Avengers Partially Filmed on an iPhone 4

The Avengers, a new Marvel film releasing in May, gave the iPhone 4 room to demonstrate its smartphone camera prowess. However, not quite in the way believed in early reports. Originally, director Seamus McGarvey was quoted as saying that “the beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer!”

Though many reported that a few scenes were in fact filmed on an iPhone 4 for effect and even speculated which they may be (the shot of Thor in the trailer, anybody?), McGarvey clarified that he was misquoted to onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/avengers-dp-scenes-filmed-iphone-252083');" target="_blank" href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/avengers-dp-scenes-filmed-iphone-252083">The Hollywood Reporter.

What McGarvey claims to have specifically meant was “how up and coming film makers have access to a whole range of new technologies which expand our options as filmmakers. I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5D Mark II were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie. Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true.”

There you have it. As interesting of a prospect it may be for 720p video from an iPhone 4 to be blown-up to 1080p, cinema format, and even 10,000×7,000 IMAX format, that is not going to happen presumptuously. However, the camera does in fact make a brief appearance as a character in the film uses an iPhone to record and the actual video feed from it is displayed.

With a budget of over $150 million, it seems unlikely that the detail in sets and costumes would be compromised for smartphone experimentation. The 8-megapixel, 1080p camera in the iPhone 4S would fare much better, but still… they have access to IMAX cameras.

Perhaps McGarvey really did use an iPhone 4 very briefly but had reason to retract his original statement. Nonetheless, check out the trailer for what will undoubtedly be summer’s biggest blockbuster:
