Miss your tweaks and wondering how to Jailbreak iOS 5? As long as your okay with a tethered jailbreak for now, you can get your jailbreak on again thanks to Redsn0w 0.9.8b1.

It’s worth noting first that the Dev-team is calling this jailbreak a beta. Which means there could (and probably will be) quite a few bugs. If your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak your device. Yes, iPad 2 owners, I’m looking at you!

Best Buy To Price Match Back To School Mac Sale

If you’re less than impressed with Apple’s Back To School promo this year — a $100 iTunes gift card, rather than the free iPod Touches of years previous — then you may find some respite from a big blue box. According to TUAW, Best Buy will match the deal with the same amount of their own, so a $100 Best Buy gift certificate — which can be used on anything in store, including iTunes gift cards if you really want. But what that really means is that you can put those funds to getting a new mouse, a cover for your laptop, an iPhone case, or just about anything else.

We’re not sure how legit this offer is. TUAW reports that it’s not an advertised deal, so you may have to sweet talk a sales rep in order to get it, plus I’m not sure if they offer education pricing. Still, it might be worth looking into if you’re in the market for something new.

XGear Flip Jack Leather/Carbon Fiber Review (iPhone 4)

There has always been something I have liked about the flip case design. It gives you not-so-blatant choices for use. For example, a user can keep his or her iPhone inside of the case at all times or decide to use the case more so as a pouch, taking the iPhone out for the extended use. Though it is a seemingly-dying trend, XGear presents two options with its Flip Jack case for anybody who is also enamored of the flip style.

Since a flap covers the device’s screen, Flip Jack is one of the few cases to provide screen protection without the need for a plastic film. The flap can be quickly pulled to reveal full access to the device, then snugly caught back onto the top of the iPhone’s metal band. Though the front flap cannot extend to the back of the case, it is not an annoyance whilst sticking out in my opinion.

Both the leather and carbon fiber variants of the case are equally thin and share the same size cutouts for buttons and ports. Overall, protection is good as the Flip Jack feels rigid thanks to a hard layer between the leather/carbon fiber and the microsuede lining, encompassing the iPhone well despite how the top right of the case could have been covered. There is a small issue with the microsuede utilized as it makes the case a lint magnet. However I do like how the soft material lines the entire interior.

The carbon fiber styling that the Flip Jack is available in is certainly a good quality. With an interesting, semi-glistening textured look, it presents itself even better in person than the images show. You can’t go wrong with leather either, as it is slightly above average styling and quality. It seems flip case users have been looking for more flair with color choices, however there is a lack of personalization options. Nonetheless, it is definitely nothing to complain about since the case does look nice and is one of the better choices in this price range.

Multiple styles of usage inherent with the flip style and two solid variations make the XGear Flip Jack a great sub-$35 choice. The flip style can be worth a try, especially for new iPhone users since the case provides full protection while shut and when the device is being used for the most part.

Apple And Samsung Heads Trying To Work Out Legal Woes

The ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung has been a messy one, and the four months since Apple started the suit we’ve seen acrimonious lawyer letters, furious accusations, and a back and forth of allegations. Hopefully calmer heads are now prevailing, and according to Reuters, execs from both sides have stepped in to resolve some of these disputes. Apparently these executives hail from :the highest levels: and are “in fact meeting and talking.”

Hopefully this’ll see an amicable end to these suits, as Samsung is an otherwise close ally of Apple, providing many of the components for a number of their devices.

Orange Sound Charge t-shirt will charge your iPhone while you rock [video]

Orange has developed a t-shirt that also doubles as an iPhone charger. The t-shirt which is called the Orange Sound Charge is in a prototype phase at the moment. Extensive testing will be carried out at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

Orange believe that a sound level of around 80dB (which is roughly the ambient noise level of a busy high street) could produce up to 6 watt hours of power. That should be enough to charge up your iPhone which needs 5 watts. The panel in the t-shirt is removable so unlike most festival attendees, you can wash your t-shirt if you need to! Take a look at the video after the break then let us know what you think in the comments!

