A Moving Eulogy Written By Mona Simpson

The NY Times has published a eulogy written by Steve Jobs sister, Mona Simpson. It’s a rare and moving look at Steve Jobs. You can read it href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/30/opinion/mona-simpsons-eulogy-for-steve-jobs.html">here.

Apple Airs Three More iPhone 4S Ads

Just launching today, Apple aired three new iPhone 4S advertisements on top of the already existent one that was originally aired last week. All three of these show off the iPhone 4S, of course, with Apple’s unique marketing technique. Watch them below.

All three of the ads appeal to the major features the iPhone 4S has to boast over the iPhone 4 (except for the first!): iCloud, the improved camera and Siri, respectively below.

I’ve had an in depth look at everything above, and can surely say Apple has effectively showcased them. That brings the total to what now? 4? Yes, two Siri ads, one iCloud and one camera. We’ll keep your posted on any future videos. Of course, the best way to do that would probably be to keep a tab on Apple’s YouTube channel. But I doubt you won’t want to refresh madly for anything Apple except the new iPhones, right?

OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW.

Steve Jobs: 1955 - 2011

The New York Times has published Mona Simpson’s eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs.

None of us knows for certain how long we’ll be here. On Steve’s better days, even in the last year, he embarked upon projects and elicited promises from his friends at Apple to finish them. Some boat builders in the Netherlands have a gorgeous stainless steel hull ready to be covered with the finishing wood. His three daughters remain unmarried, his two youngest still girls, and he’d wanted to walk them down the aisle as he’d walked me the day of my wedding.

We all — in the end — die in medias res. In the middle of a story. Of many stories.

Heart rending and hopeful, all of it.

Apple airs new iPhone 4S commercials: Siri, Camera, iCloud

Apple has released 3 more [iPhone 4S commercials](http://www.tipb.com/tag/iphone-4s-commercial], a second on Siri along with one focusing on the new 8mp, 1080p camera, and one on iCloud.

iCloud highlights automatic iTunes Music downloads across devices, Documents in the Cloud propagating updates, iBooks bookmarks copying themselves from iPhone to iPad, and Photo Stream taking the pictures from iPhone and popping them into iPhoto.

Camera shows the fast camera access from the Home screen, pinch-to-digitally-zoom, on-device cropping and red-eye removal, and Twitter integration.

Siri focuses on “what does may day look like”, pulling up the day’s appointments, “can I walk to the Belvedere Hotel from here”, pulling up Maps and directions, “read me that text”, reading the last last SMS message, and “do you think it will snow today”, bringing up the Weather app.

All of this, of course, “on the most amazing iPhone yet”. Check them out below.

App for That: How to wirelessly send videos from your iPhone to your iPad

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, Sean asks:

I am a father to a four and a half year old baby girl and keep up with a blog that I created shortly after she was born to chronicle my fathering experiences as well as her forays into the big wide world. I do all this blogging solely from my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I take pics and video on my iPhone and then write the blog posts on my iPad later in the day. Photos are not an issue as I just mail them to myself and then save them to my camera roll on the iPad, but Videos are the bugger! Is there an app out there that will let you save video to your iPad’s camera roll that you have captured with your iPhone?

Ideally, Photo Stream and iCloud would include the ability to sync videos between devices, but until that happens, we must go to the App Store to find a solution. To see what we found for Sean, follow along after the break!

PhotoSync [$1.99 - App Store link] is exactly what Sean needs! This little gem allows you to share photos and video from one device to another, including your Mac or Windows computer – and it’s super easy to do.

In Sean’s case, he would tap sync on his iPad and select the option to receive photos and video. Then on his iPhone, he’d tap the photo and videos he wants to transfer, and choose to sync them to another device. He’d then select his iPad from the list and start the sync.

The transfers rate is up to 2.5MB/sec, so depending on the size of the files, it can take a couple minutes, but syncing will continue in the background while Sean works on his blog post about his daughter.

This really is a fabulous app. I, like Sean, also blog photos and videos of my daughter and am thrilled with the discovery of Photo Sync.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Sean? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Head on over to our App and Game Feature Forum and let us know what you’re looking for. The TiPb community will do our best to find you just the right App for That!

Top 10 tips and tricks for new iPhone and iPad users

Top 10 tips and tricks for new iPhone and iPad users

New to iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and wondering what tips and tricks you really need to know to get started? Have friends and family that are new to iPhone and would love to have a handy link to send them? Look no further. Carefully curated below are TiPb’s top 10 tips and tricks for new users — everything you need to know to get going now.

