iPhone Air, Mockup of Possible Next-Generation iPhone

With Apple’s annual press conference just around the bend, the iPhone 5 rumors are in full-swing. You’re probably sick of them, as am I, but this mockup (below) by Italian designers, onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ciccaresedesign.com/?page_id=260');" target="_blank" href="http://www.ciccaresedesign.com/?page_id=260"> Ciccarese Design is slick enough to compensate for the disappointment by yet another rumor entering the rumor mill. id="more-21052">

The supposed next-generation iPhone, depicted in both black and white versions, sports a teardrop design (thicker at top, progressively thinner as you go down), an edge-to-edge display and an aluminum body design. It’s certainly one of the best mockups the iOS community has been faced with since the launch of the iPhone.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind the thin body and edge to edge display, but the teardrop design couldn’t really be of much help other than providing a spin off of the current design of the iPhone and of course helping the overall presentation of the phone. Yeah it’ll be fine holding it in portrait orientation, but what about landscape? Wouldn’t the different thicknesses get on your nerves? Everything else does match what the iPhone 5 is supposed to look like, though, come this September, so we’ll just have to wait and see what Apple is waiting to reveal to us.

Though it’s one of the nicer mockups we’ve seen in recent times, I wouldn’t count on the design making it to Apple’s press conference this September. Various, probable, iPhone 5 cases have been spotted recently, not featuring specifications to accommodate iPhone Air’s teardrop design.

So, the final impression expectations land on your heads. Would you purchase a device like so?

Future iPads, iPhones to be built by Robots

Future iPads, iPhones to be built by Robots

Xinhuanet reports that future iPads and iPhones might just be built by robots, that is if manufacturing giant Foxconn goes ahead with plans to replace workers with up to 1 million mechs:

[Foxconn] currently has 10,000 robots and the number will be increased to 300,000 next year and 1 million in three years, according to [Foxconn founder and chairman, Terry Gou].

Gou announced the robotics initiative during a company dance party, which presumably they’ll have less of in the future. Unless, of course, they’re replacing workers with dancing robots.

EA: Fastest growing gaming console is iPad

EA: Fastest growing gaming console is iPad

Speaking with IndustryGamers, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello puts the previous Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony-led console market into post-iPad perspective:

Consoles used to be 80% of the industry as recently as 2000. Consoles today are 40% of the game industry, so what do we really have?

We have a new hardware platform and we’re putting out software every 90 days. Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn’t exist 18 months ago.

So consoles are down by half, and iPad has come out of basically nowhere to become the hottest thing in gaming? Hard core gamers would argue you can’t play Call of Duty or World Of Warcraft on an iPad, just like hard core geeks would argue you can’t run Xcode/Visual Studio and otherwise use an iPad as a “real computer”.

That’s true. It just turns out the hard core base is much smaller than the mainstream, and Apple — and Angry Birds and a host of other, casual titles — is democratizing the gaming platform just as much as the computer.

And iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring, where you can play your iPad games on the big screen via Apple TV, hasn’t even launched yet.

Introducing the Soundfreaq speaker dock

The iPad can fulfill many roles but entertainment is one of the most important features. Naturally, there are two very important features that need to be taken care of: video and audio. While the video is stunning enough on the iPad, the sound quality is best enhanced through a speaker dock. In essence, you can transform your humble iPad into a fully-fledged speaker system for the entire household. In the hunt for the perfect speaker dock, fans might be impressed with the upcoming Soundfreaq Sound Step Recharge (SFQ-02RB), which comes with a Bluetooth wireless system.

In addition to the iPad, Soundfreaq can also work with a number of other mobile devices including smartphones (Apple and Android), mobile phones, Tablet PCs (Apple and Andorid) and MacBooks as long as they have a Bluetooth feature. The system works from almost 10 meters away, so this gives you the ultimate level of flexibility and freedom. You can set it up at any part of the house or you can even control the system if your iPad is not in the same room.

The system will include a 2.1 speaker configuration including a sub-woofer and the famed UQ3 spatial sound enhancement that was developed by Soundfreaq. Going wireless doesn’t mean you will run out of battery power anytime soon because the system can provide around six hours of full-blown audio experience. It will also come with a USB charger, so you do not need any extra devices or wires.

The Sound Step Recharge by Soundfreaq will be available on Amazon from the 1st of August for $159.95. If you are in the UK, you can get your hands on the system via HMV UK for £149.99. Overall the Soundfreaq system is one of the most elegant and powerful devices on the market right now. The fact that it offers a very high quality wireless audio experience and it can be used with a variety of devices makes this one of the most attractive iPad accessories thus far.

New iPad accessories launched by Logitech

Logitech, known for its popular accessories for electronic devices, has launched a fresh range of accessories of the iPad that is guaranteed to enhance your user experience.

Logitech Keyboard Case

Logitech has joined forces with another cool firm called ZAGG to create a Logitech Keyboard case that features an elegant aluminum cover and comes loaded with a military-grade high-density padding. The protective case does its job by wrapping itself gently around the iPad 2 in order to cover the screen and the sides of the device. Like most other recent accessories, the keyboard case also uses Bluetooth connectivity to pair the keyboard without long-waiting times or any hassle. The keyboard itself has a very user-friendly layout and the performance is amazing. Amongst the cool features that have been packed into it is a recess behind the keyboard that allows users to change the iPad 2 into portrait or landscape mode. This reduces the time necessary associated with setting the device up. The keyboard charged via a USB cable. You can get your hands on this device for $99.99

Logitech Tablet Keyboard

The Logitech Tablet Keyboard is designed with mobility on mind and combined a keyboard and a stand combination. This also allows for portrait or landscape mode. The quality of the device is also very high and in terms of elegance, it is stunning. This too, pairs over the Bluetooth wireless and is effective within 30 feet in optimal conditions. This device is available for $69.00.

Both devices are excellent for those looking for a good keyboard accessory for their iPad 2. Choosing the best one really depends on how you are going to use it. If you use the keyboard regularly then maybe the keyboard case is the best. If you only use the keyboard at your office or home, then the Tablet Keyboard option might be better. Either way, both cases are superb by themselves.

Florida school scrapping textbooks and rolling out iPads to its students

Lake Minneola High School has adopted the iPad as its future learning device of choice. When students return next month they will have access to a shiny new iPad for school time and home use. Lake Minneola will be the first public school in Central Florida to buy Apples iconic tablet for all of its students.

“Students learn differently now because of the technology,” said Kathy Halbig, innovative learning manager for the Lake school district who is overseeing the project. “Students are used to having multiple sources and being able to have more social collaboration in their learning process rather than just doing it sitting quietly and reading.” “Rather than have a child have five tools on his or her desk they’ve got one tool that will function as the textbook, the Slate, the Internet access, note taker, calendar,” she said.

The school has invested around $700,000 buying up 1750 iPads for its students. Teachers are already planning lessons using the iPad as the focal point complete with selected educational apps. The school believes that it will save them money in the long term.

The iPads will be locked down to prevent students installing apps that are not appropriate to the school learning process. Each iPad will also be supplied with a rugged case to protect it from everyday school life.

