Daily Tip: How to quickly navigate to the content you want in iTunes

Daily Tip: How to quickly navigate to the content you want in iTunes

Curious how to quickly get to specific section or category of content in iTunes for Windows or Mac? Luckily, Apple has provided convenient drop-down menus for all the major sections like Music, Movies, TV Shows, App Store, Books, Podcasts, iTunes U, and, um… Ping.

In the iTunes Store, you can quickly and easily go from anywhere in the store directly to a particular media type, genre, or special feature by using the top navigation bar. Hovering your pointer over the titles which are always present at the top of the iTunes Store window causes downward pointing triangles to appear next to each media type. Click one and you’ll see a list of helpful links related to that media type which you can use to navigate to what you’re interested in — Jazz in Music perhaps, Action & Adventure in Movies, Comedy in the TV Store, Games in the App Store, and more.

You can use this tip to quickly get more games for your iPhone or iPad, or to jump right to the technology section in podcasts for iPhone Live, iPad Live, and all our other fine shows.

Kadamedia has released their new iPhone game, Zombies in Flight.

A Game With Balls now available for iPhone, iPad

The iPhone and iPad strategy game, A Game With Balls, by Edward DiNola, has been updated with Twitter, Facebook, and Game Center integration.

Balls rain from the sky. In a chaotic frenzy you attempt to destroy them to no avail. You resign to your fate. At the last moment your mind becomes clear and you begin to… understand. Why destroy them? Why not brush them aside, effortlessly? You transcend, a mystical shield arises from inside. Now a tap of your finger can solve anything…

I’ve spent a little time with A Game With Balls and I enjoy it. I’m not a fan of games that require tilting of the device, so having the option between touch and tilt is greatly welcomed.

A Game With Balls is available on the iPhone and iPad for $0.99. Screenshots after the break.

Patent wars merely leveling the playing field against Google Android “dumping”?

Patent wars merely leveling the playing field against Google Android "dumping"?

Paul Thurrott of Windows Super Site is never one to let a good piece of anti-Apple link bait go by, but this time he’s turned his attention towards Google’s Android, and how Google “dumping” it on the market for free could be a greater anticompetitive act than Microsoft or Apple patent litigation.

Arguably, by “dumping” Android in the market at no cost, Google–which has unlimited cash and can afford to do such a thing–is behaving in an anticompetitive fashion. In fact, one could argue that Google is using its dominance in search advertising to unfairly gain entry into another market by giving that new product, Android, away for free. Does this remind you of any famous antitrust case?

From which, 10 years later, Microsoft is arguably still reeling. Thurrott’s point, and it’s worth noting, is that no one is innocent here.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball raises a similar point.

Google supporters claim that Google only wants to use patents defensively. But what exactly does Google need to defend against, if not actual patents Android actually violates? How is Google’s argument here different than simply demanding that Apple, Microsoft, Oracle, et al should simply sit back and let Google do whatever it wants with Android, regardless of the patents they hold? And, let’s not forget, give Android away for free.

Which Gruber boils down to hypocrisy, a theme increasingly present in Google coverage.

Which is not to say Google is doing anything different than any other public company seeing to it’s own self-interests (and I’ll repeat — any company sufficiently large is indistinguishable from evil). It’s just that Google feels so smug about it right now, which is ironic given smugness is usually a quality ascribed to Apple.

In Apple’s case, the smugness comes from their sense that they know better than us, that they have better taste, and that we’ll take what they tell us to take. In Google’s case, however, the smugness now seems to come from a feeling that they think we’re too dumb to see the hypocrisy. It’s as if they think they can shout “open” and “free” and not actually be open or free (or be open and free on the backs of manufacturers and developers), and everyone from FOSS faithful to Google fanatics will rally to support them, no questions asked. It’s as if they think they can shout “un-fair” and “anti-competitive” when faced with trademark and patent litigation from authors and rivals, while continuing to file their own trademarks and patents.

But user trust is a currency and a finite one. You can’t spend more than you earn. It’s not our job to blindly support companies; it’s their job to support us.

That’s a lesson Apple’s learned painfully with everything from MobileMe to Steve Jobs’ health to location-gate and antenna-gate. It will be interesting to see how Google learns it and addresses it.

