According to KoreaTimes, Apple has started testing displays from LG and Samsung for a new, HD iPad. These sources say that Apple is testing the LCDs at a lab in China, and are looking for a QXGA resolution 2048×1536 screen, with 4:3 aspect ratio.
These sources don’t mention when or how we’ll see the screens, just that Apple is intent on using LCDs.
2048×1536 would be substantially beyond current HD (1920×1080), and would require some major under the hood firepower in order to power such a high resolution screen.
If correct, the pixel density would probably be high enough for Apple to label it as having an iPad retina display.