App for That: How to send videos to the cloud

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, George asks:

Next Month, I’m going to a YouTube gathering in London called Summer In The City. As its a YouTube gathering there is going to be alot of video taking. However, I’m only going to take my 16GB iPhone (and clothes and stuff), so was wondering if there was an app that would let me store the videos when I ran out of room, as I can’t put it on a computer or anything.

To see what we found for George, follow along after the break!

Dropbox [Free - iTunes link] is the perfect solution for George! Dropbox is an iPhone and iPad apps that allows users to upload videos, as well as other files, that can later be accessed from a computer or other iOS device.

A free dropbox account provides 2 GB of space (with incentives to increase that). If George is concerned about space, he can subscribe to the 50 GB or 100 GB plan. They are priced at $10/mo and $20/mo, respectively, but he can cancel his subscription after returning from his trip and transferring the videos to his computer.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for George? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Send us an email to iosapps@tipb.com and let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to find you just the right App for That!

10 Reasons Not to Buy an iPad for College-Bound Students

Summer Break’s end is right around the corner, which means hitting the shops to get everything on your back to school, school supplies list. This also means college-bound students will be hoping for iPads from their parents. But media editor Jeff Somogyi from dealnew points out ten reasons parents should not even consider buying their children iPads – especially for use instead of regular laptops.

The ten reasons include:/> 1. It’s Expensive

2. It’s Not the Best Solution for Note-Taking or Editing Documents

3. It’s Too Distracting

4. It’s Ultra-Portable and Ultra-Droppable

5. What Makes it Desirable to your Kid is What Makes it Desirable to Criminals

6. It’s Meant for the Enjoyment of One Person, Which Means Social Seclusion (you saying that I’m not social?!?)

7. Digital Text Books are a Marvel, but There’s No Secondary Market

8. It’s a Status Symbol, Plain and Simple

9. It’ll Already be Old Technology by the Time You Buy It

10. They’ll Also Want a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.worthavegroup.com/laptop-insurance');" target="_blank" title="Laptop" href="http://www.worthavegroup.com/laptop-insurance">Laptop, Too

I, of course, don’t agree with some of the aforementioned reasons. Some just seem like filler-reasons to complete a list of ten overall. However, I do think that iPads should not take the place of regular laptops. For the price of an onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad, $499 at the cheapest, you can get a better-than-good PC or pay just a bit more and go ahead and get a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.macbookinsurance.com');" target="_blank" title="Macbook" href="http://www.macbookinsurance.com">Macbook.

So what do you think? A list that’s going to make your parents think twice about buying you that iPad, college-bound students?

Track your expenses with Touch Expense

Touch Expense, by MobiApps, is an iPhone application designed for tracking your expenses.

Touch Expense is an innovative and easy way to put your daily expenses.
Insert and tracking your daily expenses has never been faster and enjoyable.

I’m not sure how I feel about the UI for entering in expenses. You must slide your fingers up (and down) the big circular sliders to enter the amounts – the left one is for dollars and the right one is for cents. Having a keypad pop up would be faster, in my opinion. The look of the UI, however, is really neat and makes me want to get used to the entry method. In fact, the look reminds me of my favorite weight tracking app, Weightbot.

Touch Expense is available on the iPhone for $1.99. Screenshots after the break.

Rumor: AT&T Employees Instructed of Vacation Blackout at end of September

Yet more possible evidence of an iPhone 5 release this coming September. Gizmodo received a tip from an AT&T employee, noting a vacation blackout during the last two weeks of September. We’re assuming they checked the headers on the email, confirming it was indeed coming from someone at AT&T. The content of the email follows:

I’m an att employee and my boss just announced that vacation requests for the end of september will be denied due to an “event blackout”. Historically the only time they’ve done this was for an iphone release. So we’re looking at the last two weeks of september.

90 second iTunes previews starting to roll out internationally

90 second iTunes previews starting to roll out internationally

The new, longer 90 second iTunes music previews seem to be finally rolling out internationally. They aren’t available on all songs yet, and in my testing of the Canadian iTunes Store, it seems hit in miss as to whether you’ll get them or not, but at least some songs are going the full 90 seconds.

After a November 2010 notification to record labels Apple originally switched to 90 second previews in the US back in December of last year. Why it took that email so long to reach beyond American borders is unknown, as is how long it will take to fully roll out now that it has begun.

In an effort to crowd source this, let us know if you’re seeing the 90 second previews, what country you’re in, and whether or not the 90 second previews are everywhere or just on a few songs.

Fun Fact: Apple Has a Bigger Budget Than the U.S. Government

We all know that Apple is a monumental company, but if there is one figure that puts that fact into perspective it is when we compare it to our own government in the United States. Following Apple’s previous earnings report, the company has a total of $76.2 billion in the proverbial bank. This week marks the U.S. Treasury’s attainment of $73.8 billion balance.

For comparison sake, Microsoft, Apple’s closest competitor in the technology industry, is just shy of $70 billion. In total, 29 worldwide companies are wealthier than the federal government.

With Apple’s unprecedented growth over the last few years, it is not impossible that the difference in revenue between the government and the world’s biggest technology company will broaden further. Especially with the national debt looming on us. (Another fact for you, but this one isn’t as fun: analysts have found that our national debt in the trillions is currently impossible to pay off even if the U.S. Government collected every dollar in circulation.)

Maybe Apple just knows how to find the right people to manage billions and a wide reach of power. It would not hurt if the government looked at Apple for a few pointers on how to run a multi-billion dollar establishment, but the government’s system may already be too cluttered to be fixed by a precisely-neat company that dominates practically every market that it enters.

Who says Apple won’t run the world one day? Plus, that day seems close. Especially if our government goes under. (That was a joke of course, that is not likely to happen anytime soon. However I should probably bring up the national debt again that for all intent and purposes is impractical to work out.)

All kidding aside, the collation merely demonstrates Apple’s influence not just in groundbreaking technological strides and inventions but also its significant power in the world.

Add NFC payment capability to your iPhone 4

Do you want to add NFC to your iPhone 4? If you do, there is now actually a way to do it; but it is not for the feint hearted. NFC is an acronym for Near Field Communication. NFC enables you to pay for items by waving an enabled card or phone in front of an NFC enabled credit card terminal. There is no need to input a pin number or sign anything; it is all done with a wave of your phone. NFC has been widely rumored to feature in the iPhone 5 too.

NFC is currently available on certain Android handsets and now you can add it to your iPhone 4 too; if the jealousy is just too much to bear. According to Unplggd, all you need is one of the new credit cards from your bank that supports NFC; it should have a logo on the card that looks similar to a WiFi logo. Some banks call these cards Tap & Pay.

Once you have the card, all you need to do is remove your iPhone 4 back panel, position the credit card behind the battery then replace the back cover. You now have an iPhone 4 with NFC payment capabilities. The glass back apparently does not interfere with transactions and it can even work when you have a case on too.

Now I do not know why you would ever want to risk opening up your iPhone 4 to do this. NFC is hardly a killer feature yet. I don’t think I have ever seen it being used in the UK. Also the additional pressure this may put on the glass rear panel worries me greatly. This could stress the glass making it much more susceptible to cracking. Is anyone remotely interested in giving this a try?

