Our music comes from the following sources:

Netflix’s new pricing model starts, Starz content stops

Netflix's new pricing model starts, Starz content stops

Today’s the day when Netflix‘s new, and potentially more pricy, split DVD/streaming plans start, and also the day Starz says they’ve broken off talk for Netflix to carry their content.

Starz said it made the decision to “protect the premium nature of our brand by preserving the appropriate pricing and packaging of our exclusive and highly valuable content,” according to a statement issued today.

And once again I’ll counter by saying when Hollywood thinks they’re content is undervalued, they fail to realize it’s being massively overvalued already.

Consumers have shown time and time again that they’re willing to pay a fair price for the content they want to enjoy, when they want to enjoy it. Hollywood has shown time and time again that they consider customers the enemy. But if Starz isn’t available where the market wants it, the market will turn to something else, or will find an alternate way to get it. Apple figured this out years ago with iTunes Music. We’ll see if Hollywood ever does, or if the greed of past, artificially inflated business models blinds them to the potential of new, consumer friendly ones.

Jetpack Joyride App Review – Halfbrick’s Best Yet

Barry Steakfries probably shouldn’t be so curious and heroic. Just saying based on past experience from playing some of Halfbrick’s (developer of widely popular, Fruit Ninja) games; it seems as if he’s found yet another absurd way to threaten his existence, and that’s in the newest game to be added to Halfbrick’s collection of iOS games, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/app/jetpack-joyride/id457446957?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/jetpack-joyride/id457446957?mt=8">Jetpack Joyride.

I’ve got this gem of a game in my hands for the better of the past day and a half, and it’s been an absolute thrill to play. If you saw the trailer that we href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/halfbricks-new-game-jetpack-joyride-releases-september-1st">posted just the other day, then you’re probably familiar with the twist Jetpack Joyride has to offer on the popular casual genre seen across the App Store in many varieties nowadays.

You’ll control the, in my opinion, Chuck Norris-esque character, Barry Steakfries, who has gotten too curious (yet again) and has found himself in a secret underground lair flying a jetpack for the pure purpose of receiving satisfaction. You can see the trailer if you’ve got any question having to do with just exactly why he decided to go steal a jetpack being tested on from a bunch of scientists. Oops, did I spoil it?

    width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Jzxi8nid9BQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

So basically you’re in control of this seemingly-crazy dude who has the urge to be flying a jetpack despite the fact that there are tons of obstacles littering his path every “meter” of the way. You’ll have to get pretty familiar with your iPhone’s touchscreen, which is made easy thanks to the one-button control scheme, because the game involves ton of tricky maneuvers and such to get out of the way of lasers, zappers, moving lasers, moving zappers, rockets and a whole lot more.

You can also collect coins while flying as well as spin coins, officially speaking, which will give you one spin on a roulette full of perks after you die. There is also an item that will change Barry’s jetpack into one of many different vehicles, which will have different ways to be controlled, and will switch back to the jetpack once you collide with an obstacle.

You’ve really got to admire the evident time that was put into the game. First off, the visuals are absolutely stunning. They retain Halfbrick’s wonderful pixel artwork, while also staying polished and bright. Second, depth is added to the game with the various windows giving way to scenes of piles of coins and such off in the distance, which is great. And third, you’ve really got to admire the fact that the scientists are dumb enough to run straight into electric zappers parallel to the ground and get zapped by them; pure Halfbrick humor./> href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/jetpack-joyride-app-review-this-doesnt-even-need-alliteration-to-sound-cool/attachment/jetpackjoyridescreen_05" rel="attachment wp-att-21902">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/JetpackJoyrideScreen_05-e1314914133514.jpg" alt="" title="JetpackJoyrideScreen_05" width="640" height="426" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-21902" />/> Not only does the game have an almost infinite amount of replay value, but it’s also got a ton of missions that can be completed while playing the main meat of the game. At every moment, there are three challenges available to be completed, which will result in gaining stars to ultimately rank up. Each time you collect a certain amount of stars, you’ll rank up to the next class starting with some sort of noob-analogous rank and ending in a professional-analogous rank. Each time you gain an additional rank, you’ll earn coins to be spent on items in an in-game shop. In the shop, you can purchase different outfits for Barry, different types of jetpacks, upgrades to the multiple vehicles, single-use perks that can help you get further and more. It’s a challenge to purchase some of the more expensive items, (even though you also collect coins while playing), and I’d really like to see new additions to the inventory. It would’ve been even cooler if the different jetpacks had perks.

