Daily tip: How to manually transfer data from your old iPhone to your new iPhone 4S

Daily tip: How to manually transfer data from your old iPhone to your new iPhone 4S

Switching from an old iPhone to the new iPhone 4S and wondering how you can transfer your data over? Luckily, iTunes makes this process almost painless. After your initial transfer to your new device, iOS 5 and iCloud will make the process even easier from here on out. But if for some reason you still need to transfer your data manually, we’ve got you covered!

If you’ve ever had to swap an iPhone out at an Apple store, you’re probably already familiar with this process. If not, follow these easy steps to copy data to your new phone. This process will save all your contacts, camera roll photos, apps, and settings into an iTunes backup for you.

After you’ve done a manual transfer you’ll have the option to use iCloud backups in the future. If you have any questions or have issues, check out our TiPb Forums for all the help you could ever need!

Daily Tips range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. Apple, Siri and the customer insight play

Apple, Siri and the customer insight play

Siri isn’t a voice control system. Nobody uses those, and Apple wants something everybody will use. First, they value user experience, second they value differentiation from other platforms, and third, certain business models are predicated on having very large user bases. That’s where the revenue streams become complex and the profit becomes really interesting.

Let’s say iPhone 4S has Siri and it looks cool and it makes people want to buy it. Apple, being well managed and having good hardware margins, makes money on the sale. Then people start using Siri and feeding it incredible amounts of demographic and behavioral data. Apple, being smart, can use all that demographic and behavioral data to develop a high level of customer insight, allowing them to make better and better selling products and services.

But there’s more. If Apple chooses to adopt a Google-style business model, they can aggregate and anonymize that data and sell it to advertisers and marketers. That turns the customers into products, and opens the door to an entirely new customer base.

Google already pays Apple to be the default search engine on iOS. The App Store, however, reduced the amount of searches being conducted on mobile. (As Apple has proudly announced during their events — unlike desktop, people aren’t spending their time in search, they’re spending it in apps.) That started to cut out Google but didn’t cut in Apple.

Siri cuts in Apple. Queries issued through Siri go to Apple’s servers. Apple gets the data on who’s issuing them, when, where, and in relation to what else. Without building a search engine of their own, Apple steals away what makes search so valuable.

But there’s yet more. Because Apple becomes the intermediary — the walled gate — between their customers and the internet, traditional internet services lose all visibility into their customers. They don’t see iOS users running queries, they see Apple running queries on behalf of iOS users. Tons and tons of them. That loss of visibility means internet services lose the very customer insight Apple has gained — they lose the ability to make better and better selling products, and to monetize individual users.

Apple has already done this with the App Store and iOS subscriptions. App Store developers often don’t know who their end users are, and traditional print media was livid when Apple made the sharing of demographic data opt-in for end users. Sure, account logins can mitigate this somewhat but often make for a worse user experience and there’s no guarantee end users will make accounts for every app that wants them. (Just like not everyone sends in the warranty card for that printer they just bought at Best Buy or Staples.)

With Siri, that extends Apple’s intermediation to internet services as well. So, increasingly, if companies want to get customer insight back, it will become easier to just go to Apple. And buy it. To the best of my knowledge Apple doesn’t offer that now, but it’s a business model they could choose to explore. It turns the partners and suppliers into customers, and again opens the door to yet another entirely new business.

But there’s even more. With Apple as intermediary, they don’t just get the customer insight for one service, they get them for every service that goes through their system. That includes both complementary and competing services. If visibility into your own users is valuable, how valuable is visibility into your competitors’ users, and their demographics and behavior?

To make it more tangible, Coke has no idea who buys a can of their tasty beverage at the local QuickyMart. But QuickyMart does, with ever-increasing granularity. And if they choose to, and they know how to derive proper customer insight from it, they can use it to better stock their shelves and increase their profits. And they can sell it to advertisers who want to reach their customers. And they can sell it to Coke, who wants to better understand the end consumer to improve their own profitability. And they can sell it to Doritos who wants to be bought alongside Coke, and they can sell it to Pepsi who wants those customers to buy their tasty beverage instead.

