iPhone 5 case leak-a-palooza

iPhone 5 case leak-a-palooza

According to M.I.C. Gadget, those iPhone 5 cases we caught a peak of earlier in the week are pretty much “everywhere” in China.

What we are hearing now is that the Chinese case makers are distributing their iPhone 5 cases.

Again, we won’t know for certain what iPhone 5 looks like until Steve Jobs or another Apple exec holds it up on stage this fall, but these manufacturers certainly seem confident enough in their knowledge of Apple’s iPhone 5 plans to risk their money on producing mass quantities of these Skittle-colored cases — with the mute switch on the “wrong” side…

Never miss an appointment with Calendar with Alarm for iPhone

Calendar with Alarm is an iPhone calendar app that, well, lets you set alarms.

Never miss an appointment again! CalAlarm is an elegantly designed user friendly calendar that adds an alarm to your appointments, so that you are no longer committed to the two short standard calendar beeps.

It drives me crazy that the iPhone’s native calendar only allows two alerts for an event. For entries that require more alerts, I normally add them to MobileMe in iCal on my Mac. Calendar with Alarm seems like a much better solution.

Calendar with Alarm is available on the iPhone for $1.99. Screenshots after the break.

Google tweaks iPad search experience

Google tweaks iPad search experience

Google is continuing their bold new design initiative, tweaking the search experience on iPad for web results, image results, and more.

The search button located below the search box provides quick access to specific types of results like Images, Videos, Places, Shopping and more. Just tap to open the search menu and select an option to see results in one category.

For image results, we focused on improvements that enhance the viewing experience such as enlarged image previews, continuous scroll, and faster loading of image thumbnails.

AT&T Confirms Data Throttling

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/att-to-start-throttling-users-in-october/2011/07/28/">Confirming what we heard yesterday, AT&T has issued a statement saying they will in fact start throttling data for heavy users starting October 1. So even if you thought yourself safe to use large amounts of data via your grandfathered plan, now you have to worry about losing your speed too.

Here’s the full statement:

An Update for Our Smartphone Customers With Unlimited Data Plans

Like other wireless companies, we’re taking steps to manage exploding demand for mobile data.  Many experts agree the country is facing a serious wireless spectrum crunch.  We’re responding on many levels, including investing billions in our wireless network this year and working to acquire additional network capacity.  We’re also taking additional, more immediate measures to help address network congestion.

One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans – those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest data users in a billing period.  In fact, these customers on average use 12 times more data than the average of all other smartphone data customers.  This step will not apply to our 15 million smartphone customers on a tiered data plan or the vast majority of smartphone customers who still have unlimited data plans.

Starting October 1, smartphone customers with unlimited data plans may experience reduced speeds once their usage in a billing cycle reaches the level that puts them among the top 5 percent of heaviest data users.  These customers can still use unlimited data and their speeds will be restored with the start of the next billing cycle.  Before you are affected, we will provide multiple notices, including a grace period.

This change will never impact the vast majority of our customers, and is designed to create a better service experience for all.

The amount of data usage of our top 5 percent of heaviest users varies from month to month, based on the usage of others and the ever-increasing demand for mobile broadband services.  To rank among the top 5 percent, you have to use an extraordinary amount of data in a single billing period.

There will be no changes for the vast majority of customers.  It’s not how much time you spend using your device, it’s what you do with it.  You can send or receive thousands of emails, surf thousands of Web pages and watch hours of streaming video every month and not be in the top 5 percent of data users.

Typically what puts someone in the top 5 percent is streaming very large amounts of video and music daily over the wireless network, not Wi-Fi.  Streaming video apps, remote web camera apps, sending large data files (like video) and some online gaming are examples of applications that can use data quickly.  Using Wi-Fi doesn’t create wireless network congestion or count toward your wireless data usage.  AT&T smartphone customers have unlimited access to our entire Wi-Fi network, with more than 26,000 hotspots, at no additional cost.  They can also use Wi-Fi at home and in the office.

The bottom line is our customers have options. They can choose to stay on their unlimited plans and use unlimited amounts of data, but may experience reduced speeds at some point if they are an extraordinarily heavy data user. If speed is more important, they may wish to switch to a tiered usage plan, where customers can pay for more data if they need it and will not see reduced speeds.

But even as we pursue this additional measure, it will not solve our spectrum shortage and network capacity issues.  Nothing short of completing the T-Mobile merger will provide additional spectrum capacity to address these near term challenges.

