Verizon airs iPad 2 commercial

Verizon airs iPad 2 commercial

Seemingly not content with Apple’s stellar run of Peter Coyote voiced iPad 2 commercials, Verizon has struck out on a commercial of their own (pun semi intended) simply entitled iPad2. (Lack of proper spacing theirs, not ours.)

It does start off saying iPad 2 is “faster, thinner, and lighter”. Thankfully, however, there’s nary a mention of Tegra 2 processors — or rather Apple A5 processors — in sight, simply a focus on buying iBooks on the beach, staying connected at the park, and photo tweeting while camping.

These make sense as a way to try and steal iPad 2 users away from the AT&T 3G model, much as Verizon did last year with their Break Away commercial for the original iPad + Mi-Fi combo deal, and both Verizon and AT&T have done for iPhone 4.

This one doesn’t feel as solid as any of those though. If you were on the carrier fence, would this make you choose Verizon?

Daily Tip: jailbreak iOS 5 beta 7 via Redsn0w 0.9.8b7

Currently running iOS 5 beta 7 and wondering how to Jailbreak? Well you’re in luck, you can now do so with the newest version of Redsn0w. Of course this one is also tethered like the previous beta versions of RedSn0w for iOS 5.

Be advised that not all jailbreak apps and tweaks have been updated to support iOS 5. If you’re alright with running tethered and don’t mind a few bugs here and there, follow along for a quick walkthrough.

By this point, almost anyone jailbreaking is already familiar with RedSn0w and how it works. It’s no different this time.

And I can’t say this enough times, if your device is not listed above, please do not attempt to jailbreak it on iOS 5!

After you have iOS 5 beta 7 installed on your device, your device backed up, and your version of iTunes upgraded to the newest beta version, follow the steps below to jailbreak.

  1. First launch RedSn0w.

  2. It should ask you to navigate to a firmware file. Simply navigate to the iOS 5 beta 6 firmware file instead of beta 7.

  3. Once you click next, RedSn0w will take a minute to do it’s thing. You should see a patching kernel message and that Redsn0w successfully recognized your firmware.

  4. Next select the options you’d like RedSn0w to perform. I typically only select Install Cydia. It’s worth noting that this is where you will perform a tethered boot if needed as well. You will just select Just boot tethered for now if you need to do this or your device reboots or dies.

  5. Redsn0w will now walk you through putting your device into DFU mode

  6. After you’re successfully in DFU mode, simply let Redsn0w do its thing and you’re done!

That’s it! The process is pretty much the same as the first time around. But if you do run into problems or have questions, make sure you check out our TiPb Jailbreak Forums. We’ve got tons of great members more than ready and willing to help!

Redsn0w releases jailbreak for iOS 5 Beta 7

Only a few days ago, Apple released the iOS 5 Beta 7 for developers. The new update features a variety of security and stability fixes. However, it seems that Apple may have underplayed the security issues because Redsn0w has already updated its jailbreak tool in order to take on the new update. The recent update is described as one that “explicitly supports” the iOS 5 Beta 7 update. This also means that users will no longer have to target the tool on iOS 5 Beta 6 when they want to jail break iOS 5 Beta 7.

The iPhone Dev-Team also posted a short description of the update on their website as follows.

About 12 hours after we released redsn0w 0.9.8b7 with some improvements for iOS5b6, Apple went and released iOS5b7 (what are the odds of that?!?).  Even though that redsn0w could still jailbreak iOS5b7, you needed to point it at the iOS5b6 IPSW to do so.  Today’s redsn0w 0.9.8b7b lets you point redsn0w directly at the iOS5b7 IPSW instead.
We’ve also added some overall improvements for old-bootrom 3GS owners (where the 24kpwn exploit applies):  on those devices, you can tell redsn0w to untether 4.3.5 and lower, or iOS5b7.  Old-bootrom 3GS owners can once again choose custom logos, and/or verbose booting (for the really nerdy iPhone3GS fans out there!).  And it allows 4.3.4 or 4.3.5 users to use ultrasn0w again (if they have a compatible baseband).

