Epic already imagining iPhone 8 gaming

Epic already imagining iPhone 8 gaming

Mike Caps, president of Unreal Engine-powered, Infinity Blade swinging Epic Games, thinks that rather than next generation consoles from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, people should be keeping their eyes peeled on iPhone 8 gaming, circa 2015:

“So I think that’s the real challenge for us now, rather than worrying about the difference between a couple consoles and some order of magnitude, whether 3X or 4X. It’s about how do we deal with iPhone 8… if you watch where the gamers are going that’s where they are. Your iPhone 8 will probably plug into your TV, or better yet, wirelessly connect to your television set to give you that big screen gaming experience with good sound. So really, what’s the point of those next-gen consoles? It’s a very interesting situation to be looking at. That’s what we’re starting to think about more… not how do we scale from some Nintendo platform to some other future console,” he concluded.

In a clarification, Epic walked that back a bit, saying mobile won’t be replacing consoles any time soon — nor should they, in our opinion, following the same logic Steve Jobs used to describe mobile as the cars to traditional platform trucks.

But given how much better iPhone 4 is compared to the original iPhone 2G, it’s fair to ask what kind of games and experiences will be able to run on an iPhone 8 in a few years, and wonder if, and for how much of the market, that might just be no only enough, but preferable.

Apple Cracking Down On Non-Developer iOS 5 Users

href="http://www.karthikk.net/2011/08/apple-disabling-ios-5-devices-who-purchased-udids-from-other-devs/">According to Karthikk.net, people who have been getting access to iOS 5 but aren’t developers might soon be facing Apple’s wrath. Apparently, Apple knows which developers passed on their UDID’s to non-developers for money, allowing people who weren’t meant to have early access on to the OS.

Developers are given a finite number of slots with their account in order for them to run an early version of iOS to test. There’s a bit of a black market trade in these slots, which Apple is now chasing down.

Apple has been sending out emails to developers accused of this, and then banning their accounts from the developer’s program — leaving their phones non-functional. Apparently you can downgrade to get out of it, but that’s not much fun if you’ve been enjoying iOS 5.

If Apple really is taking a hard line on this, I’m curious to see if it’ll go beyond just those who sold the UDIDs, and to those who passed them out to friends and media types. The NDA wall around betas is functionally transparent, at least partly because some non-developer bloggers get in on the beta, and report all its details. If Apple starts chasing them down, the reporting on beta changes might substantially change.

Manage milestones, deadlines and due dates with TimeSpan for iPhone, iPad

TimeSpan, by Partixel, is a productivity app for iPhone and iPad that allows you to keep track of important dates with countdowns.

Never again a sleepless night due to a forgotten milestone.

TimeSpan is a minimalist app that makes it easy and simple to manage all your milestones, deadlines and due dates just on your iPhone.

I’ve played around with TimeSpan and I really like the UI. I love that it not only helps you keep manage important dates, but displays them as a countdown bar so that you have a way to visually see how close or far away a date is.

TimeSpan is available on the iPhone and iPad for $0.99. Screenshots after the break.

Most-Convincing Picture of iPhone 4S/5 Yet

What you are looking at on the right could possibly be the next iPhone. Or simply the best fake yet. Which do our instincts tell us?

A French member of the MacRumors onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1205847&highlight=');" target="_blank" href="http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1205847&highlight=">forum posted a picture of what supposedly is an iPhone 4S/5 he or she was, according to their story, given the opportunity to play around with “in the office of a French operator.” Of course the member had to sneak the picture quickly since it is photography of a device that largely remains a mystery, after all. We wonder if the person had to keep both hands within the vehicle as well (yup, a line of Friday iPhone Alley humor).

Besides the picture, there were not many other details that the photographer was interested in sharing. Apparently iPhone 4S/5 is much faster, though. Here’s what he or she had to share:/>

“Picture taken yesterday in the office of a French operator. Believe it or not…/> we were able to see it only 2 minutes, pictures forbidden of course, so, we did our best. I just want to share this with the Mac community, now trust me or not. Rendez-vous in 1-2 months. Absolutely nothing to add. The only thing I can tell you, is that my iPhone 4 looks really slow now!”