Another probably fake iPhone 5 spy shot

Also probably not the iPhone 5

A MacRumors forum member going by the handle guigsh posted the above photo(shop?!) in their forums this morning, claiming it was a spy shot of iPhone 5 taken in the office of a French operator. While we’ve seen spy shots of HP webOS devices under similar circumstances in the past, this one doesn’t look much more believable than those [Chinese iClones we've been seeing lately].

A follow-up post from the thread author gives us the following information:

we were able to see it only 2 minutes, pictures forbidden of course, so, we did our best. I just want to share this with the mac community, now trust me or not. Rendez-vous in 1-2 months

No doubt we’ll see tons more leaks, and tons more fakes before Steve Jobs holds up the real deal this fall. In the meantime, this one is making the blog rounds so take it for what it’s worth — a very large grain of salt. I’m personally not convinced in the least.

Your turn. Real, fake, or really fake?

Today’s iOS Game Deals Have A Puzzling Bent

    href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.yytcxlsq.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22908" title="mzl.yytcxlsq.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.yytcxlsq.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

Not only has this morning seenhref="http://www.everythingicafe.com/a-bevy-of-game-sequels-hit-the-app-store/2011/08/04/"> more titles released on the app store than you can shake a stick at, a number of absolutely great titles have been marked down.

Chinese Rumors Point To 4G-LTE iPhone 5, “Simplified iPhone 4″

Two new entries in the neverending rumor mill about the next generation of iPhone. Analyst Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/08/03/china_telecom_predicted_to_sell_iphone_5_simplified_iphone_4_in_oct_.html">sent out a note to investors saying that China Telecom would stock the iPhone 5 and a “simplified iPhone 4″ in October. He called the deal imminent, and the ”more economical version” of the iPhone 4 was designed to help Apple pick up more market share in China.

Meanwhile, href="http://www.gizchina.com/2011/08/04/china-mobile-confirms-gen-iphone-4g/">GizChina is reporting (via href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/04/china-mobile-claims-a-4g-td-lte-deal-with-apple-for-next-iphone/">9to5) that China Mobile will bring 4G LTE to the iPhone 5:

China Mobile claims that it has reached an agreement with Apple to bring to bring its 4th generation TD-LTE mobile data connection to the next generation iPhone. The claim isn’t exactly new news as it was originally reported back in May, and doesn’t specify which model of iPhone it will be in, but could hint at the next generation iPhone actually being an iPhone 4S type device, with updated 4G capabilities, rather than a totally new iPhone 5 design.

The general feeling in the techsphere is that Apple wasn’t going to go with 4G for this generation of iPhone due to it being a relatively new technology — but given that this iPhone release has been pushed back substantially from when we all thought it would be announced, maybe that’s given Apple enough time to iron out the kinks.

    Rumor: iPhone 5 Photos Leaked?

A forum poster over at href="http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=13112497#post13112497">MacRumors has included a Mr.Blurrycam® shot that he’s claiming is the iPhone 5. The member joined today and has guigsy, has a total of 3 posts. Guigsy claims the photo was taken in the office of a French operator and that he had only two minutes with it.

    class="wp-caption-text">Is this the iPhone 5?

This could be a fake. Clearly there is some Photoshop work in play, but it’s a matter of how much? What say you? Think this is the real deal or is someone having some Photoshop fun at everyones expense?

AT&T To Kick Jailbroken Tetherers Off Unlimited Data

    href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/tetheriphone.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2726" title="tetheriphone" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/tetheriphone.jpg" alt="" width="350" height="274" />

Remember how you got grandfathered in with your unlimited data when AT&T went tiered? Well, if you’re the type to jailbreak and tether, it looks like AT&T might be involuntarily forcing you to off your plan. href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/04/jailbreak-hotspot-ers-august-11th-att-will-move-you-to-a-tiered-data-plan-involuntarily">9to5Mac is reporting that after August 11th, if you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan and are using it with a non-AT&T (read: jailbroken) tethering setup, AT&T will automatically force you into their tiered data instead. A reader wrote them and said:

I was just informed that as of Thursday August 11th 2011, if you use MyWi or any tethering on the phone or using the phone as a modem, AT&T will automatically change ur unlimited plan to a 2Gb tethering plan for 45 dollars without the customers consent. This is for those who received emails or texts about the use of tethering without an AT&T tethering plan.

AT&T has confirmed this is happening, and will send out official notification shortly.

