While Apple has yet to specifically address the “S” in the iPhone 4S’s name, there are a number of monikers that could be attributed simply based off of feature knowledge. Whether that be “speed” as in the iPhone 3GS’s case or the more distinct choice of “Siri,” there is one label that is undoubtedly the perfect choice. Sources have told us that a secret name is being used internally at Apple.
iPhone 4S is now known as iPhone 4S[teve] (for Steve) among some Apple employees. It seems very fitting, considering how it is the first product to launch after Steve’s death.
Perhaps the “S” was added for multifarious effect, encompassing the new features of the 4S but being specifically chosen since it subtly commemorates Steve Jobs’s direction provided to the iPhone line as well as the company as a whole. Steve knew his days were numbered, sharing that information with a select few. It is possible that that few wanted to go the route of the 4S branding since they knew that it could be for Steve.
Steve’s DNA is within the iPhone 4S and will continue to be in every new iteration. Regardless of whether it was originally intended, I am sure we can all agree there could not be a better name than iPhone 4Steve.
