Ever wanted to know the exact percentage of battery life that your iPhone has remaining, and wondered how to turn that on? • Turn on the toggle for Battery Percentage

That’s it, you will now see the percentage of battery life remaining in the top notification bar throughout the operating system screens.

Facebook Messenger Gets Released

Facebook has just released a brand new app for iOS and Android href="https://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=10150249543542131">in the form of Facebook Messenger. Rather than adding functionality to the Facebook app, this is a complete standalone app that allows you to instantly get into Facebook messages.

You can use the tool to message any of your Facebook friends or text anyone in your phonebook, send out messages to groups of people, and attach locations and photos.

It’s available right now href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/facebook-messenger/id454638411?mt=8">in the App Store, and is based off of Beluga, a company Facebook acquired recently.

Now, how about fixing your iPhone app, releasing one for the iPad, and making chat usable on your website? How does that sound?

Apple and Exxon Flirt Over Being Most Valuable Company In The World

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/aaplvsxom.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22985" title="aaplvsxom" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/aaplvsxom.jpg" alt="" width="464" height="282" />

The stock market is busy collapsing like my attempts at a souffle — which has caused all sorts of repercussions to the market. Not in the least is the fact that it has caused some jostling among Apple and Exxon over which of the two companies is the most valuable publicly traded company in the world. Around 10:30AM this morning, Apple passed Exxon for the first time ever, $341.55 billion to $341.42 billion.

The two danced over the course of the day, but ended with ExxonMobile barely retaining their first place with a market cap of $348.32 billion while Apple hit $346.74 billion.

[via href="http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/09/apple-now-ranks-as-most-valuable-company-in-the-world/">MacRumors]

This as all based on market cap, which to put simply is the share price times the number of shares around.

Apple the most valuable company in the world… briefly.

Apple the most valuable company in the world... briefly.

Apple’s market cap briefly rose higher than Exxon today, temporarily making Apple the most valuable company in the world.

Whether or not Apple again rises above Exxon, and whether or not they manage to stay that way for a while, it’s still a huge milestone for a once-struggling tech company unsure if it could remain in business, let alone surpass the glories of their past.

Congrats, Apple.

Chinese Smugglers Use Zip Line To Sneak iPads Around Customs

Chinese smugglers used a zip line in an attempt to smuggle over $46,583 worth of iPads and iPhones through China.

Custom officials broke up the elaborate operation and arrested six individuals who were using a 300-metre line pulley system, and a black nylon bag to move 100 iPads and iPhones across providence boarders. The smugglers were attempting to sell the devices at a cheaper rate by avoiding Hong Kong and China’s independent taxes. Officials said it took around two-minutes for the gear to be lowered from the 21st floor of a building located in the city of Shenzhen.

The smugglers tried to use the cover of darkness to avoid being detected, but custom officials busted them after a major sting operation. You can see the pulley system in a Chinese news report posted on onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR4kjyfpZos&feature=player_embedded');" target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR4kjyfpZos&feature=player_embedded">YouTube.

I wonder what they did with the cache of goods after they confiscated them?

Facebook Messenger App Available For iPhone and Android

Facebook tapped into their newly acquired group messaging firm onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/facebook-burns-a-little-cash-buys-group-messaging-and-digital-b/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/facebook-burns-a-little-cash-buys-group-messaging-and-digital-b/">Beluga to develop a Facebook Messenger app for the iPhone and Android devices.

Facebook Messenger is a separate app from the regular Facebook app that simplifies messaging. Users can use one click to communicate with friends on Facebook or in their phone contacts.

The new app saves all your conversations, including text and e-mails, in one place, allowing you to see the entire exchange while on your phone or computer.

The barebones app also offers the ability to share your location and attach photos to your messages.

You can download the app via iTunes starting today.

Introducing Facebook Messenger for iPhone

Facebook Messenger for iPhone

Facebook has introduced a second app for iPhone, this time a dedicated Facebook Messenger to help you get your IM on. Sadly, it’s not a universal binary so you’re limited to chunky double fuzzy on iPad. Sure, the regular Facebook for iPhone app might still be buggy, and Facebook for iPad exists only as a hack, but for hardcore Facebook Message users, this will no doubt be appreciated.

Apple granted preliminary injunction, Samsung barred from selling Galaxy Tab 10.1 in most of European Union

Apple granted preliminary injunction, Samsung barred from selling Galaxy Tab 10.1 in most of European Union

According to the German news agency, dpa, Apple has been granted its motion for a preliminary injunction against Samsung, resulting in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 being barred for sale in all European Union nations with the exception of the Netherlands. (Apple has a separate injunction awaiting ruling in the Netherlands.)

This injunction relates only to the design of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which Apple alleges “blatantly imitate the appearance of Apple’s products to capitalize on Apple’s success”.

Samsung must now remove all Galaxy Tab 10.1 stock and refrain from advertising in most of the EU, just one short week after the official launch.

