Sales estimates for the iPhone and iPad rise

Despite the fear of recession, tech firms like Apple are thriving. In fact, if you want to invest its Apple’s stocks maybe more foolproof than gold itself (be careful of the gold bubble). Apple has been playing it safe by providing conservative estimates of its performance but as the fourth quarter draws to an end, analysts across the board are racing to raise their estimates.

The following are some of the examples of major market research analysts and their revisions of the estimates

Overall, while Apple can boast about the increase in sales of all its major product lines, only the iPhone and iPad are doing extremely well. The Macs are increasingly being pushed to the sidelines. The majority of the company’s profits are now heavily focused on the iPhone and iPad but there is always the danger that if Apple because too dependent on these devices, it may stumble in the future. Even as it readies to launch the iPhone 5, its rivals are planning to release very more powerful and sophisticated phones. Fortunately, Apple has sensibly expanded its product range, especially in terms of services.

Rumor: iOS Beta 8 Coming Friday, GM On Following Friday

BGR today is reporting that “trusted sources” have informed them that iOS 5 beta 8 will be released on this Friday. The golden master label, associated with the final shipping OS, will be completed by the following Friday or September 23rd. BGR uses these reports to calculate the iPhone 5, complete with iOS 5, will be on schedule for an October release.

Makes sense to us. We’ve seen beta releases on Friday’s and at some point GM has to be achieved if Apple continues with the reported October release date timeframe for the iPhone 5.

Source: href="http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/13/ios-5-beta-8-coming-this-friday-gm-on-the-23rd-iphone-5-launch-early-october-as-rumored/">BGR

Rumor: iOS 5 Around October 10?

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/rumor-ios-beta-8-coming-friday-gm-on-following-friday/2011/09/13/">Building up from other rumors we’ve heard today comes a new report by way of href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/09/13/applecare_preparations_hint_at_ios_5_0_release_around_oct_10.html">AppleInsider. Their source at AppleCare informs them that AppleCare staff have been told to brace for a massive load of iOS related inquiries beginning Monday October 10. Their apparently expecting 8x as many help calls as normal, focussed primarily on iOS. The most likely conclusion to draw from this is that on or near October 10th is when iOS 5 will head out.

AppleInsider is up front in admitting that they’re not 100% sure about the source who provided them this information, but it doesn’t seem out of the question in terms of when we could expect to see iOS 5 land for most users.

This would doubtless be in advance of the iPhone 5 release, if true.

iOS 5 beta 8 coming Friday, GM coming September 23, iPhone still on track for early October?

iOS 5 beta 8 coming Friday, GM coming September 28, iPhone still on track for early October?

Boy Genius says, according to their trusted sources, iOS 5 beta 8 will be released this Friday, September 16, followed by the gold master (GM) on September 23, paving the way for an early October release just like TiPb heard a while back.

If September 28 is indeed the go date for the GM seed, will Apple hold their special fall event on or around that date? Apple has often used events to announce both first beta and GM seed releases in the past, and it would leave a week or two for developers to hammer on it before an iPhone 5 release on October 7 or October 14.

We’ll have to wait for Apple to send out invitations to know for sure.

Gamestop Confirms They Want Your iOS Devices

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/gamestop-to-carry-ios-devices/2011/09/06/">class="alignnone" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Screen-Shot-2011-09-06-at-8.26.12-AM.jpg" alt="" width="556" height="137" />

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/gamestop-to-carry-ios-devices/2011/09/06/">Confirming a report from earlier this month, Gamestop has issued a release saying they want to buy your old iPhones, iPods and iPads. Under a program dubbed “href="http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/itrade/default.aspx">iTrades“, Gamestop will take any generation iPod Nano, Shuffle, Mini, Touch, iPhone or iPad.

Keep in mind if you’re interested in doing this that Gamestop is notorious for substantially undervaluing everything under the sun, and you’ll end up with a small fraction of what your gadget is really worth. As commenter href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/gamestop-to-carry-ios-devices/2011/09/06/#comment-85559">Outspoken said last week, they were only offering $200 in-store credit for an iPad 2.