That said, even though the game’s elements are pretty much completely random and do correlate with one another, in most instances, Halfbrick has done it again by creating yet another onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/app/jetpack-joyride/id457446957?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/jetpack-joyride/id457446957?mt=8">$0.99, casual time-waster that will be sure to suck you in for hours on end – 2,000 hours to be exact, which is believable considering they’ve got some enticing gameplay, more missions than you can shake a stick at, and a store loaded to the brim with awesome items.

I can almost guarantee that Jetpack Joyride will in fact be your cup of tea, regardless of the types of games that you do like. To say the least, it’s an absolute superb application that literally made me want to fly all the way over to Australia and give every one of the Halfbrick guys a huge hug.

Apple Releases iOS 5 Beta 7

    href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screen-shot-2011-06-06-at-1.41.35-pm.jpeg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23436" title="screen-shot-2011-06-06-at-1.41.35-pm" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/screen-shot-2011-06-06-at-1.41.35-pm.jpeg" alt="" width="247" height="259" />

With iOS 5 generally expected to launch either this month or next, the iOS 5 beta releases continue their eternal march towards “release candidate” status. Yesterday saw Apple release iOS 5 beta 7.

href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/31/apple-seeds-ios-5-beta-7-to-developers/?">9to5 Mac has a full changelog, and we’ll be sure to tell you if anything interesting comes to light from this release. 9to5 has already identified a couple of new features, like the ability to WiFi sync multiple Macs on a single phone, and more fully integrated Nuance text/speech software.

Anyone want to start a deadpool over how many betas there are going to end up being? This seems like a rather huge number so far.

Apple’s New iPad 2 Ad “Learn”

The newest iPad 2 ad from Apple is titled “Learn” and shows off the host of educational apps available for the platform. Lots of great apps about learning new skills, languages, and just generally embracing the wonders of the world.

Nice to see for once they’ve released an ad that doesn’t automatically make you feel like a bad person for not calling your mother.

Labor Day Sale Sees Gameloft Drop 8 Titles To $0.99

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.aohzhkif.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23447" title="mzl.aohzhkif.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/mzl.aohzhkif.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />It’s a holiday of some description, which means someone’s going to drop the price on their games substantially! This time it’s Gameloft, who have href="http://blog.gameloft.com/index.php/2011/09/01/labor-day-sales/">slashed the prices on eight titles down to just $0.99:

    Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tom-clancys-rainbow-six-shadow/id413302408?mt=8">iPhone / href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tom-clancys-rainbow-six-shadow/id440315767?mt=8">iPad/> Shadow Guardian – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shadow-guardian/id400717781?mt=8">iPhone / href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shadow-guardian-hd/id400718312?mt=8">iPad/> Prince of Persia: Warrior Within – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/prince-persia-lame-du-guerrier/id360182980?mt=8">iPhone / href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/prince-persia-lame-du-guerrier/id391501565?mt=8">iPad/> Zombie Infection – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zombie-infection/id360178712?mt=8">iPhone / href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zombie-infection-hd/id371111440?mt=8">iPad/> James Cameron’s Avatar – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/james-camerons-avatar/id343687281?mt=8">iPhone – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/james-camerons-avatar/id343687281?mt=8">iPad/> Rogue Planet – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rogue-planet/id337568038?mt=8">iPhone/> Action Pack – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gameloft-action-pack/id371113408?mt=8">iPhone/> Sports Pack –  href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gameloft-sports-pack/id359161801?mt=8">iPhone

What’s kinda cool is that two of these titles are multipacks. Action Pack combines three of Gamelofts older titles: Hero of Sparta, Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes and Blades of Fury. The Sports Pack has Let’s Golf!, Real Tennis & Pro Baseball.

All told, that’s 12 titles you can grab for $8, a deal by anyone’s approximation. Sure, it’s Summer out and you could spend your three day weekend outside enjoying the sun and whatnot. Or you could stare at your iPhone’s screen for hours at a time. Either works.

TiPb Asks: Do you want more variety in your iPhone hardware?

iPhone 5 to have metal back, less than 4-inch display?

