Standing in the “Lap” of Luxury

Renegade Concepts, Lap Pro Finally Offers a Stand for Tablets That Meets All Needs

Let me begin with this:  I am the inventor, designer and owner of this product.  As a result, this article is nothing more than a statement of specifics and functions.  It would be unethical of me to review my own merchandise.  So what you read from this point on, will concern what the product is, what it does, and how it functions.  There will be no opinions or comparisons.  But I will say for those who have read my previous reviews, I am extremely particular and with that in mind and for the sake of my own integrity, you can bet I mean business because I felt I was forced to create this stand out of sheer frustration.  So read on.

Forever, and I mean forever, I waited, and waited for someone, anyone, to create a lap stand for the iPad that met the needs I wanted and knew was needed in the market.  As a consumer and a reviewer I knew what was needed in a lap stand.  No one stepped up to the plate.  I spoke to other owners and inventors, made suggestions, offered ideas, waited, and still nothing.  So about a year ago I came up with a design.  I put it to construction.  Now this is a year ago, mind you.  My factories screwed everything up over and over, and delayed what was supposed to be a February launch, to a November launch.  But it’s finally here, live, large and in my opinion, “in charge.”

The “Lap Pro: Stand/Caddy” is its name.  So here is what it does.  It is a soft, plush stand designed to be used in bed, on the couch, the chair, trains, planes & automobiles.  It was also designed to be a carrying tote for tablets and some minor accessories which can all be placed within the 2x pocket.  The Lap Pro works all of these universally:

Tablets
E-Readers
Books
Magazines
Paperbacks

It is useful for all these items and has a universal one size fits all.  The Lap Pro is constructed of styrofoam beans, teddy bear stuffing and MicroFiber cloth.  This was done with the intention of keeping it light at around 10 oz., malleable and able to use the stand’s fabric to clean off dirty screens with the fabric made of the same material as the cleaning cloths you get with your sunglasses.  The pockets are made of the exact same material, so scratches are not a concern.  When a tablet is placed within the pocket, the beans surround it, giving it ample protection on the most vulnerable and likely areas to receive abuse and damage:  the front, back, top and bottom of the tablet.  The two sides are still covered, but have no padding.

The Lap Pro is able to be angled from 0-89 degrees.  It rests naturally at around 40-45 degrees.  When one wishes to have the stand at less than 40 degrees, simply place the tablet into the “Bumper-Well” (jam it in there) and while holding the top of the iPad in place, roll the Lap Pro onto its back by also lifting the “Bumper” (lip).  Then press down and wiggle a bit and it will stay in that position.  Increasing angles is simply done by pushing the tablet down and forward, and the Lap Pro will keep that position.

This is useful when in a tight, upright seated position.  Such as when one is on a charter bus.  Now, if you wish to use it while lying flat on your back, say while you’re in bed?  Simply place the Lap Pro anywhere on your body that is comfortable, from your ankles to your chest, place the tablet, book, whatever into the Bumper-Well and then fluff up and forward to an upright angle of 89 degrees. Because of the beanbag design, the beans will settle pretty well offering good resistance, helping to prevent any flattening.  So the Lap Pro will hold its shape and angle rather well.

The Lap Pro: Stand/Caddy was designed for the comforts of both men and women.  We males tend to sit with a wide stance.  Our legs are typically spread apart at the knees.  So the Lap Pro has a natural width of around 12″.  So no more kegel exercises trying to hold something in place on your lap.  No, the Lap Pro was designed to make this a comfortable, effortless endeavor for my brother males.  Just put it in your lap or between your knees in a natural seated stance and the Lap Pro will perform for you.

For the ladies, there is a very special surprise for you.  Who on the side of the fairer sex can tell me of a stand (or anything) that allows you use with your legs crossed?  I have never come across such a mythical thing.  Should something already exist, it is a rarity and it without a doubt does not work for the iPad or any tablet or E-Reader, and it is my business to know considering I review these things for all of you.  So ladies, you can use this stand with your legs crossed.  Which leads to an obvious additional perk.  If the Lap Pro works with crossed legs, then it will obviously work with one leg.  Yes, finally a stand that works for all positions, laying back, sitting up, somewhere in between, with wide leg, crossed leg and even one leg stance and with still good stability.

