Here’s how to hide the Newsstand Icon in iOS 5

With iOS 5, Newstand is a fancy folder that houses all of your subscriptions. But what if you wanted to hide Newstand? Technically it’s a folder and iOS prohibits nesting of folders. We should caution that following this trick will hide Newstand within a folder, but it will also render it useless. Correction: It will crash your iPhone or iPad. This neat magic trick does require fast fingers, so be prepared to move and groove.

Newstand in folder

You could also push it off to some far away screen, but what’s the fun in that.

Tim Cook giving Apple employees extra time off over Thanksgiving

According to MacGenerations, new Apple CEO Tim Cook has sent out another company-wide email, this time to let Apple employees know they’ll be getting some extra time off at Thanksgiving or thereabouts.

    Team,

I consider it an honor to come to work every day alongside the most innovative and most dedicated people on earth. This is an extraordinary time to be at Apple, and it’s all made possible by your incredible efforts.

We’ve had a record-setting year so far and we’re heading into the holidays with the strongest product lineup in our history. Customers are absolutely in love with the iPad 2, and the amazing new iPhone 4S is off to the best start of any iPhone we’ve ever made. The Mac is soaring to new heights with OS X Lion, and on the eve of its 10th birthday, the iPod is still the world’s most popular music player.

In recognition of the hard work you’ve put in this year, we’re going to take some extra time off for Thanksgiving. We will shut down with pay on November 21, 22 and 23 so our teams can spend the entire week with their families and friends.

Of course, Retail and some other groups will need to work that week so we can continue to serve our customers. If you’re in one of these groups, please check with your manager about taking time off at a later date. Our international teams will schedule their three-day shutdowns this quarter at a time that’s best for them. Details will be available on AppleWeb.

I hope everyone enjoys this much deserved break.

    Tim

    Off to a great start.

Steve Wozniak First In Line for iPhone 4S

According to a tweet from Steve Wozniak earlier today, he’s first in line for the iPhone 4S. One would think that the Woz would have some kind of pull at Apple to secure a new iPhone before the rest of us, right? Maybe he just enjoys the thrill of camping. In any event, if you are in the Los Gatos area, this provides Apple enthusiasts a chance to both get an iPhone 4S and meet Steve Wozniak.

Sprint Plans To Lock iPhone 4S, Then Offer Unlock To Good Customers

There has been some confusion about Sprint’s policy on unlocking the SIM card in the Sprint iPhone 4S, but Jason Snell of Macworld was able to get some clarity on the situation.

    Sprint iPhone 4S unlock

…the Sprint iPhone 4S will ship with its micro-SIM slot unlocked. However, Sprint now says that it will be locking that slot “shortly after launch” via an update pushed to those devices. After the slot has been locked, Sprint says that it will allow customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use in the future.

Verizon’s policy is to lock the micro-SIM card out of the gates, allowing customers to use a “roaming SIM card” that is tied to the users account. Standard practice for those who travel frequently outside of the U.S. is to purchase a local (read: low cost) SIM card, as to avoid hefty roaming charges.

Sprint’s official statement is as follows:

Sprint’s policy is to have the iPhone 4S SIM locked to our network domestically and internationally. At launch, the International SIM will be unlocked. We do expect a SIM lock to be pushed to the devices shortly after launch. We will then allow existing customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use if needed in the future.

Customers can sign up for one of our international rate plans and use this phone all over the world. When traveling internationally, there is a setting that must be turned on within the device to connect to GSM. The phone will work with a SIM that is provided within the device out of the box. International voice and data charges are on a pay-as-you-go basis and vary based on the country where the customer is using their phone; a list of rates is available at www.sprint.com/international.

Sprint offers two international voice plans that customers can subscribe to for discounted voice rates:

The Canada Roaming add-on is $2.99 per month and all calls placed from Canada are only 20 cents per minute. Without this add-on, calls from Canada are 59 cents per minute.

The Sprint Worldwide Voice add-on is $4.99 per month and offers discounted rates in countries around the world. For example, calls from Italy are $1.69 per minute with this add-on or $1.99 per minute without the add-on; calls from Peru are $2.29 per minute with the add-on or $2.49 per minute without it.

