Modern Warfare 3 app allows customized Loadout

One of the most popular gaming titles in history, Modern Warfare 3, is now creating a new buzz with plans to launch an app that allows users to customize their combat gear while not on the console or PC. The game is already noted for its very realistic combat experience featuring numerous classes of soldiers, weapons, vehicles and combat maneuvers. The graphics that go into the game are nothing short of amazing but what really attracts gamers is the multiplayer feature, which is allows teams to go at each other with full force. Dedicated gamers spend hours honing their skills and upgrading their gear to become the deadliest virtual warriors.

However, up until now, gamers could only modify their equipment while at the computer or console. Thus, ideas that pop into your head while commuting, eating out or chatting with your friends are at the mercy of your short-term memory. Fortunately, the proposed app is meant to fix that problem, permanently. As a result, gamers can expect to start their games with their guns blazing and with an extra edge over other competitors. The mobile apps for the iPhone and Android devices will feature a similar login mechanism as the one found in the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms. The standardization of the key features makes this app more user-friendly.

The content available will depend on the subscription you have. Free subscribers will get a standard set of features while “Elite” subscribers will get access to a wider range of content. Overall, this whole process is interesting because it entails staying connected to a game at all time. This maybe a sign of things to come. Soon, we may be able to create strategic moves, change our weapons and fine-tune every detail of the game before going into instant action. Imagine, if you have could plan raids or set up of firing spots via your iPhone, share them with your friends and then login with all the details seamlessly updated on your map? Now that would be extreme.

SFPD Launches Probe Into iPhone Investigation

The ongoing bewilderment about the href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/?s=sfpd">SFPD’s involvement in the missing iPhone 5 case continues to grow, and now href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20102892-37/sf-police-launch-probe-into-iphone-search/">CNET is reporting that they are launching an internal probe looking into how the police supported Apple’s private security in searching for the device.

As it stands, it appears that the SFPD officers accompanied Apple Security to the home of the suspect, and stood outside while they searched his house after threatening to come back with a warrant.

If the SFPD came along just to strongarm the suspect into letting his house be searched, that’s thought to be in violation of laws requiring consent to search to be given without duress.

There’s also the worrying matter of the SFPD initially denying that they assisted, and the lack of a report of their actions.

HTC Gets Patents From Google, Goes After Apple

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/successful_troll2.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2375" title="successful_troll2" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/successful_troll2.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="441" />

We’ve taken a break from covering the eternal patent based machinations of tech companies on EiC, mostly because it’s astonishingly boring as everyone attempts to sue one another back into oblivion. However, this is interesting enough that it’s worth noticing: HTC is suing Apple using patents they just acquired from Google.

href="http://allthingsd.com/20110907/htc-we-paid-for-patents-we-got-from-google/">HTC apparently purchased the patents from Google for an unspecified amount over the past two weeks, and FOSS Patents has href="http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2011/09/these-are-patents-google-gave-to-htc-to.html">a good rundown of them here.

Here’s what’s interesting: this is analogous to a Cold War situation. Google is arming their allies so that they can wage war with Apple by proxy. Now, HTC may have paid market value for these patents (whatever that amounts to) or Google may have just asked for a token fee, but either way it’s bound to prolong Apple’s stay in court fighting HTC>

Foxconn Already Pumping Out 150k iPhone 5 Units Per Day

href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20110907PD223.html">According to Digitimes Foxconn is gearing up for the iPhone 5 push, and is already producing 150,000 units every day in their factories. They’re claiming that Apple will ship 5-6 million iPhones in September, and hit more than 22 million over Q4 of this year.

And you know what? Even if there are 5 million waiting in stores around the country at launch, I’m willing to bet that they’re still just as freaking impossible to get at the end of the day. Think of the insanity around buying an iPad 2, a device Apple knew was going to be extremely popular. I somehow doubt that the even bigger hype around the iPhone 5 will make it any easier to pick up one on launch day — or for weeks afterwards.

