Apple now using Twitter to promote U.S. iBookstore

Apple is now using Twitter to promote the United States version of their iBookstore. Apple already uses Twitter to promote content for App store apps, iTunes music, TV shows, and iTunes movies. Even though the iBookstore account was created quite some time ago, Apple appears to have just started utilizing the account.

The first tweet was actually sent out just today –

Welcome to the Apple #iBookstore on Twitter. Follow us to discover new releases, exclusive book offers, and more.

The last tweet sent from the account is a link to a list of books that are quick reads at good prices. I’ve become a fan of companies using social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook to communicate with customers. If you’re an avid reader and utilize iBooks you may want to follow the account for new releases, discounts, sales, and recommended picks. Hit the link below to follow iBookstore on Twitter.

AT&T And Verizon Both Release New Prepay Plans, Prepaid iPhone Coming?

One of the more nebulous rumors surrounding the next round of iPhones is that Apple might be eyeing up releasing a low-cost, prepaid iPhone to better tap international/low-cost markets. Sure, buying an iPhone might not be too expensive, but a two-year commitment at $75 or so a month ends up with you giving thousands of dollars to your carrier. Now, just weeks before we’re expecting Apple to announce a new iPhone of some description, both AT&T and Verizon have announced new prepay plans.

Verizon is planning a $50 per month href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110913-711153.html">unlimited talk/text/data prepay tier, allowing you unlimited use of your device for $50 — which is still href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/09/14/verizon_att_introduce_new_prepaid_plans_ahead_of_iphone_refresh.html">higher than some competitors, like MetroPCS’ $40 unlimited, or Sprint Boost’s $35 version (for some).

AT&T, on the other hand, is offering href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/13/atandt-announces-25-monthly-gophone-plan-beginning-september-18th/">$25 per month for 250 anytime minutes and unlimited messaging; $10 international long distance package with 250 minutes; and Canada roaming for $.39 per minute and $.25 per message sent.

Now, there’s no solid evidence that these have anything to do with a prepay iPhone, perhaps a heavily modified iPhone 4. However, the timing is nothing if not interesting, so this should at the very lest make you perk up your ears.

Turntable.fm Hits App Store

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.rabgiqki.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23630" title="mzl.rabgiqki.320x480-75" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.rabgiqki.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />Social dj-ing app href="http://turntable.fm">Turntable.fm has had a website for quite some time, but the highly anticipated app version has only href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/turntable.fm-play-music-together/id460448648?mt=8">just landed in the app store. You have to login to the service via Facebook, but once inside you get a musical experience that’s unlike any other. Each room has up to five djs, who take turns choosing the next track for the entire crowd to groove on. When the music plays, listeners can vote (and if it sucks, skip it), chat, and just generally have a good time.

You can either open your room to the public, or have it set to private, where just those with a specific URL can get it — which makes it perfect for curating the music for a house party. That way plenty of people get to chose the sounds, and you just hook the rig into the speaker system.

The one downside is that you can only chose music that’s on Turntable’s servers, not from your own collection.

Sprint iPad and iPhone Ready For October Launch?

As we get closer to a possible Apple announcement the target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/sprint-iphone-rumors-heating-up">Sprint iPhone rumors keep leaking. A Sprint Nextel sales associate told onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.tuaw.com/2011/09/13/sprint-begins-briefing-sales-associates-on-iphone-4-for-october/');" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2011/09/13/sprint-begins-briefing-sales-associates-on-iphone-4-for-october/">TUAW that they will be carrying the iPhone 4 and a 4G onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad in October. The tipster seemed a bit confused claiming Sprint would only be offering the iPhone 4 and not the iPhone 5. However, a TUAW reader suggested that Sprint’s training materials might not include the iPhone 5 due to secrecy. Another person wondered if the iPhone 5 is being delayed even longer than anticipated since the associate wasn’t being prepped for it.

