AppleCare+ Now Protects You From Your Own Stupidity

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/APPLECARE-plus.jpeg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24054" title="APPLECARE-plus" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/APPLECARE-plus.jpeg" alt="" width="185" height="185" />

As anyone who’s ever dropped the iPhone 4 and shattered the back-plate knows, AppleCare doesn’t cover accidental damage. You might be able to beg your way into swapping it, but only if your local genius is super nice. Now meethref="http://store.apple.com/us/product/S4575?mco=MjU5MTk4MjQ"> AppleCare+, which will protect against just that. It costs $99 and you have to buy it when you get your phone, but here’s the official description:

Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage and 90 days of telephone technical support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling, each subject to a $49 service fee.1 With AppleCare+ for iPhone, Apple experts can help troubleshoot issues over the phone or at an Apple Retail Store. They’ll answer questions about iOS, Apple iPhone apps such as Mail, iMessage, and Calendar, and help you solve interconnectivity issues between your iPhone and Mac or PC. And if your iPhone needs service under the plan, Apple technical support representatives can even set up a repair during the same call.

If you’re a bit of a klutz, that might be worth $99 plus the $49 repair fee. Though href="http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/">SquareTrade might have something very cool in the works, too.

“Let’s Talk iPhone” event video now available [Updated]

Apple has posted their streaming video feed and iTunes podcast download for the Let’s Talk iPhone event. So if reading all the live blogs and news still isn’t enough for you, you can hop on over to Apple’s events page and watch the keynote address for yourself.

To summarize, here’s what you can expect -

When the YouTube version shows up, we’ll add them in. Meanwhile, hit the links below to watch the keynote for yourself.

iPhone 4S brings 1080p HD video recording, image stabilization

One of the many features announced on the iPhone 4S is 1080p HD video recording. This is a nice improvement over the iPhone 4′s 720p HD video recording. The goodness does not stop there, however. In addition to 1080p, the iPhone 4S is equipped with video stabilization to help steady those non-professional, bouncy video recording skills.

Since the iPhone 4S video camera is the same 8MP camera used for stills, it will benefit from the larger aperture and improved illumination sensor, bringing you more accurate colors and better low-light videos.

You can see examples of the camera and stabilization on Apple’s website. I encourage you to check them out, it really shows off how great video recording on the iPhone 4S will be.

Check Your iPhone 4S Eligibility Through Apple

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Screen-Shot-2011-10-04-at-3.56.54-PM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24064" title="Screen Shot 2011-10-04 at 3.56.54 PM" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Screen-Shot-2011-10-04-at-3.56.54-PM.jpg" alt="" width="594" height="526" />

If you’re on Verizon or AT&T (sorry, not Sprint yet) you can actually check your iPhone 4S upgrade eligibility href="https://buyiphone.apple.com/WebObjects/IPACustomer.woa/wa/IPAToolAction/springboard">through Apple’s website. You’ll need your phone number, zip, last 4 of your social, and possibly a billing password. Let us know in the comments if you’re eligible — href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/how-to-check-if-youre-eligible-for-an-iphone-5-upgrade/2011/09/30/">if your eligibility is different from last time you checked — and if you think you’ll upgrade or not. I know a lot of people are less than impressed with the iPhone 4S, so will it be cool enough to prompt you to get a new one? Or will this be Apple’s first lukewarm iPhone launch?

The iPhone 4S Videos

style="text-align: center;">href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Screen-Shot-2011-10-04-at-4.04.54-PM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24068" title="Screen Shot 2011-10-04 at 4.04.54 PM" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Screen-Shot-2011-10-04-at-4.04.54-PM.jpg" alt="" width="505" height="284" />

If you can hit reload until the videos actually pop up, you can see some pretty cool new videos from Apple showing off their new features. There’s one for the href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/#video-4s">iPhone 4S, href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/index.html#siri-video">Siri, and href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/#video-icloud">iCloud. It’s pretty iffy if you’ll be able to get them right now as Apple’s servers seem to be beaten beyond belief, but they’re there if you keep trying.

Man, if this is what happens at launch, then I can’t even imagine what will happen to them on Friday when preorders open.