Note: If you’re really brand new, check out our New User Guide first, the fastest way to get up and running and enjoying your new device.

How the Home button works: Navigation, Multitasking, Accessibility, Restart, Reboot, Recovery, and DFU

Because the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad have only a few buttons, the Home button does a ton of different things. So many, it can be confusing. A single click can move you around the home screens, a double click can put you into the Fast App Switcher, a triple click can launch Accessibility, a click and hold can start Voice Control on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 and Siri on iPhone 4S, and clicking and holding in combination with the Sleep/Wake button can restart or reboot your device, or put it into recovery or DFU (device firmware update) modes.

Wish you had a faster way to insert punctuation or get to caps or numbers on the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad virtual keyboard? Or a way to type just a few letters to get a whole word or sentence? iOS has a variety of time saving features built in to do just that.

How to protect your iPhone or iPad with a Passcode Lock

Your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad can store a lot of personal information, including your contacts, pictures, and personal messages. You can set up a simple 4-digit pin or a strong alphanumeric password to protect them.

How to take a screenshot with iPhone or iPad

Taking a screenshot is really easy with iOS and lets you quickly record or share a picture of anything and everything on your device — a video game high score, a cool feature in an app, a funny FaceTime moment, a bug you want to report. Just snap it and it goes right into your Camera Roll with all your other photos.

How to share a photo or video with iPhone or iPad

The only thing better than a great picture, an awesome video, or even a killer screenshot is sharing it with friends and family. Thanks to the action button, iPhone and iPad make this really easy.

How to setup iMessage and FaceTime on iPhone or iPad

If your friends and family also have iPhones, iPads, or iPod touches, you can avoid using your minutes, and get around costly SMS/MMS fees by using Apple’s free FaceTime video call and iMessage text and picture services.

How to use Siri on iPhone 4S

Siri is Apple’s new artificially intelligent virtual assistant and it can help get more done, more easily, on your iPhone 4S. While basic commands are great, Siri also understands context and relationships, and becomes even more powerful when you start putting together combinations.

How to tether to your iPhone Personal Hotspot

If your data plan allows it, you can tether your Windows or Mac laptop, or even your iPad to your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot and get them on the internet even when you’re away from Wi-Fi.

How to watch Flash videos on iPhone or iPad

Apple doesn’t support Adobe Flash video on iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Often this won’t matter and the video website will realize you’re on an iPhone or iPad and send you H.264/HTML 5 video instead, or if it’s for a TV network, you’ll be able to find an app in the App Store that does it directly. However, for smaller sites that aren’t compatible and don’t have their own apps, there are also several App Store apps that transform the Flash video to Apple-supported H.264 video on their servers, then send it to your iPhone or iPad so you can watch it.

iOS 5 beta 4 is an OTA update... if you can connect

Roughly once a year Apple releases a new version of their mobile operating system, like they’ve just done with iOS 5. Eventually, they’ll release a few minor enhancements, for example, and upcoming iOS 5.1. In between, they’ll likely release several bug fixes and performance improvements, for example, an upcoming iOS 5.0.1 or 5.0.2. Once that’s done, you can get future updates over Wi-Fi. If anything goes wrong, you can also easily restore (re-install) either from backup, or as a new device.

Because battery life problems are one of the biggest reasons people resort to restoring, here are some tips on troubleshooting that as well.

There you have them, TiPb’s top 10 tips and tricks for new iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad users. Did we miss any of your favorites, or not cover anything you’d really like to know? If so, add them to the comments! Meanwhile, here are some more of our favorite top 10s!

Siri hack now fully working on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch [video]

Siri has now been fully hacked onto an iPhone 4 and iPod touch and it now communicates with Apple’s servers to provide a 100% working solution. We told you a few weeks back that developer Steve Troughton-Smith was working on hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4 but had run into one or two hurdles. Well the main hurdle involved getting the hacked iPhone 4 to talk to Apple’s servers. That has now been overcome and it is now looking like a real possibility.

Talking to 9to5Mac, Steve Troughton-Smith revealed that the hack works across devices but requires files from an iPhone 4S that are not legally available to distribute. It also requires a validation token from a live jailbroken iPhone 4S. The whole hack involves around 20 steps to complete. Because of this, Steve Troughton-Smith doesn’t want to be involved in distributing the Siri port and has only done it to prove it can be done.

We don’t know at this point if others will take on the distribution and risk the wrath of Apple’s legal team, we will have to wait and see. In the mean time take a look at the two videos below. The first one shows the iPhone 4 running Siri side by side with an iPhone 4S and the second video shows Siri running on an iPod touch.