On Wednesday, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/9to5mac.com/2011/09/14/apples-sprint-compatible-ipad-appears-ready-and-waiting-for-launch/');" target="_blank" href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/09/14/apples-sprint-compatible-ipad-appears-ready-and-waiting-for-launch/">9to5Mac said a Sprint compatible iPad is completed and ready to launch before the holidays. Previous leaks suggested that href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/best-buy-leaks-possible-iphone-5-release-date">Best Buy and Sprint employees are preparing to launch some kind of iPhone, but there has been no news about a Sprint capable iPad. 9to5Mac didn’t have many details, including if it would run on Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network.

The href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/is-the-iphone-4-and-5-coming-to-sprint-in-october">Wall Street Journal, who originally broke the news about a Sprint iPhone, did say the carrier would be offering the iPhone 4 and possibly iPhone 5.

Asphalt 6 Goes Free For A Limited Time

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.drkjtfju.480x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23633" title="mzl.drkjtfju.480x480-75" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.drkjtfju.480x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="360" />The most recent entry in Gameloft’s ultrapopular street-racing game — Asphalt 6 — has gone free for a limited time. Available in both href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/asphalt-6-adrenaline-hd/id400975931?mt=8">iPad and href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/asphalt-6-adrenaline/id400973408?mt=8">iPhone, Gameloft has made the app free, but we don’t know how long it’ll last for. While hardly a new title — it debuted in December of last year — Asphalt 6: Adrenaline is part of the large genre of street-racing games that enjoy destruction as much as speed.

Borrowing heavily from the Need for Speed franchise, the Asphalt games have a large number of cars and tracks, and a wide variety of different game modes, sure to meet any needs. And from what I remember from Asphalt 5, the cop levels are bizarrely harder than any of the others.

iMessage To Come To iChat?

One of the features in iOS 5 that we’re really looking forward to is iMessage, an Apple supported free messaging service between iPhone users. Frankly, anything that kills of SMS seems a good thing right about now. New href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/14/apple-is-building-imessage-into-os-x-lions-ichat/">information uncovered by MacRumors shows that iMessages might be extending their reach, and could be combined with iChat on Mac OS X in the near future.

In the framework for iChat in Lion are the following properties:

@interface IMMessage : NSObject/> {/> IMHandle *_sender;/> IMHandle *_subject;/> NSAttributedString *_text;/> NSString *_plainBody;/> NSDate *_time;/> NSDate *_timeDelivered;/> NSDate *_timeRead;

Those two in bold are both new, and both unsupported by any of iChat’s protocols, but are present in iMessage.

Hopefully this means we’ll be able to easily and instantly message from iPhone to computer and back again using native Apple apps.

Rumor: Physical Home Button For iPhone 5

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/iphone-5-home-button.jpeg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23636" title="iphone-5-home-button" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/iphone-5-home-button.jpeg" alt="" width="360" height="360" />href="http://www.cultofmac.com/is-this-the-iphone-5s-home-button-we-hope-not/113440">Cult of Mac has unearthed this small piece of kit from a href="http://www.sz-china-better.com/itemQuery_15357_pucker.html_15357:iPhone%205%20Parts.html">Chinese seller, which is claimed to be a home-button for the iPhone 5. So, why is this important? Because one of the endearing rumors is that the iPhone 5 will have a capacitive touch home button, rather than a physical one. Your current iPhone has a physical button, and so to is the one pictured above, but a bunch of people think that it might be instead a little sensor that detects your finger.

I’m a much bigger fan of physical buttons over capacitive, as they tend to handle real-world situations much better, but even so I’m not sure about this information. For one, the parts labelled as “iPhone 5″ look very similar to those of the iPhone 4 — which could either mean they’re mislabeled, or else that these are for an iPhone 4S type device that’s physically very similar to the current iPhone. Which in turn means that there could still be a capacitive button on the iPhone 5.

Though I’d still prefer a physical one, just from my own experience.

Apple revises iPhone warranty and return policy in South Korea

Apple will be revising their iPhone warranty and return policy in South Korea due to customers that were unhappy about their current return policy. If a customer receives a defective device they will be able to exchange it for a brand new device instead of a refurbished one within 1 month of the original purchase date.

Korean iPhone customers are not happy about Apple replacing defective devices with refurbished ones that have used parts in them when the actual warranty states they are entitled to a refund, new device, or free repair. When Apple spokesperson Steve Park was asked about the new warranty policy in South Korea he declined to comment.

