Top 5 best soccer apps for iPhone and iPad
The soccer — or football to those of us on the proper side of the pond — season is starting again, so what better time to look at the best soccer apps for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. With these apps you can get all the latest transfer news, big stories, results, match highlights and even live games.

Samsung defends against Apple iPad lawsuit by claiming 2001: A Space Odyssey as prior art
No, you didn’t read the headline wrong — Samsung is claiming their Galaxy Tab 10.1 couldn’t be a copy of Apple’s iPad because… it was copying the earlier movie prop from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Well, okay, not copying — more like maintaining the design elements were commonplace in pop culture, especially science fiction. One of the ways to invalidate a patent is to prove prior art — that someone had the idea before the company who was awarded the patent.
Since everyone from HAL’s buddy Dave to the Enterprise D’s Captain Jean Luc Picard used tablet-like devices, Samsung seems to be asking, how could Apple possibly have been granted the design patent?
Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents stops short of calling it either genius or a stunt.
It would be amazing if the court agreed with Samsung that this constitutes prior art for that particular iPad-related design patent. Whether or not Samsung will succeed, the mere fact that they proffer this kind of evidence is remarkable and will be exciting for many fans of movies in general — and of that movie in particular — to find out about.
Hopefully Samsung hasn’t seen Dick Tracy or Apple’s nano watch might be next!
New Amazon iPhone app for college students
As students get ready to head to college, retailers are already beginning to scramble to get their attention. There will be plenty of gadgets, textbooks, clothes and other important college essentials that must be bought in order to stay one-step ahead of the competition. The only challenge is to give students the best possible information at anytime of the day, cutting down on the time that must be otherwise spent searching and comparing deals. After all, college students are not millionaires (not most, anyway) so everyone is looking for a good deal.
One of the most popular retailers, Amazon, has definitely grasped this fact and has already released a new app called Amazon Student to help attract attention to its products and deals. The app allows college students to instantly check the prices of their textbooks and other items, make lists of necessary items that must be bought and sell any used material such as textbooks, games and movies. Furthermore, the app also allows users to post their gadgets for trade-in, which is a great option for users who want to upgrade their equipment before heading back to the new semester.
Like the main app, the Amazon Student also features a barcode scanner that lets users check out the latest prices and deals on a variety of items including books, music, DVDs and other gadgets. The items can be bought immediately and the company will be providing students with a free 2-day shipping on all purchases for 6 months. This is in addition to all the benefits that are currently featured with Amazon Prime.
The trade-in feature is deserves special attention because not only does it allow students to easily upgrade their material in a low-cost manner. It also, means you will not end up with extra clutter in the new semester. Students will not be getting cash in exchange for trade-ins but will get Amazon gift certificates. Better still, shipping for trade-ins will be free.
Three accessories that will be perfect for the new semester at college
Students all over the country will be heading in droves to college but to get the best of the iPhone in this new and challenging environment, you need the right kind of accessories.
iTunesU
iTunesU is a giant database consisting of lectures, slideshows, books, PDFs, books, films, exhibits, audio books and other material from the best universities in the world including Oxford, Harvard, MIT and Stanford. The app makes it easy to find the relevant material in the most user-friendly manner possible. Moreover, the app also features a “Beyond Campus” section that allows students to access information from resources such as the MoMA, New York Public Library, Public Radio International and the PBS stations. The rising availability of such resources has done wonders to encourage and motivate students. In one study, almost 24% of students said they often use videos and podcasts and 12% indicated that they use iTunes as study material. The app is available on the iTunes store for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
zBoost Metro
Wireless technology is now definitely mainstream and universities all over have begun embracing the technology because it allows the students to access the internet from any part of the campus and does not require many of the expensive renovations that are necessary to install landlines. However, the problem with wireless signals is that sometimes the overall power of the signal maybe uneven in one part of the campus or dorm. One of the best solutions to this problem is provided by zBoost METRO iPhone signal booster than can enhance the indoor signal for multiple users up to 1500 sq ft and does not require any additional installation. One option would be to get your roommates to pool-in and buy the device or you can ask your university to purchase the system and install it in your area.
Collegiate Cases and Covers
Technology such as the iPhone and iPad can work wonders for students who are trying to get ahead but this is also very expensive. A standard list of gadgets can easily cost a few thousand dollars. That is why it is extra important to spend some money on reliable protection. For this purpose, it would be best to equip your iPhone and iPad with high-end collegiate cases and protectors. You can stop by i-Fanatic.com, which has an extensive range of superb protection accessories.
WSJ: Sprint iPhone 5 Coming This October
What’s crazier than an east coast earthquake? The Sprint iPhone 5, coming in October. This news is reportedly coming out in the Wall Street Journal later today, but SAI has scooped them on their own story. If the report is true, the iPhone 5 on Sprint will release in mid-October.
Update: Here’s the href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903327904576526690675657466.html">original (subscription required), albeit late story from the WSJ. The cite “sources familiar with the matter”.