This sort of thing I find incredibly frustrating. If you payed for unlimited data, why does AT&T care if it comes directly from your phone, or from your computer via your phone? It’s still excruciatingly slow regardless, and it doesn’t suck down data any faster because you’re tethered.

What do our readers think? Is this a fair move by AT&T, or abusive to their customers?

Cut the Rope: Experiments for iPhone, iPad now available

The widely popular iPhone and iPad puzzle game, Cut the Rope, now has a sequel: Cut the Rope: Experiments. Two of the new feature is a rope gun and suction cup.

What on earth is Om Nom?! That’s what millions of fans of the widely acclaimed game, Cut the Rope, have been asking about the cute little monster who eats candy like its his job!

That same question has a mad (but not bad) scientist studying the little creature that mysteriously arrived outside his house. Intrigued by Om Nom’s insatiable appetite for sweets, the Professor puts him through a series of experiments in this all-new game, a follow-up to one of the most original and fun-filled games on the App Store.

Of all the different types of games out there, puzzle games are my favorite and Cut the Rope is one of my favorite puzzle games. Needless to say, I’m excited about Cut the Rope: Experiments!

Cut the Rope: Experiments is available on the iPhone for $0.99 and on the iPad for $1.99. Screenshots and video after the break.

Best Cinematic Trailer for an iOS Game

Trailers are on of the best marketing tactics for a game’s development. A developer certainly doesn’t want to put out a trailer that bores the potential buyers, but instead maybe humors them or entices with some cliffhangers and intense gameplay. What makes this trailer, that I’m about to show you, so good is the fact that it has personality and despite it not showing any actual gameplay footage, I’m sure the developer has hooked some people that will buy the game regardless of its genre. Check it out below.

The application being so cleverly and humorously showcased below, is called Pigs in Trees – Pesky Peckers. Even though it seems to be trying to feed off of the birds vs. pigs popularity, it certainly has won me more. And it’s purely ironic how the pigs are living in the trees and the birds are not. But, let me not say anything more — check out the epic, cinematic trailer out for yourself:

    width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fxPhPMoBSMY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Other than the, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6hUTC1Edyo&feature=player_embedded');" target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6hUTC1Edyo&feature=player_embedded">Fruit Ninja trailer this has got to be one of the best ones I’ve seen in recent time.

There’s an old cliche that says, “All’s well that ends well”, so whatever those pigs have to do to get the pesky birds out of their tree, literally, is fine with me. and is what’s going to make the game. We’ve yet to see what the game is exactly about, other than the obvious task imposed on you of getting rid of the birds – it should be pretty good, so, that said, we’ll keep you posted on any future developments. Hey, who knows, maybe this will also turn out to become a short web-cartoon in the near future that features the pig as the main character constantly trying to sabotage the birds and failing just as often…

Oh, and you just have to admire the graphical style the designer has resorted to. Flat-bellied pigs, vibrant colors and bold text that I’m a pure sucker for!

    Can RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry line-up hold off iPhone 5?

We’re likely only a month or two away from Apple announcing iPhone 5 but RIM is already launching their 2011 BlackBerry lineup, including the first BlackBerry Bold with a touch screen, and not one but two BlackBerry Torches — an update to the original slider and new, Storm-replacing, touch screen only slab.

They’ve got higher resolution screens, NFC options, voice, search, GPU-enhanced Liquid Graphics fluidity, BBM 6, and BlackBerry OS 7. But are they enough to hold off the coming iPhone 5 onslaught?