I’ve personally never had any issues with refurbished iPhones from Apple. I’ve actually had better luck with them than brand new out of the box units. I’ve actually heard that refurbished units undergo a more rigorous testing cycle than brand new units. Not sure how much truth there is to that but I seldom have issues.

When Apple exchanges your products are you ok with receiving refurbished units? Have you had issues with them?

Will iMessage soon be integrated into OS X Lion’s iChat?

iMessage is one of the great new features of the upcoming iOS 5 update and now there is evidence that it may soon be integrated with OS X Lion’s iChat instant messaging software. This would enable instant messaging between iOS devices and Mac computers running OS X Lion.

iMessage is an iOS 5 messaging application which includes sending messages, photos and videos over WiFi or 3G. Messages can be pushed across all iOS devices that use the same account. You can even pick up on the conversation right where you left off when switching from your iPhone to your iPad or iPod touch.

MacRumors received some information today that reveals some new code has been added to OS X Lion’s iChat framework that points to integration with the iChat app and iMessage.

The “timeDelivered” and “timeRead’ fields indicate the tracking of delivery and read receipts for instant messages. These features, however, are not supported in any of iChat’s native messaging protocols, while the same features are offered in Apple’s iMessage protocol. These properties were also not present in previous versions of iChat prior to OS X Lion. We believe the only reason Apple would have added these properties was to build in cross compatibility with their new iMessage protocol.

This does make a lot of sense and is something that has been strongly rumored earlier in the year too. I think it is only a matter of time before this all comes together and I would not be surprised if it was announced along with the official launch of  iOS 5.

Reading Rainbow’s Next Home The iPad?

width="420" height="345" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0">name="allowFullScreen" value="true" />name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" />name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/c6j8EiWIVZs?version=3&hl=en_US" />name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />width="420" height="345" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/c6j8EiWIVZs?version=3&hl=en_US" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" />

Like so many others out there, Reading Rainbow was a staple of my early television years, and helped instil a long and lasting love of books. So why not do the same for the digital age? According to href="http://www.fastcompany.com/1779937/reading-rainbow-rrkidz-levar-burton">Fast Company, LeVar Burton is planning on bringing the Reading Rainbow name to the iPad.

Burton’s for-profit venture, RRKidz, plans to launch an educational iPad app that lets children explore topics of interest–such as, say space–in a multimedia-rich environment, with voice-over-enhanced children’s books, familiar videos of Burton at real-life places (like NASA), and, of course, games. Burton tells Fast Company he’s on a mission to “get kids hooked on books,” and says his company is “going to where kids are today; those devices that they love to spend time on.”

The first app will apparently be a multimedia reading environment, where carefully chosen stories are given some voiceovers, games and simple animations to get kids interested in them. And of course, you’ll have Burton is his usual role, exploring and explaining topics that tie in to the story.

A big part of this will be a new way of streamlining the production process, allowing the developers to go from a PDF to enhanced, voice-overed, and animated version “in a matter of hours.”

Microsoft previews Windows 8 as desktop/tablet iPad rival

Yesterday Microsoft gave us a brief look at its next operating system, code named Windows 8. The operating system will be aimed at not only desktop and laptop PC systems but also the tablet market. Will Windows 8 deliver enough for a Windows Tablet to become a real competitor to the iPad and iOS?

The answer at this stage is very unclear; Microsoft has previously claimed that older versions of Windows would work well on Table PC’s as well as desktop and laptop systems. Unfortunately a distinct lack of Windows tablet sales tell a completely different story. Apple on the other hand stepped in and released the iPad with a cut down version of OSX designed for touch input, all of a sudden Tablet devices were vogue and everyone wanted one!

Looking at the features of Windows 8, it could be a very appealing OS for Tablets. It integrates the Windows Phone 7 Metro UI with the full blown power of Windows . Any app you run on your desktop or laptop could be executed on a handheld tablet. That is very appealing; there is no doubt about that. What is a doubt however is Microsoft’s ability to deliver the full experience and make these apps usable with touch.