Apple may never choose to get into this type of business, or like iAds they may not do it well, or they may get into some or all of it in a very different way. Customer insight, however, opens the door to an increasingly important and valuable revenue source, and Siri opens the door to customer insight.

iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Surpass One Million In First 24 Hours

Apple today confirmed that sales of the iPhone 4S had surpassed one million in the first 24 hours. The single previous day record of 600,000 was held by the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4S

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”

One million in 24 hours. Pretty amazing. I can only imagine the numbers will see when Apple releases the iPhone 5.

AT&T Sells 200,000 iPhone 4S Pre-orders In First 12 Hours

Apple stated that the iPhone 4S hit a whopping 1 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours. AT&T says that the first 12 of those saw them sell 200,000 units, the most successful iPhone launch they’ve ever had. Their brief statement simply said:

AT&T has seen extraordinary demand for iPhone 4S with more than 200,000 preorders in the first 12 hours alone, the most successful iPhone launch we’ve ever had. It’s obvious customers like AT&T’s 4G network, which is the only one that lets their iPhone download twice as fast and talk and surf simultaneously.

If we assume that that doesn’t include any sales on Apple, Sprint or Verizon, you can get a feel for how one million pre-orders were hit so quickly.

Sprint hasn’t given any official numbers, but “we are very, very pleased with the initial first day of iPhone 4S pre-orders,” Sprint Vice President of Product Development Fared Adib said in a statement. “Today’s sales and the overall customer experience greatly exceeded our expectations.”

iPhone 4S Hands-on Video Shows Speed Boost, Siri

Someone on the Chinese site AppVV managed to grab an iPhone 4S a few days before they hit the streets, and put together this little demo video showing off some of the functionality. One of the things they did was put it through Sunspider and Browsermark to test its speed:

Early Sunspider marks show a total score of 2222.1ms and a BrowserMark score of 89567. For comparison, it appears that the BrowserMark score for an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 is 44856, so the new iPhone 4S benches twice as fast in the browser.

You also get a bit of a look at Siri and its options, including the ability to have Siri kick in as soon as you put the phone up to your ear, a feature called Raise to Speak.

Found Footage: Banned iPhone 4S Promo

The same guys behind the banned iPhone 4, iPhone antenna, white iPhone 4, and iPad 2 comedy videos have come together to mark and mock Apple’s latest invention: the iPhone 4S. Hardly a better way to start a monday than with some booze humor.

Sony Pics Up Rights To Steve Jobs Biopic

With speed so fast it’s bordering on offensive, Sony has reportedly scooped up the rights to a Steve Jobs biopic. The rights are based on the upcoming biography of the man by Walter Isaacson. The report over at Deadline thinks it a good match, saying “the studio seems a good fit for the book, having boiled business books into compelling dramas with both the Oscar-nominated The Social Network and Moneyball. ”

Jobs has been portrayed in movies before, perhaps most famously in The Pirates of Silicon Valley, which was made before Apple’s huge resurgence, but after Jobs’ return to the company.

I’ll admit that The Social Network was a great movie, and I’d love to see a Jobs biopic that manages to show him with both his greatness and his myriad of flaws, but snapping up the rights this soon after his death seems morbid and predatory.

Official Cause Of Steve Jobs Death Released

href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-10/jobs-died-at-home-of-respiratory-arrest-tied-to-cancer-1-.html">Bloomberg has reported the official cause and time of Steve Jobs’ death:

Steve Jobs died at home in Palo Alto, California, of respiratory arrest caused by a pancreatic tumor at about 3 p.m. on Oct. 5, according to his death certificate. His occupation was listed as “entrepreneur” in the “high tech” business.