What’s interesting is that this doesn’t put a hard limit on how much data you use, just if you’re in the “top 5%”

More Leaked Cases Hint At Larger, Thinner iPhone 5

style="text-align: left;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/header.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22816" title="header" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/header.jpg" alt="" width="524" height="298" />href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/29/new-iphone-5-cases-indicate-a-thinner-but-half-inch-wider-and-longer-frame">9to5Mac has another set of leaked iPhone 5 cases on their hands, and these ones actually give some pretty solid information. These floppy silicone cases show a number of features that we’ve heard discussed about the iPhone 5, but weren’t sure about.

The big thing here is that if these are correct, the iPhone 5 will be bigger than the iPhone 4. The case is 5 inches tall by 2.8 inches wide, according to its specs, so the iPhone 5 must be very close to this in order to dit inside snugly. By comparison, the iPhone 4 is 4.5 inches tall and 2.31 inches wide, an increase of half-an-inch in both directions. The cases also seem to suggest a much thinner phone.

The other change? The volume rocker has switched sides, and is now opposite the lock switch, rather than next to it.

So readers, what’s your verdict?

AT&T Will Sell You An iPhone 3GS For $0.01, But It Won’t Be Pretty

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the cheapest I have ever seen an iPhone for sale. href="http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/packages/packages-details.jsp?q_package=sku4980475">One penny, from AT&T. That’s down from $99.99 for an iPhone 3GS. What’s the catch? It’s a refurb, and it’s not in great condition. Marked as “Refurb Cosmetic Blemish”, it would have a non-specified problem with the case — I imagine a scuff or scrape — that marks it down so significantly. You’ll also only get a 90 day warranty and limited AppleCare.

You think this is AT&T clearing out old stock? This might be a move of theirs to get rid of everything possible before the next iPhone debuts, and the iPhone 4 drops in price.

You’re still stuck on a contract, though.

Indie Developers vs. Large Corporations

Indie, or independent, game developers are often recognized on the iOS platform. Many of them are in the process of releasing games or have already released games onto the App Store, and these games, with all honesty, seem to best games made by larger corporations. I’m not sure if it’s their status of being independent or if it’s just their dependency on their games that makes them put so much time and effort into their projects, but it it certainly better than some other projects I’ve seen made by major corporations.

I’m not saying that large corporations don’t put time and effort into their endeavors on the App Store, but I’m just saying that it seems as if indie developers put a bit more. Take a look at Gameloft, for example; their games are extremely well done and well received. But have you seen them ever update their games with additional content? Can you name one title that doesn’t very closely resemble a console title made by another company? I”m not picking solely on them, but other companies as well.

I don’t want to be bias towards corporations, but I know what an indie developer goes through to get a game out there. They have to work with no pay for months on-end and then if their game is a flop, they’re pretty much broke. There’s a documentary coming out soon (onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.indiegamethemovie.com/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.indiegamethemovie.com/">Indie Game: The Movie), that focuses on the hardships of a few indie developers developing for the XBLA, so if you want a better account of everything I’ve said, check it out when it’s released.

So, the next time you go browsing the App Store for a game, check out one made by someone you’ve never hard of rather than by someone who is well-known. I know first-hand that there are an absolute endless amount of good, worthy titles deserving attention – many of them aren’t even more than a buck. And the quality of most will probably be more evident. #longliveindiegames

MySaver Will Protect Your Dock Connector

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Screen-Shot-2011-07-29-at-12.03.33-PM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22811" title="Screen Shot 2011-07-29 at 12.03.33 PM" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Screen-Shot-2011-07-29-at-12.03.33-PM.jpg" alt="" width="553" height="403" />

If you’re like me, you probably have a handful of Apple cables, all of which have split at exactly the same point: the weak spot right near the device plug. My MacBook Pro cable and a bunch of iPhone and iPad cables have all split at exactly the same point — and usually at the world’s most awkward time.

A new Kickstarter project aims to stop that from happeningy. The href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1499810396/mysaver-protection-for-your-ipad-iphone-and-ipod-c">MySaver is a metal and silicone case which locks around that incredibly fragile part of the cord, giving you a way to grip without putting undue stress on the join.

It comes in two flavors: a complete replacement cable called the MySaver: Pro, which will set you back a $10 donation if you’re one of the first 100, or $19 after that, and the MySaver:DIY which snaps over your existing cable, and costs just $8.

