The following is the letter submitted by Steve Jobs to Apple’s Board of Directors:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know.
Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Apple has just announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO, and will now take over as Chairman of the Board. Tim Cook, formerly COO, will replace Jobs as CEO and also join the board as a director.
“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.”
“The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO,” added Levinson. “Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does.”
UPDATE: The Wall Street Journal‘s Yukari Iwatani Kane, who’s sources are uncannily accurate, added that Jobs will remain involved going forward. [WSJ]
People familiar with the situation have said that Mr. Jobs continues to be active at Apple and is closely involved in the company’s product strategy.

According to T-Mobile, they already carry over one million iPhones on their EDGE network. If Sprint is really href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/is-the-iphone-4-and-5-coming-to-sprint-in-october">joining AT&T and Verizon as an iPhone carrier in October, Apple should let T-Mobile customers experience something better than 2G speeds.
MacTrast talked to a T-Mobile employee who claims Apple does plan to let T-Mobile users out of their 2G jail cells, by offering an iPhone 5 that would operate at 3G speeds on the T-Mobile network.
Yesterday’s Sprint rumor said that the carrier would also be offering the iPhone 4 on their network. The MacTrast tipster made no mention of an iPhone 4 for T-Mobile.

As of now, whenever a person decides to buy an iPhone, he or she will have to manually compare the prices and features of the competing service providers. However, this process is expensive and time consuming. Moreover, given the complexity of all the packages available on the market right now, it is very difficult to make a proper informed choice, unless you have an intimate knowledge of the products available. Hence, most people stick to their existing service providers or just opt for the one with the coolest ads. More dedicated users will try browsing the internet to find an honest review or guide to choosing the best possible service provider. Fortunately, Apple seems to be serious about making the lives of consumers easier in the future by allowing them to compare and contrast difference service plans right from their iPhone.
This week AppleInsider came across a new patent publication that was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, which was entitled “Method and Apparatus for Using a Wireless Communication Device with Multiple Service Providers.” This would maintain a particular set of service configuration profiles on the iPhone. The app would allow users to find the best service plan based on their needs.
Interestingly, Apple was exploring the concept early on but backed away after strong protests by service providers who claim that such a service would reduce their ability to effectively market their service plans.
Pessimists argue that such a service, even if it become viable will not be rolled out any time soon. However, recent reports suggest that Apple is more concerned in capturing more markets than appeasing different service providers. In addition, different service providers have to shift different versions of the iPhone and this increases the overall manufacturing cost. Hence, Apple’s keenness to promote a standard version of the iPhone that will be compatible across different carriers.
Perhaps Apple’s top management has realized that the iPhone has gained a good enough reputation to be released to multiple service providers. The exclusivity of the iPhone served its brand image well early on when it was still trying to prove itself, but now with the rise of Android, Apple needs to start changing its strategy. If this service is rolled out as planned, the iPhone may be exposed to millions of additional users while reducing the overall production cost. For Apple, this maybe the magic formula it needs to stay on top.

McAfee has long been a giant in the PC security industry. It has a fine line of security software programs for both on-line and off-line use. Now the company plans on entering the smart phone market. Smartphones are becoming more powerful and sophisticated with each passing year. Moreover, while the popularity of smartphones is souring, PC sales have begun to slow-down in an unprecedented manner. The transformation brings its own set of positive and negative consequences. On the positive side, smartphones are spreading the benefits of computing power to a variety of different users. On the negative side, as smartphones begin to resemble miniature computers, they are becoming exposed to a wider array of security threats.
This is exactly the problem that McAfee is focusing on and to this effect it has released it recently launched its fully-fledged data protection app: WaveSecure. The app allows users to back-up their contacts, photos, videos and other information. In addition, it also allows users to remotely track their iPhone via an online McAfee WaveSecure portal. The app also works across different platforms so you can restore your data on to different platform such as Android.
In addition to the standard back up and tracking features, WaveSecure comes with a variety of other features including built-in configuration settings and remote data removal. However, the app does lack some of the features that are available on the Android variant including SMS and call log backup, remote locking and SIM tracking.
The app is currently available on the Apple App Store for $19.99 but is only compatible with iPhones that run iOS 4.0 or later. While the app may seem expensive, most decent security apps cost around the same or even more. Thus, considering the expanding range of security threats that are currently faced by iPhone users, this may indeed be a worthwhile investment.