Users who wish to download the latest update can do so from the Dev-Team’s blog. The updated version of the jailbreak tool is now available for both the Mac and Windows. However, take note that this update should be used by jailbreak developers. This is not meant for casual iPhone users.

In the long-term, this looks like another salvo against Apple’s iOS culture. Unlike its archrival Android, Apple takes good care to ensure that it has full control over the development and distribution of its operating system. The only problem is that now Apple seems to be creating two different classes of iPhone users: legitimate users and jail breakers. Legally, Apple has lost the argument against jail breaking but it still has the power to deny users their warrant or after-sales services. While many have condemned the move, Apple still maintains a fanatical fan base that easily outnumbers its detractors.

Financial Times apps removed from the Apple App store

Apple is a demanding host and thus far, its sheer brilliance and the power it has accumulated through the iPhone and iPad have given it an immense negotiating advantage over its rivals. In exchange for superb services and the promise of attracting droves of new customers, Apple demands a sizeable reward. However, in the case of the Financial Times, Apple may have overestimated its position. As it turns out, the Financial Times will pull its iPad and iPhone apps off the App store market after a disagreement over the control of data collected through subscriptions.

Recently, Apple began forcing major firms to go through its own App store when selling subscription apps. This gives Apple full control over the ownership of valuable data about customers while also giving it a 30% share of all the revenues earned through the apps. Buoyed by the success of the iPad, Apple even launched its own subscription service for magazines, newspapers, music and videos but did not get a very enthusiastic response from major publishers because of the concern regarding ownerships and revenues.

Apple cannot be accused of being greedy because the evidence clearly shows that publishers who have manage to introduce apps for the iPhone and iPad have seen sales increase significantly. For instance, the iPad now accounts for almost 25% of FT’s total sales and is a major source of new subscriptions. More importantly, FT’s digital subscriptions increased by 34% to around 230,000 in the first half of this year. Mobile devices were responsible for 25% of the increase while accounting for 22% of the FT.com traffic.

However, FT did not leave Apple without a credible alternative plan. The company recently rolled out a web-based version of its mobile app that allows users to sign up on the website and then use the mobile web browser of any device (e.g: the Safari browser of the iPhone and iPad) to sign-in and view the content.  The experience is very similar to that of a native app. In addition, FT also plans to roll out an app for the Android platform.

Overall, the disagreement has not soured the relationship between the two companies. FT even promised to keep using the App store apps in the future. However, if there is a lesson to be learned here, it is that Apple’s power over its clients is steadily weakening as new technological alternatives become viable and its rivals become stronger. Apple would be wise to take note.

Sprint Attempts To Stop AT&T T-Mobile Merger, AT&T Responds

In what can only be described as the least surprising move ever, Sprint has put their money where their mouth is, and href="http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/06/sprint-sues-to-block-attt-mobile-merger">sued to block the AT&T T-Mobile merger as being anticompetitive. Here’s their release:

Sprint Files Suit to Block Proposed AT&T and T-Mobile Transaction

WASHINGTON (BUSINESS WIRE), September 06, 2011 – Sprint Nextel [NYSE:S] today brought suit against AT&T, Inc., AT&T Mobility, Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile seeking to block the proposed acquisition as a violation of Section 7 of the Clayton Act. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in the District of Columbia as a related case to the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) suit against the proposed acquisition.

“Sprint opposes AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile,” said Susan Z. Haller, vice president-Litigation, Sprint. “With today’s legal action, we are continuing that advocacy on behalf of consumers and competition, and expect to contribute our expertise and resources in proving that the proposed transaction is illegal.”

Sprint’s lawsuit focuses on the competitive and consumer harms which would result from a takeover of T-Mobile by AT&T. The proposed takeover would:

Apple suing over trademark infringement, AGAIN!

Leave it to Apple to sue for anything they deem even slightly as trademark infringement.  Now Apple is targeting a Chinese based food company Sichuan Fanggua Food Co., Ltd.