Sonos Promises Lion Update
If you own a Sonos System, then hopefully you didn’t jump at the chance to update to Lion. A technical issue has caused the desktop app to cease working with Mac OS 10.7. We received some good news today from the Sonos team. They have been working with Apple and believe they have isolated the problem. They are testing the fix in a private beta release and expect to have a release within the next two weeks. As a stop gap, you can use the very excellent href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonos-controller-for-iphone/id293523031?mt=8">Sonos Controller app for iPhone and iPad, available in the App Store.

Is the iPhone 4 and 5 Coming to Sprint in October?
Adding the third-largest cellphone company with 52 million customers sounds like a great way for Apple to increase sales. A lot of people are locked into contracts, family plans or corporate agreements with Sprint, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want an iPhone. People who can’t afford an iPhone or dislike contracts probably don’t own one for these reasons. Not everyone prefers all the bells and whistles of a smartphone.
I’m not saying an affordable iPhone isn’t a great idea. I’m just saying a Sprint iPhone seems like a better onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.gamblingiq.com');" target="_blank" title="bet" href="http://www.gamblingiq.com">bet, and would even increase the chances of a cheaper iPhone selling well. The math is simple: More carriers means more potential customers and more iPhone sales.
According to the Wall Street Journal, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint will all be carrying the iPhone 5 in October. Sprint is also supposed to be getting its own version of the iPhone 4 as well (possibly the rumored href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/is-apple-releasing-an-8gb-iphone-4-in-a-few-weeks">8GB iPhone 4?). The details are slim, and nothing has been confirmed, but a Sprint iPhone in October doesn’t sound as crazy as some iPhone rumors we’ve been hearing this month.