App Giveaway: wake N shake – The Merciless Alarm Clock Pro Shaker Edition for iPhone

A new alarm clock as just hit the App Store: wake N shake – The Merciless Alarm Clock. This is no ordinary alarm clock, because in order to turn it off, you must shake your iPhone until the meter on the screen fills up.

I am extremely guilty of hitting snooze on my alarm and going back to sleep. I have even been known to accidentally turn off the alarm entirely then falling back to sleep (this happened this morning, actually). wake N shake is an alarm clock for people like me, because after shaking my iPhone to turn off the alarm, I should be plenty awake to jump out of bed.

I’m almost scared to download it.

Wake N Shake – The Merciless Alarm Clock Pro Shaker Edition is the only alarm clock app in the app store designed to wake you up feeling ready to seize the day. Motivated. Energetic. Pumped.

It’s like jump-starting your day. By shaking the iPhone like your life depends on it, you raise your heart rate, and you wake up instantly!

Pro Shaker Edition Exclusive Features

The Pro Shaker Edition is designed for everyone who really wants to get their day started with a bang and somersault out of bed feeling like it’s their birthday, every day!

The developers of this unique alarm clock have generously given us 5 promo codes to give away to our awesome readers! For chance to win, let us know, on average, the number of times you hit snooze before actually getting out of bed in the comments below. I hit it about 3 times.

wake N shake – The Merciless Alarm Clock Pro Shaker Edition is available on the iPhone for $0.99.

The free version is still in review by Apple, but the below link will work once the app goes live.

iOS Devices Get Google Music Web App

Google Music beta (limited invite only beta) has been out for a few months and the service is excellent. The initial process can be very time consuming, depending upon the size of your collection, since it effectively uploads all of your music to the cloud. The Mac application works in the background and will upload any non-DRM tracks that I add to iTunes, so it’s immediately available within Google Music. Once completed, you can access and play your music from any web browser. Android owners have also been able to use the dedicated Google Music app. In my case, a limited storage Nexus One can now access any song from 40GB plus music library. While it would be great to have a dedicated iOS app, Google today introduced a new Music beta web app, accessible directly through Safari. Initial impressions are that it’s quite good and a great first step in lieu of a full blown iOS app.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0053.jpg">title="IMG_0053" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0053.jpg" alt="" width="375" height="281" />

id="more-23549">

In my brief usage, the app works quite well. It’s very basic, with tabs for Artists, Albums, Songs, Playlists and Genres. Google Music supports playlists created within iTunes, for even further convenience. Sliding along the alphabet along the right side of the app allows you to move rather quickly within the app. The search tool also found artists with ease. Scrolling is surprisingly smooth.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0054.jpg">title="IMG_0054" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0054.jpg" alt="" width="375" height="281" />

Apple will take the wraps off iCloud in the coming weeks, but it’s quite different from Google Music. iCloud will allow you to download music that might not be on your iPhone, but it won’t let you stream music without first downloading it. With my 32GB iPhone, I will be able to access any song with my 40GB collection with little effort using this new web app. It also frees up valuable space for apps and/or vides. With iCloud, the track must be either on my iPhone or will need to be downloaded from iCloud. Google Music essentially means that an 8GB device is more than adequate given the streaming capabilities. With iCloud, you’re still relying on storage and pesky space limitations of your device.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0055.jpg">class="alignnone size-full wp-image-23553" title="IMG_0055" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/IMG_0055.jpg" alt="" width="281" height="375" />

In any event, those of you with a Google Music account should be pleased as punch. If you are on the outside looking in, this is one invitation you’ll want to accept, even more so given the new web app. You can href="http://music.google.com/about/">request an invitation by visiting Google Music.

The story of a researcher accidentally transported to an alien world, it wowed all comers thanks to its detailed graphics powered by revolutionary rotoscoped polygons. The game eventually found its way onto Apple IIGS, DOS, SNES, Mega Drive, and was considered blisteringly hard, even by 1991 standards. You will die, and die often.