The BookBook is now available for the iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is a marvel of 21st century technology. It incorporates security, entertainment and productivity in one single device. You can work with it, play with it and just have an amazing time without compromising on the benefits or services. The style of the iPhone 4 also aptly represents this idea. On the other hand, traditional leather bound books bring out a sense of nostalgia, and is just amazing to hold. The texture is set to remind us of decades or even centuries gone past; our amazing journey as a species.
The reason I have brought these two very different things up is that now there is an iPhone accessory that can combine the technological brilliance of the iPhone 4 with the warm feeling of a leather-bound book: the BookBook vintage case.
The BookBook case allows you to walk around with your iPhone 4 securely held within a high quality leather case. When you open it up, it looks as if you are reading a book, except you will be flipping through a touch-screen wonder. The BookBook also features slots for your id, debit cards, credit, cards and cash. By combing your wallet with your iPhone, this nice little accessory will reduce the length of your pre-travel checklist while giving you unprecedented convenience.
However, do not let its vintage look fool you; this accessory was designed with your iPhone 4 in mind. The case securely holds down the iPhone and protects the screen. It also provides edge-to edge protection, meaning, your phone is secure from any unwanted scratches or bumps. You can also easily attach your headphones while the iPhone is in the BookBook.
This wonderfully thoughtful accessory goes for only $59.99 but provides you with a wallet, iPhone 4 casing and awesome style.

iPhone 5 case leak-a-palooza

iPhone 5 case leak-a-palooza

According to M.I.C. Gadget, those iPhone 5 cases we caught a peak of earlier in the week are pretty much “everywhere” in China.

What we are hearing now is that the Chinese case makers are distributing their iPhone 5 cases.

Again, we won’t know for certain what iPhone 5 looks like until Steve Jobs or another Apple exec holds it up on stage this fall, but these manufacturers certainly seem confident enough in their knowledge of Apple’s iPhone 5 plans to risk their money on producing mass quantities of these Skittle-colored cases — with the mute switch on the “wrong” side…

Never miss an appointment with Calendar with Alarm for iPhone

Calendar with Alarm is an iPhone calendar app that, well, lets you set alarms.

Never miss an appointment again! CalAlarm is an elegantly designed user friendly calendar that adds an alarm to your appointments, so that you are no longer committed to the two short standard calendar beeps.

It drives me crazy that the iPhone’s native calendar only allows two alerts for an event. For entries that require more alerts, I normally add them to MobileMe in iCal on my Mac. Calendar with Alarm seems like a much better solution.

Calendar with Alarm is available on the iPhone for $1.99. Screenshots after the break.

AT&T Confirms Data Throttling

href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/att-to-start-throttling-users-in-october/2011/07/28/">Confirming what we heard yesterday, AT&T has issued a statement saying they will in fact start throttling data for heavy users starting October 1. So even if you thought yourself safe to use large amounts of data via your grandfathered plan, now you have to worry about losing your speed too.

Here’s the full statement:

An Update for Our Smartphone Customers With Unlimited Data Plans

Like other wireless companies, we’re taking steps to manage exploding demand for mobile data.  Many experts agree the country is facing a serious wireless spectrum crunch.  We’re responding on many levels, including investing billions in our wireless network this year and working to acquire additional network capacity.  We’re also taking additional, more immediate measures to help address network congestion.

One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans – those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest data users in a billing period.  In fact, these customers on average use 12 times more data than the average of all other smartphone data customers.  This step will not apply to our 15 million smartphone customers on a tiered data plan or the vast majority of smartphone customers who still have unlimited data plans.

Starting October 1, smartphone customers with unlimited data plans may experience reduced speeds once their usage in a billing cycle reaches the level that puts them among the top 5 percent of heaviest data users.  These customers can still use unlimited data and their speeds will be restored with the start of the next billing cycle.  Before you are affected, we will provide multiple notices, including a grace period.

This change will never impact the vast majority of our customers, and is designed to create a better service experience for all.

The amount of data usage of our top 5 percent of heaviest users varies from month to month, based on the usage of others and the ever-increasing demand for mobile broadband services.  To rank among the top 5 percent, you have to use an extraordinary amount of data in a single billing period.

There will be no changes for the vast majority of customers.  It’s not how much time you spend using your device, it’s what you do with it.  You can send or receive thousands of emails, surf thousands of Web pages and watch hours of streaming video every month and not be in the top 5 percent of data users.

Typically what puts someone in the top 5 percent is streaming very large amounts of video and music daily over the wireless network, not Wi-Fi.  Streaming video apps, remote web camera apps, sending large data files (like video) and some online gaming are examples of applications that can use data quickly.  Using Wi-Fi doesn’t create wireless network congestion or count toward your wireless data usage.  AT&T smartphone customers have unlimited access to our entire Wi-Fi network, with more than 26,000 hotspots, at no additional cost.  They can also use Wi-Fi at home and in the office.

The bottom line is our customers have options. They can choose to stay on their unlimited plans and use unlimited amounts of data, but may experience reduced speeds at some point if they are an extraordinarily heavy data user. If speed is more important, they may wish to switch to a tiered usage plan, where customers can pay for more data if they need it and will not see reduced speeds.

But even as we pursue this additional measure, it will not solve our spectrum shortage and network capacity issues.  Nothing short of completing the T-Mobile merger will provide additional spectrum capacity to address these near term challenges.

What’s interesting is that this doesn’t put a hard limit on how much data you use, just if you’re in the “top 5%”

More Leaked Cases Hint At Larger, Thinner iPhone 5

style="text-align: left;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/header.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22816" title="header" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/header.jpg" alt="" width="524" height="298" />href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/29/new-iphone-5-cases-indicate-a-thinner-but-half-inch-wider-and-longer-frame">9to5Mac has another set of leaked iPhone 5 cases on their hands, and these ones actually give some pretty solid information. These floppy silicone cases show a number of features that we’ve heard discussed about the iPhone 5, but weren’t sure about.

The big thing here is that if these are correct, the iPhone 5 will be bigger than the iPhone 4. The case is 5 inches tall by 2.8 inches wide, according to its specs, so the iPhone 5 must be very close to this in order to dit inside snugly. By comparison, the iPhone 4 is 4.5 inches tall and 2.31 inches wide, an increase of half-an-inch in both directions. The cases also seem to suggest a much thinner phone.

The other change? The volume rocker has switched sides, and is now opposite the lock switch, rather than next to it.

So readers, what’s your verdict?

AT&T Will Sell You An iPhone 3GS For $0.01, But It Won’t Be Pretty

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the cheapest I have ever seen an iPhone for sale. href="http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/packages/packages-details.jsp?q_package=sku4980475">One penny, from AT&T. That’s down from $99.99 for an iPhone 3GS. What’s the catch? It’s a refurb, and it’s not in great condition. Marked as “Refurb Cosmetic Blemish”, it would have a non-specified problem with the case — I imagine a scuff or scrape — that marks it down so significantly. You’ll also only get a 90 day warranty and limited AppleCare.

You think this is AT&T clearing out old stock? This might be a move of theirs to get rid of everything possible before the next iPhone debuts, and the iPhone 4 drops in price.

You’re still stuck on a contract, though.

