The World Mourns The Passing Of Steve Jobs

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/313293_10150314390975423_51014195422_8270013_1738012367_n.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-24111" title="313293_10150314390975423_51014195422_8270013_1738012367_n" src="http://www.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/313293_10150314390975423_51014195422_8270013_1738012367_n.jpg" alt="" width="229" height="232" />We’re still in shock about yesterday’s news of Jobs’ passing. We all knew he was sick but his demise comes as a surprise even so. I’m not going to write an obituary — there are others out there who are far better authors than I who have already done so. I’m not going to spin this into a crass grab for pageviews either, as easy as it would be to push out dozens of little pieces on this tragedy in order to get hits.

The man was a visionary. A bit of a dictator by all accounts, but nonetheless one of the greatest people the planet has ever seen for actually understanding how people interact with technology, and how to make that interaction better.

Here’s what the world’s saying.

href="http://www.cultofmac.com/121227/bloomberg-businessweek-announces-steve-jobs-tribute-issue/">Bloomberg will produce a special memorial issue.

href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/10/05/president-obama-passing-steve-jobs-he-changed-way-each-us-sees-world">Here’s what President Obama said:

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity.  By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun.  And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last.  Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

Finally, I’d like to close with what Bill Gates had to say. Long time competitor and rival to Jobs, the pair seemed to reconcile in recent years, and Gates’ dedication to helping the world is universally admired. These two titans defined personal computing for decades, and href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-what-bill-gates-had-to-say-about-the-passing-of-steve-jobs-2011-10">here are his words.

I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work./> Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives./> The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.