When I talk about experience I mean how easy the device is to use. Yes Windows 8 will be a great experience with a mouse and keyboard, I don’t doubt that. What I do have serious concerns over is how well that will work using your fingers. How will developers address the issue of not only writing their apps for a mouse and keyboard entry system but also for touch too? If they fail to do it, using a Windows Tablet will again be a frustrating experience.

Microsoft has a lot of work to do to bring all of this together. They need to consider every possibility with every app and interface. It needs to be standardized so users know where they are and how to get where they need to be without much thought. I really hope Microsoft can pull this off, they need to learn from previous mistakes and deliver a tightly integrated touch OS. Unfortunately history tells us they will fall way short of this goal.

If you want to see a short video of Windows 8, there is a demonstration video below from This Is My Next. Do you think Microsoft and its partners have what it takes to challenge Apple’s dominance in the tablet space?

Sprint compatible iPad may be ready for launch

Apple and Sprint may have already completed work on a Sprint compatible iPad. 9to5Mac claims that the Sprint iteration of the iPad will join the rest of the current iPad line-up (GSM models and Verizon) before the holiday season. Given we’ve also heard confirmations of Sprint getting the iPhone 5, it would only make sense they’d eventually carry the iPad as well.

Sprint is the only carrier in the United States that still offers truly unlimited data plans. This may be a big draw for data hungry consumers that aren’t currently happy with their tier happy carriers. 9to5Mac didn’t seem to be able to confirm whether or not the Sprint variation of the iPad will support their 4G WiMAX network. The fact that Apple has made a separate version to run on Sprint instead of using the existing Verizon CDMA model may have something to do with 4G but at this point it’s still unclear.

If Sprint ends up carrying the iPhone 5 and/or iPad this Fall, would you switch to have truly unlimited data again?

Top 5 NFL Football apps for iPhone

Football_Main

Football season is upon us again and with it comes the need for score updates, player stats, rosters, and other information hardcore fans want in the palm of their hands. For iPhone users, you’ve got tons of options when it comes to apps. Whether you just want to check score updates or check on your favorite fantasy football league. Follow along for our top picks.

ScoreCenter is by far one of the most popular sports apps in the App Store. Not only does it contain support for NFL but other sports as well. You can follow your favorite teams and choose to receive push notifications for a variety of different things. You can set alerts for individual games or for a whole season which is nice for people who may not want updates for games they’re able to watch. They can just set them for games they know they’re going to miss.

I like the fact that ScoreCenter allows you to follow all your teams and see a brief summary in one place. If you just want to check scores and stats quickly you won’t have to dig around. But you have the option to see more detailed information if you want to.

ScoreCenter is a free download in the App Store.

[Free - App Store Link]

For those of you that take part in fantasy football leagues, ESPN also offers an app for fantasy leagues as well. You’ll need to already have a fantasy league to use this app but once you have one, you can use the app to manage the following aspects of your fantasy league –

The app also allows you to view fantasy league news as well. It’s also a free download in the App Store.

[Free - App Store Link]

If you want to view more than just stats, scores, rosters, and rankings – you may prefer Pro Football Insider. It contains not only the information you’d expect but thousands of video clips, updated news and rumors, and even more.

One thing I really found interesting about this app over the others was the integrated Twitter feed which aggregates Twitter postings from not only industry experts but players themselves.

If you’re a Pro Football Insider subscriber you’ll also have access to even more premium content that the free app doesn’t provide. This is an app any hardcore football fan will want to pick up.

[Free - App Store Link]

While I didn’t find NFL ’11 to be as in depth as some of the other picks, the ease of use and simple to navigate interface somewhat makes up for that. If you need an app that will give you up to date game information along with player stats, rosters, and statistics – NFL ’11 should suit you well.

You can customize alerts for teams and games just as you can in some of the other popular apps such as ESPN ScoreCenter. NFL ’11 also offers integration with their NFL.com Fantasy Football 2011 service and app. Most fantasy football fans I talked to seemed to prefer the ESPN fantasy app better but if you prefer the NFL fantasy app, this pairing may be a better option for you.

[Free - App Store Link]

Here’s another app fantasy football leaguers will definitely want to check out. Not only does it aggregate up to date NFL news, standings, and charts – it’s one of the better apps out there for managing your fantasy leagues.