Indie Developers vs. Large Corporations

Indie, or independent, game developers are often recognized on the iOS platform. Many of them are in the process of releasing games or have already released games onto the App Store, and these games, with all honesty, seem to best games made by larger corporations. I’m not sure if it’s their status of being independent or if it’s just their dependency on their games that makes them put so much time and effort into their projects, but it it certainly better than some other projects I’ve seen made by major corporations.

I’m not saying that large corporations don’t put time and effort into their endeavors on the App Store, but I’m just saying that it seems as if indie developers put a bit more. Take a look at Gameloft, for example; their games are extremely well done and well received. But have you seen them ever update their games with additional content? Can you name one title that doesn’t very closely resemble a console title made by another company? I”m not picking solely on them, but other companies as well.

I don’t want to be bias towards corporations, but I know what an indie developer goes through to get a game out there. They have to work with no pay for months on-end and then if their game is a flop, they’re pretty much broke. There’s a documentary coming out soon (onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.indiegamethemovie.com/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.indiegamethemovie.com/">Indie Game: The Movie), that focuses on the hardships of a few indie developers developing for the XBLA, so if you want a better account of everything I’ve said, check it out when it’s released.

So, the next time you go browsing the App Store for a game, check out one made by someone you’ve never hard of rather than by someone who is well-known. I know first-hand that there are an absolute endless amount of good, worthy titles deserving attention – many of them aren’t even more than a buck. And the quality of most will probably be more evident. #longliveindiegames

MySaver Will Protect Your Dock Connector

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Screen-Shot-2011-07-29-at-12.03.33-PM.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22811" title="Screen Shot 2011-07-29 at 12.03.33 PM" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Screen-Shot-2011-07-29-at-12.03.33-PM.jpg" alt="" width="553" height="403" />

If you’re like me, you probably have a handful of Apple cables, all of which have split at exactly the same point: the weak spot right near the device plug. My MacBook Pro cable and a bunch of iPhone and iPad cables have all split at exactly the same point — and usually at the world’s most awkward time.

A new Kickstarter project aims to stop that from happeningy. The href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1499810396/mysaver-protection-for-your-ipad-iphone-and-ipod-c">MySaver is a metal and silicone case which locks around that incredibly fragile part of the cord, giving you a way to grip without putting undue stress on the join.

It comes in two flavors: a complete replacement cable called the MySaver: Pro, which will set you back a $10 donation if you’re one of the first 100, or $19 after that, and the MySaver:DIY which snaps over your existing cable, and costs just $8.

I’ve split enough of my iPhone cables through just general use that this sounds like a pretty good idea to me, and probably worth dropping $10 on.

Review: Power Support’s Black Air Jacket Set

Ultra thin, ultra light, ultra hyped and rightly so. The onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/">Air Jacket Set case from Power Support USA is a hard-case for the iPod Touch 4th generation measuring under 1mm in thickness and weighing almost nothing – that’s how they manage to sell this case, and it’s certainly a valid selling point.

Through a slick finish, thin looks and more, Power Support’s onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/');" target="_blank" href="http://www.powersupportusa.com/catalog/product/view/id/555/s/air-jacket-set/category/106/">Air Jacket Set never ceases to amaze and impress. It’s yet another case available for the iPod Touch 4th generation.

In the nice packaging, another film is also included for use with your iPod. The adhesive side easily sticks to your iPod without trouble, and is meant to protect against grit, dirt, etc. I wouldn’t completely rely on the case for saving your iPod Touch from every single accident, considering its extra thin size, which is one of the major pluses to the case (size). But knowing that you can’t simply let the case take the fall helps you learn not to drop your iPod as often as you normally would.

If you’re not looking for something that will instantly transform your iPod into something bulky and not ideal for carrying around, then the Air Jacket is perfect for you. It’s available in two colors, clear and black, and sells for $34.95, a bit on the more expensive side when it comes to cases. Regardless, if you’ve got the money just burning a hole in your pocket, it’s worth the purchase.

Tweetcaster Pro updates with iPad support

Tweetcaster Pro has been updated as a universal application for iPhone and iPad.

I really like Tweetcaster’s UI. It has a very nice design and makes good use of popups without overusing them. I’ll likely be using Tweetcaster as my primary Twitter app on the iPad.

Tweetcaster Pro is available for $4.99. Screenshots after the break.

Apple now owns 66% of mobile profits

Apple now owns 66% of mobile profits

Horace Dediu of Asymco has taken a look at the financial results of Apple, Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, HTC, and RIM and put together a comparison of who is making profit and how much. Apple, perhaps not surprisingly, has gone from almost 0 in 2007 to 66% in the latest quarter, 2011.

Three companies which captured 11% of the profits before the modern smartphone era started (four years ago!) now capture 84% of the profits. Only one global brand phone vendor selling non-smart voice-oriented feature phones is still profitable however, as we shall see later, the only reason profits still exist for any vendor is due to the strength of their smartphone portfolio.

The pie chart above tells the story, and for more details and graphics, hit the link below.

Calvetica Releases Old Calendar App For Free As “Notvetica”

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.wlhqjdhh.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22798" title="mzl.wlhqjdhh.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.wlhqjdhh.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="480" />

The immensely popular href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/calvetica-calendar/id385862462?mt=8">Calvetica iOS app recently had a ground up redesign, completely retooling the look and feel of the app for version 4.0. Let’s just say that the response was mixed, especially among iPhone users, who found the new interface a useless clutter. Since the update, the ratings for the app have dropped a full star, and people are not happy.

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.qckoffsm.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22799" title="mzl.qckoffsm.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.qckoffsm.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

So they released the older version for free. Meet href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/notvetica/id451926697?mt=8">Notvetica — it’s version 3.7 of Calvetica, it’s a free download, and there won’t be any support or updates for it. But if you absolutely loathe version 4 of Calvetica, here’s a great way to go back. And it’s currently rated as five stars in the app star.

In Two Weeks The iPad Outsells What The Xoom Does In A Year

As href="http://www.splatf.com/2011/07/xoom-shipments/">Dan Frommer points out, Motorola has released information saying that they expect to sell 1.3-1.5 million Xooms this year, and have shipped 440,000 Xooms this quarter.

9.2 million iPads were sold last quarter, that’s 1.5 million units every two weeks — and for months you couldn’t get hold of one for love or money.

That’s right, every two weeks the iPad 2 sells what Motorola plans to ship in an entire year with the Xoom.

Now, do you think Samsung is doing much better than that with the Galaxy Tab? Or how about the Asus Transformer? Has anyone ever seen an Android tablet in the wild? Because I sure haven’t.

No 64GB iPhone 5?

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/9to5maciphone5.png">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22805" title="9to5maciphone5" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/9to5maciphone5.png" alt="" width="478" height="117" />href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/28/iphone-5-shows-up-in-korean-carrier-kts-system-16-gb-and-32-gb-capacities/">9to5 Mac’s sources have pointed them towards what appears to be an entry in Korean carrier KT’s system for the iPhone 5. What’s interesting here is that the entries appear to be for 16GB and 32GB only, there doesn’t seem to be one for a 64GB iPhone 5.

Users with large audio or video libraries have been calling for years for larger  capacities in their iOS devices, because not everyone want to drag around an iPod Classis — currently the only really high capacity device in Apple’s lineup. The build-up to the iPhone 4 launch had a lot of people hoping for a 64GB model, which is happening again with the iPhone 5. These SKUs seem to suggest that there won’t be one this time, either.