The Lap Pro, due to it having no hard, sharp or moving parts, makes it great for just about any age and pretty unbreakable. It also happens to make a great travel pillow as well.  Tearing can happen, but as long as you do not get overly abusive with it, nothing will happen to it.  Simply put, it works.  A lot of effort went into making a utilitarian design to fulfill all needs regarding relaxed use.  Would I call this an “executive stand”?  Absolutely not.  Admittedly the Lap Pro is not a “slick” stand.  This was a stand designed for home, travel, and casual use, for real utilitarian needs and function.

Dimensions:  L: 8.5″ x W: 12-13″ x H: 6.5″
Weight: 10 oz.

The Lap Pro is made by hand.  Some people might like less beans, which will make the stand more malleable.  The way to do this, is as follows:

Take your tablet or hard cover book and place it in the Bumper-Well in landscape mode.
Place it on a knee high table (or floor).
Place the butts of your palms on top of the tablet, hovering over the stand.
Then throw your body weight down, stiff armed pushing the tablet down and out, jamming it into the Bumper for 60 seconds.

This will cause the Bumper to stretch out some.  After this:

If on a table, sit on it and wiggle your tush to settle in and expand the fabric and stay there for 1-5 minutes.
If no table is available, do the same thing on the floor, but instead, kneel on it.
This will expand and stretch the end-caps and chassis fabric.  Do this to make the Lap Pro as malleable as desired.

If you study in bed or the couch, lying down, play games, composing essays, watching a video, or just surfing the web?  The Lap Pro will do everything you need and do it well and competently.

The Lap Pro: Stand/Caddy, is available only in black at this time, but will soon be branded with various teams, corporate logos and patterns.  It retails at an affordable price of $29.99 (which was intentional, because all the other companies are gouging us with $40-50+ prices) and can be found at the Lap Pro Site, or also on Amazon.com.

5 Simple methods to help preserve your iPhone 4S battery life

The iPhone 4S is already generating praise for its relatively well performing battery but everyone who has got their hands on the iPhone 4S already knows that more is never good enough. Even as manufactures introduce better performing batteries, technicians are already developing the next generation of battery intensive applications. Hence, to make the best of the battery you have, you need to make some small efficiency focused changes to the iPhone setup. This does not mean that we ought to choose one extreme and shut down all external applications found on the iPhone, but rather make small changes to get the best user experience without having to charge the phone every few minutes.

1. Turn-off unnecessary connections: Whenever possible, disable unnecessary connections such as Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi. If you are at work and you have your own PC, then you would not exactly need these connections because you will be able to access these features via PC. The best times to use these connections are when you are on the move or you do not have access to a PC (and internet).

2. Adjust Brightness: when you are at home or at the office, turn down the screen brightness. This needlessly drains your battery. Activate the brightness when you are heading outside but remember to turn it off when you are inside.

3. Disable 3G: Unless you need fast connection speeds, turn off the 3G because this takes a significant toll on the iPhone’s battery.

4. Notification settings: Adjust your synchronisation and notification settings because the constant updates can quickly wear down even the toughest battery. The best thing to do would be to manually refresh unessential apps.

 5. Careful of the multi-tasking: Sometimes you might use your iPhone for music, movies, social networking and general communication. If you have any important work, then tone down on the multi-tasking and focus on one simple set of applications.

iPhone 4S: Bluetooth 4.0 goes unnoticed

Most reviews featuring the iPhone 4S have focused on a narrow range of issues: Siri, enhanced hardware and iOS 5. However, the fact is that the iPhone comes loaded with yet another impressive feature underneath its perfectly toned body: Bluetooth 4.0. The reason for this glaring omission is obvious; in the expectations to see an iPhone 5 with a radically designed body and super enhanced hardware, people forgot to even consider the other amazing features that Apple has devoted to the iPhone 4S. As time passed by, we have seen how people are now embracing Siri and really appreciating the iPhone 4S for what it is at the end of the day: the best smart phone on the market right now.

The main advantage with Bluetooth 4.0 is that it consumes far less power than traditional Bluetooth devices. With this feature, the iPhone 4S has gained the ability to communicate with a variety of low-power devices including special thermometers and scales. As a result, the iPhone 4S (and other products featuring Bluetooth 4.0) promise to become a much larger part of our lives in the months and years to come. As of now, only the Motorola Droid Razr from the Android range of smart phones comes loaded with this amazing piece of technology. The technology itself was only released last year and now that the iPhone 4S has adopted Bluetooth 4.0, rivals are bound to follow.

