It’s tough to explain Siri in under 30 seconds, but Apple does a good job here.

Steve Jobs considered Android “grand theft” of iPhone ideas
According to the latest excerpt from Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Steve Jobs, HTC’s introduction of what Apple considered iPhone-like innovations made Jobs “livid” and were equated with “grand theft”.
“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” Jobs said. “I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”
Jobs reportedly told then Google CEO and former Apple board member, Eric Schmidt:
“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”
The issue is still unresolved and Apple has filed high profile patent infringement suits against a variety of Android ODM’s, including HTC, Motorola, and Samsung.
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson is available for pre-order now, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we got more fiery – and marketable — excerpts as the release draws near.

Apple airs first iPhone 4S commercial, focuses on Siri
Apple has aired their first iPhone 4S commercial and it’s all about Siri, their new artificially intelligent voice control system. This comes as no surprise, as a significant number of iPhone 4 commercials focused on the magic of FaceTime, and Siri is this year’s big “wow” demo. (Perhaps the new camera will be next?)
We’ll swap in Apple’s official video when they post it, in the mean time…

MobileMount promises to be the strongest iPhone and iPad mount out there
A new Kickstarter project has started up for MobileMount, a nice looking suction cup mount for the iPhone, iPad and other smartphones and tablets. The kickstand mount is produced by JR Sanches of J & M Company and promises to deliver the best mount your money can buy.
The MobileMount is a universal mount/kickstand for virtually any hand held device with a flat surface, like smartphones and tablets. Comprised of two twist-to-lock suction cups and one ball joint, this device’s unique design allows for superior suction and durability.
The twist-to-lock suction cups are said to be the strongest out there and will secure your devices “for weeks”, rather than days or hours from competing mounts. The universal design means you can use it on your iPhone or iPad, or any other flat-surfaced device. They also came up with a smart ball and joint system that allows for free horizontal and vertical rotation, making it a perfect setup for using your iPhone on your car dashboard or windshield as a GPS unit.
Pledges for the MobileMount start at just a buck and go all the way up to $700, but a pledge of just $25 will secure you a black MobileMount and 4 vinyl circles (for use with devices that have a matte surface) for delivery in January of next year. They’re goal is $20,000, but they’ve already passed $10K so it doesn’t look like this will have any trouble getting to market.
I’ll personally be pledging $50 to get a couple of these bad boys — one for my iPad 2 at the office and one for a windshield mount for my iPhone 4 in the car.
Check out the full video after the break!

Daily Tip: How to add phonetic spelling to a contact for Siri
Wondering how to get Siri to better understand and pronounce your contact’s names? Sometimes adding phonetic spelling will solve the problem. A good example of this is my name. Siri is pronouncing it as A-lie, as in the cake is a lie. Here’s how to set up a phonetic spelling to a name.
Has Siri had issues pronouncing any names for you? Did adding a phonetic spelling fix the issue?

Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots Is A Thing
Not since Angry Birds: Rio has there been such a shameless attempt to marry two completely unrelated titles. So now there’s a Fruit Ninja game where you play as the cat with the sword. Well, technically there are two, one for iPhone, one for iPad.
It appears the only real change is the introduction of a new “Bandito” mode, with totally new puzzles and the introduction of — and no, I’m not making this up — “the most-requested addition in Fruit Ninja history – the tomato!”
Here’s the full description if that sounds appealing to you.