So if it’s a software update that gets pushed, theoretically one could avoid the update, thus keeping the unlock?

iCloud causing data clearing problems for iOS 5 apps

Marco Arment, creator of the popular Instapaper app for the iPhone and iPad, noticed an problem related to changes made in iOS 5 tied to iCloud backups.

A common scenario: an Instapaper customer is stocking up an iPad for a long flight. She syncs a bunch of movies and podcasts, downloads some magazines, and buys a few new games, leaving very little free space. Right before boarding, she remembers to download the newest issue of The Economist. (I think highly of my customers.) This causes free space to fall below the threshold that triggers the cleaner, which — in the background, unbeknownst to her — deletes everything that was saved in Instapaper. Later in the flight, with no internet connectivity, she goes to launch Instapaper and finds it completely empty.

(Last week, almost this exact scenario happened to one of my customers.)

Apps like eBook readers, podcast clients, offline mapping programs and even Apple’s own iBooks app (as long as Apple is following its own rules) would have its cached data wiped clean if ever the device runs low on space.

Hit the link below for Arment’s detailed explanation of the problem.

Reminder: iPhone 4S Goes on Sale Tomorrow

As a reminder to all, the newly announced iPhone 4S goes on sale publicly tomorrow. For all that missed the preorder period last week, this is the only opportunity to get your hands on the phone on release day. Your local Apple stores will be opening at 8 AM local time and will sell the phones on a first come, first serve basis.

As a refresher for anyone still on the fence between buying or not, the iPhone 4S has a total of 18 variations:

    White or black/> 8 GB ($199), 32 GB ($299) or 64 GB ($399)/> Verizon, AT&T or Sprint

And of course all of the above options are accompanied by a 2-year contract with your provider. If you’re looking for an unlocked phone, you’ll have to wait until November.

If you’re still indecisive, you may want to make up your mind very soon as there have already been reports of people starting to form lines in anticipation of the large rush to purchase the new iPhones beginning at 8 AM.

Put Your iPhone 4S Through The Paces With $0.99 Games

Gameloft has a nice big $0.99 sale dropping the price on some high quality games down to just a buck, which is the perfect opportunity to try out just how powerful that A5 processor is in the iPhone 4S that you’re getting tomorrow. You are getting one, right?

    The titles on sale are:

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six®: Shadow Vanguard for iPhone and iPad

N.O.V.A. 2 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance for iPhone and iPad

Dungeon Hunter 2 for iPhone and iPad

Shadow Guardian for iPhone and iPad

Spider-Man: Total Mayhem for iPhone and iPad

Somewhere in there should be a title you like, right? Sure, some of them are thinly veiled ripoffs of other franchises (NOVA=Halo, Shadow Guardian=Uncharted), but for a buck, who’s complaining?

How to setup your new iPhone 4S

How to setup your new iPhone 4S

Just get an iPhone 4S and curious how to get it set up so you can get going with it? No problem. With iCloud, you can get set up right on your iPhone, no cable, no iTunes desktop required! If you like to go old school, however, iTunes is still there for you. We recommend iCloud, but we’ll walk you through both option, below!

And if you need some extra assistance to get you started check out:

When you turn on your new device, you’ll now be presented with a screen that says iPhone, iPad touch, or iPad (depending on which device you’re setting up). Just swipe to unlock and you’re welcomed and invited to choose your preferred language. The most common language options will be immediately available but you can tap the down arrow to see others. Hit the Next button to pick. Apple will also provide you a default Country or Region based on where you bought your device, but you can tap Show More to expand the choices.

Interestingly, neither here nor in any later step are default choices pre-checked for you. You can’t simply keep hitting Next to speed through. You have to look at the choices and tap one to check it before the Next button will even activate. Apple is forcing you to pay more attention than is often required on the web or in apps.