Apple iPhone MicroUSB Adapter Now Available In Europe

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/apple-micro-usb-adapter.jpeg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24074" title="apple-micro-usb-adapter" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/apple-micro-usb-adapter.jpeg" alt="" width="326" height="326" />

Way back in 2009, it was decided that every phone sold in Europe should href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/un-body-approves-universal-phone-charger/2009/10/23/">work with the same charging cable — a universal microUSB, so you wouldn’t need a special proprietary cord at all. Apple signed the accord, and now two years later we’ve finally spotted the adapter they’re using. It’s the href="http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD099?mco=MjU5MjAwODM">Apple iPhone Micro USB Adapter and it’ll set you back £8.00, and as far as we know it’s Europe only. That said, hopefully it’s on its way to the USA, and we can reduce our everyday carry by one cord. I’m much happier to carry an adapter than another cable that’ll just get tangled.

Here’s the description:

Use this adapter to connect iPhone to a micro USB cable to sync and charge, or to a micro USB charger to charge.

Apple now offering AppleCare+ for iPhone, now includes accidental damage

Apple is now offering a new service called AppleCare+. AppleCare+ is only available for the iPhone and adds accidental damage to the usual AppleCare.

AppleCare+ for iPhone extends repair coverage and technical support to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone and adds coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage due to handling, each subject to a $49 service fee.

As well as this additional feature of accidental damage, AppleCare+ still offers all the previous features of AppleCare; such as two year repair coverage and technical support from the original purchase date. To qualify for AppleCare+ it must be taken out at the same time as you buy your new iPhone and costs $99.

Samsung spreading anti-iPhone 4S talking points

Samsung emailing anti-iPhone 4S talking points

Not content with letting the Apple fanboys self-immolate over expectational depression, Samsung’s Kim Titus has decided to spread some iPhone 4S talking points of their own in handy email form. I’ll spare you the preamble and jump straight to the good stuff:

Screen size benefits scale by AREA (length x width), not just diagonal; the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II has 42% more screen area and Sprint / T-Mobile versions of Galaxy S II have 58% more screen area than the iPhone 4S.

The Galaxy S II HSPA+ network speeds are at least 50% faster with AT&T 21 MBPS and three times faster with T-Mobile’s 42 MBPS than the iPhone 4S’s 14 MBPS HSPA network.

Galaxy S II continues to have the thinnest smartphone design with the fastest network speed on each of the networks carrying the smartphone (AT&T, Sprint & T-Mobile) including today’s announcement of the iPhone 4S specs for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

Open Ecosystem – Consumers can use the Galaxy S II to buy music from Amazon, Rhapsody, or a variety of other music services, as well as multiple cloud music services supported such as Amazon, Google Music and multiple video chat clients available for use including Google Chat and Skype. The Samsung Galaxy S II is not limited to a single manufacturer’s storefront or app store.

Sure, the last point is quasi-BS, but the Galaxy S II is a gorgeous set of phones, no doubt about that. (Just check out Phil’s review of the AT&T Galaxy S II on Android Central). And Android device makers have always been well armed in the spec fight. Still, iPhone 4S is no slouch in that department either, and with Siri it’s fair to say they’ve taken user experience to a whole new level.

Is this Samsung seizing on perceived user displeasure over Apple’s iPhone 4S announcement, or panicking slightly over what Apple’s about to drop like Mjolnir on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint?

Siri App Store app to be discontinued Oct. 15. iPhone 4S Siri not coming to Canada? [Updated]

Siri App Store app to be discontinued Oct. 15. iPhone 4S Siri not coming to Canada?

Looks like the old Siri app will officially be yanked from the App Store on Oct. 15, hot on the heels of Apple baking it into iOS 5 on iPhone 4S. It also looks like while Siri for iPhone 4S will be available in the US and UK, it won’t be available in Canada at launch. At least Apple’s Canadian website is completely devoid of any Siri mention at all.

I’d make an accent joke here, eh, but if true, it’s disturbing for Canadian users. Why would Canada be left out? Either a patent issue or a licensing issue that’s unique to Canada?

And without Siri — the highlight of Apple’s Let’s Talk iPhone event — is an iPhone 4S enough of a new phone to still interest Canadian consumers?