The Best Applications for All of Your Social Needs

It helps to know what applications you can rely on for your social needs, especially if you’re an avid tweeter, Facebook addict or have any other favorite social website that you have trouble quitting. To make your social life easier, I’ve taken the time to highlight, in some cases, the best applications for doing any of the following: instant messaging, tweeting, updating your Google+, Facebook (chat as well), Yahoo chat, phone calls utilizing internet of 3G, and texting.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/720439" rel="attachment wp-att-21284">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/720439.png" alt="" title="720439" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21284" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/id291720439');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id291720439">BeejiveIM with Push [4.99]/> Beejive is the honey to your soul or the peanut butter to your jelly, analogous to your IMing needs. Literally, the application is one of the most productive applications I’ve seen on the App Store thus far after me owning an iOS device for multiple years now. The application never fails to satisfy, in that if allows you to chat from multiple social services including AIM, iChat, Facebook Chat, MySpace chat, Jabber, Google’s chatting services and technically text through AIM and such. As you can tell, it appeals to the new boys and the old schoolers by supporting the new chatting services as well as the some of the older, less popular ones…Anyways, the user-interface is absolutely, positively friendly, with all of your chats displayed in an organized list along with easily navigable menus. Plus, the application has a sweet feature that allows you to enable email notifications and also has push notifications cleverly integrated. If you like IMing, look no further than this solution from Beejive Inc. The combination of instant messaging anywhere at anytime and so many social networks is a dominant forte that stacks Beejive much higher than other mobile and desktop IM clients. It provides a wonderful way of chatting from multiple websites, all in one application and for only $4.99.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/ebuddy" rel="attachment wp-att-21285">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ebuddy.png" alt="" title="ebuddy" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21285" />href="">eBuddy Messenger onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/ebuddy-pro-messenger/id336346413?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ebuddy-pro-messenger/id336346413?mt=8">[Pro/onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/ebuddy-messenger/id320087242?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ebuddy-messenger/id320087242?mt=8">Free]/> If you thought Beejive was cool, wait until you see what is provided by eBuddy, also an application devoted solely to instant messaging. For free (pro version as well), you get the ability to chat from multiple social networks: AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Google chatting, MySpace and more. It’s got an aesthetically-pleasing way of displaying all of your contacts, which shows whether they’re online or offline. And, there’s no need to download a separate emoji application from the App Store, considering eBuddy comes with a full tray of sprites fully integrated.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/meebo" rel="attachment wp-att-21287">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/meebo.png" alt="" title="meebo" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21287" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/meebo/id351727311?mt=8#');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/meebo/id351727311?mt=8#">Meebo [Free]/> If you’ve ever used Meebo for your computer, you know what I’m talking about when I say the service provides a clean, quick, astonishingly efficient way of chatting from multiple networks all in one play; the same carries over to the iOS version of the application. It too allows you to chat from all of the regular networks (Facebook. MySpace, AIM, etc.) but also with a ton, ton more and push notifications to top it off.

I previously posted my href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-8-best-twitter-applications-for-ios?">top 8, native Twitter applications. So instead of retyping everything I had there, I’ll just link you over while also giving you an overview of my top 3.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-8-best-twitter-applications-for-ios/attachment/tweetbot-2" rel="attachment wp-att-19216">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tweetbot1.png" alt="" title="tweetbot" width="88" height="125" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-19216" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/id428851691?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id428851691?mt=8">Tweetbot [$1.99]/> This is undoubtedly my most favorite Twitter client for the iPhone. If you’re ever using Tweetbot, you’re most likely using it for it’s user-friendly interface. Navigating through your Twitter profile has never been easier: all of your tweet, your messages, your info and more can be found with one click from anywhere in the application, thanks to the dock. Plus, the whole application is attractive, with a modern look and feel and sound effects that, when played, are always, strangely satisfying. The application will run you $1.99, though it does its job fantastically and correctly utilizes the iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s capacitive touchscreen.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-8-best-twitter-applications-for-ios/attachment/twitbird" rel="attachment wp-att-19255">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/twitbird.png" alt="" title="twitbird" width="88" height="185" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-19255" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitbird-free-for-twitter/id352891124?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitbird-free-for-twitter/id352891124?mt=8">Twitbird [Freeonclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitbird-premium/id307876729?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitbird-premium/id307876729?mt=8">$1.99 for Premium, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitbird-pro-for-twitter/id317777108?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitbird-pro-for-twitter/id317777108?mt=8">$2.99 for Pro]/> TwitBird could easily be the best Twitter application for iOS and is certainly very near the top. I couldn’t really find any cons with it, so I’ll just list the pros, which there are many. When you first boot up the application, you’ll be faced with a navigation page which displays everything you’d want to see, each beside a polished little icon. Here you can access new tweets, mentions, DMs, favorite tweets, your own tweets and a variety of tools that will be useful to stay organized. These will allow you do do a plethora of different things, very much alike the desktop version of Twitter. The application comes built in with 4 different themes that will affect the application’s layout. One will even make the navigation page exactly like your iDevice’s springboard, by blowing up the little icons, arranging them in three rows of three to a page, and giving you the ability to move icons around. If you want a flawless Twitter client that easily lets you personalize it, TwitBird is your solution.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-8-best-twitter-applications-for-ios/attachment/official-twitter" rel="attachment wp-att-19177">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/official-twitter.png" alt="" title="official twitter" width="86" height="87" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-19177" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitter/id333903271?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitter/id333903271?mt=8">Twitter [Free]/> The official Twitter application for iOS was introduced as a revamped version of Tweetie, once the social industry giant bought out its developer. It’s got a polished user-interface and a unique system that involves a series of swiping. If you fancy an application that sticks to its job, and does nothing extra, Twitter’s official iOS application is definitely for you.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/face" rel="attachment wp-att-21288">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/face.png" alt="" title="facebook" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21288" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/facebook/id284882215?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/facebook/id284882215?mt=8">Facebook [Free]/> If you haven’t heard of the Facebook application, the official one anyways, then that’s pretty sad. Not because it’s an awesome application, but since it’s literally the only application that lets you do what you need to do – in fact, it’s really not an awesome application. It’s the exact opposite: a lackluster, bug-plagued, crashy version of the desktop website you all love. I wouldn’t recommend the application, but it’s really the only way you’ll get what needs to be done, done, from your iOS device. So really, the application contradicts Apple’s “there’s an app for that” since there’s really no app for doing everything-Facebook unless you really consider the official app as an application at all, which I do not. #dissed