Next you’re given a choice to globally enable or disable Location Services. Location Services use GPS, cell-tower triangulation, and Wi-Fi router mapping to determine the approximate location of your device. This feature is used for turn-by-turn navigation (like TomTom), check-in games (like FourSquare), social networks (like Facebook), geo-tagging (like in the Camera app), and utilities (like Siri and Find my iPhone), etc. Unless you have a particular need to globally disable it, you probably want to turn on the Location Services feature at this point. You can change your mind or selectively disable or enable these services later on in the Settings app (e.g., turn off your Camera app’s geo-tagging, but leave on TomTom’s turn-by-turn navigation).

You’ll need to connect to a Wi-Fi network to continue iCloud setup (if none is available, you’ll have to switch to iTunes setup instead.) Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will then connect to Apple’s servers to activate (the cord was cut from iTunes, not from Apple).

    You have the choice to

To set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch as a new device, sign in with your Apple ID (or tap through to create one). If you have multiple Apple IDs, for example a MobileMe ID, an iTunes ID, an ID associated with FaceTime or something else, you’ll have to choose which one you want to use. If you change your mind, you can login with a different ID later (and you can also login to different apps, like iTunes and iMessage, with separate IDs later). Agree to Apple’s Terms and Conditions and Apple will setup your ID and ask if you want to use iCloud or not. If you do — and most people should because it’s 1) free for the base level service, and 2) highly functional — you’ll be asked to enable iCloud Backup — and again, most people should. (It will create daily backups when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.)

Decide whether or not you want to enable Find my iPhone to help trace lost or stolen devices, and then choose if you want to share diagnostic information with Apple to help them improve the iOS experience.

    And you’re done.

You can also choose to restore based on a previous iCloud Backup. You’ll be asked to sign in with your Apple ID. Make sure it’s the same Apple/iCloud ID that you used to make your previous backups. Agree to the Terms and Conditions and you’ll be given a list of recent backups to choose from, including those of all iOS devices backed up to iCloud.

Pick your backup and iCloud will begin the restore. Then your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad will restart, all your settings nicely back where you left them, and iTunes will begin to re-download all the apps you had installed when the backup was made. If you live in countries where iTunes in the Cloud is available, iTunes will also re-download all the iTunes music, TV shows, and iBooks that were previously on your device. (You need to stay on Wi-Fi for large files to re-download.)

For security reasons, iOS may also prompt you to set a Passcode Lock, and not wait for you to go find it in Settings on your own.

Gone are the days when, after Apple released a software update, you had to rush back to your iTunes-equipped Windows or Mac PC, download a 500MB+ firmware file, backup your data, install the new OS version, and restore you data back to your device. You can now do all that, better and faster, right on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

When a Software Update is available, you’ll get a notification popup. The Settings app will also get badged, just like Mail. To get your update, go to Settings, tap on General, tap on Software Updates, and if it isn’t there waiting for you, tap on Check for Updates. When you see the update, tap Install.

The firmware will download and then your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad will restart and update.

Apple is now doing bit-differential, or delta file updates. That means only the bits that have changed need to be downloaded, not the entire firmware anymore. The update also happens in place, so you don’t need to backup and restore your data. Much more efficient and hence much faster.

You can still setup your new iPhone 4 the same way you’ve set up your previous iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad devices.

Plug into your Mac or Windows PC with the white USB Dock cable that came with your iPhone 4S. iTunes your device will be detected and displayed in the sidebar, and you’ll be asked to register it with Apple. If you have a MobileMe, iTunes Store, or other form of Apple ID you can log in with it and your information should pop up for you to check over. Either type it out or accept it and you’re good to go!

If you’re upgrading from a previous generation iPhone or iPod touch, iTunes will detect any backups you might have made and offer to restore your data for you. For example, if you’re moving from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4S, iTunes can setup your new phone to pretty much match your old. If you don’t want to do this, or if you don’t have any backups, iTunes will set up your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as new.

If you want to keep syncing with your home iTunes library but don’t want to have to tether to your Windows or Mac PC over USB, you now have the option to sync over Wi-Fi as well. Wi-Fi sync needs to be enabled in the Settings app, and you need to sync with iTunes over USB at least once to set it up, and you need to be plugged into power throughout, but if none of that dissuades you, Zune-like Wi-Fi sync is finally yours.