Part of Nikon’s line of point-and-shoot cameras with built in picoprojectors, this comes with a special connector to hook up to your iOS device’s dock port, and can project an up to 60″ image on a flat surface.
It’s not a cheap gadget, the S1200pj will set you back $430, has 12-megapixel sensor, and a 5x zoom lens — marking it as a competent point-and-shoot compact.
The great thing here is that there’s a pretty good chance you carry both your iPhone and camera to a hell of a lot of places. You could bring this as a backup to give a powerpoint presentation, to show people your pictures from a trip, or have an emergency YouTube showing if you’re really bored.

Apple has announced a few new features for iTunes Connect, their back-end iPhone and iPad app management portal, in an effort to provide better management and reporting for developers.
New Metadata Rejected App Review Status: You can now resolve metadata issues that have been identified by the App Review team without having to recompile and resubmit a new binary for review.
App Bundle IDs Now Editable Before Binary Submission: You can now edit your app’s assigned Bundle ID in iTunes Connect as long as you have not submitted a new binary for review and your app is not using Game Center or the iAd Network.
Also added is a new auto-ingest tool for easier, automated retrieval of daily and weekly reports.
The auto-ingest tool is a Java-based script that will run on any operating system that supports Java 1.6 or later. Before you begin using the tool, we strongly urge you to read the App Store Sales and Trends Guide and note the following:
More information is available inside Apple’s iOS developer portal.

IconCommands lets jailbroken iOS users customize what happens when they tap on icons. Want to set up gestures for additional taps? Don’t like holding down to delete apps and want a quicker solution? Once downloaded, with IconCommands you can head over to your settings and set up all that and more.
For example, you can set two taps to display application info and three taps to delete the app. There are also several other options including restart springboard, search Google, switch to Safe Mode, hide, and many more. I found this to be a super fast way to search the web, respring, delete, and hide icons. Much easier than jumping into SBSettings to hide icons. It’s also much easier than jumping into Safari to search the web. I simply tap any icon four times and it brings up a prompt to search the web.
You can find IconCommands in Cydia for $1.99.

In May of this year, we heard that Mac gaming legends and Halo makers Bungie href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/is-bungie-headed-to-ios/2011/05/13/">had an interest in iOS, an interest that has born fruit with href="http://www.bungie.net/projects/aerospace/crimson/content.aspx?link=crimson_about">Crimson: Steam Pirates. Just to be clear Bungie is publishing this title under their Bungie: Aerospace imprint, the actual developers are a group called Harebrained Schemes.
Crimson is a free-to-play, turn-based steampunk pirate game that will be release on the first of September. It’ll come with 8 missions, and then further mission packs available for $1.99 a download. At this stage, multiplayer is limited to pass-and-play, but I hope networked asynchronous functionality will be added in the future.

They say that the number of viruses, trojans and other bits of unpleasantness increased dramatically last Spring, up 76% to 44 known instances. Java had 14, Symbian and Blackberry 4 a piece, and WebOS and iOS had none. Zip. Nada.
McAfee states there are no known malware attacks on out of the box iOS, and the ones that do target it rely on you having a jailbroken app.
What this all boils down to is what you value more: security, or access to any and all apps. Because apparently, without a curated app store, you can’t keep out the scammers.

A Dutch court today issued a European Union-wide injunction against the sale of Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, and Galaxy Ace phones, due to violation of an Apple patent involving swiping between photos in a gallery. The injunction would start taking effect in mid-October (around the time of iPhone 5 release).
However, it sounds like the impact might be mitigated somewhat by Apple’s failure to file all the proper paperwork for their patents in all the proper countries. Also, the court disregarded most of Apple’s other patent claims, focusing their ruling on this one, single area of infringement.
According to FOSS Patents:
Samsung may be able to work around that particular patent without a huge degradation of the usability of its devices because it appears to relate to the way users flip through the pictures in a photo gallery. However, regardless of how Samsung may be able to work around this decision in Europe, it’s a setback for Android, a platform that is at issue in more than 50 lawsuits worldwide. In all likelihood, the winning patent is infringed by Android itself — not the operating system per se, but by one or more of the applications that ship with Android and without which the usefulness of Android would be impaired in one particular area (photo viewing). Apple has now obtained the first enforceable court decision (out of many lawsuits going on around the world) that finds Android to infringe an Apple patent — and there will definitely be many more to come.
In other words, the Imperial Fleet might have come out of hyperspace too close to this system, but all sides better prepare for ground assault.
Anti-virus maker McAfee has released a report saying that iOS devices, including iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch were pretty much unaffected by the growing mobile malware attacks facing platforms like Google’s Android. Jailbroken iOS devices were slightly more vulnerable, having had to deal with 4 variants of the same attack, but still far less than the 44 affecting Android (a 76% increase.)
The difference seems largely explained by how Apple runs their platform — as a closed, closely inspected garden that makes it far more difficult for malicious apps to make it into the App Store and through to consumers. Google, meanwhile, has a far more open ecosystem that allows far more types of apps in the Market, including some that ought not be allowed.
In other words, if you live in the Apple bubble, it might be a bit stuffy but you won’t get rained on. Depending on how much you value mobile security, that might be a tradeoff you’re willing to make.
Note: Anti-virus companies no doubt would love to get more heavily into the mobile market, so read any reports they put out in that context.