While the respiratory arrest was the ultimate cause, the underlying reason was a “metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor” from his pancreatic cancer.

This means at least that Jobs was alive during the iPhone 4S announcement, and while obviously not well enough to take the stage or attend the show, at least he would have been able to watch.

Facebook for iPad available now! [Updated]

The waiting is over, folks, as Facebook has let us know that Facebook for iPad is set to hit the App Store today! It appears as though it will be available as an update to the Facebook for iPhone app.

In addition to an interface designed for the iPad, some of the app’s great advantages over the web is that you can chat and play Facebook games.

I complained nearly a year ago about Facebook not having an iPad app, and it’s great to see them finally release one. I sure as heck can’t wait to get my hands on it!

UPDATE: It’s out! Go get it!

iOS 5 Contains Reference To New AppleTV

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/appletv3a59to5gurm.png">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24183" title="appletv3a59to5gurm" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/appletv3a59to5gurm.png" alt="" width="536" height="240" />9to5 Mac have href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/07/apple-outs-more-powerful-apple-tv-dual-core-a5-in-ios-5-file-system">been code diving in the internals of iOS 5, and have found a reference to an as yet unreleased AppleTV device. The current generation of AppleTV is based on a heavily modified version of iOS, and has an internal name of AppleTV2,1. AppleTV3,1 is mentioned in these strings, and represents an as yet unannounced piece of hardware.

Generally, if the update is after the comma in the name, it’s a minor one (so if it were AppleTV2,1 to AppleTV2,2). Since this is a jump to version 3,1, we could see some major changes here. If the AppleTV managed to get the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S’ A5 processor, you could expect some pretty beefy graphics output hopefully full 1080p, and maybe we’d finally see an app store for the device.

ODM PH-1 precision pH Meter for iPhone

The ODM PH-1 accessory combined with its pH Meter companion app brings pH measurement to the iPhone and iPod touch. The accessory plugs into the iPhone and has a reader attached for taking the pH and temperature readings. The companion app records the readings, as well as the location, time, and date of the readings.

The could be a fabulous little kit for scientist working in the field for environmental testing, or even for commercial pool maintenance. Another great use would be in the science labs of schools – the labs could have a handful of the accessories and students could take turns using their iPhones and iPod touch’s to take readings for their projects.

Check out the video above, where Rene interviews the developer and creator of the ODM PH-1 precision pH Meter and receives a demo.

The PH-1 meter combines the iPhone’s GPS and communication abilities with a precision instrument to bring pH measurement to a new level. Not only does the system record the pH values, but the time, date and location of the measurement are also logged.

Head on over to odm Technology’s website for ordering information. The companion app, pH Meter, is available on the iPhone for free.

iPhone 4S hands-on video shows fast benchmarks and “Raise to Speak” for Siri

A video purportedly showing the iPhone 4S in action reveals a new “Raise to Speak” feature for Siri, letting users bring the iPhone up to their ear instead of holding down the home button in order to active the feature. The video also reveals benchmarks showing the iPhone 4S to be about twice as powerful as the iPhone 4.

Early Sunspider marks show a total score of 2222.1ms and a BrowserMark score of 89567. For comparison, it appears that the BrowserMark score for an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 is44856, so the new iPhone 4S benches twice as fast in the browser.

Additional features found in the video show more options for Siri, including language selection settings, voice feedback, user information and the ability to turn off the service system-wide.

These benchmarks are in-line with Apple’s suggestion of the iPhone 4S being roughly twice as powerful as the iPhone 4 with its new A5 SoC powering the device.

Apple commemorating Steve Jobs on October 19

Apple commemorating Steve Jobs on October 19

MacGenerations received a copy of an email purportedly from Apple CEO Tim Cook, announcing the date and time for Apple’s celebration of their late co-founder, Steve Jobs‘ life.

Team,

Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week. But I’ve found some comfort in the extraordinary number of tributes and condolences from people all over the world who were touched by Steve and his genius. And I’ve found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve.