Apple had previously filed trade dress as well as patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung, calling them a “copyist”. However, this is still early days. The preliminary injunction may not become permanent, Apple and Samsung may come to a settlement, or Samsung may alter the design of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in order to no longer be found infringing.

More as this develops.

Photo Filters To Be Built Into iOS 5

When Apple href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/apple-releases-ios-5-beta-5-to-developers/2011/08/06/">released iOS 5 beta 5, href="http://www.bgr.com/2011/08/06/heres-the-full-change-log-for-ios-5-beta-5/">BGR posted a full change log, but in reading it we missed a rather interesting detail: the addition of filters to iOS. href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/08/filter-this/">TechCrunch spotted the new feature, which is part of an overhaul in how iOS handles photos:

Several filters have been added since beta 1. The current list now includes the following filters: CIAdditionCompositing, CIAffineTransform, CICheckerboardGenerator, CIColorBlendMode, CIColorBurnBlendMode, CIColorControls, CIColorCube, CIColorDodgeBlendMode, CIColorInvert,CIColorMatrix, CIColorMonochrome, CIConstantColorGenerator, CICrop, CIDarkenBlendMode, CIDifferenceBlendMode, CIExclusionBlendMode, CIExposureAdjust, CIFalseColor, CIGammaAdjust,CIGaussianGradient, CIHardLightBlendMode, CIHighlightShadowAdjust, CIHueAdjust, CIHueBlendMode, CILightenBlendMode, CILinearGradient, CILuminosityBlendMode,CIMaximumCompositing, CIMinimumCompositing, CIMultiplyBlendMode, CIMultiplyCompositing, CIOverlayBlendMode, CIRadialGradient, CISaturationBlendMode, CIScreenBlendMode,CISepiaTone, CISoftLightBlendMode, CISourceAtopCompositing, CISourceInCompositing, CISourceOutCompositing, CISourceOverCompositing, CIStraightenFilter, CIStripesGenerator,CITemperatureAndTint, CIToneCurve, CIVibrance, CIVignette, and CIWhitePointAdjust.

CI is Core Image, a new set of tools that should make for faster and better photography apps. And this list shows off dozens of what look just like popular filters for Instagram and the like.

This could mean that many of these filters come built into your Camera app, but you can bet that iOS 5 will see a tsunami of crappy filtering photo apps — as if there weren’t enough already.

I just hope that the likes of Instagram can keep their head above water, and keep making their own version which looks even better.

An App Store Battle: Ridiculous Fishing Gets A Blatant Copy, Ninja Fishing

Recently a developer, Vlambeer claimed that another developer’s iOS game in the making, Gamenauts’ Ninja onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.huntandfishfinders.com');" target="_blank" title="Fishing" href="http://www.huntandfishfinders.com">Fishing, was a copy of their original fishing title. That so called “ripoff” rolled onto the App Store just a few days ago, while Vlambeer’s official title is still in the making for iOS as a revamped, more modern version of the classic.

If a game has not yet been released, how could Vlambeer have claimed the rights to the idea? They have previously released a game, that predates Ninja Fishing’s existence by at-least a year, dubbed Radical Fishing. See the two trailers for the games:

Radical Fishing/> src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/15297796?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="640" height="480" frameborder="0">

onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/vimeo.com/15297796');" target="_blank" href="http://vimeo.com/15297796">Radical Fishing – Teaser from onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/vimeo.com/vlambeer');" target="_blank" href="http://vimeo.com/vlambeer">Vlambeer on onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/vimeo.com');" target="_blank" href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo.

Now take a look at Ninja Fishing’s trailer:/> width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fn6Ky0JMt8Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

See how similar the two titles are? Just a bit after the claim was made on Vlambeer’s part, they also revealed an iOS version of Radical Fishing, entitled Ridiculous Fishing that they had been working on secretly.

From a gamer’s perspective, with absolutely no sympathy involved whatsoever, I’d say this copycat that has recently been released on the App Store is good for the success of Ridiculous Fishing. Vlambeer will have to improve their game much more to entice potential buyers to buy their game rather than Ninja Fishing. They’ve got to put in some sort of irresistible allure, some feature that blows the pants off of Gamenaut’s copy, because Ninja Fishing is currently rocking the house; it’s, in other words, incredibly fun.

It’s kind of sad to see developers be robbed of their games almost entirely. Save for the fact that the names differ, the two applications are almost the same exact thing. We’ve previously seen things like this happen, in the form of either a flash version of a game being ported over to iOS by someone other than the official developer, or a develop hoping to feed off of another application’s success by releasing their own application with an all-too similar name of gameplay premise. A few examples are The Blocks Cometh, Tiny Skater and Super Mega Worm. It’s like piracy – you can’t stop it.

