Oct. 4 Keynote Wrap Up

After an almost 2 hour keynote address from Tim Cook and Apple, all of our questions have finally been answered.  Here’s a recap of what Cook had to say today:

Cook started off the address by discussing the new stores.  The new store in Shanghai China had 100,000 visitors it’s opening weekend, it took the Los Angeles store a month to get that many visitors.  Apple now has 357 stores in 11 countries.

Lion was adopted 10 times faster than Windows 7, but Apple still only has 23 percent of the PC market, still a ways to go.

Ten years ago, Apple announced the first generation iPod, boy oh boy have we come a long ways from that.  Over those 10 years, Apple has sold more than 300 MILLION iPods.  That’s almost one for every person in the US.  ITunes is the No. 1 music store in the world and has sold more than 16 billion songs.

Now a little on the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad.  Three out of four tablets sold are iPads, so shocking!

Now to skip ahead to the biggy, the new iPhone!  When you really think about it, the 4S was the most logical step based on what Apple has done in the past.  The first generation iPhone, then big advancement to the iPhone 3G, then software advancement but same body with the 3GS, then complete redo with the 4 and now just a software advancement.  Next year we can look forward to an iPhone 5 or whatever number now.

With the iPhone 4S come iOS 5 and iCloud.  I have an iPhone 4 and I’m looking forward to iOS 5 before I decide if I want to go out and buy the new phone.  With iOS 5 comes the new notifications center, Twitter integration, iMessage, Reminders and Newsstand to name a few.  In total there are 200 new features with iOS 5.  iOS will be available for download on Oct. 12 (next Wednesday).

So how about the features of the new 4S?  Well first, the camera has been updated to 8 megapixel and can film videos at 1080p.  There is also a stabilizer feature on video so no more Blair Witch Project videos!  There’s a new sensor that captures 73 percent more light which means brighter pictures.

And now Siri.  Siri proves to me that Terminator is doomed to happen and we will soon be taken over by machines/electronics.  Combine Siri with the IBM computer that won Jeopardy, we’re doomed I tell ya!  But back to what Siri is.  As Siri replied in the keynote “I am a humble personal assistant.”  Think voice control but a gazillion times better.  Want to change your noon appointment to 2 p.m. and notify the others at the meeting while taking your morning run?  No big deal when you have an iPhone 4S.  Want to know about the weather?  Why take the time to open up the app while packing when Siri can tell you while you’re looking at your closet.

What about Antenna-gate?  Well now that shouldn’t be a problem because now there are TWO antennas on the iPhone 4S that switch back and forth depending on which antenna has a better signal.

How about battery life?  Now 8 hours of 3G talk time, 9 hours browsing on Wi-Fi, 10 hours video, 40 hours music!

The iPhone 4S also runs on a dual-core A5 processor which delivers up to twice the processing power.

How about pricing and availability: you can pre-order starting on Oct. 7, this Friday, and it’s available on AT&T, Verizon and now Sprint.  Available in black and white and will be $199 for a 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for the new 64GB model.  The iPhone 4 8GB will be $99 and the 3GS will now be free with a two year contract.

Well folks, there ya have it!  Now, who’s gonna pre-order this Friday?
