Daily Tip: How to link directly to an App Store app update page

Daily Tip: How to link directly to an App Store app update page

If you’re a developer wondering how to link users directly to the App Store update page for your app, you’re in luck, Gabe has posted the URL format up on Stack Overflow.

Turns out the phobos links do still work and you can link directly to the update page using this URL format:

itms-apps://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftwareUpdate?id=[APPID]&mt=8

Of course replacing the [APPID] with your own app id, not including the brackets. This will link directly to the latest update for the app, instead of the main app page.

It should work on-device for an app with a waiting update. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes and if you have any other developer tips for us, send them in!

[Stack Overflow via @tapbot_paul]

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Hands on: Google’s new Pool Party photo sharing app for iPhone

Hands on: Google's new Pool Party photo sharing app for iPhone

Pool Party is a photo sharing from the brains behind the recently-aquired Slide. Like Google+, it’s an invite-only beta right now, and like Google+, and Picasa, it allows you to quickly and easily share pictures with people you know who are also members. Why Google feels they need to be positively Microsoft-ian about the sheer number of overlapping image sharing services they offer right now, I don’t know, but here’s how they bill this one:

Instant photo fun

Pool Party is a simple, free photo sharing app. Create group albums and see your friends’ photos as they happen in real-time.

Pool Party is invite-only at the moment, so you’ll be asked to enter your email address after installing the app. If you haven’t already been invited to Pool Party by a friend, you can visit our website at poolpartyapp.com to request an invitation.

I’ve been testing Pool Party for iPhone with Phil Nickinson from Android Central, who’s putting the Android version through its paces and… it’s got a lot of promise. The UI is dark, with big, bold white text. (Though they insist on color-coding your friends’ names, which is ends up feeling very Christmas tree.) They also stick to tried and true UI metaphors (even, smartly, borrowing the now almost standard “pull to refresh” pioneered by Loren Brichter in Tweetie/Twitter for iPhone).

Organization is done in Pools, and one you add a a Pool you can add people to it. For those who thrive on such things, push notifications are included to keep you up to date on every little interaction imaginable (I turned them off, like I turned off Google+’s email notifications). There are also a couple prominent places to provide feedback, so it’s clear the developers and designers want to make this a good experience.

This being Google, there’s also a web interface for when you’re away from your iPhone (or Android device).

Whether or not this ultimately takes any users away from established image sharing services like Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, or Google own services, new and old, like Picasa and Google+ remains to be seen. It’s great to see Google trying things and fantastic to see them working on improving their user experience. Ultimately, however, it will be nice to see them coalesce into a single, coherent, consistent service.

The Last Ace of Space App Review – A Quirky Tale of Gassy Pigs and More

Anyone who doesn’t appreciate getting a bit of humor out of applications, once in awhile, is pretty crazy. With its bizarre premise, colorful cartoon graphics and infinite replay value, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-last-ace-of-space/id429228289?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">The Last Ace of Space makes sure people like me, who do like something totally weird and funny, get our share of kicks.

Astro Cow’s first venture on the app store features characters completely irrelevant to each other: a gassy rocket-pig, a puking alien, extremely obese alien and more. The story is that all of the aliens on a foreign planet for Ace and his friend, the pig, want the partners dead. You’ll need to [attempt to] run [forever], avoiding the spontaneously appearing enemies, which will include having to do a series of furious tapping, jumping, shooting, flicking, sliding and more!

If you haven’t already figured out, the game is another twist on the endless runner genre: you run as far as you can, until you die, basically making the game endless. But what does put it apart from the masses of games that share the same genre, is that you’re not only jumping over obstacles. Instead, you’ve got to jump, shoot flying enemies, flick other flying enemies, slide under fat enemies, and tap harder to run faster to avoid being eaten. href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-20029">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.unoaohov.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" title="LastAce" width="480" height="320" class="alignright size-full wp-image-20029" /> It’s truly a unique experience, considering you’ll be in charge of doing all of those repeatedly. And the game developers have created a control scheme that makes it easy to do all of the above without clutter. If you mess up three times, the game ends.

At the moment, since it’s endless, the game has an infinite replay value, although more could be added to make the gameplay much better. Multiple game modes could be added, because right now, save for the fact that the characters are brilliant, the lack of variety could get a bit boring after awhile. Also, powerups or some sort of in-game store could be implemented, with time, to have incentive for the player and keep things fresh. Other than the occasional ride on the gassy pig, this aspect of the game is lacking. Just my two cents.

