1-Bit Ninja App Review – Skeptic into Believer

When I first heard about Ben Hopkin’s, a.k.a Kode80′s, newest endeavor on the iOS platform, I wasn’t too sure how successful the finished product would actually be. After all, the game was advertised as a platformer without d-pad controls, but instead with a different control scheme that did not allow you to travel backwards in its many levels. Any actual gamer knows that a platformer on the iOS platform must have virtual, on-screen controls. Though I was pretty skeptical about how the whole thing would work, the execution and the pure brilliance of the copy that was released today onto the app store has changed my mind; onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/1-bit-ninja/id427083185?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">1-bit Ninja is an elite among its fellow applications on the app store.

At first glance, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/1-bit-ninja/id427083185?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">1-bit Ninja looks a lot like a Paper Mario replicate. The gameplay has you controlling a 1-bit ninja, with an overall object of getting from left to right, while avoiding the threat of 1-bit enemies and jumping across platforms. Though they share that in common, they also differ a whole lot. Through a series of clever, overlapping layers, developer Ben Hopkins has created a 3D illusion only visible when dragging the top part of the iPhone’s screen. This new view, able to be seen whenever, while playing, reveals secret passageways that would otherwise not be visible, unless you have a keen eye built to see 3D in a 2D world. (See below for example; another example can be found onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/imageshack.us/photo/my-images/101/ibitninja2.png/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">here)/> href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-19113">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ibitninja1.png" alt="" title="ibitninja1" width="640" height="213" class="size-full wp-image-19113" />

The developer was aiming to incorporate a new control scheme into the game, rather than a regular, old d-pad, and that’s exactly what he did. I was pretty skeptical when I first heard about the control scheme, because most successful platformers on iOS have included d-pads, but after playing, my initial approach disappeared. Once you play for a bit, and get used to them, the controls feel natural. Pressing down on the left bottom side of the screen, will make the ninja run, while pressing on the right bottom side, will make it jump. The controls will involve timing to perfectly land your jumps, whether it be from platform to platform or landing on an enemy’s head (will kill it), as they don’t allow you to move backwards. In other words, you can only travel forwards.

That’s where the clever level design comes into play. Where there are secret passageways, there are also secret coins that can be collected to add more challenge. Not only do you have to look for them, but they can also be located in peculiar places, which often involve multiple tries to get to; plus, there are five in each level. In fact, you’ll probably play each level at-least a few dozen times before you finish. It would be nice if the game would display some basic facts, such as amount of times died, number of enemies killed, and so on.

Levels are unlocked successfully: you play the first, the second is unlocked, and so forth. There are four worlds, each with five levels. To move on to the next level, you do not have to collect all five of the hidden secrets; they are just included for extra challenge. Though if you do, then two additional modes will be unlocked for each level. These include a full 3D mode and an easier-to-drag-and-see-3D mode.

Progressively, the game gets more and more difficult. New enemies will be introduced, level design gets more tough, and other obstacles factor in. I’ve got to say that 1-bit Ninja is easily one of the most difficult, non-puzzle game I’ve ever played. From the beginning to the end, you’ll feel like pulling out each and every one of your hairs, putting them back on, and then pulling them out again. If you can successfully beat the game without ever thinking about smashing your iPhone on the ground repeatedly, you can proudly say you’re a relaxed person. I, sadly, cannot.

With chiptunes included for, evidently, every world, the music running in the background almost never gets too hard on your ears; unless you’re stuck on a level for an infuriating amount of time. Similarly, the retro artwork looks absolutely stunning with the patterns and shading.

When every element, that has been described above, comes together, the finished product is a flawless, iconic game that proves what single, indie developers can achieve. Developer Ben Hopkins, congratulations are creating such a wonderful game that oozes polish and love. Folks, you can’t pass down onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/1-bit-ninja/id427083185?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">1-bit Ninja – not for $100 and certainly not for $1.99.