If you ask me the logo looks more like LG’s logo than Apple’s but Apple is claiming their logohref="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/apple-suing-over-trademark-infringement-again/attachment/lg-logo" rel="attachment wp-att-21960">class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-21960" title="lg-logo" src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/lg-logo-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /> uses conceptual elements of Apple’s logo.  Really a cutout at the bottom and a leaf facing right at the top is stealing your conceptual elements Apple?  First time I looked at it, the last thing that popped into my head is Apple.  It may kind of look like an apple but I don’t think of the company Apple.

In an article from onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/gochengdoo.com/en/blog/item/2397/apple_tells_chinese_food_company_to_change_its_logo');" target="_blank" href="http://gochengdoo.com/en/blog/item/2397/apple_tells_chinese_food_company_to_change_its_logo">go chengdoo, Apple told the company of the infringement on July 19, two days before the closing on their new logo.  The biggest issue with all of this is that  Fangguo  filed to extend their trademark into new product categories, which includes “notebook computers” and “electronic-game software.”  Now to me that’s a little fishy when your company makes noodles and flour.

But still, Apple sometimes needs to get off of their high horse and stop suing companies when something looks even the slightest bit like one of their trademarks.  I love you Apple, but come on now!

iPad 3 Battery Points To Thinner, Lighter Design

Bored of the iPhone 5 rumors yet? Well how about something for the iPad 3? href="http://cens.com/cens/html/en/news/news_inner_37633.html">The Taiwan Economic News is reporting that the next battery for the iPad will be thinner and lighter, not to mention priced 20%-30% more. According to their sources, not only will the batteries be skinnier and weigh less, but they’ll have a longer service life and meet CTIA IEEE 1625 standard for better quality and safety.

Apple has allegedly secured the services of Simplo Technology Co. and Dynapack International Technology Corp. to create the power packs, as they’re the only two Taiwanese companies with ability to make batteries matching these descriptions.

This means that either Apple can use the free space for more under the hood improvements, like potentially beefier processors or a retina display. Alternatively, they may just slimming down the entire iPad 3, making it even slighter than its already razor thin predecessor.

Poll: What’s the number one reason you Jailbreak?

What’s the main reason you Jailbreak your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad? Is it for themes, so you can change up the whole look and feel of your device? Is it to unlock so you can run it on T-Mobile or travel internationally? Is it convenience, so SBSettings and BiteSMS can keep you going faster? Is t coolness, so you can show your friends the icons rolling around your screen or how you can turn your device off like an old TV? Is it Tethering, because you feel like you’ve already paid your carrier once for that data? Is it functionality, because you want your screen projected or recorded?

Maybe it’s all or most of the above, but if you had to pick just one Jailbreak feature that’s most important to you, what would it be?

33 minutes

How fast must Apple push the pace of mobile innovation to keep the legion of competitors from catching up?

The mobile space has never been more relentless. It’s like Galactica — no matter how successful your last jump was, you have only 33 minutes to spin up again before the Cylons arrive and try to wipe you out.

And like Galactica, Apple now faces a new, evolved generation of competitors, some of which have taken their form, some of which are every bit as relentless as Cylons (and coincidentally share the same machine motif.)

While it seems like just yesterday that Steve Jobs held up the original iPhone on the Macworld 2007 stage and showed off full screen, multitouch iOS (then iPhone OS) for the first time, since then Android has officially launched, PalmOS was replaced with webOS, Windows Mobile was replaced with Windows Phone, and BlackBerry has just begun a transition to a new QNX base.

When that’s done, at roughly 5 years of age, iOS will be the oldest of the major mobile platforms on the market.

Now Apple has money, they have mindshare, and on a phone-to-phone, manufacturer-to-manufacturer basis they may even have a lot of the marketshare. But just like Apple’s competitors can’t bring specs to an experience fight, Apple can’t mistake device battles for a platform war.

The App Store remains the mother of all nukes in the mobile platform space, but for how long? Today’s refinement and maturity can lead to tomorrow’s stagnation and bloat. What has grown to appear all but unassailable in the market one generation can be quickly eclipsed by a big innovation in the next. (Just look what iOS did to everything that came before.)

