Every couple of months, the rumor that Apple is prepping to make a television set pops up again. Gene Munster is a huge fan of this in particular, and yet again he’s taken to posting an investor note saying as much. Normally, we ignore these rumors, partly because there’s no evidence, partly because it’s Munster’s hobby, and partly because they never come to fruition, but this time there’s something more in the air.
One of the facts that came out of today’s Steve Jobs bios (available on Kindle and iBooks now) is that just before his death, the Apple CEO apparently had big plans for an AppleTV that was an actual HDTV.
“He very much wanted to do for television sets what he had done for computers, music players, and phones: make them simple and elegant,” Isaacson wrote.
Isaacson continued: “‘I’d like to create an integrated television set that is completely easy to use,’ he told me. ‘It would be seamlessly synced with all of your devices and with iCloud.’ No longer would users have to fiddle with complex remotes for DVD players and cable channels. ‘It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine. I finally cracked it.’”
It’s that “finally cracked it” comment that has lead to a flurry of discussion and rumor that this may have been Jobs’ last project. I wouldn’t count on it until we see some solid evidence, but this is more than we’ve ever had before.