With such awesome characters, it would truly be a letdown if the artwork didn’t share that awesomeness. Thankfully, the two man team that made that game, evidently, aren’t the type of people to release an incomplete game: the artwork has a kind of cartoon theme with the thick, heavy borders that I’m a sucker for. Plus, the background soundtrack goes well with the premise – it seems to come straight out of a James Bone chase scene!

It’s currently on sale for $0.99, so grab it now while you can, and attempt to save Ace and his buddy, the flatulent pig, from the aliens! There’s also a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-last-ace-of-space-lite/id435972703?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">lite version available for those of you hesitant to purchase.

Boxwave Mini Capacitive Stylus Review

Tiny little accessories have always peaked my interest, mainly because of their portability and simply small size. Boxwave’s onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.boxwave.com/apple-ipod-touch-4g-4th-generation-stylus/mini-capacitive-apple-ipod-touch-4g-4th-generation-stylus/bwpdd/ttz-zkfz');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">Mini Capacitive Stylus definitely fits into that category and easily peaked my interest when I first saw it. Though it’s a great little product, I’m not quite sure how often people may use it.

The Mini Capacitive Stylus is sold for, supposedly, easier use with capacitive touch screens. This includes the iPhone’s, iPod Touch’s and onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ip4help.com">iPad’s screens, to name a few. Advertised to make it easier to your device when your hands aren’t suitable, primarily when you’re wearing gloves, the soft material on the stylus can be used for mostly everything that you usually use your device for. Although that’s what it’s supposed to do, don’t expect it to replace your seasoned typing or be able to be your controller in the app store’s various applications. Instead, it will work best with single-touch functions and drawing applications (works flawlessly with Gamevil’s Chalk n’ Talk).

There are a ton of different styluses available for the capacitive touch screens, though Boxwave’s take/> on the accessory stands out. Why? They’ve made it so that it’s easily portable, thanks to its wonderfully small size. href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-20009">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_1794.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_1794" width="640" height="480" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20009" />The mini capacitive stylus is about an 1.25 inches in length making it easily portable and able to fit in pockets of any size. Also, as an added bonus, there’s a plug connected to the stylus itself by an attachment string that inserts into a 3.5 mm headphone jack. In this way, you can always keep the stylus with your device.

href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-20008">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_1792-300x225.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_1792" width="300" height="225" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-20008" />You really have to admire the polish look that the mini stylus maintains. It’s got a very modern look, with a metallic finish from the tip to the end; to put it simply, it looks great.

Despite its small size, which is the prominent advantage over other styli, the stylus does feel “natural” while you’re using. I don’t have the largest of fingers, but certainly also not the smallest, and the stylus felt almost exactly like holding a mini pencil – there’s really nothing wrong with the product, other than there aren’t really too many uses for it, especially around this time of year. But if you do want a little accessory that certainly can come in use, sometime around the corner, then you can onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.boxwave.com/apple-ipod-touch-4g-4th-generation-stylus/mini-capacitive-apple-ipod-touch-4g-4th-generation-stylus/bwpdd/ttz-zkfz');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">check it out over at Boxwave’s website. It’s available for a special sale price of $12.95 and is available in four colors: red, black, silver and blue.

Make Your iPhone “Play Dead” to Keep the Battery Alive Longer

“You have an iPhone?! Can I see it? Does it have Doodle Jump/Angry Birds?” Even after all of these years, people can still act like another person’s iPhone is the coolest thing ever and that they have not seen a computer in ten years. If somebody wants to check Facebook and the room is full of Android and BlackBerry devices, four out of five times the iPhone owner will be nagged. (Unscientific statistic.) Well, for the entirely reasonable price of free, an app titled Play Dead will solve your “everybody wants to borrow my iPhone” woes.

Cleverly, the app simply displays the “power off” indicator. Just show that to somebody next time they want to see your iPhone and you’ll fool just about anyone.

No more zombies draining your iPhone’s battery so that the battery really is dead and unusable by the time it gets back to you. So, call Play Dead an app that can prevent a bad denouement for yourself, the actual owner. Ironic how a dead battery is prevented by pretending that it is drained.