UPDATE: Jim Dalrymple checked with Apple PR and reports Siri will indeed be coming to Canada. [The Loop]

iPhone 4S camera: 8 MP, f/2.4, face detection, & more

Apple has announced that the new iPhone 4S, set to be released on October 14, is equipped with an 8-megapixel camera – well, that’s what people keep referring to it as, anyway. In fact, this camera is so much more than a simple 8 MP camera; Apple sums it up great as:

The you-can’t-believe-it’s-on-a-phone camera.

The biggest thing that wowed me about the iPhone 4S camera is that it is equipped with an f/2.4 lens. This has many great benefits:

This lens, combined with the A5 processor chip and it’s digital signal processor, will allow you to snap photos with virtually no shutter lag (Apple says 1.1 seconds for the first picture, less for subsequent pictures). With the additional added feature from iOS 5 that gives quick camera access to the lock screen, you can say goodbye to missed moments.

Another great feature of the iPhone 4S camera is face detection. This isn’t new to point-and-shoot cameras, so it’s definitely a welcomed addition to the iPhone. When taking a portrait or group shot, the camera will focus on the most prominent face and balance exposure across up to 10 faces.

Some other improvements to the camera include a hybrid infrared filter and advanced algorithms in iOS 5 for even more color accuracy, better white balance, and greater dynamic range.

In my opinion, the least exciting thing about this camera is the bump to 8-megapixels. However, it is nice to know that I’ll be able to get decent 8″x10″ prints from the iPhone 4S camera or crop them down without causing too much damage to the final image.

I hate to say it, but for the average user, the iPhone 4S’s camera will, in many ways, be better than most DSLR cameras equipped with a kit lens.

Hit the link below to check out the sample photos on Apple’s website. They’re stunning.

“Let’s Talk iPhone” event video now available

Apple has posted their streaming video feed for the Let’s Talk iPhone event. So if reading all the live blogs and news still isn’t enough for you, you can hop on over to Apple’s events page and watch the keynote address for yourself.

To summarize, here’s what you can expect -

When the YouTube and iTunes versions show up, we’ll add them in. Meanwhile, hit the link below to watch the keynote for yourself.

Apple Events

The Best Way to Hear About the New iPhone(s): Spoiler-Free (Update: Watch the Keynote Now!)

Due to the popularity of our previous spoiler-free post, we will continue the trend as promised. The basic gist of “spoiler-free” is that participants watch the keynote video before reading about anything that has happened, which does take some effort to avoid. However, if you are planning to watch the keynote video anyway it is in a sense more entertaining to not know exactly what comes next and to leave room open for surprises.

Read the full spoiler-free description below:

“Spoiler-free” is really for the geeks and fanboys, as you have to actually avoid practically every news site (that includes AOL and Yahoo) while Apple prepares the video that is recorded during the event for streaming.

The reason why you would want to go “spoiler-free” is simple: you get to watch everything being unveiled with potential for surprises rather than reading it all off in a list. If you are planning to watch the video afterwards anyway, then why not go into it without knowing which rumors pan out, what we have completely overlooked, and the smaller details that will shake up the industry?

We do have to give credit to onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.macrumors.com');" target="_blank" href="http://www.macrumors.com">MacRumors for pioneering the idea, though admittedly I was looking for such a way to watch the keynote before I came across how MacRumors offers/offered that

If you would like to participate, stay away from news sites, as they all will have covered the event (that includes our homepage). Also, Apple will send an email filled with details to newsletter subscribers so subscribers may want to be cautious while checking email. Don’t scroll down the page, as the columns on the right will undoubtedly give details away. It is highly recommended to set this post as your browser homepage so you will know the moment that the keynote video is up.

Yes, this is not effortless and may seem ridiculous to some, but to a select few including myself, it is worthwhile to be able to watch announcements presented (in one of Apple’s famous, arguably entertaining keynotes) without prior knowledge.

As soon as the keynote video is available online tomorrow night (usually at around 7pm EST, but that is not guaranteed), you will find the link to watch it below in an update to this post.

Update: The keynote video is now up! Watch it onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/11piuhbvdlbkvoih10/event/index.html');" target="_blank" href="http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/11piuhbvdlbkvoih10/event/index.html">here.