Now, I wouldn’t lose all hope. These could very easily be just placeholder SKUs, and we won’t know for sure until this thing is officially announced. Don’t count the 64GB iPhone out of the race quite yet.

iPhone 5 appears in Korean carriers inventory system but only in 16GB and 32GB flavors?

Here we go again, another day another iPhone 5 rumor. This time, 9to5 Mac has received an alleged screen capture from KT’s (Korea Telecom) internal stock inventory system. The screen shot clearly shows SKU’s (stock-keeping units) for AIP5 which we assume stands for Apple iPhone 5 followed by a number.

The number appears to represent the GB capacity of the iPhone 5 however we are widely expecting that a 64GB version would be released this time; but there is no mention of it. What is even more confusing is the third model in the screen capture; it appears that this is an iPhone 5 without any storage capacity? 9to5 Mac believes that this is a carrier unlocked model.

Before we lose all hope of an iPhone 5 64GB model, these SKU’s are just place holders and it may be a case that Apple is keeping the specifications under wraps until it is officially announced. I know a lot of people who are pinning their hopes on an iPhone 5 with 64GB of storage. Personally I have a 16GB version and it still has a few GB remaining.

Plants Vs Zombies Finally Gets Retina Display Support

href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.gwcfxpzb.320x480-75.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22795" title="mzl.gwcfxpzb.320x480-75" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mzl.gwcfxpzb.320x480-75.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="320" />

The supremely addictive href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/plants-vs.-zombies/id350642635?mt=8">Plants vs Zombies iPhone app has finally done what they should have done a year ago — pushed out Retina Display support. New with update 1.7 comes higher resolution assets that won’t look like a mess of pixels on your iPhone 4′s screen. Here’s the official update announcement, courtesy of Crazy Dave:

Greetings Zombie Apocalypse Homestead Defenders.

Breaking news has just reached us from Crazy Dave’s Workshop!

It seems that we have now accumulated enough brains and zombie body parts to bring you Retina support for Plants vs Zombies! Crazy Dave had been inundated with requests for support for this device and he’s been working like CRAAAZZYYY to bring it to you.

We also noticed that some speed optimizations were in order and we are always squashing a few bugs along the way. We hope you enjoy the crisp new graphics and improved performance!

Nintendo Already Dropping 3DS Price by $80, We Explain Why

After launching in the United States on March 25 of this year to a limited selection of games and a lukewarm response, Nintendo is dropping the price of its 3DS, the company’s newest handheld gaming device, by $80. That brings its original price of $250 to a very reasonable $170.

The 3DS is Nintendo’s first real successor to the hit DS device, with brand new, improved hardware packing better performance and a display capable of displaying 3D images. Its auto-stereoscopic display means that games can have a real sense of depth akin to the 3D technology that most theaters have adopted, minus the glasses. Though it has not been as game-changing (excuse my pun) in the industry as the original DS, which introduced touchscreen gaming to the mobile market, Nintendo can boast how this is the first consumer implementation of a glasses-free 3D effect.

Nintendo is making quite a bold move so early on in the 3DS’s lifespan. It is undoubtedly a result of the significant user base that has purchased Nintendo’s previous mobile devices but has yet to make the upgrade. Disappointing worldwide sales of 3.61 million in six months really, really pale in comparison to what Nintendo’s predecessor device, the Nintendo DS, has accomplished. In six and a half years along with multiple iterations based on the same hardware, the DS has sold 146 million.

It is no secret that Apple is dominating the handheld gaming market, and it seems like iOS is not going anywhere. The iPod touch, a multi-functional device which starts at $300 for a current model, has sold over 60 million units in three and a half years. Hundreds of millions more have an iOS device of some form that feature an eclectic library of games downloadable from the App Store for prices that typically do not surpass $6.99. With the capability of smartphones being able to provide a superior experience to many handheld gaming devices, the need for separate hardware cannot be justified to the same onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.onlinenursingdegree.net');" target="_blank" title="degree" href="http://www.onlinenursingdegree.net">degree as could in past years when Nintendo has seen success.

Of course, the best reasons to get a 3DS are to own one of the first devices featuring a display with a glasses-free 3D effect and because we won’t see a Mario or Zelda game of any kind on the iPhone anytime soon.

The updated price will go into effect on August 12. Is the economical price enough to sway you towards a 3DS purchase? Could it complement the mobile gaming your iOS devices provide or do you find that the 3DS features a superior/inferior experience (especially price-wise)?

Do you want to learn the piano? There’s now an accessory and app for that

If you ever have an urge to learn how to play the piano, Ion may have just made it a whole lot easier with the Piano Apprentice accessory and companion app. Ion in case you forgot, is the company that brought the awesome iCade cabinet to market. It has now released another addition to its growing portfolio of iOS accessories.

Simply connect your iPad, iPod or iPhone, download the free Piano Apprentice app, and start playing piano instantly! Piano Apprentice is a lightweight, highly portable 25-note keyboard with built-in stereo speakers that deliver authentic piano sound and keys that respond to your touch. It’s easy to follow along as acclaimed piano instructor Scott Houston, aka the Piano Guy, appears on the screen demonstrating how to play while the actual keys on Piano Apprentice light up, showing you where to place your hands. The Piano Apprentice app will even teach you how to read real music notation!

Features:

  • 25-note lighted keyboard with touch-sensitive keys

  • Follow the lighted keys and learn how to play piano quickly

  • Free piano teaching app available via iTunes

  • Lightweight, portable design

  • Powered by batteries (included) or optional AC adapter

  • Everything you need to learn and practice piano

  • Core MIDI Compliant

The cost of the Piano Apprentice is thought to be around the $100 mark. It is compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch. For the best learning experience, the iPad seems to be the best fit. I can see myself getting something like this as I always wanted to learn the piano. With an app and accessory like this, you can learn in your own time; which makes it much easier to fit it into a busy schedule.

Skyfire VideoQ for iPhone and iPad now available

Skyfire Labs have released their new iPhone and iPad app, Skyfire VideoQ, as a method of watching flash videos.

Skyfire VideoQ™ is a new kind of App that lets you watch Flash Videos while browsing with Safari or any iPad/iPhone browser! Simply click the ‘Mail Link to this Page’ on any browser to email the video URL to your ‘Queue’ and open the App.

One of the biggest complaints about iOS is the incompatibility with Flash. Skyfire VideoQ may not completely fill that gap, but since a huge amount of Flash content on the web is video, it’s a great solution for many people.

Skyfire VideoQ is available on the iPhone and iPad for $1.99. Screenshots and video after the break.

What might be a picture of what might be an iPhone 5…

What might be a picture of what might be an iPhone 5...

Yes folks, it’s silly season, the months before a new iPhone when case leaks and device peaks dominate the blogs as everyone and their blurry cam tries to get a shot of what’s next from Apple — like a picture on a train of something in something that could be something… or nothing.