If you do choose to keep syncing with iTunes over USB, or you sync occasionally over USB to move over large files, like movies, you can now continue to use your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad while syncing. (Previously unlocking your device would cancel the sync.)

Depending on when exactly your new iPhone 4S was manufactured and shipped, it’s possible that it may have an older version of the software, iOS. Here’s how to check for updates, and get updated, using iTunes. (Though we strongly recommend you switch to iCloud updates, see below!)

How to put iOS 5 Newsstand into a Folder [Temporary]

How to put iOS 5 Newsstand into a Folder

While Apple’s new iOS 5 Newsstand is technically a Folder, and hence can’t be put into another Folder, The Coding Massacre has discovered a glitch in the Matrix that can let Newsstand haters banish it into another Folder… at least temporarily.

Basically, you create a new Folder and in the first few seconds, while iOS is getting its act together, you jam Newsstand in there before it can stop you. However, if you launch Newsstand, it will come screaming back out at you.

So file this under temporary work around if you hate the look of Newsstand so much, even a short break is better than none.

Scott Forstall: The “mini-Steve” behind iOS for iPhone and iPad

Scott Forstall, the man in charge of Apple’s Mobile Software Division and head of the iOS development team, was profiled by Bloomberg Businessweek, and they revealed a number of bits (facts or gossip, hard to tell) into how Forstall is an integral part of Apple’s executive team.

Forstall is described as a “mini-Steve” who obsesses over the little details that make Apple products great and knows when to say ‘No’ when needed. But the similarities to Steve don’t stop there.

Forstall is like Steve in one other important way: He can be, in what some of his co-workers might call an understatement, a polarizing figure. He’s won the intense loyalty and allegiance of many of his underlings, and his engineers are among the hardest workers at the company. At the same time, according to several former Apple employees, a number of high-ranking executives have left the company because they found working with Forstall so difficult [...] They say he has such a fraught relationship with other members of the executive team—including lead designer Jony Ive and Mac hardware chief Bob Mansfield—that they avoid meetings with him unless Tim Cook is present.

Despite some of these alleged relationship issues, Scott Forstall is considered to be the father of OS X Leopard, the Aqua interface, the App Store and the general principles of the iOS software that’s installed on every iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This has commanded a certain level of respect among Apple employees and is something of a feat for the 42-year-old (the youngest of the Apple executive team).

Forstall is also said to have been extremely close to Steve Jobs, one of his biggest mentors.

Forstall’s most recent triumphs are likely bittersweet. Over the last few years he watched as his biggest champion and mentor slowly lost an agonizing personal battle, all while products running his software have helped make Apple the most valuable company in the world. Apple has sold more than a quarter billion devices running Forstall’s iOS.

Interestingly, Forstall was the one who convinced Jobs to let engineers carry prototype iPhone units outside of the Apple campus for testing purposes, which ultimately led to the lost iPhone 4 debacle.

Before the iPhone 4 went to market, Forstall persuaded Jobs to allow dozens of his engineers to carry prototypes of the device to better test its network performance and minimize dropped calls, says a former Apple employee who was a manager at the time.

All in all, the profile on Scott Forstall is an amazing read and we’d suggest giving it a once-over to get an overall picture of how he’s helped Apple succeed in the mobile software industry.

UltraSn0w iPhone unlock for iOS 5 coming tomorrow?

iOS Dev-Team member MuscleNerd says that UltraSn0w will be updated as soon as tomorrow with support for iOS 5, allowing iPhone users to unlock their device to use on unsupported carriers.

will coordinate ultrasn0w iOS5 compatibility update to come out after a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow

Keep in mind that the UltraSn0w unlock will only work for 01.59.00, 05.11.07, 04.26.08, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00 basebands, so if your baseband differs from these you won’t be able to unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w until the Dev-Team finds a new exploit.

It’s currently possible to upgrade your iPhone to iOS 5 while preserving your baseband using the current version of RedSn0w, which you’ll also need to jailbreak your iPhone before starting.