The only setback is that you cannot use your iPhone in front of a person that you’ve fooled afterwards, if only because it will lead to trust issues and awkward conversations. Come to think of it, maybe the word “no” has less strings attached. Either way, both options are free.

Starbucks Combines Two Apps Into One

Starbucks has cottoned on to the idea that having two apps for their customers is perhaps a little silly, and has combined them into just a single version. Gone are myStarbucks, and Starbucks Card Mobile, and in their place is just…well…Starbucks. The newly redesigned app takes the Starbucks card recording from the latter and slaps it on top of finding your local branch of the former. From this single app you can now manage your reward points, pay for your purchases, send gift cards to friends, find stores, and even look for jobs.

That’s pretty sweet.

Here’s the full feature list:

• My Cards: Pay with your iPhone/iPod Touch at 6,800 U.S. company–operated Starbucks and 2,000 Target and Safeway locations. Check your Starbucks Card balance, reload your card, view your transaction history and transfer balances between cards.
• My Rewards: Track your Stars in the My Starbucks Rewards program.
• eGift: Send an eGift to a friend via email or Facebook wall post.
• Store Locator: Find the closest stores, directions, store hours and amenities.
• Drink Builder: Create and share your perfect Starbucks beverages.
• Food Menu: Browse our delicious food menu and see detailed nutritional info and ingredients. Use calorie and allergen filters to help find foods that meet your health and wellness needs.
•Coffee Menu: Explore every Starbucks whole bean coffee. Find your perfect cup by taste, or search for organic, Fair Trade, aged and decaf coffees.
• Jobs: Find job opportunities with one of FORTUNE’S 100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR. Great jobs with competitive pay and perks are available in stores, roasting plants and in supporting roles all across the United States.

Check Out These Huge July 4th App Sales

With the 4th of July hitting early next week, app sellers are dropping prices left right and center. Never one to look past a holiday, EA is offering their largest ever game sale, knocking almost 50 games down to $0.99+. It’s a huge list of games, and frankly I don’t have the will required to type them out. There are a lot of apps on sale from EA, go check them out.

Adult Swim has dropped 10 apps down to just a buck, including Robot Unicorn Attack.

Gameloft has dropped 12 titles down to $0.99, six each for iPhone and iPad, including major titles like NOVA 2, Dungeon Hunter 2, and Asphalt 6.

There are plenty other out there too, I’d recommend keeping an eye on AppShopper’s price drop section for further deals.

DigiTimes: iPad 3 and iPhone 5 In September

This rumor comes via the way of DigiTimes, so it requires great big pieces of salt, as they’re often wrong. Really often wrong. Anyway, according to their supply chain sources, material preparation has begun for the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, both set to launch in October:

Taiwan-based companies included in the supply chain for iPhone 5 and iPad 3 have begun to prepare materials for the production of the two devices, which are likely to make their debuts in September and to hit the market in October, according to industry sources.

We’ve seen rumors about another iPad this year before, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I’m pretty sure that it wouldn’t be a full-out replacement for the iPad 2, because the 2 is barely into its product cycle. Rather, I have a feeling that if Apple was to produce another iPad this year it’d be to differentiate the product line like they did with the iPod — probably producing either a very cheap version, or a much more high-end one.

DC Comics to release on iPad same time as print

DC Comics to release on iPad same time as print

As part of DC Comics new 52 initiative, Dan DiDio, Jim Lee, Grant Morrison and company announced that they would be releasing future issues on iPad day and date with the traditional print releases. That’s great news for comic book readers, and great first step. Now how about offering collected digital editions simultaneous to trade paperback releases. I’d love Absolute digital editions of Watchman, Dark Knight Returns, Planetary, All Star Superman, and the list goes on.

And hopefully Marvel is paying super attention to this as well.

Found Footage: iPad vs Fireworks

It’s the Fourth of July, explosions are expected. The folks behind SlickWraps have put together this little video showing just how sturdy their iPad skin is, using the most patriotic of explosive devices: the firecracker. It’s pretty freaking impressive, but I always wince at videos that show the possible destruction of gadgets I love.

New York Times issues update to enable in-app subscription models for iPhone and iPad

The New York Times iPhone and iPad app has just received an update that allows users to subscribe via in-app purchase. Changes were made to many in-app subscription services after Apple changed the guidelines. The New York Times is one of many news publications that were affected by the changes. The update will now allow users to choose from three new in-app purchase schemes –

These fees will be on a monthly basis and will recur as long as you’re subscribed. This is similar to how other online publications have recently dealt with many of Apple’s subscription policy changes. Anyone planning on buying into the new subscription model NYT is offering?