Developer Spotlight: Boyd Timothy of Appigo
TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Boyd Timothy of Appigo.
What’s your name? Boyd Timothy
What’s your company’s name? Appigo
Where are you located? About 45 minutes South of Salt Lake City in Orem, Utah
What’s your website address? http://www.appigo.com/
What’s your Twitter name? @appigo
What apps do you make? Todo iPhone [App Store link], Todo iPad [App Store link] and Todo for Mac [App Store link], Corkulous [App Store link], Notebook [App Store link], AccuFuel [App Store link]
What apps, other than your own, are currently among your favorites? Dropbox [App Store link], Pandora [App Store link], iKlondike [App Store link],
How long have you been a developer? Professionally, since 1997.
How long have you been an iOS developer? Since early 2008 when the original iPhone SDK was released.
Do you develop for any other platform in addition to iOS? If so, which one(s)? Prior to Appigo I worked on the Linux Desktop Team at Novell with my focus being on .NET apps using Mono. At Appigo our primary focus is on Mac OS X and iOS although we do have a number of supporting online services we’ve written and also a utility on Windows to sync tasks into Outlook.
What primary computer setup do you use for your iOS development? 15″ MacBook Pro, 8GB RAM, with 27″ Apple LED Cinema Display
What iOS device(s) do you personally use most often? iPhone, by far … it’s with me all the time. My iPad is extremely handy during outdoor music gigs since it stays put in the wind and has a very readable screen.
What mobile devices, other than iOS, do you currently use? None
What’s your favorite thing about developing for iOS? Ideas come to life quickly we get immediate feedback from customers.
What’s your least favorite thing about developing for iOS? The release process … not having full control of releasing apps as soon as they are ready. Fortunately Apple now lets us choose the release date once it’s approved, so that helps with timing releases more appropriately (as opposed to 6 PM on a Friday, which happened frequently in the past).
What feature would you most like Apple to add to the iOS 5 SDK? Voice dictation as an OS feature for all apps that accept text input.
What feature would you most like Apple to add to the App Store? An easy way for developers to respond to specific customer reviews/feedback.
If we were to eavesdrop on you while you were coding, what curse word would we hear you use the most? When I go to debug a problem I think I’ve fixed and it doesn’t work, more times than not, you’d hear me angrily say, “Pieces of crap for breakfast!” (“borrowed” from the movie Happy Gilmore)
What do you do when you’re not coding iOS apps? Play bluegrass music (guitar, mandolin, banjo, etc.), fly fishing, yard work, and hanging out with my family.
What should we look for from you next? We believe it’s important to provide people with different task synchronization options. File-based task sync is not only possible, it’s very stable and working well.
Thanks Boyd!
Sprint to get iPhone 5 this October?
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint Nextel will get iPhone 5 mid-October, the same time TiPb reported AT&T and Verizon would be getting Apple’s next generation handset.
Landing the iPhone is a big win for Sprint, whose results have suffered without being able to sell the iconic device. This February, Verizon Wireless began selling the iPhone 4, while AT&T has relied on versions of the Apple device to drive sales since 2007.
In all likelihood, this will be the same CDMA/GSM dual-mode world phone destind for Verizon’s network. While the WSJ seems shocked and surprised at iPhone 5 coming in October, TiPb readers have known for a while now that Apple has been considering October 7, possibly October 14 as launch dates.
However, with Yukari Iwatani Kane and her excellent track-record contributing to their article, it’s excellent confirmation and Sprint customers should have a lot to look forward to this fall.
Anyone going to line up for Sprint this time instead of AT&T or Verizon?

Daily Tip: How to adjust icon labels and transparency with Alphacon [jailbreak]
Wondering how to easily and quickly adjust the transparency of your icons or turn off labels? If you [Jailbreak](http://www.tipb.com/jailbreak/], you may want to check out Alphacon. Other apps like Winterboard allow you to do this but if you want something much more simple, Alphacon is it.
Once installed it will appear in your settings. You can choose to turn transparency on and off and further customize what icons you want the settings to apply to (home screen, dock, folders, etc). So if you’d like for your dock icons to not be transparent you can just tick off the transparency option for the dock. Same deal with icon labels. You can choose to turn them all off or just some. I personally still like to see my folder labels so I leave those on but turn off icon labels for everything else.
Alphacon is currently available in Cydia for free.

iPhone 5 replacement parts cropping up online
Online parts supplier TVC Mall claims to have some iPhone 5 replacement parts in stock. If these are the real deal, it gives us a bit more information on the internals of the iPhone 5. Besides the rear camera, TVC has a few other iPhone 5 replacement parts listed – an iPhone 5 replacement battery, audio jack flex cable (pictured above), and the prox sensor flex.
Compared to the iPhone 4, these parts seem like they may be legit. It also wouldn’t be the first time suppliers get their hands on parts before the official release of a device. We also see about 20 fakes for every real leak as well. After repairing several iPhones over the past 2 years, I’d say these parts could maybe be the real deal.
I find myself kind of hoping they’re not as I really wanted to see a dual LED flash on the iPhone 5. Sigh. Here’s to hoping these are maybe just a really good Photoshop mockup of some iPhone 4 parts.

Low Price 8GB iPhone 4 In The Works?
href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/23/us-apple-iphone-idUSTRE77M1P220110823?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+reuters%2FtopNews+%28News+%2F+US+%2F+Top+News%29">Reuters is reporting that in addition to launching a new handset over the next couple of months, Apple is also planning to release a low cost 8GB iPhone 4 as an entry level model. Their information comes from Asian suppliers, who are in the process of making the 8GB drives for the iPhone 4.
They’re also pointing at a launch in the near future, pegging the release date as “within weeks”.
Reuters’ sources also say the next official iPhone will be an iPhone 4S, with a larger screen but otherwise not significantly changed design from the iPhone 4, and it will launch by the end of September.