Here’s what Seth Weintraub of 9to5Mac had to say:

“Almost EVO-like” in screen size, this iPhone also appears thinner than the current iPhone 4 but also wider. The edges are rounded metal like the edges of a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 but could still function as an antenna. The back is a curved/tapered glass or plastic. He couldn’t tell but if he had to guess he’d say glass. He said it looked too amazing to be built by anyone besides Apple (fanboy!).

Sure, it’s like Christmas carols in August, too much and too soon, but it’s only going to keep coming. So with all that preamble, check out the photo above let us know what you see, a new iPhone 5 with a larger screen and bigger, more rounded edges, a regular old iPhone in a case, an Android device, Elvis, Sasquatch, you know, whatever.

Redsn0w taken on the iOS 5 beta version

Apple has made it on the personal vendetta list of various hacking groups. However, few have been as successful and perhaps benevolent as redsn0w, which aims not only to crack through the code, but also to give iOS users the level control over their devices that Apple is not yet willing to concede. The latest target of this organization is the iOS 5 beta releases.

The iOS 5 is meant to be a revolutionary upgrade featuring new and improved features, a better user interface and a wide array of security mechanisms. However, Apple would be disappointed to imagine that its new OS would be free from the scrutiny of hackers including Redsn0w. Now the battle has taken one-step further as it released yet another update to further enhance the tethered jailbreak. A previous update by the group (0.9.8b3) failed to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 4 by directing it to a previous IPSW. In response, the iPhone Dev Team released 0.9.8b4 to add the particular supporting feature. This also supports the jail breaking of all previous iOS 5 beta versions.

Furthermore, keep in mind that except for the iPad 2 the beta redsn0w version supports all iDevices, which can work with the iOS 5 beta updates. It also works with both OS X and Windows operating systems. If you are developer, you know you are going to have fun with these latest updates. However, if you were an average consumer, it would be better to wait for a more stable updates.

AT&T To Start Throttling Users In October?

href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/28/att-to-implement-data-throttling-in-early-october-just-in-time-for-iphone-5/">According to 9to5 Mac (who have been on a spree on getting exclusives of late), AT&T is set to clamp down on you unlimited data plan users. If you’re on AT&T and have unlimited data, AT&T might start throttling your speed if they think you’re using too much bandwidth — a step that both Verizon and Virgin have already instituted.

This coincides with AT&T rolling out some LTE devices later this year, and the assumed launch of the next iPhone.

From the sounds of things, once you hit a predetermined data limit for the month, your speed will slow down significantly — but not stop.

Sorry jailbreakers, no more torrenting over your iPhone!

    The update includes:

I’ve played some of the first few levels of Siege Hero and I’ll definitely be playing some more. It reminds me a little of Angry Birds, but instead of catapulting birds in the 3rd person, I’m throwing weapons in the first person. It’s fun!

Siege Hero is available for $0.99 on the iPhone and $3.99 on the iPad. Screenshots after the break.

This iPhone Product/Video Is 100% Mind-Blowing, Revolutionary, Not an Editing Trick

The video below can speak for itself, and quite well I must say. Honestly, it only needs a short introduction since it is something you will have to see yourself: the video is of a real product for the iPhone that can be purchased by you once we reveal exactly what this is. Keep in mind that no camera editing is used to create the effect and “what you see is what you get.” (We did not record the video ourselves, it was supplied by the creator.) Go hit “play” and prepare to be amazed, as this is where the future is heading one day.

    src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/26997281?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0">

Uh, did you see that? Virtual items displayed on the touchscreen were brought into reality. No, this is not a Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-esque special effect, though it sure does accomplish bringing the infamous “candy bar sample over TV scene” into the world outside of Oompa-Loompas. It has to be reiterated for the rightfully skeptical that what you just saw is indeed a real product that will accomplish this.

Commenters need not spoil the secret. (For the three people in the world who already know what this is, please do reveal it just yet.)

Of course, watching a video of something that was almost impossible in the past leads to the question: what is it? We will answer that within the next week. Suspense and hype are always fun, right? We seem to think so. Once we do decide to be the first blog to reveal the inconceivable setup to the technology world, look for a full overview and a link to order the “accessory” if so inclined.

Something is telling me to put a “;)” at the end of this. Maybe “;p” is more fitting. Either way, try all you want to take this delicious Wonka chocolate bar (that was unfortunately discontinued, though you should still get the reference):

Potential iPhone 5 Spotted In The Wild

style="text-align: left;">href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone51.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-22788" title="iphone51" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/iphone51.jpg" alt="" width="526" height="703" />9to5 Mac has posted this image that they think might, just might, be the iPhone 5. A tipster spotted someone using it in San Francisco, a person they pegged to be an Apple worker, and they sent it in to 9to5 after seeing the shots of the iPhone cases yesterday.

style="text-align: left;">The tipster describes it as a perfect match for the iPhone cases that have been leaked, with an “almost EVO-like” screen, and a thinner and wider body. He said the back is curved, but it looks a bit more like glass than plastic.

style="text-align: left;">Now, let the zaprudering of the shot commence! Some people are already commenting that it looks like a 3GS in a case, and with an image of this quality it’s really hard to tell. What do you folk think?

OtterBox Showing Summer Spirit for iPhone 4 Users

OtterBox is no doubt the best of the bests when it comes to making durable, rugged cases for all of your electronics, and they’re certainly mine and many others’ favorites. All of their cases, no matter what series, are at the top of their brackets, and that’s rightly so. iPhone 4 users are in for a treat as OtterBox have decided to show some of their love for Summer by giving their customers more variety!

OtterBox are now offering their iPhone 4 Commuter Series Case in two new colors, matching the theme of summer as they’re vibrant, bright and everyone’s favorites. The case now comes in black and yellow and black and blue alternatives, which both give your iPhone a flashy look. Usually their products aren’t portrayed incorrectly on their website with pictures, so with all honesty these new options look genuinely nice.

Previously, I thought that any OtterBox cases weren’t for people that preferred visually attractive cases, but rather for people who wanted to solely protect their devices. However, OB have gone ahead and proved me wrong by offering these colors and many other colors that they now offer.

The case is available for $34.95 onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.otterbox.com/iPhone-4-Commuter-Series-Case/APL4-I4XXX,default,pd.html?dwvar_APL4-I4XXX_color=20&start=3&cgid=apple-iphone-4-cases');" target="_blank" href="http://www.otterbox.com/iPhone-4-Commuter-Series-Case/APL4-I4XXX,default,pd.html?dwvar_APL4-I4XXX_color=20&start=3&cgid=apple-iphone-4-cases">here, and if it’s anything as good as the iPod Touch 4th generation’s according case, then I stand behind my previous decision and fully recommend the case to each and everyone of you out there. If you’re looking for a less expensive alternative, OtterBox has other cases available for almost any mobile device and eReader you could probably think of. Just go to onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.otterbox.com');" target="_blank" href="http://www.otterbox.com">their homepage and find your device in their long list.

Florida School Replaces Textbooks With iPads

The days of paper grocery bag book covers may be coming to an end! Students from Lake Minneola High School are receiving iPads instead of textbooks to use in the classroom and at home this school year.

The school is the first public school in Central Florida to purchase iPads for all their students to reduce cost of textbooks. According to the Orlando Sentinel, other private schools are adopting the same program. Lake Wales High School, a Florida charter school, used donations from to buy iPads for their students, and the Jewish Academy of Orlando is doing the same.