Just like us, Samsung not allowed to see iPhone 5 until fall

The judge hearing the Apple vs. Samsung “copy-cat” lawsuit has denied a motion by Samsung asking that Apple allow Samsung’s outside council advanced looks at iPhone 5 and iPad 3. The judge had previously granted Apple’s request for Apple’s outside council to look at Samsung’s upcoming devices, since Samsung had already shown off or given away previews to the press and public. Apple, however, keeps their stuff secret. But of course, it’s not that simple:

Samsung is free to argue, for instance, that there is little likelihood of confusion because consumers will not encounter its products side-by-side with the iPhone 4 or iPad 2, but rather with Apple’s next generation iPhone and iPad. Similarly, as to proximity, Samsung is free to argue that because the iPhone 4 and iPhone 2 will soon be outmoded and reduced in price, they are not being sold (or very soon will not be sold) to the same class of purchasers who are likely to buy new Samsung products. By choosing to allege infringement only of its current products, Apple opens itself up to these arguments.

Says Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents:

[Apple] might want to proceed cautiously and wait with a preliminary injunction motion until the iPhone 5 can be shown, or present only a tablet-related motion in the very near term and a smartphone-related one a little later.

We’ll see how bold or conservative Apple is.

And Samsung. If they really wanted to have fun with this, their CEO to start dressing in jeans and black mock turtleneck…

PopCap Games to Be Acquired for over $1 Billion

The gaming giant, target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">PopCap Games is onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/techcrunch.com/2011/06/22/popcap-games-to-be-acquired-for-1-billion/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">said to be being acquired for over $1 billion by TechCrunch’s sources. The even bigger giant, who is making the purchase, is not known for sure, although Zynga was at first an obvious candidate. TC’s sources say that the company did make offers, though could not finally satisfy PopCap’s wants. Zynga has been on a company-buying-spree, as they have bought 12 gaming companies in the past 12 months.

The next possibility is Electronic Arts, a huge figure of gaming. Making games for iOS and pretty much all other platforms, in all of the possible genres, I wouldn’t put it past EA to make such a big acquisition. Although $1 billion out of their market cap of $7.49 billion would be a large chunk.

Other possibilities are DeNA (company that acquired ngmoco for $300 million) and Chinese company Tencent. Once the solid news arises, I’ll update this post letting you know all of the details.

Apple COO Tim Cook Spotted at China Mobile HQ

Apple’s COO (Chief Operating Officer) was spotted at China Mobile’s headquarters. Currently, iPhones are only available in China for customers of China Unicom, a carrier with had 179.34 million customers as of May. The much bigger company, China Mobile, with over 600 million customers (largest wireless carrier in the world), could represent a huge deal for Apple – in fact, it would be the biggest partnership for them, which could bring in a whole bunch of extra revenue./>id="attachment_19164" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 500px">href="http://www.ip4help.com" rel="attachment wp-att-19164">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/tim-cook.jpg" alt="" title="tim cook" width="490" height="367" class="size-full wp-image-19164" />class="wp-caption-text">COO of Apple, Tim Cook at China Mobile HQ

Despite mentioning of a deal back in May on China Mobile’s part, Apple has yet to reveal what they’ve got planned for the carrier, if anything at all. After all, this whole thing could be unsuccessful in the end. New Patent Could Allow Apple to Demand High Licensing Fees From Other OS Developers

rel="attachment wp-att-19128" href="http://www.ip4help.com">class="alignleft size-full wp-image-19128" src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/apple-touchscreen-patent-195x300.gif" alt="" width="195" height="300" />An iPhone patent that Apple filed for over three-years ago could spell trouble for other multitouch mobile OS developers. Apple was awarded patent number 7,966,578, for a “Portable multifunction device, method, and graphical user interface for translating displayed content.” Basically, depending on how the entire patent is interpreted, Apple could have control over all capacitive screen and multitouch interface devices. The same interface commonly used by other smartphone manufacturers and Android devices.

Patent expert Florian Muller told onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.macworld.com/article/160664/2011/06/apple_iphone_patent.html');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">MacWorld “In the smartphone patent wars no other company seeks to drive competitors out of business the way Apple does. The only way companies can deal with Apple is if they bring patents to the table that Apple needs. In that case, there can be a cross-license. If you don’t have that bargaining power, tough luck.”

Muller said that Apple could now have the power to demand licensing fees from other companies like HTC, Samsung and Motorolo.

Another patent expert told onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2387401,00.asp');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ip4help.com">PCMag that unless the patent is invalidated that Apple could use it to “stifle innovation and bully competitors.”