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/beejivefacebook" rel="attachment wp-att-21289">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/beejivefacebook.png" alt="" title="beejivefacebook" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21289" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/beejiveim-for-facebook-chat/id403667925?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/beejiveim-for-facebook-chat/id403667925?mt=8">BeejiveIM for Facebook [Free]/> There aren’t really any noticed applications, if any at all, that let you do everything you could normally do on Facebook save for chatting. One of the better ones, excluding the applications above providing support for multiple networks, is BeejiveIM for Facebook, a user-friendly client that makes Facebook chatting easier. So now you don’t have to be chatting from an application you can’t rely on to sustain one whole chat (official Facebook app), but can instead use one that works extremely well. If you’re looking for an IM client, and are not looking for one that serves multiple purposes (as above) then pick up this free one.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/googleplus" rel="attachment wp-att-21290">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/googleplus.png" alt="" title="googleplus" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21290" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/gb/app/google/id447119634?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/google/id447119634?mt=8">Google+ [Free]/> Google+ is fairly new, but also a huge network already meaning it wouldn’t be completely ethical to not release an iPhone application (what’s up with you guys Facebook?). There’s an application serving the purpose of updating your feed and checking your circles already, and it’s straight from Google which means it’s great. Unfortunately, it’s currently not available for the iPod Touch and onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad, and instead only available for iPhone users, meaning the 3GS isn’t yet not paid attention to.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/beejivegoogle" rel="attachment wp-att-21291">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/beejivegoogle.png" alt="" title="beejivegoogle" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21291" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/beejiveim-for-gtalk/id422095498?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/beejiveim-for-gtalk/id422095498?mt=8">BeejivIM for GTalk [Free]/> Yup, the folks over at Beejive Inc. are really good as all of these productivity applications. It’s efficient, ideal and great for chatting using Google’s chat service. Best of all, especially, excluding the fact that it’s from Beejive, it’s absolutely free. So there’s no penalty for not liking it.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/yahoomessenger" rel="attachment wp-att-21292">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/yahoomessenger.png" alt="" title="yahoomessenger" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21292" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/app/yahoo-messenger/id309219097?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/yahoo-messenger/id309219097?mt=8">Yahoo Messenger/> The ultimate application for chatting through Yahoo!’s chatting services, is without doubt their official endeavor currently on the App Store. The application’s interface simply breathes style, to say the least. Using the application, you can chat, send free SMS and much more. Certainly something to include in your utilities folder.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/skype" rel="attachment wp-att-21293">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/skype.png" alt="" title="skype" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21293" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/skype/id304878510?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skype/id304878510?mt=8">Skype [Free]/> The best iPhone application for chatting (within its own service), video calling and phone calling is, hands-down, Skype. The mobile version of the widely acclaimed desktop service is extremely reliable and provides a wonderful way to video chat with friends, IM within its own instant messaging service and call other phones using a cheap-for-you system. Video calls haven’t ever dropped for me, going on to prove that it’s simply amazing; easily navigable, reliable and highly efficient for any of the aforementioned purposes.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/palringo" rel="attachment wp-att-21294">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/palringo.png" alt="" title="palringo" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21294" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/app/palringo-instant-messenger/id286274367?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/palringo-instant-messenger/id286274367?mt=8">Palringo [Free]/> Not only does this application support chatting across multiple networks, but it also provides users with the option to send, absolutely free, text messages to other phones. A great solution for texting.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/the-best-applications-for-all-of-your-social-needs/attachment/textfree" rel="attachment wp-att-21295">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/textfree.png" alt="" title="textfree" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-21295" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/textfree-with-voice/id399355755?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textfree-with-voice/id399355755?mt=8">Textfree with Voice [Free]/> This application is a beast among beasts. Boasting a free price tag, it allows you to text for free from within its own interface – you’ll be assigned a Textfree number, which can also be used for free voice calls. Plus, if you have this application, you can forget Beejive’s solution to Facebook chatting, considering Textfree also has Facebook’s chat integrated.