Pimp My iPhone 4S Please!
The iPhone 4S is actually one of the most expensive phones the market today but for some it can actually get far more expensive. As thousands, if not millions, queued outside Apple stores all over the country to get their hands on the “regular” iPhone 4S, millionaires and billionaires were getting set to place their orders with a different agent: Stuart Hughes. He has already laid out his plans to unveil pimped-out versions of the iPhone, dubbed the “Billionaire Toys” edition. As the name helpfully suggests you will have to be making some serious money to be able to afford these versions of the iPhone.
The phones will come in two very distinct varieties: Billionaire Toys Gold Edition and the Billionaire Toys Platinum edition. Both models will be strictly restricted to 1000 units each (it’s not like most of could afford it anyway) and will feature some seriously pimped 32GB iPhone 4S handsets, which will cost $3,795 per unit.
The Billionaire Gold iPhone 4S will come coated with 24ct gold and feature around 500 crystals embedded within the handset frame. In addition, another 53 hand set stones will be used to create the Apple logo. The pimped out iPhone will also come with some seriously pimped headphones that will be encrusted with crystals.
The Billionaire Platinum iPhone 4S will feature a crystal encrusted frame and logo embedded within a platinum coated body.
With these enhancements, users can turn the most popular smart phone on the market to the most expensive smart phone on the market. Thus, creating the ultimate status symbol for anyone who likes to mix high-end technology with extreme luxury. Another advantage of such an extreme makeover is that you can at-least ensures that the value of such a phone will remain high even after it has been surpassed by more advanced versions. However, anyone actually willing to spend so much on a pimped out version of the iPhone is probably not too concerned about the after-sales value.
AT&T Activates 1 Million iPhone 4S
AT&T has announced the most successful phone launch of all time on their carrier, the iPhone 4S has blown past all records, and they’ve already activated 1 million of the device. Not only that, but overall iPhones are now the majority of their smartphone network, with Apple devices making up 56% of activations. That’s right, there are more iPhones on AT&T than any other smartphone.
Much like Apple, AT&T suffered for the pushed-back iPhone 4S launch, seeing lower sales than hoped for in the quarter previous. Overall, AT&T activated 2.7 million iPhones last quarter, compared to 3.6 the quarter before.
The Weather Channel For iPad Gets A Total Overhaul
The Weather Channel’s iPad app is my go to weather predictor. Of all the ones I’ve tried, it’s by far the most accurate — but the only problem is that it has a hideous and clunky interface. Well, not anymore. The Weather Channel for iPad has received a total graphical overhaul with version 3.0, making it far better looking.
Here’s what’s new:
• Gorgeous animated weather backgrounds for your local conditions (iPad 2 devices)
• Beautiful HD weather photo backgrounds
• Interactive spinning globe with the world’s weather
• Full screen, customizable weather maps
• Latest news coverage, expert tweets, and user photos
• iOS 5 compatible
Early reviews indicate that while the update is graphically superior, it does have some troubles running on the original iPad, which hopefully they’ll fix soon.
Full press release follows:
The Weather Channel Launches All-New Interactive 3D App for iPad
With presenting launch sponsor Westin Hotels & Resorts, redesigned app to provide
global and hyper-local map views, enhanced tools for forecasts, news and social
ATLANTA (October 20, 2011) – The Weather Channel® (TWC), together with presenting launch sponsor Westin Hotels & Resorts, is proud to reveal an all-new redesign of its popular The Weather Channel for iPad App, offering consumers a stunning new perspective to discover, interact and share the weather and news happening at their doorstep and around the world. The revamped, easy-to-use interface goes beyond forecasts to tell the weather story and its impact on consumers’ daily lives through immersive visualization, an interactive 3D globe with spinning map view, an integrated news and social tab, weather-triggered background images and more.
“In the age of the interactive social experience, we know weather information needs to be visual, accurate and at your fingertips. Part of the success of our iPad app has been our ability to listen to consumer feedback for ideas on how to improve, and we have learned a lot since it first launched with the original iPad,” said Cameron Clayton, executive vice president of digital product at The Weather Channel Companies. “This was an opportunity to create a better product that’s all about the consumer and gives them the opportunity to truly explore and share.”
The Weather Channel for iPad App brings together the best of TWC on mobile with the best of TWC on television to give consumers customized weather information at the tap of a finger for up to 10 saved locations. New features include:
The new app offers functionality from the original app, such as an extensive index of advanced interactive weather maps with local points of interest and customizable animated weather layers such as radar, clouds, UV index, rainfall, snowfall and more. Consumers can still depend on severe weather alerts with Push notifications and GPS “Find me” availability for weather conditions.
Westin Hotels & Resorts is the presenting sponsor of the new The Weather Channel for iPad App, running a rich media campaign that allows consumers to “Wipe Away Your Weather.” The innovative campaign targets consumers based on location and current weather conditions. For example, consumers in a snowy location will see their screen fill up with snow and can then “wipe away” that snow to reveal a warmer, tropical Westin resort destination, interact with the property, learn about other Westin Hotels & Resorts destinations, and share the experience via Facebook, Twitter and email. The campaign, created with creative agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty, digital agency Razorfish and rich media vendor Celtra, will run on multiple TWC platforms.
iSuppli Teardown Says iPhone 4S Costs $188
iSuppli have stripped an iPhone 4S to pieces, reports AllThingsD, and they’ve found that the bill of parts for the iPhone 4S is the same as that of the iPhone 4 — $188 for the entry level version. The Qualcomm chips account for $14 or $15 of that, $15 for the A5 chip, and $17.60 for the camera chip.
If the $188 figure is accurate, that means that Apple is bringing in just $11 for the 16GB version, though this bumps up to $154 for the 64GB edition.
Keep in mind that the price difference there has to pay for R&D, Apple Employees, shipping, assembly and everything else that goes into a phone apart from the raw materials. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple was losing a little on the baseline iPhone, and then making it back once you start trying to feed your crippling Angry Birds addiction.
How to easily take high quality self-portraits with iPhone and iOS 5
Trying to figure out how to take a high quality self-portrait with the iPhone, and the low-quality front-facing VGA camera just isn’t cutting it? One of the new features of iOS 5 is the ability to trigger the iPhone’s rear facing camera with the Volume Up button, and that means it’s easier than ever to get the perfect self-portrait. Here’s how:
If there’s a mirror near by, you can even see what the camera is seeing on the screen and adjust accordingly.
There you go! Now you’re all set to take the perfect self-portrait! You can say goodbye to the grainy, front-facing VGA camera and only use the rear facing camera.
Now go snap some pics and update your Facebook and Twitter profile pics!
Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs biography, to appear on 60 Minutes
Walter Isaacson, the author of the upcoming authorized biography of Steve Jobs, will be sitting down with 60 Minutes on Sunday for an interview going over the new book. In a preview, he reveals:
“I’ve asked [Jobs why he didn't get an operation then] and he said, ‘I didn’t want my body to be opened…I didn’t want to be violated in that way,’” Isaacson recalls. So he waited nine months, while his wife and others urged him to do it, before getting the operation, reveals Isaacson. Asked by [60 Minutes correspondent Steve] Kroft how such an intelligent man could make such a seemingly stupid decision, Isaacson replies, “I think that he kind of felt that if you ignore something, if you don’t want something to exist, you can have magical thinking…we talked about this a lot,” he tells Kroft. “He wanted to talk about it, how he regretted it….I think he felt he should have been operated on sooner.”
The Steve Jobs is scheduled to go on sale Monday, October 24th after the date was moved up following the announcement that Steve Jobs had passed away.