Honestly, there is only an air of authenticness that can be attributed to the story and image since this is fairly convincing, even if fake. Better than anything else we have seen at least. Despite that, it seems that there is a 90% chance it is in fact fake.

If you examine the image, it is obviously blurry around the person’s hands but the iPhone is fairly clean. This would be done so that an iPhone 4 can be modified in a image-manipulation app such as Photoshop to look thinner while only requiring a simple edit to give off the appearance it is being held. It seems that this is not really genuine, especially without other cosmetic modifications made to mirror other rumors. (Come on, at least make it more difficult to debunk the picture!) Alas, this is all we’ve got of something that looks like it could be the iPhone 4S/5 even if it’s all smoke-and-mirrors.

Take a closer look below then decide for yourself in the comments:

Roboto App Review – A Beautiful Platformer for iOS

He’s simply learning how to rocketboard, and his dream girl unexpectedly blasts off to a whole different galaxy than the one he’s on. What does he do? Go after her of course! That’s the whole story behind Fenix Fire’s new platformer, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/roboto/id449384735?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/roboto/id449384735?mt=8">Roboto which conveniently is also the name of the robot boy you’ll take control of.

The game is a continuation to the many side-scrolling platformers that are currently on the App Store, in that you’ll have to travel from one end of a level to another while navigating past obstacles and enemies. Tons of different enemies will be introduced throughout the span of the game, as will a whole variety of obstacles and platforms.

You’ll start off with easy levels, which will slowly increase in difficulty ultimately becoming a combination of havoc and fun. Enemies can be shot with energy collected along course of a level, which can also be used for other things such as prolonged jumping (in other words: hovering in the air). Though the energy is not essential for a good score on a level, it is essential for making it past a level. You only have a limited amount of energy, and if it is depleted completely, you will die.href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/roboto-app-review-a-beautiful-platformer-for-ios/attachment/roboto-2011-07-07-00-04-37-80" rel="attachment wp-att-21345">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Roboto-2011-07-07-00-04-37-80-300x168.png" alt="" title="Roboto 2011-07-07 00-04-37-80" width="300" height="168" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-21345" /> There are also three gears located in tough places, usually off of the normal route you’d be taking, which will get you a better score on the level for comparison on Game Center leaderboards and a better result for the game’s level-rating system.

The control scheme is what you would normally see, but rather than two directional arrows on the left side of the screen, you’ve got a joystick. Additionally, two buttons are displayed on the right that control your jumps and shoot your energy gun at enemies. It takes some prodding, but thanks to the control’s adjustable option accessible from the game’s main menu, you can easily set the joystick to be a bit more tight to your liking. Save for the controls and gameplay, Roboto isn’t much like your traditional “run and jump” platformer. Instead, it requires you to master a technique for flying your hoverboard successfully through the hoards of obstacles. Different platforms will require more difficult jumps to land and maneuvering through the levels without falling off (or above, because of challenging gravity changes) can sometimes be hard to accomplish unless you’ve gotten used to the controls.

I don’t know why little Roboto doesn’t just hope on a rocket himself, instead of hover-boarding through 30 levels of in-explainable hazards to supposedly, ultimately get on one, because the trailer (below) shows a line of similar rockets right in front of him. Check out the teaser trailer to become more accustomed to the whole storyline:

width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OjCHAule6vQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Regardless, this all makes up the story and keeps you determined to locate Roboto’s dream girl.

As mentioned above, the game comes fully loaded with a total of 30 levels. These levels are split up into increments of ten, with full-featured boss battles at the last, tenth level. Each of the 3 (10) levels have different environmental themes, made evident by the interactive level-select screen and 3D, moving backgrounds whilst playing. Better yet, the game’s best highlight, it’s colorful, cute artwork, makes playing through these levels much more enjoyable.

I just have the congratulate Fenix Fire’s two man/woman team who have accomplished the impossible for some developers: creating a successful platformer that has potential and is loads of fun to play. Despite its relative shortness, the game is definitely great while it lasts. An absolute worthy purchase for $2.99 (intro price). It literally blows the pants off of other similar games.

Ladies and gentlemen, a fully functional, turbine powered Batmobile — with an iPad built into the dash. Apparently Casey Putsch of Putsch Racing uses it for the avionics system and gps, and it’s a turbine taken from a naval drone helicopter.