So, that’s it for now. Did we miss anything? Any applications that fit extremely well into the above categories? If so, let us know in the comments. I’ve been trying to figure out, for the past few days, which productivity applications I should keep and which ones I should junk; because Apple only allows 12 applications into a folder and having two folders for one application isn’t, in my honest opinion, too ideal as an example of organization.

Some Apps Rolling Out iOS 5 Compatibility

style="text-align: left;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Screen-Shot-2011-08-04-at-9.16.58-AM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22913" title="Screen Shot 2011-08-04 at 9.16.58 AM" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Screen-Shot-2011-08-04-at-9.16.58-AM.jpg" alt="" width="583" height="109" />href="http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-already-approving-app-updates-for-ios-5-%E2%80%94-launch-next-month/107598">Cult of Mac has spotted two apps that have already rolled out updates to make them compatible with iOS 5. Both Camera+ and Mashable! have recently updated their apps, and should now work with the unreleased version of iOS. While Mashable! was completely brazen in announcing this in the changelog, Camera+ just said:

Compatibility with that upcoming OS That Must Not Be Named.

Unless Lord Voldemort is suddenly in the programming business, that has to mean iOS 5.

The official release date of iOS 5 is merely “Fall”, which is an incredibly nebulous time period. These updates hint that we might get closer to the final release, probably at some point in September.

iPhone 5, budget iPhone 4 rumored for China Telecom

Sohu.com has a report up saying China Telecom, China’s third largest mobile carrier, will not only be fielding the iPhone this year, but two new iPhones. We’re fairly sure an iPhone 5 is coming this fall, and we’ve heard for a while now an iPhone nano/budget iPhone might be coming with it. (Two new iPhones in one year? I’ll have to call Phil and ask how to deal with that many reviews!)

“According to Sohu.com, China Telecom will offer two types of iPhone that include the iPhone 5 and a ‘simplified iPhone 4,’” says White. “Essentially, this potential ‘simplified iPhone 4′ would be a more economical version of iPhone to target a broader customer base in developing countries such as China, allowing for an expanded market opportunity.”

Apple already owns 66% of mobile profits with one fairly high-end phone. If they get the second, more economical phone (on carriers with plans to keep those costs down), especially for new smartphone adopters and emerging markets, they could push that already astronomical figure even higher.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions now available in the App Store

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is now finally available in the App Store. If you’re into role playing games, this is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year!

    • The complex tactical game can be effortlessly and intuitively controlled by simply tapping units and menus. Gone is the old method of switching fixed map views – you can now rotate, move and change the size of maps as you please by sliding and pinching.

    • Loading times have been improved to get you into the action quicker than ever. What’s more, you can even skip certain cut scenes.

    • Graphics have been adapted for optimal performance on iPhone/iPod touch screens.

    • Upcoming scheduled updates: Facility to fast-forward battle scenes and skip cut scenes.

The game is designed for the iPhone and iPod touch with support for iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3rd generation and later devices. For the best experience, play on iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation or later devices. An iPad specific version will be released in the fall.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is available on the iPhone for $15.99. Screenshots after the break.

Poll: Which social networks do you use regularly?

