Daily Tip: How to disable keyboard clicks when inputting text

If the clicking sound you hear when entering text on your iPhone iPad or iPod touch annoys you or in my case others around you, then there is an easy solution. Instead of turning the sound down or muting it completely, you can just disable the keyboard clicks.

  • Start off by selecting Settings

  • Then open up Sounds

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page

  • Flick the toggle switch for Keyboard Clicks to Off

That is all there is to it. You can now type away to your hearts content without annoying yourself or those around you!

Windows 8 tablets won’t support Adobe Flash either?

Windows 8 tablets won't support Adobe Flash either?

Like Apple with iOS for iPhone and iPad, Microsoft appears to have no intention of supporting Adobe Flash or other web plugins in the upcoming IE 10 for Metro in Windows 8 tablets.

Running Metro style IE plug-in free improves battery life as well as security, reliability, and privacy for consumers. Plug-ins were important early on in the web’s history. But the web has come a long way since then with HTML5. Providing compatibility with legacy plug-in technologies would detract from, rather than improve, the consumer experience of browsing in the Metro style UI.

Will there be the same level of outrage-mongering by then, or will it have become as accepted as RealMedia-free video, ActiveX-free websites, and floppy-less PCs?

App Giveaway: YouMail for iPhone subscription

YouMail is a alternative to the iPhone’s built-in visual voicemail. It lets you listen to your voicemail on any device, computer, or email account. It also has a much a more sophisticated caller ID that includes the caller’s name and location.

The above mentioned features are available for free, but for a monthly fee, you can have your voicemails transcribed into text so that you can read them instead of listen to them. This transcription is human-powered, so it is extremely accurate.

If you were to ask me what I use my iPhone for, I’d spatter off at least ten different things I regularly do, but “to make calls” would not be on the list. Needless to say, I hate voicemail and would much rather someone text me than leave me a voicemail. In fact, I rarely actually listen my voicemail and instead just shoot the person a text asking what’s up.

I need a YouMail subscription.

YouMail is more powerful and more fun than your iPhone visual voicemail.

The good folks at YouMail have given us three subscriptions for a year of YouMail’s basic service (a $100 value!) to giveaway to our awesome readers! For a chance to win, let us know about how many voicemails you get per day (or week) that you’d rather read than listen to.

YouMail is available on the iPhone for free.

Two Interesting iPhone Products: Car Remote Control and iPhone Security Alarm

We’ve all seen iPhone accessories that turn your iPhone into a remote control, but the Park4U iPhone app turns your device into a remote for your car, not your entertainment center. The Automatic Park4U system allows your vehicle to park on its own by using sensors to guide itself into spaces with 22 inches of clearance. As demonstrated in this onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeRUkNRyycA&feature=player_embedded');" target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeRUkNRyycA&feature=player_embedded">video by a Valeo representative, the iPhone app allows you to control your car without being inside it. I’m not sure why this would be useful, but it’s pretty amazing. The Park4U technology is already utilized by Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, and Lincoln, but there is no info on when the app will be available.

A more useful accessory is Kensington’s new BungeeAir iPhone alarm. The 3-in-1 iPhone case is perfect for forgetful people, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.iphonefaq.org/archives/971519');" target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/971519">like Apple employees, who keep leaving their phones in bars or coffee shops.

You just slip your iPhone into the case, attach the wireless security tether to your keys, and the BungeeAir beeps when you get a certain distance away from your phone. If you still manage to separate yourself from your iPhone, the case automatically invokes its passcode security after you get a certain amount of distance away. You can recover your phone by hitting the “find” button, setting off another alarm that helps you locate the device.

The lithium polymer battery case also adds 4 hours of talk time to your iPhone. The Kensington BungeeAir Wireless Security Tether is for the iPhone 4 and retails for around $100.

Google Places iPhone app gets an upgrade

In the recent past, Google has been aggressively upgrading with web services and applications to broaden the appeal to mobile users. Its focus has shifted considerably from its traditional services such as Gmail to more user-focused services. One application that has received a lot of attention is Google Places, which acts as a pocket guide for consumers based on general recommendations. In a bid to enhance this service, it recently bought Zagat, which combines local business information (address, contact information, reviews, and hours of operations) and integrates it to Google Maps.