As of now, there are two types of Bluetooth enabled devices now: the low-powered devices and the normal power devices, such as the standard mobile phones and computers. The low-powered Bluetooth devices, which also feature single-mode low-power radio, are classified as Bluetooth smart devices. Meanwhile, the Bluetooth 4.0 devices, which feature two radios – one low-powered radio and a normal one- are classified as Bluetooth Smart Ready devices.

Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2 To Developers

Just yesterday, Apple pushed out iOS 5.0.1 to developers in an effort to combat the battery issue plaguing some owners. Just one day later, they have released beta 2 of iOS 5.0.1. If you are a developer, then you’ll want to hit up developer.apple.com or simply rock the OTA update.

U.S. Cellular says no to iPhone 4S, quarterly sales estimates say YES!

iPhone 4S: Everything you need to know

According to a report by Fierce Wireless, U.S. Cellular apparently turned down the opportunity to carry Apple’s new iPhone 4S:

U.S. Cellular turned down Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone because it did not make sense for the company economically, CEO Mary Dillon said on the company’s third-quarter earnings conference call. Dillon said that the carrier had the opportunity to sell the iPhone but that Apple’s “terms were unacceptable from a risk and profitability standpoint.”

Dillon mentioned that U.S. Cellular may be open to carrying the iPhone a little further down the road. It’s possible that these “unacceptable terms” could have been similar to the Sprint deal that required a hefty four year investment to get into the iPhone game.

Meanwhile, the three big U.S. carriers that do have the iPhone 4S are booming following huge initial sales.

Canaccord Genuity’s Mike Walkley this morning raised his already fairly high estimate for this quarter’s sales by Apple (AAPL) of its iPhone from 27 million units to 29 million units, after his “checks” last month suggested the iPhone 4S was the top seller at AT&T (T), Sprint-Nextel (S), and Verizon Communications (VZ).

C-Spire Wireless, a much smaller regional carrier with around 875,000 subscribers, was able to pick up the iPhone 4S just fine by working within Apple’s terms.

So what gives, U.S. Wireless?

Apple uses massive cash reserve to tie up supply chain… and lasers

Apple uses massive cash reserve to tie up supply chain... and lasers

Adam Satariano and Peter Burrows of Businessweek describe how Apple chooses to invest its huge stockpile of cash in securing everything from transportation to components, often early enough and in such vast quantities that less forward-thinking rivals are left frozen out.

Apple began innovating on the nitty-gritty details of supply-chain management almost immediately upon Steve Jobs’s return in 1997. At the time, most computer manufacturers transported products by sea, a far cheaper option than air freight. To ensure that the company’s new, translucent blue iMacs would be widely available at Christmas the following year, Jobs paid $50 million to buy up all the available holiday air freight space, says John Martin, a logistics executive who worked with Jobs to arrange the flights. The move handicapped rivals such as Compaq that later wanted to book air transport. Similarly, when iPod sales took off in 2001, Apple realized it could pack so many of the diminutive music players on planes that it became economical to ship them directly from Chinese factories to consumers’ doors. When an HP staffer bought one and received it a few days later, tracking its progress around the world through Apple’s website, “It was an ‘Oh s—’ moment,” recalls Fawkes.

Ive and his design team sound like they pretty much move into the factories for a while to make sure the production is done right. Apple already spends a fortune on this, and plans to double their spending going forward.

For more on the process, and the elaborate agreements and shipping and monitoring tactics Apple uses — and yes, the lasers — hit the link below.

Apple’s VP of Global Security no longer with Apple after the lost iPhone 4S investigation

John T Leaves Apple

VP of Global Security, John Theriault’s career with Apple has come to an end. No one’s talking, but with yet another iPhone going missing in a bar, and the strange police-did/didn’t-assiste investigation into the investigation that took place, the timing doesn’t come as a huge surprise .

However, we have seen quite a few Apple executives leave in the recent months, so there is a chance that it is just a sign of an adjustment in the top ranks around new CEO Tim Cook.

Play the classic Memory game with Instagram photos with Instamory for iPad

Instamory is a new iPad game that is similar to the classic Memory game, only with Instamory, you’re matching Instagram photos. If you don’t have an Instagram account, nor do you want one, you can still play Instamory with the millions of public photos stored on Instagram. You can also selectively choose exactly which photos you wish to use.

I’m a pretty big fan of memory games and a big fan of Instagram. This is the best of both worlds.

Instamory is a beautifully designed iPad version of the classic concentration game in which you memorize and collect matching Instagram photos.

Instamory is available on the iPad and on sale for $0.99.