First Gen AppleTV Repurposed Into Stunning Nixie Clock
href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/apple_nixi3.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23243" title="apple_nixi3" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/apple_nixi3.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="500" />Want an awesome idea of what to do with an old first generation AppleTV? How about morphing it into one of the coolest looking clocks you’ve ever seen! Designed Daniel Kirth href="www.kurth.lu/nixie">has transformed an AppleTV into a Nixie Clock. href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixie_tube">Nixies where the vacuum predecessor to the digital watch, capable of showing any digit in their awesome body.
href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/apple_nixi2.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23242" title="apple_nixi2" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/apple_nixi2.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="600" />It sounds like it was quite an undertaking:
Kurth has reused every structural element, integrated a nixie controller board, tube holders and replaced the top acrylic plate with a new CNC routed PVC plate where the Nixie Z560M tubes come out.
The heavy duty tissue cable doubles as power cord and wall mount string.
Similar to the Nixie Concrete Clock, the rearranged tubes allow the user to enjoy the playful interaction between the six tubes.
All electronic components in the fully functioning clock are assembled by hand.
Kurth will provide the CNC shapes (for the tube holders and cover plate) for free on request.
Anyone feel like making me one? I don’t know one end of the soldering iron from the other, but man do I want one of these things! I assume that the aTV was pretty much stripped down to its core and most of the processing power unused. You can’t ignore that it’s gorgeous, though.

Square Card Case Makes Paying By Phone Even Easier
href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/square-1.png">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-23250" title="square-1" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/square-1.png" alt="" width="208" height="215" />
We love href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/tag/square/">Square, the awesome little dongle that plugs into your iPhone or iPad, and lets you pay by card at food trucks, farmers markets, hot dog stands and craft fairs. The most recent change to their modus operandi is the introduction of href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/square-card-case/id455018546?mt=8">Square Card Case for heavy users. It remembers the places you’ve paid at using Square, and if the merchants have opted into a free service, they become a “card” in your “case”. You can then pay at these places without swiping your physical credit card, instead just having the payment go through automatically — great if you’re a regular.
I’m hoping it’ll allow you to beam in your order before you get there, so your gelato is waiting and paid for as soon as you rock through the door.
Square Card Case also allows you to accept payments, which raises questions about the usefulness of href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/square/id335393788?mt=8">Square’s original app — but the old version still has a few tricks up its sleeves. A recent update has improved transaction speed, overhauled the tipping interface, no longer requires a signature for sales under $25, and works on the iPad where Card Case does not.

Poll: What’s the next iOS device you plan on buying?
What’s the next iOS device you plan on buying? While we probably won’t be getting 5 new iOS devices this fall we still might get a few more than usual, and by the time the next yearly product cycle goes by, who knows what else Apple will have added to the mix?
I’m guessing a lot of the TiPb Nation is waiting for the iPhone 5, but is anyone going to skip it and hold out for the iPhone 6? Maybe you hope that Apple discounts the existing iPhone 4 like usual, or puts out a budget iPhone nano instead?
The iPad 3 sounds like it’s not coming this fall after all, but are you planning to get it shows up this spring? Or does a new iPod touch 5 fit your needs better?
What if Apple finally makes a real iOS powered iPod nano, one that works amazingly well as a watch and shows all your notifications? Anyone else besides me really want one? And if they finally let Apple TV go a full 1080p, would that be on your shopping list?
Let me know what you plan on buying in the poll below, and give me the reasons why — or better yet, why not! — in the comments below!
Apple set to release an 8GB iPhone 4 alongside the iPhone 5?
According to a report from Reuters this morning, Apple has instructed its Asian manufacturers to begin production of a lower priced iPhone 4 with just 8GB of on-board storage. The information comes from “People with knowledge of the matter”. The flash drives for the 8GB iPhone 4 will be manufactured by a Korean company according to the same sources but no company name was revealed.
To be clear, this doesn’t sound like the iPhone nano/budget iPhone TiPb previously heard Apple was working on, nor is it the greatest of revelations when you consider previous Apple release patterns — When the iPhone 3GS was launched, the then-current iPhone 3G was offered as a cheaper entry level iPhone with 8GB of storage. Again when the iPhone 4 was launched last year, the iPhone 3GS was offered with 8GB of storage at a much cheaper price.
Having said that, an iPhone 4 with 8GB of storage at a very competitive price would still be a very compelling device for many.