However, Google is also making a strong effort to market more of its services and applications to mobile users. Apple and Android put together form almost 70% of the total market share for smartphones and they are popular platform for potential users of Google Places. Hence, it is exciting to note that Google has updated the Places app for the iPhone to 1.2.1. The new upgrade allows users to filter their search results based on distance, rating and price. In addition, they can also see the operating hours and read any relevant reviews of the dining places.

Analysts are keen to point out that this is not just a simple upgrade but highlights the evolutions of Places in the context of the Google eco-system.  You can expect Google to integrate the system with Google offers to provide users with local deals from major US cities. Moreover, you can expect more options to filter the search results even based on the minutest details. Some even expect the service to be integrated with Google+, the company’s wildly popular social networking site that is currently competing with Facebook. If this is done, Google+ users will be able to share and recommend places to each other. Rest assured, Google Places is going is going to become part of something bigger.

Adobe bring Flash to the iPhone and iPad

Adobe announced that it has finally managed to provide Flash video to Apple’s iOS devices including the iPhone and iPad. According to Adobe, it is not possible for content providers to use Flash to provide video streams on multiple platforms including Android, OS X and Windows through Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5.

Now keep in mind that this does not mean that iOS devices will support Flash. Thus, you are not going to see an overnight shift in Apple’s policies and you still won’t be able to play Flash based games or interactive material. Keep in mind that Apple decided long ago to avoid Flash due to a variety of stability and performance related issues. Steve Jobs himself has explicitly made it clear that Apple wants a viable alternative to Flash. Hence, the amount of energy Apple and other major players have devoted towards HTTP Live Streaming.  This technology standard powers sites like YouTube.

The Flash Media Server 4.5 is designed to add in support for HTTP Live Streaming. This way, content providers can use the program to provide users with video streams in any form they require. For instance, if a computer or other electronic device already has Flash installed, the content will be displayed through a Flash format. However, if the video stream must be delivered to a device that does not have Flash installed (e.g.: iOS X) then it will be provided via HTTP Live Streaming.

This is an important development for Adobe since it seems to have rescued Flash from the grip of obsoleteness. Not long ago, many analysts were ready to write-off Flash as major tech firms shunned it. This also goes to show how important iOS users are now in terms of determining technology standards. Adobe’s move is going to make things easier for both designers and users.

Alleged iPhone 5 Screen Protector Shows Large Screen, Wide Home Button

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/unwire-002-500x333.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23653" title="unwire-002-500x333" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/unwire-002-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" />

Another day, another part leak for an unreleased iPhone. This time it’s what appears to be an iPhone 5 screen protector, href="http://unwire.hk/2011/09/15/rumors-iphone-5-screen-protector-revealed/apple/">as noticed by unwire.hk. As you can see pretty clearly in the image above and the one after the jump, the screen protector has a much larger home button, which has been elongated into a lozenge shape. The screen is also significantly , when compared to the iPhone 4.

id="more-23651">

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/unwire-003-500x333.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23652" title="unwire-003-500x333" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/unwire-003-500x333.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="333" />

It appears that the hole at the top of the protector is for both the speaker and the front-facing camera in one opening.

Right, so we’ll consider this a tick in the “completely redesigned iPhone 5″ column.

Belkin intros a trio of iPad kitchen accessories

The iPad makes an awesome recipe book for use in the kitchen but where you put it whilst you’re cooking is always a problem.  Belkin thinks its solved the problem with the introduction of three new iPad kitchen accessories.

The first accessory is the Chef Stand and Stylus; this is a washable stand with various viewing angles. It also comes with a wand or stylus which has an easy grip handle and a magnetic tip. It has been designed for you to carry on using your iPad even though your hands could be covered in food.

The second accessory is the Kitchen Cabinet Mount; this has an easy to use clamp and does not require any drilling of permanent installation. It secures your iPad at eye level allowing you to carry on cooking free in the knowledge that your iPad is safe and secure.

The final accessory is the Fridge Mount. It is basically a mount that secures to your refrigerator door via 3M CommandStrips. The iPad 2 can then be snapped into it and is held in place with magnets.

The accessories are designed for the iPad 2 with the exception of the Cabinet Mount. This is a universal type holder suitable for tablets between 7″ and 10″. The cost will be $39.99 for the Chef Stand, $49.99 for the Kitchen Cabinet Mount and $39.99 for the fridge mount.