Apple seeds OS X 10.7 Lion GM. Desktop down, mobile to go!

Apple seeds OS X 10.7 Lion GM. Desktop down, mobile to go!

Apple has just seeded the Gold Master (GM) candidate for OS X 10.7 Lion to developers. That’s the desktop jab, scheduled to land this month, that Apple is using to set up the overhand right of iOS 5, which will finish the combo this fall.

What’s interesting here is that Apple seems to be distributing it via direct download from their developer portal. To date they’ve alternated between Mac App Store redeem codes and Software Update downloads. So this is the third form of distribution during the same beta cycle.

By contrast, Apple has stuck with the tried, true, traditional direct download method for iOS 5 beta 1 and beta 2, though with the new over the air (OTA) features built into iOS, it’s possible they could try and test that system sometime in the next couple of months.

Lion, like iOS 5, will tie into the also-in-beta iCloud system so developers testing iCloud APIs for iOS will probably want to see how they work in Lion as well.

We probably won’t see iOS 5 GM until September, but once and while, new iOS-centric features sneak into the OS X updates as well, so keep your eyes open.

TheHiShop Bunker Ring Review

As far as quirky accessories go, the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thehishop.com/iphone4/ths-bunker-ring-black.html');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">Bunker Ring, by TheHiShop, does earn its place among the top. Though it’s an odd idea, it’s very well justified and just as well executed, creating a fine safety measure when using your iPhone, iPod Touch and even onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">iPad.

The Bunker Ring is a multi-purpose iPhone, iPod Touch and onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ip4help.com">iPad accessory available for $14.95. Its first, primary purpose is to keep you from dropping your device while vigorously gaming or simply carrying your device around in your hands. The second is to aid in standing your device up hands-free./> href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-19985">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_1790.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_1790" width="640" height="480" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-19985" />/> Let me explain the concept behind the ring: the ring will stick your device, and then you can slide your finger into the ring, which ensures safety to your device. Sliding your finger into the ring does not get in the way of landscape gaming, because that’s where your fingers would be even without the ring in place. Thanks to the wonderful design of the Bunker Ring, installation takes a matter of seconds. The bottom plate of the ring’s matte finish has a sort of adhesive that lets you stick it onto your device. You can stick it wherever and in whatever direction. Because of the swivel nature of the ring itself, the position at which the plate is stuck down does not matter; you can turn it, so it’s comfortable no matter how you’re holding your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Plus, the ring is made out of a flexible rubber, so you’re not getting any sort of chafing or scratches on your finger.

href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-19986">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/IMG_1791-300x225.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_1791" width="300" height="225" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-19986" />The second purpose that the Bunker Ring is built for, is to stand up your device hands-free. By turning the ring into the proper direction, you can stand up your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It works reliably, and with the ability to stick the ring anywhere on the back of your device, you’re getting an almost endless amount of viewing positions.

Naturally, you wouldn’t put the responsibility to keeping your iDevice from smashing to the ground in the hands of anything with the size of the Bunker Ring. Though, for its size, it’s got a killer grip if you have correctly installed the accessory. When you’re done using the Bunker Ring, you can pull it off with ease; no residue is left behind, and the sticky adhesive doesn’t wear off immediately, anyways.

You’re getting your money’s worth here. A solid accessory that serves two purposes, and sells for cheap, isn’t something you can easily pass up. The Bunker Ring onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thehishop.com/iphone4/ths-bunker-ring-black.html');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">is available for $14.95, so check it out if what was said above peaked your interest in any way.

Apple part of $4.5 billion Nortel patent acquisition, Google not

According to Reuters, a consortium of tech companies, including Apple, BlackBerry maker RIM, Microsoft, EMC, Sony, and Ericsson have won the auction to acquire Nortel’s mammoth $4.5 billion dollar mobile patent portfolio. How much of that will come from Apple is currently unknown, though RIM is on the line for $770 million and Ericsson, $340 million. The companies are expected to pool the patents and use them both to protect against patent lawsuits and, of course, launch lawsuits of their own.