Although many of our hearts are still heavy, we are planning a celebration of his life for Apple employees to take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place. The celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 10am in the outdoor amphitheater on the Infinite Loop campus. We’ll have more details on AppleWeb closer to the date, including arrangements for employees outside of Cupertino.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Tim

Jobs passed away last Wednesday at the age of 56. Since then, both Apple in Cupertino and Apple Stores around the world have been covered in flowers, post it notes, and memorabilia in a show of gratitude, inspiration, and sympathy.

5 Reasons Why You Should Buy the iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S will be released on Friday, October 14th. It’s not the iPhone 5, which at this point is nothing more than a rainbow colored unicorn. There is only one new iOS device in town and that’s the iPhone 4S. Should you buy one? It depends, but here are 5 reasons why you should considering buying the iPhone 4S, despite it not being the mythical iPhone 5.

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iPhone-4S-three.png">src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/iPhone-4S-three.png" alt="buy iPhone 4S" title="iPhone-4S-three" width="630" height="545" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-24172" />/> id="more-24170">

There are plenty more reasons to buy the new iPhone. Heck, one of which is because it’s a new iPhone. With Apple announcing pre-orders of the iPhone 4S reaching 1 million within the first 24 hours, it seems clear that a good number of people are finding good reason to purchase the iPhone 4S. How about you? Why are you buying or not buying the iPhone 4S?

iPhone 4S pre-orders are the best ever, over 1 million in 24 hours

Should you get an iPhone 4S?

Apple has released a statement claiming that the iPhone 4S has become the most popular iPhone based on pre-order sales figures. Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone 4S on Friday October 7th and received a phenomenal one million orders within the first 24 hours. These figures outstrip the iPhone 4 pre-order figures by over 400,000 units.

These sales figures are astounding, considering the rather damp reception that the iPhone 4S appeared to receive. Maybe people are beginning to realize that the iPhone 4S is still a major upgrade despite it still having the same form factor as the iPhone 4?

If you are still on the fence, have a look at our 2011 iPhone buyers guide or jump into our iPhone 4S forums for help.

Netflix sobers up, cancels Qwikster spin-offs

Netflix has announced that, as the cold harsh light of morning — and likely customer sentiment analysis — hit them, they’re reversing their previous decision to spin off their DVD mailer business into Qwikster. This means iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV Netflix in the US can retain a single site for all their account mangeament, ratings and reviews. Re-un-de-unified CEO, Reed Hastings:

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

That or this has all been some elaborate plan by Hastings to be named CEO of HP

Untethered iOS 5 jailbreak coming soon?

Potentially good news for those of you looking to update to iOS 5 this week but don’t want to lose your jailbreak. Stefan Esser, also known as i0n1c if you follow him on twitter, has revealed that he believes an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 may already be in the works.

We don’t know at this stage if this will include the iPad 2, which has proven difficult to Jailbreak, or the soon to be released iPhone 4S which has the same Apple A5 processor. There is already a tethered jailbreak available for the iOS 5 Gold Master but that does not include the iPad 2. Also the problem with a tethered jailbreak is the inconvenience caused each time your device needs a reboot; it has to be connected to a computer or it will not restart.

Let’s hope that we won’t have to wait too long for an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, it’s good to know that things seem to be “covered”.

Untethered jailbreak coming soon for iOS 5 according to i0n1c

Good news for those of you looking to update to iOS 5 this week but don’t want to lose your jailbreak. Stefan Esser or i0n1c, if you follow him on twitter, has revealed that he believes that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is already covered.

As far as I know iOS 5 untether is covered by other people already. Guess who :P

Now we don’t know at this stage if this will include the iPad 2 or the soon to be released iPhone 4S; we will have to wait and see. There is already a tethered jailbreak available for the iOS 5 Gold Master but that does not include the iPad 2.