Offered App – The Easiest, and Most Legal, Way to Get Paid Apps Free

Everyone loves free things, don’t they? That’s why many times people will resort to piracy and such things on the web, which you all hopefully know is illegal – yes folks, you can’t just go out and get paid things for free and expect what you’re doing to be legal! But actually, yes you can. Thanks to OfferedApp, you’ll be able to get popular paid iPhone, Android and Blackberry applications for free.

I’ve been using this free service for the past few days, and it’s wonderful. Started in late April, OfferedApp allows users to download a new paid iPhone, Android and Blackberry application each and every day, by just completing one of four daily offers; these will often include surveys and other such things. The applications offered will range in price anywhere from $0.99 to $9.99.

After completing the offer, an email will be sent to your registered email address, which contains a link that confirms to OfferedApp’s systems that you’ve completed the offer. Soon after, you’ll receive an email from iTunes (this is of course in the case of downloading an iPhone application) with a link to download the daily application. If you’re familiar with iTunes’ gifting process, you just click on the link included in the email, enter your iTunes credentials and voila!

If you’re not comfortable with giving out your basic information (name, zip code, ect.), then the service is most probably not for you. Most of the offers that need to be completed involve giving out your personal info to then complete some sort of survey, which usually doesn’t include credit card numbers, unless you’re signing up for a paid service (not usual). I really didn’t mind giving out my name, birth date, zip code and such as the OfferedApp claims and is confirmed to only partner with advertisers who will respect your privacy.

So far, the website has been pretty successful. Ventures like this don’t seem to ever fail, proven by Free App A Day, Openfeints Free Game of the Day, and other daily deal websites. If you want in on the awesomeness, just head over to OfferedApp, where today’s daily iOS application is Gamevil’s, Air Penguin.

The Mobile Search App Everyone is Talking About – Do@

I have tried several mobile search apps in the past, I usually always end up going back to good ole trusty Google. Creature of habit I suppose, but the Doat/Do@ app is a different animal than I have seen in the past.

It works quite differently in that you type in whatever you are wanting to search. Then several windows within the app pop up and allow you to visually see the top pages you might click on. For example, when you do a Google search you have a list of websites with titles….right? With the Do@ app, you will have the top pages open so that you can visually see your search results without having to open the web page. Then just swipe through your search results and find what you are looking for.

I am now finding myself going to the Doat app more often than Google. It’s a hard habit to break, but I’m getting more of what I want from my search when using it. This app is being talked about everywhere, don’t be the last to join in. The Do@ app is FREE. Hope over to iTunes and get it now.

iCloud features: Manage associated devices in iTunes

iCloud features: Manage associated devices in iTunes

While Apple boldly cut the cord with iOS 5, moving from iTunes to iCloud, it looks like they’re wisely leaving some account management power in the veteran desktop app — namely the ability to manage iCloud associated devices.

With iOS 5 on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you can choose to enable automatic downloads — so any app or iBook (or music in the US) bought on iTunes on Mac or Windows PC, or on any iOS device on your account, is pushed out to every other client on that account. Buy Pages on iPhone, it automatically installs on your iPad as well. With iOS 4.3 and iOS 5, you can also call up a list of previous app (and music in the US) purchases and re-download them.

So seeing exactly which devices are on your account, and being able to remove them if you have to (buh-bye, ex!) is a great feature for iCloud to have, and it makes sense for it to live in iCloud.

Moreover, since you can only change the account any device is registered to once every 90 days (to prevent everyone from logging in to every friends’ account and downloading everyone else’s content without paying for it), iTunes will also show you how many days you have left until you can switch accounts again.

If you only have one device, it may not be a big deal. If you’re managing a family, or your account status is as complicated as your relationships, it may matter to you more.