Apple posts “See how Siri works” video

Apple has posted a video guide to its just announced Siri service. It starts with a jogger using a wired headset to ask Siri to read his messages. He then he dictates a reply all without breaking stride. He then asks Siri to start to play his running mix to continue his run! If Siri works this well, it is going to be a really compelling feature on the iPhone 4S.

Oct. 4 Keynote Wrap Up

After an almost 2 hour keynote address from Tim Cook and Apple, all of our questions have finally been answered.  Here’s a recap of what Cook had to say today:

Cook started off the address by discussing the new stores.  The new store in Shanghai China had 100,000 visitors it’s opening weekend, it took the Los Angeles store a month to get that many visitors.  Apple now has 357 stores in 11 countries.

Lion was adopted 10 times faster than Windows 7, but Apple still only has 23 percent of the PC market, still a ways to go.

Ten years ago, Apple announced the first generation iPod, boy oh boy have we come a long ways from that.  Over those 10 years, Apple has sold more than 300 MILLION iPods.  That’s almost one for every person in the US.  ITunes is the No. 1 music store in the world and has sold more than 16 billion songs.

Now a little on the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad.  Three out of four tablets sold are iPads, so shocking!

Now to skip ahead to the biggy, the new iPhone!  When you really think about it, the 4S was the most logical step based on what Apple has done in the past.  The first generation iPhone, then big advancement to the iPhone 3G, then software advancement but same body with the 3GS, then complete redo with the 4 and now just a software advancement.  Next year we can look forward to an iPhone 5 or whatever number now.

With the iPhone 4S come iOS 5 and iCloud.  I have an iPhone 4 and I’m looking forward to iOS 5 before I decide if I want to go out and buy the new phone.  With iOS 5 comes the new notifications center, Twitter integration, iMessage, Reminders and Newsstand to name a few.  In total there are 200 new features with iOS 5.  iOS will be available for download on Oct. 12 (next Wednesday).

So how about the features of the new 4S?  Well first, the camera has been updated to 8 megapixel and can film videos at 1080p.  There is also a stabilizer feature on video so no more Blair Witch Project videos!  There’s a new sensor that captures 73 percent more light which means brighter pictures.

And now Siri.  Siri proves to me that Terminator is doomed to happen and we will soon be taken over by machines/electronics.  Combine Siri with the IBM computer that won Jeopardy, we’re doomed I tell ya!  But back to what Siri is.  As Siri replied in the keynote “I am a humble personal assistant.”  Think voice control but a gazillion times better.  Want to change your noon appointment to 2 p.m. and notify the others at the meeting while taking your morning run?  No big deal when you have an iPhone 4S.  Want to know about the weather?  Why take the time to open up the app while packing when Siri can tell you while you’re looking at your closet.

What about Antenna-gate?  Well now that shouldn’t be a problem because now there are TWO antennas on the iPhone 4S that switch back and forth depending on which antenna has a better signal.

How about battery life?  Now 8 hours of 3G talk time, 9 hours browsing on Wi-Fi, 10 hours video, 40 hours music!

The iPhone 4S also runs on a dual-core A5 processor which delivers up to twice the processing power.

How about pricing and availability: you can pre-order starting on Oct. 7, this Friday, and it’s available on AT&T, Verizon and now Sprint.  Available in black and white and will be $199 for a 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for the new 64GB model.  The iPhone 4 8GB will be $99 and the 3GS will now be free with a two year contract.

Well folks, there ya have it!  Now, who’s gonna pre-order this Friday?

Spec Wars: iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II vs. BlackBerry Bold 9900 vs. HTC Titan vs. Pre3

Spec Wars: iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II vs. BlackBerry Bold 9900 vs. HTC Titan vs. Pre3

Now that Apple has officially announced the iPhone 4S and put its specs on the table, we can put those specs up against the other baddest phones on the planet — the current flagship devices for Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and webOS.

Each, of course, has its own unique advantages:

iPhone 4S is blazing fast with the elegant and powerful iOS 5 and the jaw-dropping Assistant artificial intelligence-meets voice control system.