Facebook is the most popular app on the iPhone and we’ve often said Twitter and iOS go together like chocolate and peanut butter. But social networks rise and fall. Remember MySpace, Jaiku, Buzz… Friendster? And hey, how about Google+ now that it’s expanding beyond the techie early adopters, or LinkedIn which seems to always hover neither here nor there.

Which social networks do you use regularly? Let us know in the poll up top and give us the details, including which one(s) you prefer, how often you use them, — and your profile link(s) if you feel especially social about it — in the comments below.

Mac OS and iOS to Merge Into a Unified Operating System?

Apple may be ready to switch to a single, unified operating system that powers all of its computing products if Jeffries analyst Peter Misek is to be believed. To be released next year, the A6 system-in-a-chip with a new quad-core processor may apparently be powerful enough for mobile tasks along with more advanced personal computer usage. The A6 may mark the first time that the same chip is featured within a Mac system and mobile devices either in conjunction with more advanced Intel processors or to replace them. Misek points towards less-demanding Mac systems exclusively featuring the A6, although he does not say that outright.

A fault in the ARM processor lineup that would be used within the A6, and that has been utilized within the A4 and A5 that the iOS devices utilize, would be that they are only 32-bit, meaning that they cannot take advantage of more modern processor management. It is not until 2016 that 64-bit ARM processors are set to make their way into the market. However, once that does happen Apple’s process of unifying iOS and Mac OS would reportedly be finished.

The current separation between iOS devices and Mac systems is more than justified. After all, they both have different interfaces best suit for their distinct control methods. It may be more so the underlying elements powering the operating system that become unified, though the report does not specifically mention whether they will become one-in-the-same or simply more alike.

Mac OS X Lion, an update released last month for Mac systems, brings some elements of iOS’s interface design to the platform. That includes a page-based app library, full-screen apps, as well as a focus on multi-touch gestures. An App Store for Mac was also recently released following the App Store’s success on the iPhone and onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad.

Misek states that the merger would be done so that iCloud can become better-integrated, />

“Users want to be able to pick up any iPhone, iPad, or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used. We believe this will be difficult to implement if iOS and OS X are kept separate.”

We do not fully trust his explanation regarding that since file management across two platforms is not a relatively difficult task. Apple seems to have designed the operating systems well enough so that they can have unified features such as iCloud provides. In fact, at the core of iOS is Mac OS X.

I would be more compelled to see if this leads to product combinations – a iMacPad Air, anybody?

A Bevy Of Game Sequels Hit The App Store

For some reason, today seems to be a day in which all sorts of sequels to well-loved titles have hit the app store.

For people who love both Glee and rhythm games, href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/tap-tap-glee/id449960771?mt=8">Tap Tap Glee is a free download, with up to 50 tracks available through in-app purchase. It comes bundled with ”Hell To The No” and daily free mystery tracks to play — plus behind the scenes footage from Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.

EA’s second game in the Shift franchise has hit both href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/shift-2-unleashed/id416250286?mt=8">iPhone and href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/shift-2-unleashed-for-ipad/id425578351?mt=8">iPad for $2.99 each. With three new locations and 40 cars, I’m sure all the petrolheads will love it.

As discussed href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/final-fantasy-tactics-gets-ios-release-this-week-for-a-price/2011/08/02/">earlier this week, Final Fantasy Tactics has made its app store debut with a rather stiff href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/final-fantasy-tactics-the/id446760220?mt=8">$15.99 asking price. It’s a strategy RPG classic, but that’s still a lot to ask for a very old game.

Google updates Gmail web app with Retina display support and pull down to refresh

Google has updated its web app for Gmail with the inclusion of pull down to refresh, new transitions and updated icons to take advantage of the Retina display of the iPhone 4.

    • You can now pull down to refresh your message list and conversation on all iOS devices. To refresh, simply touch the message list, drag downwards and release.

    • For those of you using Gmail for mobile on an iPhone 4 Retina display, the icons and graphics are now at a higher resolution, making Gmail for mobile sharper.

    • When you tap on a conversation, tap back to the inbox, go to the menu or go back, the view will slide left or right. This new transition animation is a quick, small indication that makes the view change feel smoother.

If you do use the Gmail web app for your mail, make sure to take a look at the new features. I personally never use the Web app and have all my mail pushed using Gmail and its Exchange Server functionality.