Taito To Make iNVADERCADE iPad Cabinet

style="height: 390px; width: 640px;" width="640" height="390" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0">name="allowFullScreen" value="true" />name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" />name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kr-iEWwcxNs?version=3" />name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />style="height: 390px; width: 640px;" width="640" height="390" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kr-iEWwcxNs?version=3" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" />/> First ThinkGeek made the href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/?s=icade">iCade, then came the href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/atari-teases-atari-arcade-controller-for-ipad/2011/09/06/">Atari Arcade Controller, and now we’re hearing that Taito will be joining the fray with the href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2011/09/taito_jumps_on_the_icade_bandw.php">iNVADERCADE. Taito is the company best known for birthing the Space Invaders series, one of the most historically important video gaming franchises. The iNVADERCADE appears to go back to the series’ roots, as it only has a joystick and a single button — making it all but useless for any games that aren’t the original Space Invaders.

How about price? Well, it looks like it’ll go for ¥15,800, close to $205, when it debuts on October 11. That’s right, more than $200 for an arcade cabinet that’ll only function with a handful of games at best. On the plus side, it has built in speakers and functions as a charger.

At least the panelling is awesome, right?

Case-Mate shows off iPhone 5 cases, pulls the page shortly after

iPhone 5 casemate

Case-Mate published a page today featuring iPhone 5 case designs and pulled it just shortly after. If the case designs are the real deal we may be seeing an overhauled design for the iPhone 5 after all.

Case-Mate recently claimed to have inside info regarding the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S. (Which we are still a bit skeptical about.) As we get closer to an announcement we typically see a lot of case leaks but they don’t typically come from a manufacturer as reputable as Case-Mate.

I’m personally hoping these cases are legit as the iPhone inside the case appears to be a drastic change in design and form factor. It appears to be similar to the iPad 2. Real, fake, or really fake?

iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak In The Works

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Screen-Shot-2011-09-15-at-8.43.07-AM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23658" title="Screen Shot 2011-09-15 at 8.43.07 AM" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Screen-Shot-2011-09-15-at-8.43.07-AM.jpg" alt="" width="551" height="188" />

We haven’t heard much from the jailbreaking Dev-Team of late, as they’re assumedly keeping their heads down figuring out exploits to unleash when iOS 5 comes to light. One of the Chronic Dev Team’s members recently popped up on Twitter, and confirmed that while they are alive and href="http://twitter.com/#!/pod2g/status/113510392298356736">working on iOS 5, they’re not saying anything right now as it would href="http://twitter.com/#!/pod2g/status/113909385595592704">give Apple time to patch the vulnerabilities. And yes, they’re href="http://twitter.com/#!/pod2g/status/113958333693693952">working on an href="http://twitter.com/#!/pod2g/status/113958333693693952">iOS 5 href="http://twitter.com/#!/pod2g/status/113958333693693952">untethered jailbreak.

Which means that just like every other time Apple has released an iOS update, you can expect a jailbreak version to be available within days of the announcement, if not as soon as it hits the streets.

Case-Mate claims iPhone 5 will be a complete redesign, iPhone 4S also coming

CaseMate iPhone 5

Case-Mate has put up a page on their website making a lot of claims regarding the iPhone 5 and further rumored iPhone 4S. Case-Mate believes the iPhone 5 will be a complete redesign and not just another incarnation of the current iPhone 4. They claim it will feature a wider and thinner design, wireless charging, and an upgraded camera.

Given iOS 5 should only be a few weeks away I would think we would hear something officially any day now. In the mean time here’s what Case-Mate thinks we are going to see concerning the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, which is supposedly just an updated model with a similar form factor to the already existing iPhone 4. They believe both versions will be launched, not just one.

The new iPhone 5 will feature a completely different form factor than its predecessor. Wider and thinner, the redesigned device features an extended home button. The screen size could see an increase to 4 inches.

Also included in the iPhone 5 will be an A5 dual-core processor, similar to the one used in the iPad 2. It will also be equipped with an 8 mega-pixel camera, wireless charging and iOS 5, which features iCloud portable storage capabilities…

The debate continues on whether the new iPhone will be an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S. From our inside resources, it appears that Apple will be indeed launching both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S in early October. The iPhone 4S will feature the same form factor as the iPhone 4 but will be upgraded with the latest technology, including the A5 dual-core processor and 8 mega-pixel camera.