Developer Spotlight: Alexander Tsepko of FX Photo Studio

Developer Spotlight: Alexander Tsepko of FX Photo StudioTiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Alexander Tsepko from MacPhun.

Note: This interview was conducted a few days before WWDC 2011.

What’s your name? Alexander Tsepko. Some people call me AT.

What’s your company? MacPhun LLC.

Where are you located? USA and Ukraine (Europe). Most of MacPhun people are located in these two countries. But we also have freelancers (developers, beta testers, designers) in some other countries around the world. These people give us great input on what features to include in apps. For example we collected suggestions on what filters to include in FX Photo Studio from all continents and it is absolutely amazing how tastes differ.

What’s your website address? www.macphun.com – corporate home page, which is now in the process of remaking, but you can get an idea about what applications we have developed. Also we have www.fxphotostudioapp.com, www.perfectphotoapp.com, www.silentfilmdirector.com and www.cartoonaticapp.com for our most loved apps.

What’s your Twitter name? Mostly I use @fxphotostudio where I share news about our photo applications, iPhoneography and all fun things. You can say it is both personal and business; I am not a type of person to keep several accounts for different purposes. Don’t have that much time. Also there is @silentfilmdir, where we tweet about things related to video with iPhone and iPod touch.

What apps do you make? We have a photo processing application FX Photo Studio for iPhone and FX Phone Studio HD for iPad. There is a version for iOS and newly released version for Mac OS, which is called FX Photo Studio PRO. Then we have Silent Film Director for iOS. This app lets you create awesome retro movies. Photo editor for iPhone Perfect Photo and photo editor for iPad PhotoPal. Also fresh and free video app Cartoonatic for shooting animated videos. This is by far my favorite app. I am a big A-HA fan and this app lets you create music video which will look almost like that famous “Take on me” clip. We have developed more apps, but these are the titles which people and us love and use most.

What apps, other than your own, are currently among your favorites? As a photo and video fanboy I really love Instagram for sharing and innovations, QuickPix for speed, Super 8 for style and LensFlare for almost everything about it. Also I am greatly enjoying the app, called SkyView, it lets you see some mind blowing things around you. And I play Infinity Blade quite often: have spent lots of money on in-app purchases, so I am not surprised they are among top grossing apps. Wondering if guys from Chair Entertainment Group ever purchased in-apps in FX Photo Studio☺

How long have you been a developer? How long have you been an iOS developer? Almost from the day Steve Jobs went on stage and showed iPhone to the world. We were sure and we still are that this big little (or little big) device changed everything. Right now I don’t do much of development and mostly take care of marketing and corporate relations.

Do you develop for any other platform in addition to iOS? If so, which one(s)? We have recently released FX Photo Studio for Mac and therefore made our way into software business. Enjoying it, getting good feedback from Mac users, learning things… Not a secret we are looking at other platforms, including Android, Bada, Symbian, etc. Looks promising and challenging; we will introduce our apps to those markets pretty soon. And since we have developed FX Photo Studio PRO for Mac, why not making a version for Windows as well. All users should have equal opportunities, shouldn’t they?

What primary computer setup do you use for your iOS development? I have MacBook Pro with latest software just to be on top of things. iPad 2 arrived recently. Plus the one and only iPhone 4. Just enough not to miss important things and make sure no one important misses you. If you visit our offices, you will find about a dozen of different iPhones for testing, same with iPads and a variety of different Macs. We even have those toy-looking iBooks. Not to mention few Android and smartphones to know what’s new among Android apps.

What mobile devices, other than iOS, do you currently use? None at the moment, but thinking of getting few Samsung and Nokia devices to test some of the apps they offer. I am a big Apple fan, can’t imagine what can make me move to other device, though I tried many.