On last night’s iPhone Live podcast we discussed the just announced Samsung Galaxy S II models and what, if any, challenge they may pose for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5. One of the big differences is that, while iPhones are pretty much the same on every carrier around the world (Verizon iPhone antenna and firmware version being the only current exception), Samsung Galaxy S phones have varied a lot from network to network.

Some have keyboards and others don’t. Some have bigger or smaller screens. They often have completely different casings from one carrier to another. Some carriers work out deals to take out Google Search and put in Microsoft’s Bing. Some pre-load carrier-specific crapware. Maybe some will one day have Amazon Market instead of the Android Market — like the JooJooPhone!

The bottom line is, with an iPhone you can buy one on pretty much any carrier you want, or unlocked directly from Apple, hook it up to iTunes (or soon, iCloud) and get your iPhone just the way you left it — same apps, same interface, zero learning curve. The price we pay is that everything is the same. There’s no variety.

With Samsung and some other Android devices, you can change things up as often as you’re willing to switch networks or get a new phone. You get almost endless variety but you may have to re-learn interfaces or re-buy apps.

I prefer Apple’s approach. I don’t want the cognitive load that comes with carrier-specific hardware and software. I want the device and the OS to get out of my — and my apps’ — way. (I also trust carriers way less than I trust Apple.) But I definitely see the appeal of changing things up, of having phones as fashion.

Would you like to see a different iPhone on AT&T compared to Verizon? Square on one, round on the other? AT&T iPhone 5 vs. Spring iPhone 4 II Epic 4G? Do you like the single, iconic iPhone the way it is or do you think it’s time for Apple to let carriers mix things up?

Apple promotes Eddy Cue to Senior VP of Internet Software and Services

Eddy Cue, Senior VP of Internet Software and Services, Apple

9to5Mac scored a copy of an internal memo from new CEO, Tim Cook, announcing that Apple’s Eddy Cue is getting a promotion from VP of iTunes, MobileMe, and App Store, to Senior VP of Internet Software and Services, and putting him on the exec team.

Team, It is my pleasure to announce the promotion of Eddy Cue to Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services. Eddy will report to me and will serve on Apple’s executive management team.

Eddy oversees Apple’s industry-leading content stores including the iTunes Store, the revolutionary App Store and the iBookstore, as well as iAd and Apple’s innovative iCloud services.

He is a 22-year Apple veteran and leads a large organization of amazing people. He played a major role in creating the Apple online store in 1998, the iTunes Music Store in 2003 and the App Store in 2008.

Apple is a company and culture unlike any other in the world and leaders like Eddy get that. Apple is in their blood. Eddy and the entire executive management team are dedicated to making the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

Please join me in congratulating Eddy on this significant and well-deserved promotion. I have worked with Eddy for many years and look forward to working with him even closer in the future.

The move changes the top line of execs showcased on Apple’s official bios page as well, so read into that what you may. (i.e. Voltron’s got a new yellow lion arm)

Cue was famously put in charge of MobileMe following its less than stellar launch, and Setve Jobs’ subsequent march through the halls with a flame thrower. He also took the stage with Rupert Murdoch to launch the Daily and unveil Apple’s subscription news service.

Best wishes and congratulations to Eddy Cue in his new roll. Can’t wait to see what it brings us.

Did Apple Lose An iPhone 5 Prototype At A Bar?

Wait, what? href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20099899-37/apple-loses-another-unreleased-iphone-exclusive/">According to CNET, late July saw an Apple employee accidentally lose an unreleased iPhone prototype at a bar in the Mission district of San Francisco. According to their sources, it was accidentally left at a tequila bar called Cava22, but after that its path is unclear.

Apparently a day or two after it was lost, Apple contacted the police, and they used “Find My iPhone” to track it to a home, but that it wasn’t there, and that no one at the residence admitted knowledge.

CNET seems to think it may have ended up on Craigslist under the guise of a normal iPhone for sale.

href="http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-lost-another-iphone-in-a-bar-manager-knows-nothing-about-it/111557">CultOfMac went and talked to the owner of the bar, who had no idea what had happened.

Okay, what are the chances that this happens two years in a row? Seriously, they lost an iPhone 5 prototype at a bar? Does Apple need to institute a “no drinking” policy?