Case-Mate goes on and says that the iPhone 5 will be available in 16 and 32 GB offerings. I’m not quite sure I am confident Apple will release two different versions of the iPhone or continue with their normal tradition of lowering the price of the previous model and using it in place of an entry level model.

The new page also allows you to sign up for updates regarding iPhone 5 and 4S accessories. That seems a bit sketchy to me. Releasing more rumors seems like an awfully good way to get people to sign up for news about your accessories and future products. We would take this insider info with an enormous grain of salt.

Case-Mate Accidentally Leaks iPhone 5 Product Line [u]

So far, all the case leaks we’ve seen for the iPhone 5 have come from sketchy little Chinese manufacturers, so we can’t be sure of how accurate they are. Now, href="http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/15/iphone-5-to-have-radical-new-design-according-to-case-mate-images">BGR has spotted that one of our favorite case makers — href="http://www.case-mate.com/">Case-Mate — has accidentally put up some of their cases for the iPhone 5.

The href="http://www.case-mate.com/iphone-5-4s-cases/">iPhone 5 landing page still doesn’t reveal anything, but some of the products specific pages are up. For instance, the href="http://www.case-mate.com/iPhone-5-Cases/Case-Mate-iPhone-5-Barely-There-Brushed-Aluminum-Cases.asp">iPhone 5 Barely There Brushed Aluminum Cases page is totally open, and judging from the little composite that BGR put together (image at top), it’s not the only one. An additional bit of nosing has revealed the href="http://www.case-mate.com/iPhone-5-Cases/Case-Mate-iPhone-5-Safe-Skin-Emerge-Cases.asp">iPhone 5 Safe Skin Emerge and href="http://www.case-mate.com/iPhone-5-Cases/Case-Mate-iPhone-5-Safe-Skin-Emerge-Cases.asp">iPhone 5 Gelli.

None of the pages show the iPhone 5 from the front, but what we can gather from this is that the lock switch has migrated to the opposite side of the volume control. It also looks to be thinner, and with tapered edges.

So, thoughts? What do you guys feels about this new look?

Chronic Dev Team still working on an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak

pod2G iOS 5 untethered

Chronic Dev Team member @pod2g sent out a tweet stating they are all still actively working on an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. After Comex’s departure to Apple a lot of the jailbreak community is wondering how it affects future development of jailbreak tools. Even though Comex played a huge part in the jailbreak scene there will always be many others willing to step in and fill his shoes. The cat and mouse game will always continue.

Even though they are working on a new untethered exploit for iOS 5, it has been stated many times that no untethered version will be released until after the official release of iOS 5. This is typical as a release before would allow Apple time to patch it and leave jailbreakers out in the cold until another exploit is found.

If you’d still like to jailbreak on iOS 5 you can do so via Redsn0w beta if you’re alright with being tethered for a while. And as always, proceed with caution with any beta software and if you run into any problems or have questions, you can always check out our TiPb jailbreak forums.

Excellent deal on a fantastic iPhone 4 case

One of my favorite cases for the iPhone 4 has been the href="http://store.everythingicafe.com/incipio-ultra-light-feather-case/4A123A7092.htm">Incipio Ultra Light Feather Case for the iPhone 4. In fact, I have the same case for other devices. It’s been my go to case for a few months. It normally retails for $24.99, but it’s on sale at the href="http://store.everythingicafe.com">everythingiCafe Store for just $4.95. For those of you who listen to the podcast, you’ve probably heard me reference it on occasion. At this price, I purchased five of these last night, some of which we’ll likely use in a future giveaway. I highly recommend this case. It’s extremely low-profile and those of you who use device protection like the ZAGG Invisible Shield will have no problems using this in conjunction with a shield.

    Facebook Messenger goes global

    Facebook Messenger for iPhone

Last month, Facebook introduced their new messaging app, Facebook Messenger, but it was only available in the US and Canada. Not anymore – Facebook Messenger is now available worldwide!

At first, I was reluctant to use Facebook Messenger because Facebook hasn’t exactly had a great track record with Facebook for iPhone. However, I’ve been pleased with Facebook Messenger because of how quick it is and the fact that it’s not nearly as buggy as Facebook for iPhone.

Facebook Messenger is a faster way to send mobile messages to friends. With Messenger, you can send and receive messages with any of your friends or anyone in your mobile contacts list.