What’s your favorite thing about developing for iOS? First thing that comes to mind is that practically anyone can learn how to do this. But the most favorite thing is no doubt a possibility to meet new people. You won’t believe how many people inspire me and they are all connected with Apple (I mean the brand, not necessarily Apple Inc). I have been working in different markets, but for some reason people who are connected with Apple are the friendliest, smartest and most innovative I ever met. Glad to be among them.

What’s your least favorite thing about developing for iOS? That practically everyone does it and the number is growing, thus you see lots of apps, which I wish I’ve never seen in my life. They are that bad.

What feature would you most like Apple to add to the iOS SDK? Frankly speaking, I am ok even with current features. I mean lots of people were fine without web search until Google came and now they can’t live without it. I am pretty fine with current iOS SDK, but am sure that next version will bring something I won’t be able to live without as time passes. This is what I like most about everything Apple makes.

What feature would you most like Apple to add to the App Store? It could be cool to let developers contact users who leave comments about apps. Quite often you get some feedback and you know you have to reply to it with a suggestion or additional question and you just can’t do that. Would be cool to let developers leave comments, which are highlighted with a different color, so people know that a developer left it. A developer will be given a limited number of such comments (2-5 per app), not to turn the feedback section into chat room, but reply to a particular comment or discussion.

Also I really love the idea of showing people up to 300 top apps, not TOP 50 only. FX Photo Studio is in TOP 50 and our other apps are among category tops, so we should not worry, but I know how many awesome apps were left unnoticeable just because the users could not see them. And the last, but not least, Apple should do something with iPad App Store, the navigation is quite confusing. Or is it just me?

What do you do when you’re not coding iOS apps? I learn how to drive a small single engine plane (not mine☺), take pictures with iPhone, try to get in touch with tech bloggers to let them have our apps, beta test apps by other developers, watch Lie to Me and (most of the time) plan the birth of our first kid with my awesome wife.

What should we look for from you next? Definitely more apps and updates. MacPhun stays in this business. First of all new versions of FX Photo Studio both for iOS and Mac OS. We are now looking for iPhoneographers and Photographers who will help us to develop new filters and frames. So, if you are one of those people, or know anyone, feel free to contact me for details. Also, new features for Silent Film Director App. The app has almost 300 000 users now, so it would be good to give this army of retro fans something new to play with. And so on and so forth.

Thanks Alex!

iOS 5 Features: Unsecured call warning

iOS 5 Features: Unsecured call warning

Not that many of us are Bond, Borne, or Sarah Walker types, but just in case you might be a target for cellular call eavesdropping, [iOS 5](http://www.tipb.com/ios/] will now warn you when you’re talking over an unsecured network. If you’re a high value target, you’re probably avoiding even the secure ones, but if you’re simply living next to a nosy neighbor with too much time and Radio Shack kit on his or her hands, it could be handy to know when you’re vulnerable.

Anyone glad for this warning?

New York Post now blocking iPad Safari browser from accessing its content

The New York Post has put up a paywall which prevents users accessing its web content from an iPad. Now when you visit its online site via the Safari browser on your iPad you get a message asking you to download the app!

Thanks for coming. NYPost.com editorial content is now only accessible on the iPad through the New York Post App.

Previously accessing the site with Safari on the iPad resulted in a landing page informing users about the app but allowed users to continue to the content. The app costs $1.99 and gives you 30 days access to the content. After the 30 days you need to pay for a subscription at $6.99/month, $39.99/six months or $74.99/year. It seems like the New York Post are targeting iPad users in this instance, as access on other tablets and PC’s is still available via the browser.

The New York Post’s Facebook page also resulted in the same message when accessing it from an iPad. The restriction seems to be aimed squarely at Safari on the iPad, as you can still access the content via the Safari browser on your iPhone and third party iPad browsers such as Skyfire or Opera Mini.

What do you think of the New York Posts decision to prevent iPad users from accessing its online content in the Safari browser?