Dual mode GSM/CDMA iPhone 5 spotted in app logs?
Right now [iPhone 5](http, like any dark matter, can only be observed by its effects on others, including the log traces it leaves and the cases manufacturers leak. TechCrunch, citing an undisclosed developer who’s iOS app was recently accessed by a never-before-seen dual-mode GSM/CDMA world phone, points to the former.
The logs show that the app has been briefly tested by a handful of people using what is almost certainly an iPhone 5, evidently running iOS 5, sporting two distinct sets of mobile network codes (MNC) / mobile country codes (MCC). Those codes can be used to uniquely identify mobile carriers.
Sure enough, some registrations for the app – which the developer also asked not to be named – were logged from a new Apple device, using the MNC/MCC codes from both Verizon and AT&T.
Apple has had theoretical support for a world phone since switching to Qualcomm chips, but previous iPhone 4 models haven’t enabled the feature. Turning it on would likely be bad news for those hoping iPhone 5 would sport LTE (the faster and closest to a “real” next generation wireless technology). HSPA+, a not-quite-as-fast but far more widespread “4G” protocol looks like a safer bet, though it would leave Verizon behind on the same EVDO Rev A speed the current iPhone supports. (See TiPb’s guide to wireless network terminology for more on what this all means.)
In other words, Verizon could advertise a world phone but AT&T could say they have a 4G iPhone.
Is Apple Releasing an 8GB iPhone 4 in a Few Weeks?
On Monday, I quickly href="http://www.iphonealley.com/news/aging-iphones-still-selling-according-to-npd-group-report">touched on how the aging iPhone 3GS is still selling well and how its holding its spot as one of the top selling phones years after its release. There seems to be a new Android device released everyday, yet the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS seems to be outselling them all.
Yesterday’s onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.npd.com/press/releases/press_110822a.html');" target="_blank" href="http://www.npd.com/press/releases/press_110822a.html">NPD report revealed that Android and iOS increased their market share in quarter 2 of 2011. It also revealed that one in five new phones sold in Q2 were on a prepaid plan. This confirms what some analysts and tech blogs have been saying for the last few months. Apple doesn’t need to rush their next-generation device to hold their grip on the smartphone market, and releasing that rumored mid-ranged iPhone might be a great idea.
onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.splatf.com/2011/08/npd-iphone-2q11/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.splatf.com/2011/08/npd-iphone-2q11/">Splatf pointed out that the introduction of the Verizon iPhone, delay of the white iPhone, and numerous iPhone 3GS price cuts helped Apple increased their market share in Q2 of this year. So while the introduction of a new affordable iPhone might not seem exciting to Apple fans and tech bloggers, it could help Apple boost sales in emerging markets.
On Tuesday, Reuters announced that Apple has begun manufacturing a lower-priced version on the iPhone 4. An 8-gigabyte flash drive is purportedly being developed by a Koeran company for the revamped device. Either Reuters is late to the rumor game, or this could be the dead iPhone 4S rising from the rumor grave.
This rumor may seem kind of old, but at least it’s consistent. Unlike other tech blogs who have been contradicting themselves over and over, and trading one iPhone rumor for another with the drop of a hat. The unnamed source said that the 8GB iPhone 4 is expected to launch within weeks. Which doesn’t really tie into the new rumored October 7 release date for the iPhone 5. Maybe Apple plans to launch the new iPhone 4 version quietly, and make a spectacle out of the iPhone 5 later?