I’ve split enough of my iPhone cables through just general use that this sounds like a pretty good idea to me, and probably worth dropping $10 on.

Review: Power Support’s Black Air Jacket Set

Ultra thin, ultra light, ultra hyped and rightly so. The onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/">Air Jacket Set case from Power Support USA is a hard-case for the iPod Touch 4th generation measuring under 1mm in thickness and weighing almost nothing – that’s how they manage to sell this case, and it’s certainly a valid selling point.

Through a slick finish, thin looks and more, Power Support’s onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/">Air Jacket Set never ceases to amaze and impress. It’s yet another case available for the iPod Touch 4th generation.

In the nice packaging, another film is also included for use with your iPod. The adhesive side easily sticks to your iPod without trouble, and is meant to protect against grit, dirt, etc. I wouldn’t completely rely on the case for saving your iPod Touch from every single accident, considering its extra thin size, which is one of the major pluses to the case (size). But knowing that you can’t simply let the case take the fall helps you learn not to drop your iPod as often as you normally would.

If you’re not looking for something that will instantly transform your iPod into something bulky and not ideal for carrying around, then the Air Jacket is perfect for you. It’s available in two colors, clear and black, and sells for $34.95, a bit on the more expensive side when it comes to cases. Regardless, if you’ve got the money just burning a hole in your pocket, it’s worth the purchase.

Apple now owns 66% of mobile profits

Apple now owns 66% of mobile profits

Horace Dediu of Asymco has taken a look at the financial results of Apple, Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, HTC, and RIM and put together a comparison of who is making profit and how much. Apple, perhaps not surprisingly, has gone from almost 0 in 2007 to 66% in the latest quarter, 2011.

Three companies which captured 11% of the profits before the modern smartphone era started (four years ago!) now capture 84% of the profits. Only one global brand phone vendor selling non-smart voice-oriented feature phones is still profitable however, as we shall see later, the only reason profits still exist for any vendor is due to the strength of their smartphone portfolio.

The pie chart above tells the story, and for more details and graphics, hit the link below.

Calvetica Releases Old Calendar App For Free As “Notvetica”

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.wlhqjdhh.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22798" title="mzl.wlhqjdhh.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.wlhqjdhh.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

The immensely popular href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/calvetica-calendar/id385862462?mt=8">Calvetica iOS app recently had a ground up redesign, completely retooling the look and feel of the app for version 4.0. Let’s just say that the response was mixed, especially among iPhone users, who found the new interface a useless clutter. Since the update, the ratings for the app have dropped a full star, and people are not happy.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.qckoffsm.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22799" title="mzl.qckoffsm.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.qckoffsm.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

So they released the older version for free. Meet href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/notvetica/id451926697?mt=8">Notvetica — it’s version 3.7 of Calvetica, it’s a free download, and there won’t be any support or updates for it. But if you absolutely loathe version 4 of Calvetica, here’s a great way to go back. And it’s currently rated as five stars in the app star.

In Two Weeks The iPad Outsells What The Xoom Does In A Year

As href="http://www.splatf.com/2011/07/xoom-shipments/">Dan Frommer points out, Motorola has released information saying that they expect to sell 1.3-1.5 million Xooms this year, and have shipped 440,000 Xooms this quarter.

9.2 million iPads were sold last quarter, that’s 1.5 million units every two weeks — and for months you couldn’t get hold of one for love or money.

That’s right, every two weeks the iPad 2 sells what Motorola plans to ship in an entire year with the Xoom.

Now, do you think Samsung is doing much better than that with the Galaxy Tab? Or how about the Asus Transformer? Has anyone ever seen an Android tablet in the wild? Because I sure haven’t.

No 64GB iPhone 5?

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/9to5maciphone5.png">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22805" title="9to5maciphone5" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/9to5maciphone5.png" alt="" width="478" height="117" />href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/28/iphone-5-shows-up-in-korean-carrier-kts-system-16-gb-and-32-gb-capacities/">9to5 Mac’s sources have pointed them towards what appears to be an entry in Korean carrier KT’s system for the iPhone 5. What’s interesting here is that the entries appear to be for 16GB and 32GB only, there doesn’t seem to be one for a 64GB iPhone 5.