Yeah, you’d be better off going for Craigslist.

HTC Prez Sez “iPhones Are Not That Cool Anymore”

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Simps010.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23605" title="Simps010" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Simps010.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="300" />HTC America’s acting president Martin Fichter has managed to make a statement so baffling that the very mind itself boggles. href="http://www.geekwire.com/2011/htc-boss-windows-phone-7-patents-iphones-cool-anymore">As GeekWire reports, Fichter talked at the Mobile Future Forward conference, and had this to say about “cool” phones:

“I brought my daughter back to college — she’s down in Portland at Reed — and I talked to a few of the kids on her floor. And none of them has an iPhone because they told me: ‘My dad has an iPhone.’ There’s an interesting thing that’s going on in the market. The iPhone becomes a little less cool than it was. They were carrying HTCs. They were carrying Samsungs. They were even carrying some Chinese manufacture’s devices. If you look at a college campus, Mac Book Airs are cool. iPhones are not that cool anymore. We here are using iPhones, but our kids don’t find them that cool anymore.”

Huh, really? Because last time I looked, iPhones and iPod Touches were still the device of choice among high school and college kids, helped along by Apple’s aggressive and annual back-to-school sales. And are you honestly telling me that any Android device out there has the instant recognizability and cachet that the iPhone does? Sorry Fichter, not buying it.

NBC, TNT, TBS All Bring Streaming Full Episodes To iOS

Ready to get your TV on? Three major networks have updated or released apps over the last week to bring full length streaming episodes to iOS devices. href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/12/nbc-tnt-and-tbs-bring-full-length-tv-episodes-to-ios-devices/">As spotted by MacRumors, NBC last week href="http://www.nbcumv.com/mediavillage/networks/nbcentertainment/pressreleases?pr=contents/press-releases/2011/09/09/nbcexpandsthenb1315599542834.xml">announced their app would be overhauled and href="http://appshopper.com/entertainment/nbc">now offers streaming full episodes to viewers.

They’re not the only ones, two major Turner stations have done likewise, and the href="http://appshopper.com/entertainment/tnt">TNT href="http://appshopper.com/entertainment/tnt-for-ipad">and href="http://appshopper.com/entertainment/tbs">TBS href="http://appshopper.com/entertainment/tbs-for-ipad">apps for iPad and iPhone will now let you watch full episodes — but they require you to login via your cable provider. If you’re a customer of Comcast, Cox, The Dish Network, SuddenLink, Verizon, AT&T U-Verse, DirecTV and Optimum you should be able to watch the videos for free.

Luckily anyone can watch the NBC episodes, so who’s up for some 30 Rock?

Dolphin Browser HD now available for iPad

Hot on the heels of last month’s Dolphin Browser for iPhone release, we now have Dolphin Browser HD. As is always the case with browser apps, Dolphin has to use the built-in iOS web view for rendering pages, so it has the same HTML, CSS, and JavaScript engine as Safari, but they do a good job of differentiating themselves via their interface and features.

Dolphin Browser is available on the iPad for free. Anyone saying goodbye to Safari?

Acting president of HTC America claims the iPhone is no longer cool

Martin Fichter, the acting president of HTC America has been talking at the Mobile Future Forward conference in Seattle. He claims that college kids no longer find the iPhone to be cool. The information that he shares is not exactly based on hard facts; he talked with a few of the kids on his daughter’s floor and came to this rather strange conclusion!

“Apple is innovating. Samsung is innovating. We are innovating. Everybody is innovating. And everybody is doing different things for the end consumers. I brought my daughter back to college — she’s down in Portland at Reed — and I talked to a few of the kids on her floor.

I discussed this at length with my 12 year old daughter this morning and she sort of agreed with the points being made. Blackberry appears to be the chosen platform at her school although she did say that iPhones were still very  highly desired. The cost and delicate nature of an iPhone does appear to deter many parents from providing them to their kids!

What do you think? Is the iPhone losing the coolness factor with the younger generation?