Out of the apps I checked out for fantasy football fans, this app seemed to have the best user interface by far. You can quickly view profiles and stats by simply swiping left and right. Other apps sometimes left stats buried and harder to get to. This app is put together exceptionally well and will make managing your content easier than ever.

Some of the main features of the app include the following and much, much more –

[$2.99 - App Store Link]

While these may be some of our favorite apps to load up on our iOS devices during football season, it doesn’t mean there aren’t other great ones out there. If you use something different let us know what your picks are as well. Special thanks to ‎@jlew0451, @EckStrm, @Wrnglr, and everyone else who helped out by telling us their favorite football apps!

And if you want even more suggestions on football or NFL apps, check out our TiPb apps & games forum for more opinions from forum members. You can also give us your opinions on your favorite sports apps in our TiPb apps & games review forum. We’d love to hear from you!

OS X Lion Ultimatum theme brings OS X to your iOS device [jailbreak]

OS X Ultimatum

Theming your iPhone is definitely one of the perks of being jailbroken. Sometimes a really nice theme comes along that completely changes not only the design but the way you use your iPhone. This may be the case with the OS X Ultimatum theme by Modmyi forum member SirTimothy1.

OS X Ultimatium is a complete overhaul of the iPhone UI and brings it back to the look and feel of the full scale version of Mac OS X. The theme boasts of the following features –

The developer is also planning on optimizing the theme even more to free up more RAM. Brazilian made iPads to ship in December, production already started

According to a report by Brazilian technology website UOL, the Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology, Aolizio Mercadante, has confirmed that the new Foxconn factory in Jundiai is up and running. The iPad 2 production line is in operation and they will begin shipping this December.

At first many doubted, but it will be the first time that the company will produce iPads outside Chinese territory. We are taking a big step for digital inclusion in the country,” he said. Mercadante also said that the federal government will announce in the coming days to invest in a big factory of games in the Manaus Free Zone.

Originally the factory was scheduled to start production in late August / early September so it appears that the time frame was spot on. Foxconn has apparently sent over 175 engineers from China to assist with the smooth running of the iPad 2 production process.

Poll: Would you be less likely to get iPhone 5 if there’s no new design?

There are two seemingly conflicting rumors circulating about iPhone 5‘s design — 1) that it will be a real, radical iPhone 5 redesign in a thinner, curvier, bigger screened, dare-I-say more metal-backed package, or 2) that it will be more of an iPhone 4S with increased specs like an Apple A5 chip but the overall design will still be the same as the current iPhone 4, stainless steel sandwiched in glass.

I’ve been hoping for option 1, a real, redesigned iPhone 5 since about a minute after I saw the back glass of iPhone 4. Jeremy on the other hand keeps bringing me down by saying “you get iPhone 4S!”.

But is faster, maybe thinner and lighter enough for you? Or will it take a substantial redesign for you to upgrade your iPhone again? If you don’t get it this generation, will you hold onto what you have and wait for the next or, horror of horrors, start looking at something else? I know Rene loves the iPhone 4 design and I’m sure many others do as well. Sure it has been on the market for 15 months already, but iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS kept the same design on the market for 24 months (closer to 40 if you count the iPhone 3GS 8GB that’s still being sold today!)

What do you think, TiPb Nation — Would you be less likely to get iPhone 5 if there’s no new design?

I0n1c’s Black Hat iOS Kernel Exploitation presentation available to download [jailbreak]

Stefan Esser, better known as I0n1c has put together a rather detailed presentation on the latest iOS jailbreak techniques. The presentation was made recently at Black Hat 2011 in Las Vegas. The presentation consists of 97 slides in total covering subjects like Kernel Debugging, Kernel Exploitation and Kernelpatches from jailbreaks.

The iPhone user land is locked down very tightly by kernel level protections. Therefore any sophisticated attack has to include a kernel exploit in order to completely compromise the device. Because of this our previous session titled “Targeting the iOS Kernel” already discussed how to reverse the iOS kernel in order to find kernel security vulnerabilities. Exploitation of iOS kernel vulnerabilities has not been discussed yet.

To be honest, this is way over my head but if you do have an interest in this area and want to take a look at the presentation in its entirety, you can download it here.