EA’s “Back 2 School” Sale Drops Prices On 25 Titles

    style="text-align: center;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Screen-Shot-2011-08-05-at-8.20.39-AM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22925" title="Screen Shot 2011-08-05 at 8.20.39 AM" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Screen-Shot-2011-08-05-at-8.20.39-AM.jpg" alt="" width="507" height="186" />

EA is having one of their every-so-often iOS sales, dropping the price on 25 titles by up to 80%. Their new href="http://www.eamobile.com/back-to-school-sale">Back 2 School sale. Because it’s far too much effort at this hour to link through all of the titles and their new price points, here are some of the more exciting titles: Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Scrabble (worth it when you get the iPhone tile holder app), Battlefield Bad Company 2, Risk, Flight Control, Snood, Monopoly: Here and Now, and Battleship.

Does anyone else find it saddening that a “back to school” sale is spelled “back 2 school”? Kind of defeats the purpose, that one does.

Glmps Catches The Moments Before The Photo

There’s a new photo/video app on the scene, and while it has a very interesting concept, it also has a rather curious bunch of flaws. href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/glmps/id452548312?mt=8">Glmps — pronounced Glimpse (*sigh*-Ed) — is a free iPhone app that runs quietly in the background the entire time, buffering video. When you snap a picture, it actually records a 5-second video run as well, creating a little animation to accompany the photograph.

The concept isn’t a new one, compact cameras have been doing this for years — I remember Casio has had something similar for their high-speed point-and-shoots for some time.

So, what’s the problem? According to href="http://allthingsd.com/20110804/new-iphone-app-aims-to-offer-a-glimpse-beyond-the-still-photo/">AllThingsD, it’s a huge battery drain, you can only upload the files to their service, and there are no privacy settings — that’s right, everything’s public. Hopefully they’ll fix that in the near future.

    The files are embeddable via Flash, and I’ve tried linking one below, but there servers are pretty hosed right now, so they’re not always showing up./> id="Glmps" width="400" height="400" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0">name="quality" value="high" />name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />name="allowfullscreen" value="false" />name="flashvars" value="glmpsPath=&imagePath=&glmpsId=0Xf2OHC7&autoPlay=false" />name="src" value="http://glmps.com/glmpsPlayer/Glmps.007.swf" />id="Glmps" width="400" height="400" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://glmps.com/glmpsPlayer/Glmps.007.swf" quality="high" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="false" flashvars="glmpsPath=&imagePath=&glmpsId=0Xf2OHC7&autoPlay=false" />

iPhone 5 Proximity Sensor Potentially Leaked

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/500-s13118462094e312f41c3d05.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22932" title="500-s13118462094e312f41c3d05" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/500-s13118462094e312f41c3d05.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" />The iPhone 4′s proximity sensor has href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/is-the-iphone-4s-proximity-sensor-causing-trouble/2010/06/25/">caused nothing but trouble, but will the one in the iPhone 5 be any better? SW-Box href="http://www.sw-box.com/Iphone-5-Proximity-Light-Sensor-Flex-Cable.html">say they have the iPhone 5 proximity sensor. I don’t really have the technological background to pick apart if this is legit, but here’s how SW-Box is describing it:

Micro-architectured to stand the tests of time and heat, this flex cable is evidence of solid engineering: dynamic light sensing diodes and high flow terminals allow it to properly pick up proximity for fully featured functionality at a surprisingly low cost. Each cable comes with the necessary adhesive strips so they can be pressed down into the iPhone 5 back plate for easy DIY iPhone 5 fixing.

Unfortunately, they don’t have any iPhone 4 proximity cables on hand to do a quick visual comparison, but I believe it looks href="http://www.diytrade.com/china/4/products/6983572/Wholesale_iPhone_4_Proximity_Sensor_flex_cable_Replacement_for_Apple_iPhone_4.html">a little like this. As you can tell, there’s a definite redesign internally, with some parts being shuffled around.