Will you be unlocking your iPhone with UltraSn0w?

Apple adds a Tones store to iOS 5 iTunes app

With the release of iOS 5, Apple has added the ability to buy custom alert tones from the iTunes app on your device. If you open iTunes and click on Genres, you will see a new entry called Tones.

The iTunes Store on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch now includes the Tone Store — an incredible spectrum of music ringtones and alert tones that can be assigned to any alert setting on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

We already knew about Ringtones but these alerts are a completely new feature. Some of the Star Wars alerts are particularly impressive and comprehensive too. Alerts will cost $0.99 whilst Ringtones still cost $1.29. You can also access the Ringtones and Alerts directly from the Sounds tab within the settings app.

Poll: How’s your battery life with iOS 5?

It seems like every time Apple introduces a new version of iOS, some people get slightly better battery life, most people stay about the same, and a ridiculous number flood our contacts, comments, and forums saying it’s their worst battery life EVER.

Vote in the poll up top and then give us the great — or gory — details in the comments below. If you are having problems, let us know how you’ve tried to trouble shoot: clean install (not from backup), remove and re-add push accounts, delete and re-download notification and location happy apps, turn off Ping (always a good idea), turn of location Reminders, restart a lot — what’s worked and what hasn’t?

How's your battery life under iOS 5?

    iPhone 4S Teardown In Progress

iFixit is in the middle of an iPhone 4S teardown and is constantly updating the page with new information as they strip the newest iPhone down to its constituent parts. While it’s a little early to get all of the details out of them, a few interesting points have popped up. The battery is better than that of the iPhone 4, but because of a different connection you can’t put the newer battery in the older model for longer life — sorry hackers.

When they finish this teardown, we’ll have a better idea of the full stats on the device, including RAM confirmation (though we’re pretty sure it’s 512MB) and what all the different parts that go into it are.

iPhone 4S Sold Out On All Carriers

According to Bloomberg, just a day before the iPhone 4S is set to debut, it has sold out on all the carriers offering pre-orders. All of their websites indicate the phone is out of stock, with Verizon and Sprint stating plainly they don’t have any, and AT&T has a four-week ship time to get one.

Fear not, if you don’t already have one there are other options. You can grab one in person at the Apple Store (may require lining up), at the stores of any of those carriers, through Walmart, Sam’s Club, Best Buy and probably one or two other places I’m forgetting.

For what was widely regarded as a disappointing iPhone upgrade, this shows that people are still extremely interested in this upgrade — especially if you skipped the iPhone 4 when it debuted.

So… how’s iOS 5 working for you? Apple opened the gates of update yesterday and unleashed a ton of new software so did you manage to download what you needed? (I updated my iPad 2, I’m still waiting on my iPhone 4…)

For those of you who’ve updated successfully to iOS 5, do you like it? Is it what you expected? Are the new features implemented well for you? Anything surprisingly good or surprisingly bad? Any iOS 5 bugs driving you nuts, or hidden gems that just made your day?

Burnout Crash Promises Vehicular Destruction These Holidays

The Burnout series of videogames are a wonderful bunch of racing games that give you points for carnage, racking up huge scores for smashing the everliving hell out of anything on the track. The most recent entry was the downloadable Burnout Crash, which we’re now hearing is heading to iOS these holidays.

Unfortunately, we don’t know anything more than that.

However, if my experiences with the other Burnout games are any indication, it’ll provide countless hours of maniacal cackling as your opponents cars explode into fiery balls of chaos and death.

Burnout Crash appears to be a major graphical departure from previous entries, going top down rather than in-car, assumedly because it’s less resource intensive.

Apple Reportedly Planning Streaming Movies Over iCloud

According to the WSJ, Apple is in the long and tedious process of getting the rights to stream movies over iCloud.

Apple Inc. is negotiating with Hollywood studios for deals that would let people who buy movies from the iTunes Store watch streaming versions of those movies on Apple devices such as iPads or iPhones without manually transferring them, according to people familiar with the matter.