iTunes Match has 3G data limits?
A TiPb reader informed us that he was able to stream a 50 min. long concert this morning via iTunes Match, but now he’s being told to connect to Wi-Fi to play anything that long.
Both iTunes and the App Store have a 20MB limit on 3G downloads, however iTunes lets you stream content on 3G that go over 20MB, like podcasts. While there’s been some debate on whether iTunes Match would ultimately be downloading, streaming, or some hybrid of both, it appears it could fall under similar or the same 3G streaming restrictions regardless.
It’s still early days for iTunes Match and settings might be getting flipped back and forth a bit, so we’ll wait for things to settle down before we do anything other than inch towards conclusions.
Anyone else hitting 3G walls when using iTunes Match?

Upcoming Avengers movie uses video shot on iPhone
Seamus McGarvey, cinematographer of the upcoming Joss Whedon-helmed, Marvel Comics hero-filled Avengers movie, revealed in an interview with IFTN that some of the shots in the film were taken with an iPhone.
The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film
Check out the trailer and let us know if you can figure out which Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow, or Hulk shots assembled into the Avengers movie are the iPhone ones.

Warning: Don’t leave your iPhone unattended or risk pranks, data theft
Thanks to the quick Camera access and power of Siri as a virtual assistant, iOS 5 and iPhone 4S are more convenient than ever — but they also leave you open to everything from pranks to data theft. We’ve talked about this extensively on the iPhone Live podcast but it’s worth repeating here.
Double clicking the Home button and tapping the Camera icon bypasses a Passcode Lock and instantly lets you take pictures. You can’t access anything else, but if you leave your iPhone unattended, a friend or passerby can easily prank you by taking an inappropriate picture (from innocuous “funny faces” to to full on “junk attacks” — don’t ask.) If you have Photo Stream enabled, that prank picture can quickly propagate to all your other iOS devices, your PC, and your Apple TV, and the only way to remove it is to delete the entire stream.
You can’t currently disable the fast Camera access. You can disable Photo Stream by going to Settings, iCloud, and toggling Photo Stream to Off.
Holding down the Home button to activate Siri also bypasses the Passcode Lock, and while Siri is prohibited from doing things like deleting contacts or performing web searches without the lock code being entered, Siri can still call numbers, delete alarms, and perform other tasks unencumbered. If someone knows a contact’s name, they can get access to their email address(es), phone number(s), etc. Even if they don’t know a contact’s name, because relationships can be set, they can simple ask for “mom” or “boss” and get the data that way.
Friends and strangers alike can also prank you by telling Siri to address you by some funny or rude name.
You can disable Siri’s Passcode bypass. Go to Settings, General, Passcode Lock and flip the Siri toggle to Off.
Convenience and security are always at opposite ends of any feature list. Each individual has to decide for themselves how much convenience they want and how much security they’re willing to give up for it. (Some people choose to not even use a Passcode Lock, after all.)
Disabling Siri’s Passcode bypass reduces its speed and ease of use but increases its security. You can’t just hold a button and start talking to have Siri take an email, for example, while you’re driving. You have to enter the unlock code first, and perhaps each time depending on your settings.
Unfortunately, Camera access and Photo Stream need to wait for Apple to provide an easy off-toggle, and a way to delete individual pictures from the stream. Disabling Photo Stream contains any pranks, but means you lose the backup and multi-device replication of the feature.
In the meantime, the best practice is, of course, to never leave your iPhone unattended, especially around people you don’t know — or people you can’t trust not to prank you.
iZON room monitor catches thieving neighbour in the act [video]
When a woman suspected that someone was entering her condo and stealing her prescription medicine, she went and bought an iZON, set it all up using her iPhone and then let it do its magic. Sure enough it captured her neighbor entering her condo and taking her drugs. She called the police and the iZON video was used to arrest the perpetrator.
We told you a few months back about the iZON wireless connected, app controlled video camera accessory. What was special about this particular video camera was its ability to be setup with an iOS device, activated via sound or movement and it could record directly to YouTube.
Take a look at the CBS 12 news report video below. It is a great story and just proves that you do not need to be a geek to setup and use technology when Apple is involved!