    [via href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/08/04/alleged_iphone_5_proximity_sensor_part_turns_up_on_importer_site.html">AppleInsider]

    Apple Won’t Make A Low-Cost iPhone Unless It’s A “Category-Killer”

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky recently met with Apple bigwigs COO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer, and came out talking about the possibilities of a cheap iPhone. href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/08/05/rbc_apple_would_only_launch_low_cost_iphone_if_it_had_category_killer_experience.html">As reported by AppleInsider, ”apple’s primary criterion for launching a lower-end iPhone is an innovative, category-killer experience,” said Abramsky.

In other words, it wouldn’t be just to capitalize on an opening in the market, it would have to absolutely dominate it.

I don’t know about you, but I think an inexpensive, new iPhone would be an automatic product killer. The sales numbers of low-cost and free-on-contract Android phones really speak that there is a huge market out there of people who don’t want to pay for a smartphone, which means they have to use Android or WP7 — and I bet most of them would jump on an opportunity to use iOS.

    Discount Calling with Vonage review

Many users are intimately aware of Skype and its ability to offer a cheap VoIP calling service. However, many users are less aware of an interesting rival service named Vonage. The Vonage app is available free in more than 87 iTunes stores.

The Vonage app allows users to make 15-minute calls to people from over 100 countries for between $1 and $2. The rate is the same for both mobile phones and landlines. The system functions primarily through Wi-Fi but users in North America have the added option of using 3G, which could cost more depending on the operator.

Vonage has released a iPhone app that is proving to a be a strong competitor to Skype but both of them different strengths. For example, a 15-minute call to mobile or landline in Spain through Vonage will cost only $0.13. However, Skype’s plan costs only $0.2 cents per minute for landline calls but $0.27 for mobile lines. This is based on a pay-as-you go basis.

While the costs to different type of phones may differ, the best advantage Vonage offers users is simply convenience. Users can pay for calls through their iTunes accounts. This bypasses the need for a special subscription or a Vonage home phone service.
Skype, in comparison requires a full credit account or monthly subscription before making calls. However, both these services are certainly cheaper than traditional mobile operators, which usually charge $1+ per minute for foreign calls made by mobile phones.

If you want the ultimate cost advantage, you will have to comb through the rates each service charge and then decided what you want. For example, if you are calling a particular land or mobile line in a particular country or a particular group of countries, it will be more cost effective to simply choose whichever service provider offers the lowest cost.

Three fantastic games released for the iPhone and iPad

Cut the Rope: Experiments ($0.99) & Experiments HD ($1.99)

This is not an elaborate or coded title. It means what it says. In the sense, all you have to do is cut the rope. The game, which has been developed by ZeptoLab is one of the only games able to rival Angry Birds in terms of popularity.

Once the user cuts the rope, which holds a piece of candy, he/she will be able to witness a cute lizard like creature named Om Nom get at it. The challenge is more difficult than you can imagine, requiring a great deal of concentration and observational skills.

Experiments is a sort of sequel and brings about 75 new levels to tease users and fatten Om Nom. The challenges are sure to get users excited. More exciting is the fact that ZeptoLab has promised a variety of new updates in the near future. Users who have played the original version and loved it should definitely get their hands on Experiments. It is worth every cent!

    Puerto Rico (iPad only $7.99)

While the game traces its origins to the classic board game, the iPad version comes with a great deal of advantages for users. Users will get access to instant tutorials and help articles. In addition, a cool new multiplayer system allows you to pass and play with multiple users. You can play with up to four players.

Like all strategy games, this has a slightly higher learning curve but once you get the hang of it there is a high probability that you will become addicted to it.

The price is the only issue here but after reviewing the amount of effort that has gone into rebooting this classic, one could argue that it is actually reasonable. If you have kids at home and need to pass the time, then this is a really good game to consider.

Final Fantasy: The war of the Lions (Currently only available on the iPhone for $15.99)

Few tactical RPG games can rival the Final Fantasy series. This wonderful game developed by Square Enix features updated leveling and stats features. It also allows users to control multiple characters and face groups of enemies on a turn-based combat system. The battlefield is divided into a grid, to allow full user customization and control.

On the iPhone and iPod Touch, the game works very well. The touch screen controls are also very responsive. The only major issue is the price, which is relatively steep. However, if you want to get your hands on one of the best selling tactical RPG games on the market right now, it is not a bad price after all.
