The Potential of iPhone 4S’s “Bluetooth Smart” to Change the Connectivity Landscape

One of the improvements in the iPhone 4S that has not received much more than a whisper pre-launch may be one of the most understated additions, prompting a new generation of “smart” connectivity. Devices that previously may have been unrealistic to actively connect to a smartphone can now thrive with minimal effect on battery life.

The brand new Bluetooth 4.0 chip, which has been initially-exclusive to the iPhone 4S in the mobile space, uses significantly less power than its predecessors. In fact, it is so power-efficient that it could last off of a button cell watch battery for years. In contrast to the Bluetooth we have come to know, information is not constantly updated. Rather, a low pulsing method is used to keep the connection active without using as much data as before.

Phones featuring the chip will use “Bluetooth Smart” labeling. Devices that can be used with Bluetooth Smart phones will go by the moniker of “Bluetooth Smart Ready,” which should be clearly identifiable on its packaging.

Potential use for Bluetooth 4.0 is huge. In addition to no longer having to worry about whether a Bluetooth-connected headset will quickly drain battery life, an entirely distinct line of devices could work in-sync with iPhone 4S. Imagine having a watch that allows you to read all of your text messages, check the weather, take calls, and even utilize Siri. Further down the line, what if a television could continuously display such information, retrieving it directly from your smartphone?

Unique connectivity extends to lighting and medical applications. Pedometers, heartbeat monitors, and glucose meters as well as motion sensors and power switches are just the beginning. The doors are open for nearly any electronic device to take advantage of iPhone 4S’s constant connection and processing power.

With iCloud, AirPlay, and Bluetooth 4.0, there are few devices that have as much constantly-connected potential as iPhone 4S.