    Now we’ve just discovered href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/chahis-another-world-teleports-to-ios-september-22/">that Another World is heading to iOS September 22, where it’ll set you back $4.99 for a universal app. You can control it via either touch controls or an onscreen keyboard, and there are new difficulty levels, both easier and harder. Plus there’s a graphics overhaul you can turn on at your will.

    Tim Cook Rolls Out Charitable Matching Program For Employees

    When Steve Jobs came into power in Apple during its floundering years, one of the programs cut was a charitable match where Apple would meet its employees’ contributions to a recognized. While Apple didn’t have the funds to run the program then, it certainly does now, and Tim Cook has just instated a new program to that effect. An email was sent out to Apple employees, saying:

    Team:

    I am very happy to announce that we are kicking off a matching gift program for charitable donations. We are all really inspired by the generosity of our co-workers who give back to the community and this program is going to help that individual giving go even farther.

    Starting September 15, when you give money to a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Apple will match your gift dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000 annually. This program will be for full-time employees in the US at first, and we’ll expand it to other parts of the world over time.

    Thank you all for working so hard to make a difference, both here at Apple and in the lives of others. I am incredibly proud to be part of this team.

    If you’d like more information on the program, you can get it on HRWeb, which can be easily accessed through AppleWeb.

    Tim

    MacRumors has confirmed through Apple href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/08/apple-institutes-new-charitable-matching-program-for-employees/">that this email is legitimate. During Jobs’ tenure, donations were very much a private thing, but it looks like Apple is now planning to take a more directly charitable tack. Also interesting is that href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/09/08/tim-cooks-first-anti-jobsian-move/">Seth Wientraub characterizes this as Cook’s first “anti-Jobsian” move, in that it’s quite different to how his predecessor handled things like this.

    The company that makes this game, along with their previous titles Samarost and Samarost 2, have the most incredible ability to tell beautiful and bittersweet stories through games completely devoid of dialogue. The puzzles are often fiendish in a way that’ll please any fan of the point-and-click genre. You also have the gorgeous graphics and haunting music, all of which really sell the title.

    Check it out if you like puzzles, it really is worth the $5.

    Google releases Blogger for iPhone

    Google has released an official iPhone app for their blogging platform, Blogger. It supports multiple accounts and location information.

    It’s great too see Google offering a native application for Blogger, but it irks me that in Google’s announcement, they refer to the app as Google for iOS. This implies that it is for all iOS platforms – but it does not have a universal binary. This is technically an iPhone app. Sure, the iPad has the ability to run iPhone apps, but you have to either have run all tiny in the center of the screen or hit that dreaded 2x button.

    So, since Google says that you can now access Blogger from “your iOS device”, does this mean that Google is not planning on making it a universal app? Do they actually think this is good enough for iPad users?

    With Blogger app for iPhone and iPod touch, you can easily publish posts with pictures, labels and location information. Also, you can view the list of posts and if you have multiple accounts or blogs, you can easily switch between them.

    Blogger is available on the iPhone for free.

    Could we get an iPhone nano like the Cricket Android Vitality?

    The especially awesome Phil Nickinson from Android Central went hands on with the Android powered Samsung Vitality on Cricket, and I have to say I liked what he saw quite a bit — namely:

    As you’ll see in the video above, Muve is an easy-to-use music service. But what really makes it shine is that Cricket’s made the billing process as simple as can be. Actually, there is no billing. No per-song fee. You pay $65 a month for unlimited voice calls. And unlimited data. And unlimited Muve Music. And for our money, it doesn’t get much better than that.

    Now TiPb’s heard going back to WWDC 2011 that Apple has an iPhone nano (or budget iPhone) type device pretty much done and ready to go, and TiPb’s since heard that it may not be getting the traditional plans on traditional carriers either (or at least that we might be surprised where it ends up.)

