One of the saddest things about major iOS updates is the apps that get left behind. href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/stanza/id284956128?mt=8" target="_blank">Stanza, an e-reading app that’s now owned by Amazon, seemed like it was going to end up that way. It wouldn’t run under iOS 5, and Amazon has been completely silent on the issue in the weeks that have followed.

Stanza fans have now had their patience rewarded. The app updated this afternoon for the first time since February, bringing iOS 5 compatibility. From our testing, this has successfully fixed the crashes that have recently plagued the app, restoring it to full usability on iOS 5.
Sadly, this update will be Stanza’s swan song. Amazon has confirmed to href="http://www.macworld.com/article/163524/2011/11/amazon_updates_sunsets_stanza_app.html" target="_blank">Macworld that this will be the app’s final update. The company has no plans to support it going forward. Amazon is instead focusing its efforts on maintaining its Kindle app. That’s probably to be expected, but must still be a big disappointment for the folks from Lexcycle and Stanza fans alike.
Stanza was one of the first popular e-reading apps available on iOS, and it still offers more customization options and supports more file types than its major competitors. Those users who haven’t already moved on to a new app should be happy to have it back. If you’re one of them, however, you might want to consider moving your e-books over to href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/ibooks/id364709193?mt=8" target="_blank">iBooks or another app — there’s no telling how much longer Stanza will work, but at least it works again for now.