Facebook Messenger is available on the iPhone for free.

Alleged iPhone 5 screen protector shows a larger screen and home button

Unwire.HK has uncovered a few pictures today that are supposedly from a screen protector for the upcoming iPhone 5. The screen protector, if real, shows an elongated opening for the home button as well as a much larger screen size for the new iPhone model compared to the current iPhone 4.

We have seen quite a few case leaks recently which supposedly showed the rear of the iPhone 5 and a few months back there was an alleged iPhone 5 case which does appear to match up with this screen protector. It also showed an elongated opening for the home button which may be for a capacitive touch area rather than a physical button.

The screen size also appears to be larger when compared with an iPhone 4. It is believed however that all of these case and screen protector leaks are based on one particular source of design information; so they may all be wrong or of course, they may all be right. Until Apple announces the iPhone 5, we will just have to wait and see!

Space Invaders creator Taito working on its own version of iCade [video]

Taito, the creator of probably the world’s most famous arcade game, Space Invaders has jumped into the world of miniature iPad arcade cabinets. The new arcade cabinet will be called InvaderCade and will feature artwork from the classic 1978 arcade game.

It is slightly different to the iCade as it lacks 7 of its buttons! This cabinet only has a joystick and one button; aimed solely at playing Space Invaders. The cabinet will also charge your iPad, has inbuilt stereo speakers and a headphone jack.

The InvaderCade will be released in October, but only in Japan. It will cost ¥15,800 which is around $205. I would guess from the price that this is one for the Space Invader purists. It doesn’t even come with any of the Space Invaders games!

    iPhone case for toddlers

One of the most respected astrophysicists in the US, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson and other important academics have often mentioned that we ought to let our kids explore the physical world and experiment with objects in order to encourage a scientific mind. By restricting kids from touching and experiencing the things around them, we really do damage their creative energy and curious minds. This is probably what Fisher-Price has in mind when it introduced the “Laugh and Learn Apptivity” case of the iPhone, which is meant for children between 6 months to 36 months.

However, an iPhone is no toy in any sense of the word. Unless you have a ton of money to spare, the chances are that the iPhone would probably be one of the most expensive electronic gadgets that you own. Fortunately, the Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case is designed to securely hold the iPhone and protect it from the smudges or other damage that your toddler will unleash on it.

The case is constructed of durable rubber and comes with easy-to-grip handles for their small hands. The phone is put into the case through the back, which can only be opened with the twist of a key or coin. Once it is closed, it cannot be opened again easily without some tool, so you can be sure that your kids will not be able to do any real harm to it. In addition, the screen will be protected by clear film. There will also be mini rattles on the handles and a small mirror on the back that is designed to keep children entertained, even when the phone is not in the case. However, keep in mind that the volume controls will be inaccessible. Therefore, it is best to configure the settings before putting the phone into the case.

The case will be available from October onwards and will cost around $15. This is probably the best way to safeguard your iPhone and help enhance your child’s learning.

    iPhone Monster Truck

Amongst the many iPhone gadgets, the stuff that really gets us interested is the toys. You can use a variety of different accessories to enhance any part of the iPhone. However, only a few accessories let you relive your childhood in the best ways possible. We all remember having remote controlled toys when we were younger and the excitement of controlling an object can never really go away. Many toys are specially designed for the iPhone including helicopters and cars. The latest addition to the list of iPhone toys comes from Dexim, which has now released a Monster Truck that is compatible with any iDevice.

The truck is controlled wirelessly using and iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. To operate the truck, users will have to download an app (free) from the App Store called DFSpeed. The truck itself comes with a custom-built RF transmitter. Once you plug it in you will be able to control the truck without much hassle. The control mode allows you to choose between two different sensors: the regular touch sensor or the gravity sensor. The former lets you direct the truck by tapping the directions on the screen. The latter lets you control the truck by tilting the iPhone.

You can also activate the multiplayer mode and race with your friends. In addition, you can also use three different presents, Dance, Spin and Ziplag the truck to music. The truck is also stable enough to be used both indoors and outdoors. Given the quality of the product, it is also cheaper than many other similar accessories on the market. However, always make sure that you see the truck while using it; otherwise, you might cause an unnecessary accident. The Dexim AppSpped Monster Truck can be bought through its website for $69.90. Keep in mind that you will need to download the app to use the truck.