    A stripped down, low cost iPhone is one thing when it still requires $100+ on monthly voice and data charges, but a low cost iPhone with a low cost plan like $65 a month to go with it? Super. Sweet.

    Apple doesn’t compete in the bargain basement computer business. They kick it in the head with something like iPad or the new MacBook Air. But Apple does compete in the lower end MP3 player market with iPod shuffle and iPod nano, so they do understand the market for smaller, less expensive consumer electronics that still tie (not going to say seamlessly!) into their ecosystem.

    Whether they ultimately pull the trigger on this, only Tim Cook now knows for sure, but again — inexpensive iPhone nano with a cheap $65 all-you-can eat service plan? That’ll bring a lot of young, mainstream more price sensitive, first phone and feature phone users into the Apple fold, wouldn’t it?

    Check out Phil’s full hand’s on via the link below and then come back and tell me what you think — will we get an iPhone nano version of this deal?

    Saks Fifth Avenue using 64 iPads for its window display

    Saks Fifth Avenue has found a rather innovative way to celebrate Fashion’s Night Out. Working with Stylelist and designer Gin Lane Media, it has produced an interactive window display using sixty four iPads in one window and nine 27-inch Apple Cinema Displays in the other two windows.

    “The iPads are running a native iPad application specifically built for the installation,” said Dan Kenger, Digital Creative Director at Gin Lane Media. “Using a local network, which we setup, we are able to get all the iPads to talk to each other as well as perfect the timing to produce elegant fades and control what device should display what.”

    The displays will feature images from Stylelist, tweets from around the world and even customer submitted photographs. If you want a chance to get your tweet or picture up on the display, just tag them with the hashtag #StylelistatSaks.

    If anyone gets the chance to wander past the display, let us know what you think!

    Apple scraps music streaming for iPhone 5

    Awhile back, Apple managed to generate a lot of buzz over a proposed update that would allow users to stream music directly to their iPhone 5. In a video that the company released, it showed a beta version of iTunes Match that allowed iOS users to store music in the iCloud and then stream the music directly to their iPhone 5 or any other iOS device.  Now it seems, however, that this feature will not be featured in the new iOS versions. This was first noticed in the iOS 5 beta 7 that was released for developers.

    The development does deserve a bit of attention because it gives us a rare glimpse of the ideas that bubble inside Apple’s head. Unlike its archrival Google, which just throws everything online and then works things from there, Apple only releases products online after a lot of careful research and development. Many great ideas have to be looked at multiple times before something is eventually released to the public, which also means we rarely get to see the creative drive within the company.

    At the time of the release, people argued that it was not exactly streaming because the music was downloaded and temporarily stored on the iOS device’s cache. Still, it was unique and it allowed users to increase the memory and of the device by storing music and videos on-line on the cloud and then accessing it at any time. Thus, users will be spared the agony of having to delete their data every time they reach a limit. Perhaps, this is the reason why Apple has updated the feature so that when a user plays a track saved online, it is automatically permanently downloaded on to the iOS device. Whatever, the reason, it is a quite a disappointment. Perhaps we will get a better idea of Apple’s motives in time to come.

    Foxconn factory producing 150,000 iPhone 5 units a day?

    According to randomly accurate rumor site Digitimes, Foxconn is currently rolling out around 150,000 iPhone 5 units a day. The information comes from industry sources. Pegatron Technology who were thought to have won around 15% of the iPhone 5 manufacturing orders may not start shipping until 2012 according to the same sources.

    Lens maker Largan Precision, touch panel maker TPK Holding, reinforced glass supplier G-Tech Optoelectronics and battery vendors Simplo and Dynapack are all operating at full swing currently, the sources indicated.

    The iPhone 5 should reach shipment levels of 5-6 million units in September leading to over 22 million units in the fourth quarter. Suppliers will ship a lot less iPhone 4 models in the final quarter; it will probably become the entry level iPhone model. This would follow previous years where the current model becomes a cheaper model with a reduced storage capacity.