Public schools in Florida are moving to all digital materials by 2015, and the state plans to follow Lake Mineola’s progress with their iPads to see how the transition works out.

Mary Jane Tappen, deputy chancellor for curriculum, instruction and student services at the Florida Department of onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.onlinenursingdegree.net');" target="_blank" title="Education" href="http://www.onlinenursingdegree.net">Education said other Florida schools can learn from Lake Minneola so they can be better prepared to make the digital leap in the future.

The Lake Minneola School received a nice discount spending around $700,000 on 1,750 devices. This could help reduce costs by allowing students to use one device for all their courses instead of several textbooks. iPads in the classroom will also allow schools to cutback on buying computers and other expensive technology in the future. However, how are schools going to be able to keep up with the latest tech trends?

It’s already rumored that Apple might release the onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad 3 this year, and with the stiff competition coming from the Android Market, it’s probably safe to assume that the tablet wars are only going to get crazier. Plus who covers the cost for damaged or stolen devices? I still owe my high school money for books I lost!

Apple awarded multiple design patents – MacBook Air, Apple remote, iPhone 3G, & more

The US Patent and Trademark office just published fourteen new patents recently awarded to Apple. Among them are design patents for the MacBook Air, iPhone 3G, Apple remote, their battery charger design, and many more.

Considering Apple recently sued Samsung for copying the iPhone and iOS look and feel, these patents could end up with many other manufacturers in court. Lots of notebooks have recently mimicked the design of the MacBook Air or other variations of the MacBook line. None of the patents seem too design specific. If Apple has the ability to sue based on the overall appearance and design, I definitely think we’ll see more lawsuits springing up sooner rather than later.

‘Gogo Navigator USA & CAN’ App Review for All Devices

There are tons of options for users wanting to extend the reach of their iOS device; utilizing their ability to also be a GPS device alongside their primary job of being phones and entertainment systems is just one of the many ways. Among the top contenders on the App Store is onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gogo-navigator-usa-can/id408828343?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gogo-navigator-usa-can/id408828343?mt=8">Gogo Navigator for USA & CAN, a reasonably priced, full-featured GPS application that is well-worth the purchase, albeit with just a few, tiny caveats.

The user-interface here (UI) is, simply put, amazing! To say the least, the menus are crisp, efficiently laid out and most easily navigable. From the menu, you’ll be able to access your route information, where you can edit the route, settings, POI, favorites and more. href="http://www.iphonealley.com/application_reviews/gogo-navigator-usa-can-app-review-for-all-devices/attachment/gogo2" rel="attachment wp-att-20966">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/gogo2-200x300.png" alt="" title="gogo2" width="200" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-20966" />You’ll also be able to locate the map, which will show you where you currently are, street names, highlighted route and displays options (3D/2D, zoom in/zoom out, and more). I do wish that the ability to search through the POI be added soon, because that’s one of the prominent features I tend to use with my current GPS.

“albeit with just a few, tiny caveats” -

The small problems with Gogo Navigator are definitely not game-changing, though certainly worth a mention: I encountered several bugs throughout my testing phase of the application, which caused the whole app to completely bug out and become completely unusable. It usually required either a hard-reset (home button + sleep button for ten seconds) or refreshing the application by killing the un-responsive process thanks to the multitasking bar. Again, it’s not something that I would consider as a reason not to purchase Gogo Navigator, though it could be a pretty annoying problem, especially if it happens when you’re relying on the application and are in a huge hurry to get to your destination. (onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/imageshack.us/photo/my-images/64/bugyl.png/');" target="_blank" href="http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/64/bugyl.png/">Screenshot of bug)

The application also does crash every once in awhile, which can be extremely frustrating especially since you could be in the middle of doing something. Again, not something to change my view on the app, but surely something that needs to be addressed in future updates.

It would’ve helped if Gogo Navigator’s various icons, screens and sprites were more polished. In its current state, it seemingly doesn’t utilize the iPhone and iPod Touch’s retina display and some of the menu buttons are missing that crisp, polished, shiny sort of look that contributes an application’s professionalism and overall quality. These very few instances definitely don’t affect usage of the application much, though.

Considering the application takes up nearly 2 GB of space, it’s great that you don’t need a solid Wi-Fi or 3G connection for planning new routes and accessing all of the GGN’s features. This means the application works just as well on the iPod Touch or Wi-Fi onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ipadngravy.com');" target="_blank" title="iPad" href="http://www.ipadngravy.com">iPad as it does on the iPhone or 3G iPad, when on the road. However, you can also get an additional feature unique to Gogo Navigator with an in-app purchase of $8.99 that does require a data connection (meaning it will not work on iPod Touches or iPads, but instead on iPhones). Live Traffic is very much like the software built into navigational devices that keeps you aware of possible traffic en-route, though much more advanced. It’s a wonderful, extremely useful feature that is available for only a tiny upgrade. After you select your destination, you’ll be able to access a list of possible traffic delays along with the estimated time the delays will last and what exactly the delay is.

onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gogo-navigator-usa-can/id408828343?mt=8');" target="_blank" href="http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gogo-navigator-usa-can/id408828343?mt=8">Gogo Navigator for USA & CAN is certainly a possible solution for your navigation needs. It literally acts as a complete, built-in GPS with everything you’d expect to see. With a friendly UI, additional Live Traffic feature, a sophisticated OS and much, much more, all for a reasonable price of $29.99 (with optional $8.99 purchase), you don’t want to pass down the opportunity to own one of the most useful applications currently on the App Store – it proves that the iOS device is the ultimate utility for all of your daily needs, and I’m looking forward to using it and its Live Traffic feature on my next road trip!

ITC Rules Against Apple In Samsung, S3 Suits

    href="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/successful_troll2.jpg">class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2375" title="successful_troll2" src="http://cdn.everythingicafe.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/successful_troll2.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="441" />

The eternal patent battles continue, and two recent blows have been dealt against Apple. href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/07/27/itc_agrees_to_investigate_samsungs_patent_case_against_apple.html">As reported by AppleInsider, the ITC has decided to investigate href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/tag/samsung/">Samsung’s claims that Apple violated many of Samsung’s patents with the iPhone, iPad and iPod. While not a huge victory, it does mean that the case wasn’t quickly thrown out and has some degree of merit.

Meanwhile, the ITC has ruled that Mac OS X href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-26/apple-s-mac-operating-system-violates-s3-patents-judge-says.html">violates a number of patents held by S3 Graphics Co — but iOS does not.

Mac computers have an operating system that infringes two S3 patents related to graphics chips, U.S. International Trade Commission Judge James Gildea said.

This month saw S3 bought out by href="http://www.everythingicafe.com/tag/htc/">HTC, a move which will doubtless further the legal woes between them and Apple.