Samsung Galaxy S II has a huge, incredibly bright display, ultra-thin profile, and Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread with TouchWiz on top.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 brings touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard together in a way unseen since the best days of the Treo and combines in all the killer communication power of the BlackBerry 7 platform.

HTC Titan makes other big phones feel small, with a gigantic screen, the polish of Microsoft’s Metro UI, and the features of the newly releases Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update.

Pre3 may never see the light of day, thanks to HP, but we include it here so a) we can look at the battle that might have been, and b) our webOS friends don’t kick us in the shins.

It’s a more competitive market than ever before so check out the phones above and let us know — did iPhone 4S just vault Apple back to the top?

Cards will cost $2.99 in the US and $4.99 everywhere else.

iOS 5 to be released as a free update on October 12th

iOS 5 is slated to be released as a free update on October 12th for current iOS users. This is a bit different than in the past where iPod Touch users typically had to pay a fee of $9.95 for major iOS updates.

This probably means the rumored October 14th release date for the next hardware version of iPhone is right on track. Software typically is released officially just a few days beforehand so the new hardware can come with new software straight out of the box.

No WiMax or LTE for iPhone this year?

iPhone 6 to support LTE in 2012 via Qualcomm MDM9615?

Just like our good friends over at The Cell Phone Junkie have been saying pretty much all along, the Wall Street Journal‘s own people familiar with those briefed on the sources are now chiming in with WiMax- and LTE- (Long Term Evolution) busting reports of their own.

[The next generation iPhone] won’t operate on long-term evolution or WiMAX fourth-generation networks.

Which has always made sense, given the proper chipset for lower-powered LTE won’t be ready until 2012 and WiMax has no real footprint outside of Sprint.

Still, iPhone 5/iPhone 4S should support HSPA+, which AT&T, Rogers, et. al will still call 4G anyway… But that will leave Verizon — and Sprint, if they get the next generation iPhone today as expected — stuck on the slower, more limited EVDO Rev A for another year. Would that weigh into your carrier choice at all?

Poll: What do you think Apple will announce at Let’s Talk iPhone?

Today’s the day and Apple’s bug Let’s Talk iPhone event is only hours away, so… what do you think they’ll announce? Will we get a hot, redesigned iPhone 5 or a hot but not redesigned iPhone 4S? Will voice get the spotlight via SIRI powered Assistant and Nuance Dictation? Will iPod touch continue to keep pace with new models and A5 chipsets or will they get left behind? Will traditional iPods even get mentioned? (What about my nano watch?!) Will Apple TV remain a hobby or will it get a 1080p update and some great new iCloud powered content to go with it? Will there be a surprise iTunes 11 with great new features or is iTunes 10.5 cutting the cord and that’s it? Will there be some amazing new apps shown off on stage or just a drawn out series of demos like in years past? Will Steve Jobs make an appearance if he so wishes or is this truly the new Tim Cook show? Will there be one more thing, and if so, what will it be?

In a few hours Apple will hold their Let’s Talk iPhone event and we’ll have our answers. Right now, there’s still time for some last minute speculative fun. So put your cards on the table and vote for what you think Apple will announce (not what you want — that’s all glowing Apple logos and voice activation — but what you realistically think Apple will show off). Then jump in the comments and give me the details so come this afternoon we can see who got the closest!

The Best Way to Hear About the New iPhone(s): Spoiler-Free

Apple said to be working on an iPad video app to compete with cable providers

Well known blogger, Robert Scoble claims that Apple will announce an iPad app to challenge the cable TV giants. The iPad app will provide video content which he claims is the main reason for Apple’s huge data center.

I’m hearing that Apple is working on a new iPad app that looks a lot like DirecTV without the dish, too. Again, that app will have Steve Jobs’ fingerprints all over it as it will be more expansive than the press is expecting in its content availability. There’s a reason Apple built a 500,000-square-foot datacenter (about twice the size of a Facebook one, by the way) and that new datacenter is for video and the data that video causes to be shared with everyone.

As today’s event is called “Let’s Talk iPhone”, I am not sure that this will be the place to announce such an app. More to the point, surely this service would be more suited to the Apple TV than the iPad? I guess we will have to wait and see, not much longer now!