AT&T announces 1 million iPhone 4S activations
AT&T announced today that they’ve activated 1 million iPhone 4S on their network as of Tuesday, October 18, the most successful launch in their history. Ralph de la Vega, President and CEO of AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets thinks it’s part of his network’s GSM/HSPA+ advantage.
It’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for iPhone 4S and they want it to run on a network that lets them download twice as fast as competitors’
AT&T also singles out simultaneous voice and 3G data as a differentiator, something Sprint and Verizon can’t do with their CDMA/EV-DO rev-A technology.

The Early Edition for iPad is the digital newspaper and RSS reader that launched alongside the iPad. Over the course of 12 months, Glasshouse Apps has redesigned it from the ground up and just released The Early Edition 2 – and we’re gifting away 5 copies!
I wasn’t a fan of the original Early Edition, but I am loving The Early Edition 2! The UI is gorgeous and the app runs nice and smooth on my iPad 2. The Early Edition 2 is a beautiful, up-to-the-minute newspaper that puts you in the editorial seat. RSS feeds are the basis for content and now it can be used either as a standalone app or in sync with a Google Reader account.

RBS field trials for iOS devices: is the fall of BlackBerry neigh?
The reason BlackBerry has still managed to stand apart from the crowd was because it claimed to provide business users with a range of services that put a lot of emphasis on security and flexibility. This has always been BlackBerry’s strength and the reason other smartphone platforms have found it difficult to penetrate corporate boardrooms. Now, however, that relationship has suffered a double blow. Last week, faith in BlackBerry’s reliability took a hit when its servers crashed and prevented millions of users from using emails or sending message for almost four days. Now, reports have emerged that a variety of large financial corporations are testing iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, including the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Morgan Stanley and Citigroup.
The reason BlackBerry was so popular with corporate clients was the fact that it provided very secure communication: all the communication is stored at RIM’s own servers and key services like emails are encrypted. Other services included the ability to remotely wipe data from a BlackBerry in the case of theft. Now iOS devices have also introduced a variety of security features that include encrypted email and data transfers. These changes have been enough to convince chiefs at these major banks to test the compatibility of iOS devices when handling highly-sensitive information. If a change does happen this could mean a new market for iOS devices and more importantly, a major loss for BlackBerry.
Now don’t get ready to dump your BlackBerry just yet. These firms are still testing iOS devices and they are currently being run as read-only, meaning that they are not being used to save information. iOs devices are already the most popular on the market today so it is no surprise that firms are finally beginning to pay attention to its potential use in the work environment. Unlike the BlackBerry, the amazing functions of devices like the iPad and the iPhone, combined with the large plethora of apps available at the iTunes store, allow Apple to easily outclass BlackBerry.
The iPhone 4S has an improved GPS system with GLONASS support
The iPhone 4S has an enhanced GPS system with support for GLONASS according to Apple’s own technical specification page. The question is what is GLANOSS and what does it actually mean to us in the real world? GLONASS according to its Wikipedia page stands for Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema or Global Navigation Satellite System.
Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema or Global Navigation Satellite System, is a radio-based satellite navigation system operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. It is an alternative and complement to the United States’ Global Positioning System (GPS), the Chinese Compass navigation system and the planned Galileo positioning system of the European Union.
GLONASS has around 24 satellites worldwide and when these work alongside the standard 31 GPS satellites, your GPS accuracy and fix speed can be greatly enhanced. We are not sure if Apple is using the systems in tandem to provide this extra accuracy and speed. It may just be that in order to sell the iPhone 4S in Russia it had to be made available. Either way, it is something you can brag to your friends about!
