break.

[App Store link] [lite version - App Store link]

His Adventure combines beautiful hand drawn art with accurate and precise touch controls. Control the platform by simply moving your finger on the screen. Your task is not that simple, be sure he avoids the moving saws and obstacles whilst collecting as many stars as possible. You’re going to have you use your precision to get them all- be quick, some of these stars don’t hang round forever!

His Adventure is available on the iPhone for $0.99.

Dalrymple: No iPhone 5 On September 7

Yesterday we reported on a rumor that Apple href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/iphone-5-announcement-to-happen-sept-7/2011/08/12/">would announce the iPhone 5 at an event on the 7th of September. Now Jim Dalrymple, arguably one of the best informed (and connected) Apple commenters href="http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/08/12/apple-will-not-hold-iphone-5-on-sept-7/">has shot this rumor down on no uncertain terms:

Reports began to surface yesterday that Apple would hold a special event on September 7 to launch the new iPhone, but that’s not happening.

According to my sources, Apple will not have an event or launch the next iPhone on September 7. It’s hard to say how that specific date was chosen by the sites that started the rumor, other than it fits into the timeline of previous Apple events.

Dalrymple’s sources are immaculate. Between him and Gruber, if they suggest something it’s probably happening, and if they flat our state it, you better believe it’s true.

What’s interesting here is that he only denied that one specific date, which means we may see an event somewhere around that time, just not on the 7th specifically.

The iPhone: One of the Only Smartphones to Maintain a Spot in a List of Top 20

Here’s something that will blow you’re mind – that is if you’re not a full Apple enthusiast, considering those mentioned people have probably been expecting it and will be the least surprised to hear that the iPhone is one of two smartphones to remain in the list of top 20 smartphones since 2009.id="more-21609">

Yup, there’s no typo there, nor am I reporting the wrong results. Millenial Media releases a top 20 list annually, this year proving the iPhone’s dominance; since the 2009 list, till now, the 2011 list, the iPhone has been the number one smartphone out of the total 20. That’s means that the iPhone 3GS and the current iPhone 4, the two iPhone models that have been released/sold since 2009, have both been the leading smartphones of their time. Stunning given that 18 of the other phones (RIM’s BlackBerryCurve has been on the list both 2009 and this year, taking number 3 and number 2, respectively) have not been been able to stay on the list more than one year.

While Apple is releasing only one smartphone per year, other companies have been releasing a myriad of them, of which none have stayed on the list for over two years. Check out 2009′s list (left) and this year’s list (right):/> href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/the-iphone-one-of-the-only-smartphones-to-maintain-a-spot-in-a-list-of-top-20/attachment/50-most" rel="attachment wp-att-21610">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/50-most-e1313168233135.png" alt="" title="list of 20" width="640" height="322" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-21610" />

So, let’s recap: the iPhone is still at number one, has been for the past three years and most likely will remain at the top of the list for years to come, while the rest of the list (excluding RIM’s BlackBerryCurve, for now anyways) has been refreshed annually. Apple has surely got some future fame carved out for themselves. Repetitive on my part, yes, but still, a worthy accomplishment for the iPhone and their creator, Apple.

Meet iTableous, a white iPhone 4 inspired table with a raft of features [video]

Meet iTableous, a white iPhone 4 inspired table with a raft of features

iTableous is a PC and HDTV hidden away inside a giant white iPhone 4 case. Sounds simple, until you take a look at the work that has been put into making this table. It has been crafted out of the finest materials and painstakingly perfected over the last few months. The table belongs to its creator Benjamin Bachmeier.

The iTableous is not just a table of course, it has a Full HD TV with DVB-T freeview reception, integrated DVD player, dual boots Windows 7 and OS X, HD Camera, microphone and an iPhone dock connection. Unfortunately there is no touch screen, it has to be operated via a mouse and keyboard.

The whole project just floats my boat; I would really love something like this in my family room. It is so unique and well made! Take a look for yourself, there is a video after the break!

Daily Tip: How to remove your non-Facebook using friends’ contact information from Facebook

Daily Tip: How to remove your friends' contact information from Facebook

If you’ve synced your contacts with Facebook for iPhone, it’s possible that all the information from your iPhone Contacts.app are now copied over to Facebook’s servers. While that means you get Facebook profile pics when your Facebook using friends call you, it also may mean Facebook now has the personal numbers of your non-Facebook using friends, and that may not be okay with them, or with you. Luckily there’s a way to take back what’s yours (and theirs). Instructions after the break.

[BGR]

I don’t buy the shock and disgust part — at some point you hit the sync button, after all — but it is disturbing how quickly and opaquely big online companies can suck in other people’s personal info. And if you know any other cases of Facebook, or any social network, holding information you’d rather they not hold, let us know and tell us how to remove it!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

iPhone 5 Announcement To Happen Sept 7?

The widely held view is that Apple will have their iPhone 5 announcement at their annual Autumnal iPod Music event. Over the last few years, this shindig has taken place on on September 1st, 2010, September 9th, 2009, and September 9th, 2008, and generally heralds the introduction of new iPod models. With no new iPhone landing this Summer, all hopes are pinned on the iPhone 5 being announced at this event.

A Japanese site claims to have a date: Wednesday, September 7. This comes href="http://www.kodawarisan.com/k2011_02/archives/2011/08/aa_ipod_aaaaea9_1.html">from the website Kodariwasen, who are pegging the event to happen on September 8 Japan time, which is September 7 in the USA. href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/12/apple-to-hold-media-event-on-september-8th-2011/">MacRumors believes that this comes from a trusted source, saying, “we confirmed with Kodawarisan that the date was not the product of guesswork, but came from a source in the know.”

