Will The iPod Touch 3G Happen?

How would you like an iPhone that doesn’t make phone calls? Or more accurately, an iPod Touch that can browse the web anywhere and everywhere? Dutch Apple blog AppleSpot.nl is reporting that the iPod Touch may become the iPod Touch 3G, with an iPad style 3G connection. A 9to5Mac reader translated the report into English:

It will work just like the iPad; you get a 3G enabled simcard from your provider and put that in you iPod Touch. Apple’s choice of bringing 3G to the iPod Touch isn’t all that weird, if it’s true of course. Question remains how the providers will react to this, since the use of for example Skype will skyrocket.

This rumor doesn’t really have legs right now, but it’s an idea I find intriguing. If the current rumors of a cut price iPhone release are true, a low-cost iPhone would put a lot of pressure on the iPod Touch — why buy an iTouch when you can buy an iPhone for the same price? By putting a 3G connection into it, you make up much of the lost ground, and once you couple with Google Voice or something similar, you’ve got a decent iPhone replacement without a two-year contract.