Matt Schruers, the vice president for law and policy with the non-profit Computer and Communications Industry Association added that the patent is so “broad,” that it would be difficult for companies to find a different technological approach to get around it.

id="more-19127">

There is a glimmer of hope for other smartphone competitors, it’s possible that Apple could only use the patent when applied directly to the iPhone. However, it could still create problems for these touchscreen device manufactures.

Incipio DRX case for iPhone 4 — accessory review

The Incipio DRX case for iPhone 4 is, in my opinion, one of Incipio’s best cases to date — and they’ve made some very good cases. Everything from the way it feels in your hand to how it adds virtually no bulk to your iPhone makes it a great investment. It also offers decent protection as well.

Click through for a complete review and some pictures!

The first thing you always notice when putting on a new case is how it feels in your hand. This case feels great. The material is slick but not slick enough that your phone is going to go flying out of your hand. It’s also extremely easy to put on and take off. I’ve had it on for a little over a week and it doesn’t seem to stretch out or lose its shape either.

Your buttons are all covered which means no dirt or dust can get in there. Covered buttons normally mean they are harder to press. That’s not the case with the DRX. The buttons are just as easy to push as they are when there is no case on the device. The case also produces a click feedback when pushing the buttons, which is nice.

The case comes all the way around and over the top of the antenna band which means you can set your phone face down for privacy and not have to worry about whether or not your iPhone screen is going to get scratched. The dock connector, headphone jack, and vibrate switch are easily accessible as well. I haven’t had any issues with any chargers, official or third party. They all fit perfectly. So do my Bose headphones.

The DRX provides a pretty substantial level of protection as well. It’ll protect you from moderate drops. If you plan on throwing your iPhone into a wall, I can’t promise any case would protect it except an Otterbox. Overall, if you are somewhat careful with your iPhone and just want a case that’ll protect you from moderate accidental drops, this case is perfect. You can find the Incipio DRX case in the TiPb accessory store. If you use this case or something else, let us know in the comments!

Angry Birds Take Over the World

The Angry Birds are everywhere! Movies, board games, super bowl commercials, lunch boxes, Google Chrome, stuffed animals, t-shirts, and various versions of the original game. Are the Angry Birds taking over the world?

Angry Birds fans just got a new update that included not only new levels but also a new bird. Angry Birds Seasons has also just released an update. This update will be called Summer Pignic and features the tagline: “One bird, one mission: Save the eggs from the green pigs”.

All of the hype seems to be continuing on at a steady pace. Give us your thoughts. Are you tired of the birds or can you not get enough?

Rovio Releases Angry Birds: Summer Pignic Trailer

Not ones to let a good thing get away from them, Rovio have just teased another Angry Birds title, Angry Birds: Summer Pignic. iPhone 4S To Have A5 Processor, 8MP Cam Says Bloomberg

As if to run exactly counter to yesterday’s radical redesign rumor, Bloomberg is saying that the next edition of the iPhone won’t see major physical changes. Their sources peg the update to hit September, and that the phone will have an A5 processor, and an 8-megapixel camera. They’re also claiming that the next iPad will see a resolution bump, similar to where the iPhone 4 is now.

Reaction to the rumor of a major iPhone redesign has been mixed, but Jeff Bertolucci from PC World has taken it on himself to disprove the rumor singlehandedly. Like I said when we first ran the story: grain of salt.

Apple Scores Patent That Covers Every Smartphone

In a major IP victory, Apple has been awarded an astonishingly broad reaching patent which could score it a cut of every smartphone on the market. As PCMag explains, Apple filed patent number 7,966,578 three and a half years ago, and yesterday it was awarded — and the patent is broad enough that it covers all touch smartphones. The patent covers any touchscreen device that displays content and interacts with finger gestures. That’s it. In other words every smartphone with a touchscreen, every tablet, every iPod Touch ripoff. They’re all covered under this patent.

Theoretically, this means that Apple can demand licensing rights from every smartphone manufacturer on the planet, and could get a cut of every phone sold. It also could mean the beginning of a new round of massive inter-company legal battles.

As much as I’m a screaming Apple fanboy, I find this patent extremely worrying. Awarding Apple a patent on something this broad does nothing to foster innovation, nor does it protect creators. It’s just patent trolling. And it could have dire effects on the industry.

Amazon launching iPad competitor this fall?

Amazon launching iPad competitor this fall?

Hit and miss rumor site Digitimes is reporting that Kindle-maker Amazon is set to launch their own, fully featured, iPad competitor as early as August/September. That’s to catch the lucrative holiday sales period.