If you have already bought Ninja Fishing, which many people already have, and are liking it, please remember to also try and purchase Vlambeer’s Ridiculous Fishing when it launches in the future. It’s seeming like it’s going to be an awesome game, kudos to the artwork that is shown in the following pictures:/>

Apple still intent on intervening in Lodsys developer lawsuits

Apple still intent on intervening in Lodsys developer lawsuits

When patent troll Lodsys started suing App Store developers, Apple filed a motion to intervene on developers’ behalf and, not surprisingly, Lodsys objected. So now Apple has doubled down, insisting on a hearing and answering all of Lodsys’ objections. If the court sides with Apple, Lodsys won’t be staring down rag tag legals teams of assorted sizes. They’ll be stared down by Apple legal.

Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents outlines Apple’s 6 areas of response, which he says “tears into pieces” Lodsys’ arguments.

In today’s reply brief, which I have uploaded to Scribd, Apple still requests a court hearing on its motion. Things may still take some more time, but there will be no more written pleadings unless the court asks the parties to address particular questions in more detail. At this stage it’s possible that the court decides very quickly, and I continue to be reasonably optimistic that Apple’s motion will be granted.

By contrast, despite a blog post rant against Apple and Microsoft last week, Google still remains utterly and depressingly silent when it comes to Android developers being sued by Lodsys.

Did AOL Just Release An App That Doesn’t Suck?

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.oesqwbsx.480x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22977" title="mzl.oesqwbsx.480x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/mzl.oesqwbsx.480x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="360" height="480" />

On the 2nd of August, href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/editions-by-aol/id447687307?mt=8">Editions by AOL made its way to the iPad, slipping completely under my radar. I don’t even remember hearing about it, but if I did, I probably dismissed it as being another AOL instafail. It appears I may have been completely wrong on that. This free to download news magazine has been getting extremely good reviews, and looks like it borrows a bit from Zite and Flipboard.

FastCompany recently href="http://www.fastcompany.com/1771742/huffington-post-ghost-aol-ipad-mag-editions-forgets-aol-content-techcrunch">interviewed the creators — and what’s striking is that even though this is an AOL venture, it doesn’t give any extra weight to the company’s properties when picking content.

Could this finally be something AOL has done that isn’t completely horrible?

Apple number one portable maker… if you count iPad

Apple number one portable maker... if you count iPad

That rocket ship-like Apple uptake in the chart above occurs when you count iPad along with notebooks as one, giant portable market. If you don’t count it, Apple falls behind the likes of Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Samsung.

While no doubt debate will continue to rage over just how to meld the PC and post-PC categories, and the tablet iPad market, Deutsche Bank’s Chris Whitmore makes the following case:

Within the computing market, we see significant opportunity for Apple to take meaningful share in the second half as the Microsoft / PC ecosystem is relatively stagnant, lacking meaningful new offerings. On the other hand, Apple will be competing with an upgraded Mac OS, new MacBook Airs (and other forthcoming Macs) and a new iPad iOS. Within the Tablet market, the iPad remains the Gold Standard as competitors struggle for mindshare and traction (note HP’s price cuts on the TouchPad). Meanwhile, competing PC manufacturers have suggested Ultrabooks won’t ramp in material volumes until 2012 due to challenges driving price points meaningfully below Apple’s Air. As such, Apple appears particularly well positioned for more share gains heading into the back-to- school and holiday selling season.

Verizon to stop jailbreak tethering on its network from today?

According to a report by Forbes, Verizon will be rolling out a system to prevent jailbreak tethering apps like MyWi from working on its network. As of today, when using one of these apps, you will be redirected from the webpage that you wanted to visit to a specially prepared Verizon webpage where you will be asked to upgrade to an official tethering plan.

AT&T has also confirmed that it would be forcibly switching habitual jailbreak tetherers to its tethering plan but never given a date. It now looks like Verizon are following that lead. The slightly better news for Verizon users is that it will cost them an additional $20 a month for a tethering plan where the AT&T tethering plan is $45 a month.

If you are a Verizon iPhone subscriber and use MyWi to tether your device, have you noticed the webpage redirect?

While these are excellent deals, and one of the rare occasions where you’ll see a current gen iPhone on sale, you’d be foolish to take them up on it. The next iteration of the iPhone is due to launch in the next couple of months, so just hang on until it does. This is Radioshack’s way of clearing out old stock.

Apple Wants To Intervene Between Lodsys and Devs

The ongoing legal drama href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/?s=lodsys">with patent trolls Lodsys has quietened down slightly, but that doesn’t change the fact that many devs still have legal threats leveled against them for BS reasons. Good news, though Apple has finally waded into the fray. href="http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2011/08/apple-insists-to-intervene-in-lodsys.html">As reported by FOSS Patents, Apple filed a motion for an intervention, which Lodsys tried to block. Now Apple has ripped their arguments to shreds thanks to their legal team. While we’re still waiting on an official ruling on the intervention, hopefully this means that Apple will come along and utterly destroy Lodsys’ patent trolling ways.

That should at least be interesting.