It’s also worth thinking about the fact that this phone must not have had a radical redesign, or else whoever found/stole it would cotton on to its importance, rather than just hocking it on Craigslist.

Apple Already Has A Web Based iOS Diagnostic Service

    style="text-align: center;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/iosdiag-110831.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23443" title="iosdiag-110831" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/iosdiag-110831.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="438" />

Yesterday, a few rumors sprung up that Apple was working on a web based iOS diagnostic service, one that would potentially let you skip visiting the Genius Bar, or at least make it much more efficient. href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/08/31/apple_already_using_web_based_ios_diagnostics_could_eliminate_trips_to_store.html">What AppleInsider found out is that Apple isn’t developing it, it’s already in place.

Apparently how it works is that the Genius generates a five-digit session number on the iOS diagnostic site. The customer then points Mobile Safari at  ”diags://session_id” at okays the T&S to give the Genius access to their information. The service is said to show the same data that can be seen when they plug in your iPhone or iPad at the Genius Bar, which is to say:

iOS software version, hardware battery health, any application crashes or system hangs, unexpected restarts, improper shutdowns, dropped calls, modem resets and more. This person also said the software can detect whether a user has “jailbroken” their iOS device, allowing it to run unauthorized code in a potentially warranty voiding process.

If it makes visiting the Apple Store less crazy, I’m all for it.

Apple’s Life After the Legacy of Steve Jobs

Let’s face it: if all of Apple’s success and innovation could be attributed to one man, it would be Steve Jobs. Though of course, Apple is a huge corporation of 50,000 employees so above all everybody shares a piece of the credit. With Steve Jobs resigning from the company, one has to wonder how Apple will move on without its key player. He will remain within the company as chairman thus he still has a say and a watchful eye on operations, which is likely part of an extensive plan. He may just have left at the perfect time.

With its huge array of popular products and piles of billions of dollars, Apple is in a better position than they have ever been in. In fact, they are doing better than practically any other company. Steve waited for Apple to revolutionize a plethora of markets before stepping down, rather than just a few corners of the technology world. After all, the iPhone and onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad are still very recent inventions yet they are household names and items. He also made sure that they every product developed during his reign as CEO is reaching their potential, as is the case with Mac OS X compared to previous versions of the Macintosh operating system. All of the groundwork is in place for Apple to continue on better and further-extending than ever.

Rather than holding onto the CEO position until his eventual passing-away, Steve chose to pass the torch on to the successor he had selected, Tim Cook, at a time that he can still monitor that successor’s work and Apple’s progress then make changes or provide advice as seen fit. If the success of a company can be attributed to one man, that one man will not allow his life’s work to fail. I am sure that Tim Cook was very carefully chosen and diligently mentored.

Even though he is not CEO anymore, for the foreseeable future Steve Jobs will still be the face and name behind Apple. It can not be said that he has presented his final keynote. Nor that he has provided his last vision for a product. More importantly, his DNA will be in every Apple product planned for the coming years as well as bigger projects in-development for future decades.

Truth be told, the 50,000 employees that have contributed to current products will move on fine as long as proper direction is provided. If so many people have already worked towards game-changing products, they can continue on as they had before. Jobs’ visions will be a significant loss, but he has hand-chosen additional visionaries.

Now seems to be the right time for Steve Jobs to step down as CEO, with Apple as a leading electronics company and him being able to watch how the company operates so that changes can be made if necessary to ensure a strong future. He will be missed, he has left a significant legacy and is doing everything in his power to make sure it will only be improved upon.

iOS 5 beta 7 ends iTunes Match download vs streaming confusion?

iOS 5 beta 7 ends iTunes Match download vs streaming confusion?

Looks like iTunes Match is no longer downstreaming — streamloading? — or whatever weird blend of marketing, legalspeak, and technology led users to see stream-like behavior where Apple claimed there was none. Now with the just released iOS 5 beta 7 it downloads, plays while downloading, but stays on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch after it has downloaded for repeat local playback.

And yes, that may mean you now have to manually manage storage on your device by deleting older downloads to make room for new ones, then deleting the new ones to make room for re-downloading the old ones again, as you so wish. Just like App Store apps work today.

If iTunes Match stays this way through release, does it clear up the confusion or just make things more complicated for Rene’s mom?
