Apple releases iTunes 10.5.1, launches iTunes Match in the US [Updated]

Apple releases iTunes 10.5.1, launches iTunes Match in the US

Apple has released iTunes 10.5.1 and along with it, their paid music locker service in the U.S., iTunes Match. Coming after several extended betas, and past the previously announced October time frame, iTunes Match costs 24.99 a year and allows users to scan their iTunes libraries and either gain access to matching, 256kbps tracks from the iTunes Catalog, or upload their own, off-catalog tracks for access from any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or iTunes client on Mac or Windows.

Introducing iTunes Match. Store your entire music library in iCloud, including music you’ve imported from CDs, and enjoy your collection anywhere, anytime, on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, computer, or Apple TV.

So if you’ve been eagerly waiting to get your music to the cloud, hit software update or download directly via the link below. Then come back here and tell us what you think. Did Apple get it right?

iOS 5.0.1 seems to do the trick

What could have been the greatest disaster for the iPhone 4S, at-least in terms of public relations, has been averted it seems, with the release of the iOS 5.0.1. The culprit was a series of bugs that drained away the battery of any iPhone that featured Apple’s revolutionary iOS 5 update. Apple did not get too specific with the bugs but the consensus is that there was something wrong with some of the synchronisation features, which ultimately caused the iPhone battery to exhaust itself.

The new update, which is available now, is 790 MB in size, takes around 10 minutes to download. By all accounts, the new update seems to do the trick and users have reported that the effects of the change have been very positive. In addition to fixing the power-related bugs, the update also contains quite a few security fixes that is further elaborated in the Apple website. The update, which surfaced relatively quickly following the initial complaints of poor battery life mean that Apple has managed to get the job done rather quickly, a welcome move, considering how it has responded to some issues in the past.

The update itself will mean that now users will no longer have to shut down some of the new features that initially came with iOS 5, which has taken the iPhone to a completely new level. It also means that Apple is not going to have another PR disaster on its hands as it did last time around with the “antennagate” that came up with the iPhone 4. So far, the overall approval of the iPhone 4S has been immensely positive despite the fact that analysts and consumers alike were initially disappointed with Apple for not releasing an “iPhone 5” with a radical overhaul. Instead, the current version has won over critics with enhanced hardware and groundbreaking technology such as the Siri voice command system.

Apple Launches iTunes Match

After a number of beta releases, Apple today launched iTunes Match to the public. The $24.99 a year service, allows users to store music in iCloud, including tracks not purchased from iTunes. Your entire collection of music is then made available in iCloud.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/itunes_match.png" class="lightbox" >class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25218" title="itunes_match" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/itunes_match.png" alt="iTunes Match" width="557" height="350" />

Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, most of your music is probably already in iCloud. All you have to upload is what iTunes can’t match. Which is much faster than starting from scratch. Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it on any of your devices. Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.

Also released today is iTunes 10.5.1, which is required for iTunes Match.

Video: The Pug that can’t stand the iPhone

Some animals just have no taste and this Pug is definitely one of them. Picture the scene; he is happily lying on his owner’s bed watching TV when a commercial comes on. The commercial is for the latest and greatest iPhone 4S but this Pug is having none of it. It sends him into a barking and growling frenzy, stamping his feet, gnashing his teeth, it really is a site to behold. As soon as the ad is finished, he settles down again and continues watching the TV.

Now as we all know, the iPhone 4S is the best iPhone ever, this little Pug must either hate the music on the ad or just hates ads all together. I am sure it has nothing to do with the iPhone 4S!

Improvements that we ought to see in the iPhone 5 (part 2)

The iPhone 4S, as we saw earlier is now probably the best smartphone on the market today, but as amazing as this phone is, there is plenty of room for improvement. In this post, we look at yet another list of things that should be improved on the iPhone 4S. One thing everyone should remember, is that creating an amazing product is no easy task, so the ultimate product will be depend heavily on factors such as technology, marketing, pricing, and of course, the overall Apple ecosystem that plays a strong part on the development of the iPhone.

The following are some of the additional improvements that should really be featured in the next generation iPhone.

An enhanced Siri: Apple has managed to take voice command to the next level while its rivals have cleverly pushed it aside for the past few months. However, the system still has its flaws including the fact that it cannot properly understand sophisticated words and the integration with other features is still rather immature. A refinement of this technology would be a great plus point for Apple.

Near Field Communication (NFC):  Call Google what you want, but the fact that it is trying hard to introduce a mobile payment system with NFC technology may very well be the biggest revolution in mobile technology for the years to come. It could very well herald a huge change in our shopping habits and have wider ramifications. It could reduce the role of credit cards and paper money; not to mention, it will give Google huge amount of influence if the service is widely adopted. The iPhone must either fall in line or Apple should offer something similar to the Google Wallet, it has the means and the necessary reach, so any attempt would be successful in some sort.

3D Display: Yet another to the testament of the innovative capabilities of its rivals is the adoption of 3D technology, which the iPhone is yet to feature. While this feature may not be in Apple’s most anticipated list, there is no doubt that if the iPhone is going to play a larger role in entertainment and gaming, then it must introduce 3D technology sooner or later.