Acer has reported their first ever quarterly loss and Chairman J.T. Wang is placing the blame squarely on “tablets” (i.e. iPad), a “fever” he does not think will last. Having seen their fortunes rise with the netbook market most hurt by Apple’s iPad, Wang concedes it would be impossible for Acer to break even this year, but thinks iPad will face and netbooks will regain consumer interest moving forward.
Right.
It’s interesting corporations like HP last week and Acer now blaming their misfortunes on the “tablet” effect/market when they themselves make tablets — the TouchPad and Iconia respectively — just not popular tablets yet. Of course they’re not going to name a competing product like iPad, but neither should they blame a mythical “tablet” space — just their inability to thus far compete in it.
Acer has previously called iPad — and iPhone — a “mutant virus” and said iPad market share would drop to 20%.
Unfortunately for Acer, they’ve yet to find a cure for this mutant virus fever, and worse, it doesn’t seem like they’re looking. (Here’s a hint: look for the sings that point to make great products with fantastic experiences that delight consumers and figure out how to price them competitively.)

The events of September 11 left an indelible mark on the American — and world — psyche. With the event’s 10 year anniversary just weeks away, be prepared to see a wave of cash-in apps appearing, all designed to take advantage of tragedy to turn a profit.
The href="http://www.observer.com/2011/08/911-memorial-app-to-be-ipad-exclusive/">New York Observer has an article about an app called “9/11 Memorial: Past, Present and Future” made by Steve Rosenbaum. It’ll have 400 photographs and hours of video. And it’s coming to the iPad for $9.95 (though it’ll be free from Sept 1-12). And it’s an iPad exclusive.
I’m not casting doubt on Rosenbaum’s motives here, but be aware: there will be an influx of 9/11 memorial apps, and you can bet that most of them will lead to someone making money off of the grief of a nation.

Despite the simplicity provided by smart user interface design, most functions are not apparent to the majority of users. Shouldn’t these people have a practical way to learn about what they have been missing out on?
The easiest way for people to learn an interface is visually and there is simply not a better method that works for teaching a variety of subjects than to display everything step-by-step. An interactive tutorial would fit those criteria.
When a user boots into iOS for the first time, there could be a tutorial prompt that walks users through its capabilities and features by demonstrating on-screen as well as having them repeat. The introduction tutorial could just show users the basics, then there could be more accessible in the Settings menus. Better yet, a homescreen Tutorial app for easier access could be exceedingly useful for some.
Sure, Apple offers workshops in their retail stores and there are books on the subject, but the reach and popularity of such methods is extremely small. People simply do not want to commit time to travel to a store or read through a book. There is also a knowledgebase, but it is arguably comparable to a book and less people would attempt to read through it. Thus these benefit very few. To the contrary, putting effective tutorials on phones and tablets would be zero commitment as well as instantly beneficial.
If Apple wants a larger amount of its customer-base to be able to actually take advantage of the hundreds of thousands of features that Apple and app developers have created, then they would finally offer a tutorial that is offered similarly to the system I have outlined. While there is not enough time for this to show up in iOS 5 unless only a small amount of information is covered, it seems like a good fit for iOS 6. Though tutorials can be seen as contradicting to simplicity, a potential reason for Apple to second-guess such a feature, they are also a way to highlight and explain simplicity.
For every person that skips past the tutorial, there will be some that take notice so they can sharpen their knowledge of the devices they use daily. Since so many people know so little about a centric, complementary part of their lives, they should have a simple option to quickly master iOS.
Ten One has just launched its latest stylus for iOS devices and it looks to be a very nice addition to its range. The new stylus which is called the Pogo Sketch Pro is machined from a single piece of aluminum wrapped with a rubber grip for easy hand writing. The tip is replaceable so if it gets damaged, you don’t need to buy a new stylus either.
You have your own writing style, and we’ve catered to it. Pogo Sketch Pro is the most sensitive stylus on the market, and it’s 100% effective at every angle. Pogo Sketch Pro employs a new patent pending tip technology involving patterned structures within the tip itself. This advancement allows incredible sensitivity while maintaining a small tip diameter.