Apple part of $4.5 billion Nortel patent acquisition

The patents cover “wireless, wireless 4G, data networking, optical, voice, Internet and semiconductor technologies”, with the LTE 4G patents expected to become extremely valuable as networks and devices are upgraded to that standard.

If you noticed one major mobile company conspicuous by their absence, you’re not alone. Google appears not to have been part of the winning bid, which is perplexing since, as a new entrant in mobile, they have one of the weakest existing patent portfolios.

“Google lost an unprecedented opportunity to acquire a major bargaining chip that would strengthen it at the mobile industry’s intellectual property negotiating table.”

“I’m afraid it won’t get a similar opportunity in quantitative and qualitative terms any time soon.”

Android manufacturers are already paying Microsoft licensing fees for Android, and are being sued by Apple. Android developers are being sued by Lodsys and while Apple has filed to intervene in the iOS-related lawsuits, Google is still missing in action.

What that means going forward is hard to say, but manufacturer and developer confidence is part of the currency of any platform and it needs to be invested in and protected.

You may soon be able to run multiple iPhone apps on your iPad with a new jailbreak tweak [jailbreak]

A new jailbreak tweak may soon allow you to run multiple iPhone apps on screen at the same time — on your iPad. iOS hacker Aaron Ash has written a tweak that will allow you to do just that.

Yes, and it actually works! I’ve wasted plenty of time already playing 2 games of Angry Birds at the same time. (I actually was playing 3 for a while, but it crashed when I tried to add a 4th). There are a few bugs, such as audio not working, and accelerometer events not getting sent to applications; it may take a while to sort these out.

Aaron plans on visiting a Jailbreak meet-up in New York later this month and may demonstrate it there. This tweak is very interesting, you could be watching a video in one window, playing a game in another and updating your twitter stream in the third. We hope will be available soon. Of course we are still waiting for the iPad 2 jailbreak…

Part makers prepare for iPhone 5 release in October, possible iPad 3 before next year?

Digitimes reports that component makers are preparing materials to begin production of the iPhone 5 for an October release, with signs pointing to the iPad 3 dropping before the end of the year as well.

Taiwan-based companies included in the supply chain for iPhone 5 and iPad 3 have begun to prepare materials for the production of the two devices

According to their sources, production of the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 should begin in August and ramp up in September with the iPhone 5 hitting sometime in October.

Most rumors have narrowed the iPhone 5 release to September. It’s unclear what the release window for the iPad 3 would be, and it’s important to keep in mind that Digitimes has been hit-or-miss with their predictions in the past. Earlier this month they reported iPad 3 component suppliers gained Apple certification for a 2012 release, which goes against these new reports. Both Daring Fireball and TechCrunch have pointed to a “fall surprise” related to a new iPad, possibly iPad 3 earlier this year.

TiPb has independently heard that October is likely for iPhone 5, and that there could quite possibly be a new iPad, perhaps a revised iPad 2 or iPad 3, this fall as well. Regardless of the rumors, however, Apple can and will move things around based on production and marketing needs, so no one knows for certain until Apple makes the official announcements.

Verizon iPhone Sales Slow In Build Up To iPhone 5

According to an Analyst, Verizon iPhone 4 sales are slowing down, possibly due to the inevitable arrival of the iPhone 5. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst Jason Armstrong said that Verizon will probably report a drop in sales for the device in Q2 of this year, hitting marginally below the 2.2 million units they shipped in Q1.

It’s previously been argued by some, including John Gruber, that bringing the iPhone to Verizon has seen Android plateau while iOS start to climb as people get the phone they want on the network they want.

My gut feeling is that sales are starting to slow as everyone holds off for the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 or whatever it is that Apple decides to sell next, expected to launch this Autumn.

Judges Rule Against Kodak In Legal Dispute

Well, sort of. It’s complicated. In the ongoing legal battle with Kodak, the ITC has gone back and forth a number of time on the camera company’s claims. Yesterday the ITC failed to deliver a clear victory for Kodak, sending their shares plummeting. The ITC were re-analyzing a ruling that Kodak’s patents hadn’t been violated. Instead of deciding clearly one way or the other, they instead sent it back for further review. They upheld part of the ruling, rejecter part of it, and sent it back to the judge, who will have to wait at least until the end of August to make a ruling again.

Yeah, complicated. The confusing world of patent trolls, folks.