Unlike Palm, who let PalmOS wither and Microsoft who condemned Windows Mobile to obsolescence, Apple has a history of not only competing against the industry at large but against their own past efforts as well.

On the eve iOS 5, we have more incremental feature improvements coming our way, along with the far more ambitious move to iCloud. It’s keeping up a relentless pace of innovation meant to keep a legion of competitors from catching up. But will that be enough maintain Apple’s lead into 2012, given that competitors like Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich, BlackBerry’s QNX, Microsoft’s Windows Phone, and potentially even Amazon’s next Kindle are increasingly less than 33 minutes away?

Atari Teases Atari Arcade Controller For iPad

Atari has just updated some software to tease a new, Atari branded alternative, and we’re hoping it’ll be a cheaper version of the iCade. As spotted by href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/05/atari-to-release-an-official-atari-arcade-joystick-for-ipad">MacRumors, a recent update href="http://appshopper.com/games/ataris-greatest-hits">to Atari’s Greatest Hits includes the following info:

Nokia, on the other hand, will decline from 100 million in 2010 to 74.4 million in 2011.

App Giveaway: Alert Notes for iPhone

Alert Notes is a nifty little apps that converts normal, plain English notes into reminders.

If you’re a fast typer, Alert Notes is probably quicker than other apps that require you to turn dials to select times and dates. I love how Alert Notes recognize contacts but doesn’t make to choose anything about the contact until the moment you need access to the information. It’s one less step to the alert-created process.

This app understands dates, relative dates and phrases that indicate recurring alerts. It’s also smart enough to detect email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, URLs, names and initials from your Contacts for quick access later. It’s the ideal app to keep all those tidbits you want to be reminded of later.

Update includes:

GameStop To Carry iOS Devices?

The trade-in program href="http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/events/idevice/default.aspx?cid=eml_10000286">has already gone live, and with all the usual caveats about functionality, external damage, and whatnot. Sprint Installing Repeaters In Apple Stores?

One of the bigger rumors about the upcoming iPhone 5 launch is that href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/?s=sprint">it’ll land on Sprint too, expanding Apple’s phone into at three of the USA’s four major carriers (and who knows, maybe T-Mobile as well). Building on that rumor href="http://www.beatweek.com/news/9243-sprint-preps-for-iphone-5-by-installing-repeaters-inside-apple-stores/">is a report that Sprint is installing signal repeaters inside Apple Stores. BeatWeek’s source told them:

“One thing I can tell you is that the electrical contractor that I work for is contracted to install Sprint “repeaters” at The Domain. There is a Apple Store at The Domain. One of the “repeaters” is to be installed INSIDE the Apple Store. There is to be a total of 5 “repeaters” installed. The equipment is CDMA and 4G (Sprint)”

It was recently rumored that href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/is-apple-installing-lte-readers-in-their-stores/2011/08/16/">AT&T and Verizon were installing LTE repeaters/readers in Apple Stores too. These repeaters are often installed to give strong connections for customers in the store, making sure that their phone works its best while still on the premises, and they don’t notice that they usually only get 1 bar until they leave.

Atari set to release its own joystick base for iPad

Hidden within the recent update to Atari’s Greatest Hits app is a rather tasty snippet of information. It points to an Atari branded joystick add-on for the iPad. The joystick and base is set to be called the Arcade-Duo and has a retro arcade type red balled joystick and four buttons.

Relive the fast-action excitement of all your arcade favorites, like Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command. Simply connect your iPad to Atari’s Greatest Hits app for Duo, and you’re ready to share the fun with family and friends anywhere!

It appears to be a similar concept to the iCade although that does have a retro arcade cabinet too. Looking at the two designs this one may come in at a much more favorable price than the $99 iCade. The only availability information is that it is “coming soon”.

These type of accessories only work with certain games which makes them very limited. I would welcome a solution for an Apple supported system; that way all developers could get on-board and offer support for the majority of suitable games! Would you use a joystick system if more games were supported or do you think the on screen controls are good enough for gaming?