Users with large audio or video libraries have been calling for years for larger  capacities in their iOS devices, because not everyone want to drag around an iPod Classis — currently the only really high capacity device in Apple’s lineup. The build-up to the iPhone 4 launch had a lot of people hoping for a 64GB model, which is happening again with the iPhone 5. These SKUs seem to suggest that there won’t be one this time, either.

Now, I wouldn’t lose all hope. These could very easily be just placeholder SKUs, and we won’t know for sure until this thing is officially announced. Don’t count the 64GB iPhone out of the race quite yet.

iPhone 5 appears in Korean carriers inventory system but only in 16GB and 32GB flavors?

Here we go again, another day another iPhone 5 rumor. This time, 9to5 Mac has received an alleged screen capture from KT’s (Korea Telecom) internal stock inventory system. The screen shot clearly shows SKU’s (stock-keeping units) for AIP5 which we assume stands for Apple iPhone 5 followed by a number.

The number appears to represent the GB capacity of the iPhone 5 however we are widely expecting that a 64GB version would be released this time; but there is no mention of it. What is even more confusing is the third model in the screen capture; it appears that this is an iPhone 5 without any storage capacity? 9to5 Mac believes that this is a carrier unlocked model.

Before we lose all hope of an iPhone 5 64GB model, these SKU’s are just place holders and it may be a case that Apple is keeping the specifications under wraps until it is officially announced. I know a lot of people who are pinning their hopes on an iPhone 5 with 64GB of storage. Personally I have a 16GB version and it still has a few GB remaining.

Plants Vs Zombies Finally Gets Retina Display Support

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.gwcfxpzb.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22795" title="mzl.gwcfxpzb.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.gwcfxpzb.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

The supremely addictive href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/plants-vs.-zombies/id350642635?mt=8">Plants vs Zombies iPhone app has finally done what they should have done a year ago — pushed out Retina Display support. New with update 1.7 comes higher resolution assets that won’t look like a mess of pixels on your iPhone 4′s screen. Here’s the official update announcement, courtesy of Crazy Dave:

Greetings Zombie Apocalypse Homestead Defenders.

Nintendo Already Dropping 3DS Price by $80, We Explain Why

After launching in the United States on March 25 of this year to a limited selection of games and a lukewarm response, Nintendo is dropping the price of its 3DS, the company’s newest handheld gaming device, by $80. That brings its original price of $250 to a very reasonable $170.

The 3DS is Nintendo’s first real successor to the hit DS device, with brand new, improved hardware packing better performance and a display capable of displaying 3D images. Its auto-stereoscopic display means that games can have a real sense of depth akin to the 3D technology that most theaters have adopted, minus the glasses. Though it has not been as game-changing (excuse my pun) in the industry as the original DS, which introduced touchscreen gaming to the mobile market, Nintendo can boast how this is the first consumer implementation of a glasses-free 3D effect.

Nintendo is making quite a bold move so early on in the 3DS’s lifespan. It is undoubtedly a result of the significant user base that has purchased Nintendo’s previous mobile devices but has yet to make the upgrade. Disappointing worldwide sales of 3.61 million in six months really, really pale in comparison to what Nintendo’s predecessor device, the Nintendo DS, has accomplished. In six and a half years along with multiple iterations based on the same hardware, the DS has sold 146 million.

It is no secret that Apple is dominating the handheld gaming market, and it seems like iOS is not going anywhere. The iPod touch, a multi-functional device which starts at $300 for a current model, has sold over 60 million units in three and a half years. Hundreds of millions more have an iOS device of some form that feature an eclectic library of games downloadable from the App Store for prices that typically do not surpass $6.99. With the capability of smartphones being able to provide a superior experience to many handheld gaming devices, the need for separate hardware cannot be justified to the same onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.onlinenursingdegree.net');" target="_blank" title="degree" href="http://www.onlinenursingdegree.net">degree as could in past years when Nintendo has seen success.

Of course, the best reasons to get a 3DS are to own one of the first devices featuring a display with a glasses-free 3D effect and because we won’t see a Mario or Zelda game of any kind on the iPhone anytime soon.

The updated price will go into effect on August 12. Is the economical price enough to sway you towards a 3DS purchase? Could it complement the mobile gaming your iOS devices provide or do you find that the 3DS features a superior/inferior experience (especially price-wise)?

The Piano Apprentice app will even teach you how to read real music notation!

With an app and accessory like this, you can learn in your own time; which makes it much easier to fit it into a busy schedule.