The way the WSJ is reporting this, it sounds like the studios are pushing for these streaming initiatives, but thinking back to every other time Apple has had to organize rights for their services it has been a long and drawn out process to get them.

While they’re at it, can they put an end to time-limited digital downloads of purchased movies? A copy of Inception on Blu-Ray I picked up was meant to come with a digital download, which had expired before I even bought the damn thing…

Porting Siri to other iOS devices requires piracy, likely won’t be a reality

iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd has gone on the record stating a port of Siri to other iOS devices outside of the new iPhone 4S will require piracy, and likely won’t ever see the light of day as a consequence.

Anyone hoping for a “port” of Siri from iPhone4S: pending a very low-level A5 exploit, it likely can’t be done without piracy

(only way to extract Siri files from iPhone4S filesystem without pirating is to have the main FS keys, requiring low-level exploit)

Essentially, the only way to get Siri working on other iOS devices would be to take the required files from an iPhone 4S and transfer them onto the other device manually. It’s also possible that Apple may flag such devices since Siri talks to Apple’s servers to complete certain tasks.

On the other hand, piracy in the jailbreak community has been running rampant lately, so it’s also possible we could see this come from other, less ethical jailbreak developers.

Daily Tip: How to erase all personal data from your old iPhone before upgrading to the iPhone 4S

Interested in selling or giving away your old iPhone to pick up a nice new iPhone 4S but need to know how to make sure you’ve erased all your personal information from the device first? Luckily Apple makes it easy to securely wipe all your data. We’ll show you how after the break.

Although we highly suggest performing a full firmware restore and setting up your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as “new”, if you’re not near your computer you can still get the job done:

If you have a passcode setup, you’ll have to verify your credentials before being asked one last time that you’re positively sure you want to dispose of everything on your iPhone. The process can also take some time depending on how much music, video, apps, etc. you had stored on the iPhone, as Apple is writing over the data multiple times for security’s sake.

It’s also important to note that if you have a jailbroken iPhone, you’ll want to go through the full iTunes restore process due to permissions issues preventing the data from being fully erased from the device.

Once it’s done you’re good to give away or sell your old iPhone without having to worry about anyone getting into something you may have left behind. Let us know if you have any questions in the comments below!

Apple close to bringing movie streaming to iCloud?

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Apple is preparing to deliver movies via its just released iCloud service. According to the report, representatives from Apple have been in meetings with various studios to finalize deals.

Representatives of the iPhone and iPad maker have been meeting with studios to finalize deals that would allow consumers to buy movies through iTunes and access them on any Apple device, according to knowledgeable people who requested anonymity because the discussions are private. The service is expected to launch in late 2011 or early 2012.

This news doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, we heard a while back that Apple was looking to secure agreements with various movie studios. The plans which are getting nearer to fruition would allow a user to stream any movies they buy from iTunes to any iCloud enabled device.

Sprint and Verizon iPhone 4S To Be SIM Unlocked [u]

Since both Sprint and Verizon use CDMA networks, they don’t need that handy little MicroSIM slot that comes in the side of the iPhone, and it appears they’re going to open it up for international travelers to install foreign SIMs. According to MacWorld:

But there’s a new wrinkle that potentially makes the international-roaming experience better on Sprint and Verizon iPhones than it is on AT&T. Sprint plans to sell the iPhone 4S with its micro-SIM slot unlocked; Verizon’s will be initially locked, but if you’ve been a customer in good standing for 60 days, you can call Verizon and ask for an “international unlock.” (A Verizon spokesperson told me that this is Verizon’s standard policy for all world phones—it’s just the first time it’s manifested itself on an iPhone.)

That’s right, both Sprint and Verizon will be offering the iPhone 4S unlocked. For free.

AT&T, you better pick this up, or you’re going to have an extremely pissed off set of international travelers on your hands. The inability to just throw in a new SIM when arriving in a new country has been a major problem with previous iPhone iterations, and jailbreak unlocking is often complicated and precarious. I’m really hoping AT&T sees the positive response to this and also unlocks their version.

UPDATE: Sprint is denying this. Curiouser and curiouser.