New Thursday Releases and Freebies Worth Downloading

As the weekend nears, mine and your reliance on iPhone titles to pull us through the two days are growing. So, I decided to compile a list of all of the new Thursday releases (as Thursday is always the day of the week with the largest releases seeking and deserving attention) and freebies for today, so you can pick and choose which ones peak your interest. Check them out below:

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/384735" rel="attachment wp-att-20944">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/384735.png" alt="" title="384735" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20944" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/app/roboto/id449384735?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/roboto/id449384735?mt=8">Roboto [$2.99]/> With 30 action-packed, ginormous levels, Roboto is the newest action platformer to hit iOS. You’ll play as a seemingly cutesy hoverboard robot, determined to get the girl of his dreams, who has, unfortunately for him, traveled to another galaxy. There has already been praise for the game’s controls, cleverly designed levels and epic boss battles, but what deserves the most attention is the game’s wonderful graphical scheme. I’m trying to get my hands on this game now, so look out for a review of it soon on iPhoneAlley. I’m hoping to see that my expectations are fully satisfied. By the way, $2.99 is an introductory price, so grab it now before it goes up.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/dice-soccer" rel="attachment wp-att-20947">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/dice-soccer.png" alt="" title="dice soccer" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20947" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/dice-soccer/id435873519?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dice-soccer/id435873519?mt=8">Dice Soccer [FREE]/> Whether you’re a soccer junkie or not, this new game from LambdaMu Games is worth a download thanks to its casual theme and reliance on dice to keep the game flowing. You have to know nada about soccer, otherwise called futbol, to be a pro at Dice Soccer, other than how to tap your screen. You’ll play against a variety of different teams in different leagues, advancing from wins, and you can further purchase players, edit your lineup and more. Considering it’s freemium, IAP is expected but purchasing the various items are not needed to advance in the game. For a fun free game that will surely keep you occupied for some time, check out Dice Soccer – it’s made for the average casual gamer.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/mad-wheels" rel="attachment wp-att-20948">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/mad-wheels.png" alt="" title="mad wheels" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20948" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/mad-wheels/id439889449?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mad-wheels/id439889449?mt=8">Mad Wheels [$0.99]/> This is one of the best looking racing games that I’ve ever seen. You’ll race against opponents in a semi-3D, isometric world with hopes of, of course, coming in first place. Rather than focusing on the realism of the racing genre, Mad Wheels takes it to the destructive level; instead of regular cars, you’ll race with vehicles such as tanks blasting away at your opponents. There are three game modes currently included, with one being a multiplayer mode, though keep in mind that it’s only local multiplayer. For a buck, it looks like it’s worth it. Check it out. It’s from our friends Chillingo, so it shouldn’t disappoint.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/hungribles" rel="attachment wp-att-20949">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/hungribles.png" alt="" title="hungribles" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20949" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/hungribles/id444442921?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hungribles/id444442921?mt=8">Hungribles [$1.99]/> iOS never fails to impress if you’re looking for physics puzzlers, specifically cutesy ones. The newest to enter the platform’s collection is Hungribles from Futuremark Games Studio. In this, you have to feed the hungribles their favorite food (sound familiar? Om Nom Nom…) with the power of physics. The animations and artwork combined look absolutely stunning, and the game comes loaded with a ton of levels with more promised in future updates. You may be able to find another similar title on the App Store for less, with the assurance of quality, but Hungribles has got to take the cake home for being the cutest. I think it’s worth the plunge. Let us know how you like it in the comments.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/silent-op" rel="attachment wp-att-20950">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/silent-op.png" alt="" title="silent op" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20950" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/silent-ops/id436960460?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/silent-ops/id436960460?mt=8">Silent Ops [$6.99]/> I’m personally not too big a fan of games like this from Gameloft, but I know many of you are, so here we go: Silent Ops is yet another 3D, third-person shooter with a killer storyline and somewhat nicely rendered artwork. You’ll play as a total of 3 characters throughout a 7-level story mode, that looks, anyways, like something taken out of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. I have to admit, though, this new title from Gameloft looks absolutely stunning, visually. I would buy it based solely based on that aspect, but I know it would just sit in the pile of other Gameloft games I’m never motivated to open. But, if you like it, please let us know. We have a minor Gameloft buff on our team (am I embarrassing you Michael?), so he may be interested in knowing how this game plays.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/cordy" rel="attachment wp-att-20951">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/cordy.png" alt="" title="cordy" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20951" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/cordy/id447870643?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cordy/id447870643?mt=8">Cordy [FREE/IAP]/> I love how many platformers are now being introduced into the App Store, as the lack of them a few years ago was just torturous. In this one, you’ll take control of Cordy in a total of 27 timed levels, with an ultimate goal of bringing back electricity to its home planet. There are various number of puzzles throughout the many levels, and the gorgeous graphics are, simply put, impressive! You’ll get the first four levels for free, with the option to upgrade later to the full version for $1.99. I wouldn’t expect any more levels in updates, though, because the current levels follow a story. But don’t worry, the existing levels have enough to keep you occupied until the next big platformer is releases! And there’s Roboto as well.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/power-cubes" rel="attachment wp-att-20955">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/power-cubes.png" alt="" title="power cubes" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20955" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/au/app/power-cubes/id450432561?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/power-cubes/id450432561?mt=8">Power Cubes [$1.99]/> This wasn’t quite released on Thursday, but I felt it deserved a mention, and it’s relatively new. Power Cubes puts you in control of a little blue “guy” with a goal of collecting all of the green cubes in a level, while also methodically and strategically avoiding the various obstacles (lasers, rockets, anything moving). There’s no storyline, which was a bit disappointing because I could see a really unique one being applied to this, but the gameplay is enough fun to make up for the lack. There are a total of 50 levels, with the difficulty constantly escalating from one to the other, and the graphical theme is enough to make you drool (maybe not you, but I’m a total sucker for the amount of polish each sprite boats; excuse the eDrool). For $1.99, I’d recommend this if my life depended on it (too much?), but really, it’s that good.

There are a few more applications that were released today, in fact probably a whole ton more, but I’ll save the rest of your reserve to read this article for the freebies below.

target="_blank" href="http://www.iphonealley.com/blog/new-thursday-releases-and-freebies-worth-downloading/attachment/robokill" rel="attachment wp-att-20956">src="http://www.iphonealley.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/robokill.png" alt="" title="robokill" width="65" height="65" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20956" />onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/app/robokill/id408858081?mt=8');" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/robokill/id408858081?mt=8">Robokill/> What’s up with robots this week? We have two applications above and now this one? Ah well. This was and still is seriously one of the best dual-stick shooters available for iOS currently. You control a robot in a maze of labyrinth-like levels as you fight against enemy droids and more. The amount of action packed into the game is terrific, so if you’re at all peaked by the game’s name, screenshots, gameplay or anything else, go ahead and download it. As I’ve said previously, there’s no penalty for downloading because it’s free, though there is a limit considering this is probably only free for a limited time.

Spidey Riley puts you in control of a spider who wants to get somewhere. With simple one-touch mechanics, you have to control the timing of his jumps to get from one place to another. It has some pretty nice visuals, and it’s from the makers of the Fastball series.

You play as To-Fo, the elastic slab of tofu. By dragging and stretching him, you’ll sling him across the many levels in order to reach the end. I’m going to stop descriptive ways to recommend these games, because my fingers are pretty much dead right now, so just get this. Ok?

If you’ve made it this far, congratulations. Now please just let us know how you like the games listed above. I just wrote this whole article at one time without break, so I’m going to go ice my fingers. I’ll regretfully do this again next week, but I’m not promising anything.