Kodariwasen believes that the iPhone 5 will then be released in late September or Early October.

WTF: iPad Cases Made From Bernie Madoff’s Pants

Did you miss out on getting ripped off by Bernie Madoff? Well, here’s one more chance. Case maker href="http://www.frederickjames.com/collections/the-bernie-madoff">Frederick James picked up some of Madoff’s trousers at an auction selling off his worldly possessions in order to help pay back his victims, and James has converted them into iPad cases.

That’s right, iPad cases made from Madoff’s pants. With a certificate of authenticity if you want one.

The Bernie Madoff Collection/> In the Fall of 2010, Frederick James obtained a limited number of personal clothing items belonging to the notorious felon, Bernie Madoff, at an auction held by the US Marshals Service.

Madoff is an incarcerated American felon, former stockbroker, investment advisor, non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market, and the admitted operator of what has been described as the largest Ponzi scheme in history.

Frederick James has used the Madoff clothing to create limited edition iPad covers. Each item of clothing has been cut up to create a unique cover.

So, what’ll it set you back to have the ass-sweat of a famous scam artist all over your iPad? Oh, just $250-$350. Pocket change, really.

Two New Odd and Expensive Apple Accessories

iTableous isn’t the first iPhone table, and its not even the best, lacking the touchscreen capabilities of the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCbSwOgNzZg&feature=player_embedded#at=39');" target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCbSwOgNzZg&feature=player_embedded#at=39">Table Connect, but it’s still interesting. iTableous is basically a giant white iPhone that is navigated using a wireless keyboard and mouse. It features GB of DDR2 RAM, 500GB of internal storage, a 5.7 megapixel camera, 720p video recording, as well USB and HDMI. It can also run Mac OSX 10.6.7, with a little tweaking, and Windows 7 Professional. The 30-pin connector allows you to hook up your real iPhone to the table.

I’m not sure if I would want a giant white iPhone table sitting in the middle of my home, but I guess it could make a nice addition to someone’s man cave. Perhaps a nice companion piece to your foosball table?

An even weirder Apple accessory is a bunch of fashionable onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad covers made out of Bernie Madoff’s wardrobe. Yep, the pants that once covered the mastermind behind the largest Ponzi scheme in American history, can now cover your iPad!

31 covers have been created so far, and two are currently available for purchase on the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.frederickjames.com/collections/the-bernie-madoff');" target="_blank" href="http://www.frederickjames.com/collections/the-bernie-madoff">Fredrick James website for $350.

The iPad covers fashioned from Bernie’s Ralph Lauren Polo and off-white khakis pants won’t offer much protection, but they will be a conversation starter. I hope this doesn’t start a new trend of famous criminal Apple accessories.

Creator John Vaccaro told the New York Post, “people want these because he’s somebody who did something bad.” The entrepreneur expects to get 64 iPad covers from Bernie’s pants alone.

Disney World in Orlando is currently expanding into “Fantasyland”, and href="http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2011/08/imagineers-use-innovative-technology-to-build-new-fantasyland/">the Imagineers are using iPads to help plan and execute the construction. They’re using it to put together plans, conference, spot problems in the field, and just about anything else you can imagine.

It sounds like they use href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/webex-for-ipad/id364031971">WebEx for their meetings, which allows them to instantly contact people, pull them all into a meeting, and share footage from the camera — so you can show how things are going, live, from the field.

Given that Pixar is a part of Disney and Steve Jobs is still a honcho at Pixar, I’m surprised there isn’t even more iOS integration with the Magic Kingdom!

22 More Fake Apple Stores Found In China

class="alignnone" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_6533.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="480" />

Remember the href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/check-out-this-incredible-fake-apple-store-from-china/2011/07/20/">fake Apple stores that were spotted in China last month, which have href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/fake-chinese-apple-stores-shut-down/2011/07/25/">since been shut down? It looks like they’re part of a trend. Chinese authorities in the city of Kunming have href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/11/us-apple-china-fake-idUSTRE77A3U820110811">spotted another 22 fake Apple stores, and is making moves to shut them down. The stores have been ordered to stop using the Apple logo after complaints by Apple China, as Chinese law protects against using the “look and feel” of other companies’ stores.

It’s not known if most of these stores sold actual Apple products or cheap rip-offs.

China’s Administration for Industry and Commerce in Kunming has said it will set up a complain hotline, and will monitor stores more closely.

This is just one city that has gained international attention. Who wants to bet that there are a huge number of these stores in every large Chinese cities?

Chinese authorities discover another 22 fake Apple stores in Kunming

Chinese authorities discover a further 22 fake Apple stores in Kunming

After the discovery of a fake Apple Store in the Chinese city of Kunming last month, Chinese authorities have now discovered that there are a total of 22 unauthorized Apple retailers operating in the same area.

China’s Administration for Industry and Commerce in the Yunnan provincial capital said the stores have been ordered to stop using Apple’s logo after Apple China accused them of unfair competition and violating its registered trademark, state media said on Thursday.

It is thought that the products being sold in the fake Apple Stores are in fact genuine Apple products; rather than fake products. What is more likely is that the Apple products are purchased outside of China and smuggled into the country. We saw an example of how this was being done earlier in the week. This would allow the resellers to avoid paying any taxes.