Analyst: Apple Using Free iPhone 3GS To Fight Android Army

With the release of the iPhone 4S, the price of the iPhone 4 was subsequently dropped to $99. The bigger price move might have been the iPhone 3GS, which can now be had for free, with the standard 2-year agreement. Analyst Shaw Wu believes the iPhone 3GS will account for almost 20% of iPhone sales this quarter.

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/apple_iphone_3g_s_8gb_black_l.gif" class="lightbox" >class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25016" title="apple_iphone_3g_s_8gb_black_l" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/apple_iphone_3g_s_8gb_black_l.gif" alt="" width="228" height="374" />

The move helps Apple compete against the army of Android phones that are being released. While the iPhone 3GS does not have Siri or other features of the iPhone 4S, it’s still an extremely capable phone. Plus, it runs iOS 5, the latest iteration of Apple’s iPhone software. Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich software will only be available on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Even Google’s own flagship Nexus One will not be able to run ICS. There is value in picking up a free iPhone 3GS. Not everyone needs an A5 processor, but having iOS 5 makes the iPhone 3GS up to date. A comparable Android phone would be the Samsung Captivate, but even that is running Android 2.2, with the promise of Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

For Apple’s part, they have cost savings from using older, less expensive parts. The only trouble for AT&T and Apple seems to be keeping the iPhone 3GS in stock. Not unlike the iPhone 4S, stock of the iPhone 3GS were sold out immediately following the price change. A quick check of AT&T does show they are back in stock, but for how long?

Caching bug in iOS 5 Safari

On some websites, like CNN shown in the video above, when I hit “back” to return to the previous page, instead of getting the previous page I get a version of the previous page that’s from some time in the past, as much as a day or so. I’ve also had this happen on sites like Reddit. Unless Apple included highly advanced tachyon-based time travel functionality in iOS 5, there’s some problem between the web server, the cache, mobile Safari, and my eyes that’s conspiring to give me pages from the past.

You get an older version of the web page you just left.

That gets Safari to render the page again. You can also clear the cache. That seems to alleviate the problem, at least for a while.

I haven’t tried this in iOS 5.0.1 yet and it may well be fixed in that build, otherwise here’s hoping Apple fixes it soon.

SPY mouse update brings leaderboards and new challenges

Firemint’s popular game, SPY mouse, has been updated with global leaderboards and 5 new challenges. Additionally, you only need 1 Squeak friend to get started on challenges and Kiska can now be used once per hour (up from once per day).

For operatives brave enough to pit their wits against the world’s best, this update delivers global leaderboards! All you need to do is sign up to Origin, and a world of competition with the best cheese procurers in the business is all yours.

Here’s the extended update notes.

SPY mouse is available on the iPhone for $0.99.

CBS turned down the chance of an Apple TV deal

Speaking on his company’s earnings call, CBS CEO Les Moonves said that CBS had turned down the Apple TV as a platform for its content. The revelation was revealed in response to a question about CBS’s appetite toward striking deals with new streaming providers that may not have the cash to pay up front for its content. Moonves claimed that CBS had turned down Apple and its Apple TV platform because the offer was based on an ad split revenue source.

This seems to confirm rumors that Apple is trying to secure some sort of Apple TV subscription service however it looks like it is going to be much harder than Apple had hoped. Apple has been slowly adding additional media content to the Apple TV platform; the recent iOS 5 update brought Wall Street Journal Live and NHL content. Hulu Plus is also rumored to be ready to go on the Apple TV but political reasons are cited as holding it back from launch.

Apple adds new don’t-purge, don’t-back-up file store in iOS 5

Apple ads new don't-purge, don't-back-up file store in iOS 5

Apple has announced that, as part of iOS 5.0.1 beta 1, they’ve added something that should eliminate the problems iOS 5.0 had with purging data — everything from Instapaper pages to flight charts.

It introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations.

Previously, developers who wanted to keep data cached on the iPhone or iPad but not have it backed up to iTunes — because it would create a long delay for their users — put them into temporary storage. With iCloud and iOS 5, however, Apple became much more aggressive about purging data from that temporary storage, leading to users starting apps only to find them empty and their stuff gone. This was especially vexing when on an airplane or otherwise off the data network and the content couldn’t just be re-downloaded.

While Apple doesn’t always seem to realize the ramifications of their changes, in this case at least they’re addressing it quickly. Hopefully this gives the best of both worlds — persistent, non-critical storage that’s there when you want it but doesn’t slow down or eat up storage for your backups.