WebApps To Go Nitro With iOS 5

Back in March, the blogosphere was afire with word that Apple’s high speed Java app boost that was available in iOS 4.3 didn’t work on web apps saved to the home screen. This tool, called Nitro, simply wasn’t enabled for full screen web apps, causing some consternation, and then everyone promptly forgot about it. Now, months later, it appears that Apple has remedied this problem in iOS 5. Now, if you have a web app saved to your homescreen, you should see a major boost, same as if you ran it through Safari in previous iterations.

The Nitro engine is now set up not just to run through Safari.app, but also Web.app, the application that full web apps use to function.

Wacom Releases Bamboo Paper To Push Stylus

Wacom have been the king of the drawing tablet sphere for years, and you could always spot a well-paid web artist by how big of a Wacom tablet they had strapped to their desk. Recently Wacom started pushing into the iOS sphere, and has just released an iPad app to help sell their Bamboo Stylus.

The (currently) free app is called Bamboo Paper, and while I’m sure Wacom would love for you to drop $30 on a fancy-ass stylus, you can use your finger, a cheapo $2 capacitive stylus, a gummi bear, a sausage, or anything else sufficiently conductive with the app, and it’ll work just fine.

[via MacStories]

Capcom Drops Price On Four Action Games To $0.99

A late-breaking sale from the fine folks at Capcom: four big action titles have dropped in price to just $0.99. For a mere buck, you can now pick up Dead Rising MobileDevil May Cry 4 refrainResident Evil Mercenaries VS. or Street Fighter IV.

Nothing like beating up a bunch of zombies, monsters, mercenaries, or world warriors to start your week! Some of these apps normally go for $4.99, so you’re getting a huge bargain in picking them up now. Dead Rising is usually only $1.99, but the others will definitely save you more.

New York Post Kills Mobile Safari Access To Their Site

The New York Post has had enough of you freeloading iOS users reading their website! Why, just because you can read it free online from your computer doesn’t mean you can do so from your iPad! That’s why they’ve now banned access to their website from Mobile Safari in order to push people to buy their iPad subcription. That’s right, if you try and hit their site from your iOS device using Safari, you get blocked and asked to buy the app. The stupidest part? Any other iOS browser is fine. As Staci Kramer from PaidContent points out:

Even better, apparently no one there noticed or cared that users of other iPad browsers like Skyfire and Opera Mini can slip right in. It is one of the most poorly conceived paywall efforts I’ve come across—and I’ve seen more than a few.

They expect you to fork out $6.99/month, $39.99/six months or $74.99/year, when you can get it free from your desktop, or another browser. This also kills any links that you try and click from their Facebook feed.

Oh man, without the New York Post, where will I get my bad pun headlines and salacious gossip? Oh, right, the internet.

iPad 3 Details Indicate That It May Launch This Year

BizJournals may have a source with solid information on the iPad 3. However for whatever reason, hours afterward the article containing details about the next, highly-anticipated iPad was pulled from BizJournals. That leaves us to pulling apart a recap of BizJournals’ information from TekGoblin.

According to the original report, the display on iPad 3 will have a (truly groundbreaking) 2560×1920 resolution. That is super high-res, and at six times the pixel density of the current iPad, it definitely qualifies as a Retina Display. To be blunt, its display will look stunning if true.

That impressive specification is paired with a launch date that seems fairly unlikely. Rather than a release next year as part of an annual cycle, iPad 3 would reportedly release in time for the holiday season this year.

It does seem like Apple would sell even more iPad tablets during the holidays if the release cycle is changed to fall since customers would not have to worry about their gift becoming outdated within a few weeks as had happened to 2010 holiday buyers. Still, individual products see more distinct, constant exposure with separate announcements so it may not be the best idea to release so many new products around the same time, making the source of the “grain of salt” kind.

Quarter four of this year would put the next-generation iPad’s launch alongside new iPod models (or not) and a new iPhone according to other rumors. Well, there certainly would not be a shortage of new Apple products to put under the tree!