Amazon adopts processors developed by Texas Instruments, with Taiwan-based Wintek to supply touch panels, ILI Technology to supply LCD driver ICs and Quanta Computer responsible for assembly, the sources indicated. Monthly shipments are expected to be 700,000-800,000 units.

Amazon will provide streaming movie services for users of its tablet PCs, the sources noted.

So far no, not Google’s manufacturing partners Samsung or Motorola with the Galaxy Tab or Xoom, not RIM’s Playbook, have come anywhere close to encroaching on iPad’s tens of millions of units sold. HP will be fielding the TouchPad in just over a week, but like TiPb’s been saying from the start — there’s no tablet market yet, just an iPad market.

And with rumors Apple might introduce an iPad 3 or iPad 2 variant this fall, there’s no signs of anyone catching up yet either.

Can Amazon change that? Or would they still just be bringing content to an experience fight?

Apple Working On A TV?

The rumor that Apple has a TV in the works has been one that periodically resurfaces without much basis. We’re not talking about the AppleTV set-top box, but a complete television set, based around iOS. Today’s rumor comes from DailyTech, and according to a “former Apple executive, speaking with us on condition of anonymity,” Apple wants to go into the TV business. ”You’ll go into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV.  It’s perfect,” he said.

Sorry folks, but without some pretty substantial evidence, I’m not ready to buy it. I’d be very, very surprised if this rumor had any legs, and that Apple was really considering a fully integrated TV set that you could buy from an Apple store, when they can sell a box which does exactly that on any TV for $99, and not have to deal with screen manufacturers.

Bloomberg: Apple preparing faster iPhone 5 for September with 8 mega-pixel camera

Game developers testing Apple A5-chip equipped iPhone 4?

Bloomberg has jumped into the iPhone 5 rumor game, saying that the next generation iPhone will launch in September with the same form factor as the current iPhone 4.

This is in stark contrast to yesterday’s rumors from BGR, which claimed an August release for a redesigned iPhone 5.

Bloomberg also claim its sources confirmed a few other rumors that we have heard before. It claims Apple is working on a new iPad with a resolution of a third higher than the iPad 2; with a more responsive touchscreen. This one is a bit sketchy due to the problems this would cause developers. It also resurrected the rumor of a cheaper iPhone for developing countries, which could be the basis for the long standing iPhone nano rumors. This, it says, will use the current chip and screen of the iPhone 4. Sounds like the iPhone 4 will more likely just become the cheaper option for carriers just as the iPhone 3GS is now.

TiPb keeps hearing a September/October release timeframe for iPhone 5, along with the possibility of another iPad this year, and the “iPhone nano” device, in whatever form it takes, so there may well be something to this. What do you think?

Jailbreak Tweak Lets You Send Emails, Tweets From Notification Center

We’ve already looked at some of the incredible widgets that people have tucked into Notification Center, and today another extremely useful tweak came to light. QuickComposer will be available through Cydia in the near future, and this tweak gives you quick access to a number of programs from within Notification Center. Once you’re in the Notification Center, you can fire off a quick email through your default account, send an SMS or Tweet,  write a note or set a reminder.

Now, it’s arguable that there’s not much difference between these and just having the icons on the first page of your homescreen where you can access them easily, but from what I understand they launch right into the new message composer (or equivalent) for each app, rather than its main page.

Poll: Would you buy an Apple television?

Would you buy an Apple television? DailyTech is resurrecting that old rumor again this week with a claim that a former Apple exec spilled the beans on the project:

Apple plans to “blow Netflix and all those other guys away” by bundling Apple TV + iTunes inside physical television sets. According to the source Apple is teaming up with a major supplier (our guess would be Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEO:005930)), to provide the physical televisions, which will be rebranded as Apple television sets.

They’re also claiming a fall launch date to coincide with iPhone 5 and potentially iPad 3, and alongside the usual new iPods and probably an Apple TV with an A5 processor.

The last time rumors of an Apple television hit their peak, we got a 27-inch iMac, so who knows what Apple is really brewing up in the Cupertino labs. A 32-inch iMac? Anything is possible so we’ll go back to the question at the top of the post — if Apple ever did release a television set, would you buy it? Or are you happy with the $100 Apple TV option?

Vote in the poll and tell us how you really feel in the comments below!
